Olympian opening On Thursday 11th July Olympian Craig Figes will be officially opening the new build and outdoor performance space at Christ Church Primary School. This occasion will also mark the culmination of our Be The Best You Can Be! Programme. Each class will be celebrating the personal goals and be awarded with Olympic medals.

Some Enchanted Evening Every year Oakfield puts on a number of performances as part of its Arts Programme. This terms performance was entitled ‘Some Enchanted Evening.’ Act one was an adapted version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in which the audience were transported into an ethereal world of magic and mischief. The cast delivered the performance magnificently, showing true thespian ability as well as a creativity and commitment beyond their years. Act Two was entitled ‘Wonderfully Wicked’ a clever mix of songs from hit musicals, Wicked, Wizard of Oz and The Wiz. The cast devised their own script and the overall production was entirely comprised of pupils from our wide range of extra-curricular arts activity clubs including: Year 7 Drama Performers, The Muppeteers, New Musical Theatre Club, Funky Feet Dance members, Art club and the Oakfield Academy Choir. Oakfield wishes to thank our parent helpers and school staff, The Memorial Theatre, Miss Amy Morgan Bell from Tri-art Theatre for her choreography, Mr Gareth Williams for his musical arrangement, Mr Eddy Young for his technical and artistic prowess, Mrs Carol Stacey for her fabulous costumes and the dedication of Mrs Rosie Nicholson our Drama Teacher. Cast member Lily said, ‘I realised, through doing this production that I really want to act when I’m older and going on to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, London to learn more would be amazing.’ Cast member and Composer Daisy said, ‘I was focusing on the piano, before being part of ‘Some Enchanted Evening.’

Being in the show and using a piece, I had already written for the harp (which fitted really well) meant I had the opportunity to return to the harp and perform. One of the highlights was working with all our friends and making new friends from different year groups.’ Cast member Jack said, ‘I would love to be a performer and this gave me some good experience and an idea of what being in a production involves.’ Cast member Finlay said, I love performing and this was one of the highlights of my career! The cast was not too big so not too stressful! Kaitlyn, technical crew said, ‘being in the show was very fun and very busy.’

Living for Sport Oakfield marked the final visit from their Sky Sports Athlete Mentor (Living for Sport project) by staging a special presentation of Martial Arts to parents and each participating pupil was allowed to bring two invited friends. The Demonstration, led by Chris Roach (Elevation MA) Local Martial Arts Instructor (who is also one of the parents) showed an amazed audience just how skilled pupils have become during the project. Later in the day, the athlete mentor, Tom Reed led two assemblies to encompass the whole school. During the Key Stage three assembly pupils were thrilled to watch Mr Gough, their Science Teacher and Pastoral Team leader, take part in the assembly demonstration only to be thrown over Tom Reed’s shoulder. Tom then inspired pupils by talking to them about achieving confidence, discipline and motivation in life by taking part in sport. The Sports coordinator, Anna Pullen said, ‘I think it has been a worthwhile project and we have seen a real change in the attitude and confidence levels of many of the pupils concerned.’ Children said, ‘Great, getting to earn belts in Martial Arts.’ ‘I liked learning new skills and I feel calmer and more confident.’

Country dance festival Christ Church C of E First School took part in the Annual Wells Country dancing Festival on Saturday 15th June. Although the sun failed to shine all day, a lovely, fun day was had by all that took part. 5

Y CLUBS School’s out! Now it’s just a matter of finding inspiring things to do to give them a carefree and fun summer holiday! We know how tricky this can be: juggling work, time-off for family holidays, and generally thinking up and finding things for them to do. It can be a full time job in itself! Holiday play schemes can be run by the local council or privately, for the whole holiday, a week at a time or just a few days. Some play schemes concentrate on a particular sport or interest, e.g., football or drama, while others are a mixture of activities and even outings. They can be a life-saver if you work, but even if you’re at home too they can offer a break within the school holidays for your children - and you! Your child will have the opportunity to meet and form

y a d i l o H r e m m Su Activities

new friendships with similar aged local children. Holiday play schemes can be a great way for children to discover new interests and explore new activities and can be an energy-burner. You can pre-book for the days that suit you, from just one or two days to whole weeks. Popular holiday schemes are booked up very early so you need to be quick off the mark and please do check with the scheme that it will be suitable for your child. Many of these schemes also run after school and weekend activities during term time and the Summer holidays are a great time to enrol your child into a club ready for September and the beginning of the new school year. Many sports clubs will be enrolling new students for September, so if your children would like to start a new activity, now is the perfect time to arrange this.

