A Roman banquet At the end of last term the children at Christ Church C of E First School held 3 events to celebrate the end of their topics and invited parents to come along and enjoy the event. The photos show Sapphire, Emerald and Topaz class On Monday April 22nd, Oakfield and Selwood year 8 pupils competed in the LAURIE EDWARDS Memorial Trophy Match, at Frome Town Stadium. After confidently beating Selwood 4-1, Mr Fowler (boys PE) said, ‘the boys were excellent and played so well individually and as a team that I was unable to award ‘man of the match’! Goal scorers: Tom D, Kalem M, Stan F, Albie H. The Oakfield boys also reached the Mid-Somerset cup finals this year, and go on to the regional South SEST Futsal finals for the second year running, beating three year 9 teams at the County finals held at Millfield School on the 16th April. The team will now go on to represent Oakfield in Swindon at the Futsal Arena, a purpose built facility with state of the art equipment. Oakfield pupils enjoy regular Futsal matches. (a small sided version of indoor football which uses a smaller heavier ball) Futsal put the emphasis on teamwork, skill, close control and spatial awareness. Oakfield’s younger pupils are also excelling in boys football. Recently competing against the always strong Millfield Specialist Sports School, winning one match and achieving a draw in the other. Goal scorers: Rudi B and Lewis W. Oakfield would like to thank the Oakfield Fundraisers for supporting the culture of sport at the Academy, by buying a new KS2 kit. The Academy also wishes to thank boys PE teacher, Mr Fowler PE for his dedication.

UK student mission to Mars takes off Over one hundred future space engineers test out technologies for Mars On Friday 22nd March the MARSBalloon mission launched over 120 student experiments designed to test how everyday objects will survive on Mars from Oakfield Academy in Frome. This is the final stage of a unique project aimed to encourage young people to take up careers in the UK space industry. The experiments were carried 26km up into Earth’s atmosphere on two high altitude balloons, named Phobos and Deimos after the moons of Mars, where they experienced temperatures as low as -50°C, pressures 1% of that at sea level and increased levels of radiation; conditions which are very close to that of the surface of Mars. The 79 experiments on Phobos were successfully recovered in good condition four hours after launch in Fenny Compton. The tracking system on Deimos failed to report its landing location and so it and its experiments have yet been found and we are asking the Oxfordshire and Warwickshire public for help in locating it. Current estimates place it in the area around Long Itchington but this is far from certain. The project was devised and is run by young space engineers from the Bristol based Aerospace Division of SEA (a Cohort plc company) with funding from the UK Space Agency. The space engineers are also Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) ambassadors and were assisted in finding interested students by Graphic Science,

the STEM coordinators for Bristol, Bath & Somerset and Gloucestershire. During a series of classroom workshops students aged 7 to 24 from six schools and universities in Bath and Bristol were set the challenge to come up with experiments for testing anything that humans might want to take or do on Mars in the future. All of the experiments had to fit inside a Kinder Surprisetm toy capsule and will be mounted onto a special tray beneath the balloons to maximise their exposure to the hostile environment. The idea for the mission was inspired by the UK Space Agency sponsored technology demonstration missions, UKube-1 and TechDemoSat-1, and the need to promote careers in an industry that has grown by nearly 8% throughout the recession and is worth over £9.1bn to the UK economy.

Harold’s Stop Watch Competition for Life Education Why does Frome Rotary support Life Education ?

• Obesity, smoking, binge drinking and drug abuse create huge problems for individuals, the NHS, families, and the community as a whole where they cause crime and social unrest. • Life Education Wessex is a specialist charity provider of high quality Health and Drug Prevention Education to almost 60,000 children in Devon, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset, helping to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to lead healthier and happier lives. • They work in partnership with schools, parents and the wider community to help children between the ages of 3 and 13 develop the ability to make positive, informed choices about their health, and reduce the risk of drug misuse. • They teach them about diet, exercise and how drugs can affect the way the body works. In addition, they help them to develop the skills to manage their feelings and the risks they may encounter so that they can take responsibility for their own lives. • In schools they are affectionately known as ‘The LifeBus’ with ‘Harold the Giraffe.’ • Our aim is to ensure all children in the Frome Community Learning Partnership have an opportunity to experience this vital service despite the pressures on school budgets. • Supporting Life Education Wessex is one of the most important contributions that Frome Rotary can make to life in our own community.