Join us this summer holidays and experience 5 fantastic days of singing, dancing and drama classes at Stagecoach Trowbridge. For lots of children, sports teams are the ideal choice for out of school activities. With so many sports out there to choose from, there is often going to be something of interest. Sports teams are an excellent way to make friends and the whole concept of teamwork is a great life skill to have. Aside from the friendships a child can gain, sports teams are a great way of keeping fitness levels up whilst having a good time. A huge benefit to participating in sports teams – particularly at a higher level – is the opportunity to travel. Sports teams often have tours or competitions in places further afield, meaning that general fitness and cultural awareness can be increased. Sports clubs may not always be the best option for some children – some kids just aren’t wired for sports. But this doesn’t mean that they can’t get involved with out of school activites. Community groups, art clubs, Scouts, Brownies and charity fundraising are just a small sample of clubs to be involved in. Children involved in these groups can expect to make solid friendships, gain great interpersonal skills and maybe even extend their school interests to future careers. Participation in extra-curricular groups definitely gives children indispensable life skills! Joining clubs or sports teams is a great opportunity for any child, allowing them to make lots of friends as well as acquire skills that they will use throughout their entire life. Joining a sports team or extra-curricular club is one of the best opportunities any child could take and it is something that is definitely recommended!

Our holiday workshops are huge fun and jam packed with creativity. Students enjoy sessions in the performing arts and work towards staging a full scale show on the final day of the workshop. This summer, students will be staging a musical with excerpts from the hit West End show ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl. The workshops are exceptionally good value and a life line for working parents who need to find good quality holiday activities for their children. Open to all students aged 6 - 17 years, even if they don’t attend Stagecoach on a Saturday. They are a fantastic avenue in ‘trying’ Stagecoach before enrolling for the Saturday schools. Places are limited on the workshop so don’t delay and book today, by calling Principal Frederica on 0844 335 1705 or email trowbridge@stagecoach.co.uk or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/trowbridge to enrol directly via the website. The show will be performed on the last day to friends and family in The Clarendon Theatre.

SUMMER

ARTS & CRAFTS TREASURE CHESTS

DECORATE YOUR SHOES

Here is a simple way for children to store their collections. Make an accordion fold in a strip of paper and glue the first and last pages to the inside of a boxes lid and bottom. Keep some pages empty so that the collection can grow.

Why not create your own fashion design on your shoes. Using fabric pens and fabric paint you can be the talk of the town with your funky shoes.

ROCK PAINTINGS

Decorating stones and rocks is a great way for children to show their creativity this Summer. Collect a series of stones of different shapes and sizes and decorate them with pens or paints. You can turn your stones into people, animals and even monsters.

OUT AND

ABOUT

Turn off the tv, lock up the PlayStation and have a great day out with the children. The Summer holidays are nearly here and it is a great time to spend some family time together and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the normal daily routine. Whenever school holiday time comes around, are you left asking the same question? Where can I take my children to experience a great family day out? So how can you make the most of the precious time you and your children get together? If you and your partner have arranged to take some time out of the office, you don’t want to waste it by doing chores while your children sit in front of the TV all day. Family fun, not family friction should be the order of the day. Spending time with your children is also an important aspect of childhood development and happiness.

There are plenty of things to do with children in the local area, whether you’re feeling flush, looking for cheap days out or - even better - a free family tourist attraction. We are lucky to have many fantastic places to visit on our doorstep and the coast is only an hour away. Taking your kids on an educational day out can give them and you some of the best fun there is. Choose wisely and they won’t even realise they’re learning whilst playing. There are lots of child-friendly, interactive museums and historical venues around designed to excite and engage your family. Toddlers and young children understand the world around them by touching, so make sure you’re going to a place where you won’t have to constantly say ‘no – don’t touch. Farms and zoos are a great way to engage kids of all ages and again you can make the trip educational for them. Why not make a list of which animals you definitely want to see. Then once you get there, see who the first person is to spot their favourite animal. It’s always good to make a game out of the experience. Another good game is getting your children to do impressions of each animal.