What is Frome Rotary doing?

• We already provide assistance by towing the Life Education Wessex mobile classrooms between participating schools. • In June 2013 we are organising a scheme which could enable schools to raise funds through their parents to support the Life Education Wessex programme. • As Harold is already recognised and remembered by so many children, we propose that Harold puts his name to a Stop Watch Competition open to all First, Primary and Middle Schools in the Frome Community Learning Partnership.

How will it work?

• A Stop Watch provided by Harts the Jewellers will be fully wound, secured in a safe and allowed to run down. A record is made of the hour, minute and second on which the watch finally stops. • 2880 cards are printed, one for each half minute of a 24 hour day containing a line for each of the 30 seconds. The card also contains information about Life Education Wessex. • Cards are issued to the parents of all children in the First, Primary and Middle Schools, accompanied by a letter from the Head Teacher explaining the importance of Life Education and the objectives of the Stop Watch Competition. 6

• Parents are invited to sell the seconds at 20p each, every card providing a potential income of £6. • A prize of £500 will go to the purchaser of the second on which the watch stops, or if that second has not been sold, to the nearest following second. • The school selling the winning second will earn a prize of £500 and the parent selling the winning second will receive a prize of £50. • The school retains the proceeds of the sale of seconds by its parents, less a service charge from Frome Rotary covering the costs of the scheme. The service charge by Frome Rotary will include a sum designed to benefit the smaller schools by providing them with sufficient funds to cover a one day visit by the Life Education mobile classroom. • Frome Rotary helps with the administration of the scheme in schools and members are allocated individual schools for this purpose. • Active media coverage will be arranged by Frome Rotary in conjunction with Life Education Wessex. It is intended that parents will learn of the scheme through the media at the same time as receiving the letter and card from the head teacher. • Frome Medical Practice has agreed to sponsor the scheme as they regard Life Education as a very important element of preventative medicine.

What are the benefits?

• Frome Rotary organises the competition and provides all schools with an opportunity to raise their own funds to cover the cost of visits by Life Education Wessex. • Promoting the competition will automatically increases the awareness of both parents and the community as a whole to the benefits of Life Education for our children and young people. • The prizes should be attractive to people buying the seconds, parents and schools. • The scheme will have considerable attractions for both the media and potential sponsors. • There is a possibility it could become recognised as an annual event and, if successful, could well be operated by other Rotary Clubs and Life Education Providers in the UK.

A Community Effort?

The cost of providing Life Education is £650 per day of which 50% is provided by the charity and the rest comes from the school’s budget. The Stop Watch Competition is designed to cover the school’s contribution and is supported by Frome Medical Practice. The Friends of Frome Hospital have undertaken to fund the total amount provided by Life Education Wessex to the schools in 2013 and it is understood that further donations to the charity are being made by Frome Town Council and two Somerset County Councillors.

Life Education at St John’s Primary School, Frome As the Life Education mobile classroom arrived at St John’s School in Frome, the children were excited to meet Harold and also to learn some new and interesting life skills. Year 2 were asked to take a seat on the carpet of the mobile classroom and the Life Education teacher began interacting with them. They discussed the human body and the key organs, where they are and how they work and they were then able to take it in turns to light up these organs on Tam, a life size mannequin. The children had lots of great ideas on their bodies and learnt about how to stay healthy and fit. Harold then came out to meet the children and much excitement ensued. Harold explained that he was having a party and a few of his friends were feeling unwell and also having different social problems too. The children discussed with Harold how he could help them to overcome their illness and stay healthy and also how they can all work together as a team. All of the children involved in the life education session thoroughly enjoyed it and they learnt many life skills and had an enjoyable and rewarding time.

Best speaker As part of Hunting Raven Bookshop’s ABC (Authors and books for children day) Oakfield Academy Enrichment Centre was the venue for visiting author Gill Lewis. Gill spoke about her childhood growing up in Bath, becoming a vet before she became writer and how she cares madly about the natural world. Gill’s books, ‘Sky Hawk’ and ‘White Dolphin’ are very popular with Oakfield Academy pupils and they all enjoyed Gill’s presentation, which provoked many enthusiastic questions. Oakfield wishes to thank Karin at Hunting Raven Bookshops for organising this opportunity. L-r: Aya, Bella and Alisha with Author, Gill Lewis.

Sponsored Bounce The children of Vallis First School had a fantastic morning on Thursday 18th April when they took part in a ‘Sponsored Bounce’ organised by the VSA to raise funds for some new P.E. equipment. Rosie Brown, a Key Stage 1 teacher and member of the VSA said “ All the children had a lovely time bouncing on a bouncy castle, on animal shaped space hoppers, skipping and bouncing balls, they got lots of exercise whilst having fun.”

Oakfield Academy entered a competition on the Snapshot website to take a photograph of the pupils reading in a strange place, including a written description of their favourite book and reasons for liking it. We had some excellent entries, which can be viewed on the Snapshot webpage. Felix Piper from Oakfield was chosen the overall winner of the Frome schools. Well done Felix!

Annie Warde aged 13 who attends Selwood Academy won Best Speaker in a public speaking competition that was held at St.Gregory’s School in Bath. Annie prepared and delivered a 6 minute speech on child imprisonment and the murder of James Bulger. Annie was in a team of three people who competed against six other teams in the competition, unfortunately her team didn’t place but Annie was a real star winning Best Speaker! Well done Annie.

ARTS & CRAFTS DAD PHOTO FRAME

MUG WARMER

You will need:

A5 card (we used A4 and cut in half) Stickers and any other embellishments you have Glue 3 Photographs

Instructions:

Draw two D’s and an A shape onto the card, and cut out. Use a small pair of scissors to cut out the inside of the letters, too (younger children will need adult help or supervision). Decorate your letters. We simply used stickers but you can use gems, ribbons, sequins, pompoms or anything else from your craft box. Glue a photo to the back of each letter so that it fills the aperture. Trim any overhanging bits of photo away. Layer the letters so they overlap slightly, spelling out the word “Dad”, and glue together. You could laminate the photo frame to make it last, or enclose the whole thing within a larger Perspex frame.

PHOTO COASTER

You will need:

Felt Fabric paint Self adhesive hook and eye fasteners Optional, fabric glue and any embellishments you like.

Instructions:

Measure your felt around your Dad’s favourite mug. Cut out a rectangle about ½ inch shorter than the mug and long enough to fit around the mug with an inch overlap. Shape the ends of the rectangle so it will fit through the handle. Decorate the felt with fabric paint and any other embellishments (the simpler you make it the easier to wash if you need to). When the glue and paint is dry, wrap around the mug and ask a friend to secure in place with the hook and eye fastener.

You will need:

Unwanted CD, CD-Rom or DVD, Large photo, PVA glue (white glue), Pens, Acrylic varnish (optional)

Instructions:

Print out a photo onto standard printer paper large enough to cover your disc. Glue the photo to the disc (the side with the picture or writing on) making sure the central image is in the centre of the disc. When dry trim to size and add a message with the pens. To seal, paint over the image and the edges with PVA glue and leave to dry. Repeat. If you wish you can make your coaster extra-hardwearing by using acrylic varnish rather than PVA glue.

SILHOUETTES

LOOSE CHANGE TRAY

You will need:

A profile photo (it will be cut out so printing on standard paper is fine) Glue stick A dark shade of card Backing card Picture frame

Instructions:

Cut a piece of backing card to fit your photo frame. Glue your photo to the dark card. Carefully cut around the face in the photo, shaping to a curved line around the neck. Glue the cut out face to the backing card, so that the photo is face down. Frame your picture.