It’s important to make your children aware of what to expect from the animals. Kids have to approach animals carefully and understand animals can get upset if they’re not nice. Some animals may want to rest or to hide. Get as much information as you can before you go about the animals you are going to see. A day at the seaside is the ultimate summer day out and also free. There are loads of things you can do as a family. Why not play games like “Let’s Bury Dad”, Build a line of sandcastles, then see who can squash them the fastest, Make sand angels by lying in the sand and waving your arms backwards and forwards or dig a shallow water pool for perfect splashing.”

*Bring an emergency snack and drink for the kids. And possibly even yourself! *Don’t forget your road map, even the best navigators take a wrong turn sometimes! Whatever you do or wherever you go this Summer Holiday, make sure that it is fun and enjoyable for you all. This way you will have a fantastic and memorable family day

Whatever you decide to do, here is a checklist of things you may need to remember to make the day run as smoothly as possible: *If you’re headed for an outdoor attraction, don’t forget to leave your wellies, raincoats and brolly in the back of the car (just in case). You never can tell with the British weather! Or alternatively make sure you include some sunscreen, hats and sunglasses if the weather is behaving. *It’s handy to pack up a change of clothes for the kids (little accidents happen when you least expect them) and a packet of wet wipes can be a godsend!

CHOOSING A NURSERY Nearly one million children are looked after in day in the UK and this number continues to rise so you’re not on your own when it comes to choosing the right nursery & pre-school for your child. Where to start? It can be very overwhelming and mind boggling so don’t panic, to start with you can obtain a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Services, you can then start your research! Its very important to book a visit to the nursery’s or preschools that you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are. Some things you may wish to consider and check; Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you should enquire as to provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any? Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money!! Is the nursery registered with OFSTED and ask to see the latest OFSTED report? If you work outside of your local area, would it be beneficial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?

Think of drop off’s and pick up’s and how this fits with your daily routine Does the nursery provide all meals, if so what is it and where is it cooked? What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activities For babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies? Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep? Is there an outside play area so that children can spread their wings and enjoy the fresh air? Is the nursery entrance secure? Is there a settling in period? Will your child have a key worker? Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school that you and your little one are happy with you can then start to relax and look forward to watching your child flourish & grow amongst other children of the same age.....and more importantly you can start to get some sleep at night instead of worrying!

PETS R E N COR Holiday pet care

In the excitement of preparing for a holiday or weekend away, don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets. There are a number of options to ensure your pet is cared for when you are away. You can: Ask friends and family to look after them Have a pet-sitter Take them to a boarding establishment. If you plan to take them with you on holiday Always make sure that your chosen holiday destination has all the facilities necessary for your pet’s requirements. Check with your vet that your pet is healthy and safe to travel. If your pet requires medication make sure you take this with you. Always make sure that your pet is fully vaccinated, and has had up-to-date flea and worming treatments. Make sure your pet wears a collar with an identity tag with your name and holiday address and contact details on, so if they get lost you can be reunited as quickly as possible.

Top tips for caring for animals in summer Never leave animals in a car during warm weather. Don’t let your pet get sunburnt. Make sure that all pets have access to shade and a constant supply of fresh drinking water.

Check your pets for fleas, ticks and mites. Don’t over-exercise dogs in the heat. Keep indoor fish tanks out of direct sunlight and top up the water levels of ponds. Don’t leave pets alone at home when you go away on holiday. Be wildlife-friendly in the garden - take care when using a lawn-mower or strimmer and keep toxic pesticides out of the reach of animals. Pet owners need to avoid leaving animals in cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans during warm weather, as temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C (117°F) and this may result in death. Remember: Under the Animal Welfare Act pet owners have a legal duty to care for their animals, which includes preventing suffering. Penalties are a fine of up to £20,000 and/or up to six months in prison.

Did you know that you can have your animal micro chipped? A chip is inserted which is smaller than a grain of rice and which sits under your animal’s skin for life. This way if ever its gets lost a special scanner can be used by vets and animal charities which will show where the pet owner lives. We can chip almost any animal from tortoises to elephants!