SHIRT AND TIE CARD You will need:

Sheet of A4 card Small piece of brightly coloured card Scraps of coloured paper Glue

Instructions:

Fold the card in half, to make your ‘card’. With the fold on your left, cut a slit about 1inch long down the middle of the card. Fold the top edge of the card over on the diagonal, from the centre cut to the top corners, to make the collar. Cut a tie shape from the bright card and decorate it with scraps of coloured paper. Glue your tie to the centre of your card. If necessary, add a bit of glue to keep the collar in position.

Is Dad forever losing his keys? Why not make him a tray to put on the hall table so that he can empty his pockets when he arrives home? Dad will always be able to find his keys and his loose change.

You will need:

A polystyrene tray - the sort fruit or meat comes on. Make sure it has been cleaned well. Acrylic paints

Instructions:

Simply paint your tray however you like and leave to dry.

During his first term at the University Mike’s plans of becoming the best Scarer are derailed when he crosses paths with Sulley who is a natural born Scarer. The pair are out of control as they become so competitive in trying to be the best, however this gets them kicked out of the University’s Scare Program and to make matters worse they realise they have to work together, along with a bunch of very odd monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Horible Histories–Series 4

This series looks at Henry VIII’s Cash in the Abbey, Stone Age geeks and also looks at a spooky Victorian railway. Strawberry Granita Granita is a bit like sorbet, but crunchier! It’s yummy and really easy to make. Makes 4 Ingredients 200g strawberries 15g maple syrup 10g rapeseed oil some berries to serve a few mint and/or basil leaves (optional) Method Take the stalks off the top of the strawberries. Then ask an adult to help you mix the strawberries, rapeseed oil and maple syrup together in a blender. Pour the mushy strawberry liquid into the container. Put the container in a freezer. Leave it in the freezer for 2 hours. After 2 hours, take the partly frozen liquid out of the freezer. Scrape it with a fork to make icy lumps – this will help to make it crunchier. Now put it back in the freezer and leave it for 24 hours. When you are ready to eat it, take the granita out of the freezer. Scrape the surface with a fork to take off some granita shavings. Put the shavings in a glass (or bowl) to serve. Decorate it with the berries, basil and mint if you have some.

Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation is a children’s health charity which raises funds to improve the quality of life for sick children is hospitals and hospices throughout the UK. The work the Foundation carries out is absolutely vital and greatly appreciated by the children and of course the families of those sick children. Hi, my name is Henry Horse

My name is Henry and I’m a horse, because I am a male horse I am called a stallion, female horses called mares. I love the fresh air and love roaming about in my field but I also like to go in to my stable at night where its warm. All horses, including me, love living with other animals as we are known as herd animals and we communicate by neighing. I love to eat grass but I also enjoy hay, oats, barley and bran and I absolutely love carrots, apples and of course sugar lumps...but I’m not really allowed to much sugar. I like to drink lots and lots of water. My owner rides me lots and I love to gallop and jump, but we do sometimes go out on roads which means have to wear special shoes on my hooves which are made out of metal and I have to have them trimmed every 4 weeks. We can live up to 30 years but there was once a horse called ‘Old Billy’ who was an English Barge Horse who lived until he was 62! Did you know that I can sleep both lying down and standing up and that I can gallop up to 27mph!? Also when foals (baby horses) are born they can stand up and walk within 1 to 2 hours!

“Don’t let your ponies get to FAT this summer! Now the grass is growing in the sun you must ensure that your pony remains a good weight. An easy way to do this is to use an Equine Weight tape (ask your vet, and find out if your pony is to fat, thin or just right!). Fat ponies are very prone to developing Laminitis, so you must give your ponies plenty of exercise, restrict their feeding/ grazing if required and regularly use that weight tape!”
