STAY SAFE IN THE SUN T
he weather is warming up, the days are longer and there's more time to be outside doing all kinds of fun things! But if you're going to be out in the sun, especially on a hot day, you need to stay safe. Let's find out how.
PRIME TIME
Always wear sunscreen and take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. These steps are especially important between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun's rays are strongest. Put on sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun. The letters SPF stand for sun protection factor, and the number rating tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. But this isn't always true, so reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. Don't forget that your eyes need protection from ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun, and make sure they have a label saying that they block UV rays.
DRINK UP!
When you're sweating, you lose water that your body needs to work properly. So drink up and don't wait until you're thirsty — drinking before you feel thirsty helps keep the water level in your body from dropping too low (dehydration) when it's hot or you're sweating a lot with exercise.
GOT THAT HOT FEELING?
If you're out in the hot sun or you're exercising on a hot day, it's easy to get heat exhaustion. Kids get heat exhaustion when their bodies can't cool themselves fast enough. A kid with heat exhaustion might feel overheated, tired, and weak. Heat stroke is a more serious heat-related illness and can cause someone to stop sweating; to have red, hot skin; and to have a high temperature. The person might become uncoordinated, confused, or even lose consciousness. It requires emergency medical attention. The good news is that the sun doesn't have to be your enemy if you wear your sunscreen, drink your water, and take breaks when you start to feel too hot. And don't forget your sunglasses!
FREE ENTRY 24th - 25th June 2017 Trowbridge Park BA14 8AH Open from 10:00am Marching bands, entertainment, ypast, re-enactors, displays, static vehicles, trade stalls, fairground attractions. and much more. Sunday Parade followed by Drumhead Service.

CAR GAMES I
n the privacy of your own car, you can laugh as loud as you want or shout out the answers to questions. So don’t hold back when you play these games — laugh, yell, or sing your hearts out.
EATING AN ALPHABET
Let your half-starved brood describe how hungry they are in this game, best played about half an hour before you make a pit stop for food. This version of the “I’m Packing for a Picnic” game begins when you announce “I’m so hungry I could eat an aviator” (“alligator,” or “apple”). The next player adds on with a B word. She might say, “I’m so hungry I could eat an aviator and a bunny rabbit” (“belly button,” or “bologna slice”). See if you can keep it up until your family is eating zoos, zippers, or zigzags.
I SPY
Someone says, “I spy with my little eye something green.” Whoever guesses the item correctly goes next. You could limit the items to what’s in the area. Or you could get tricky and play I Spied, selecting items that you’ve already passed.
GUESS MOBILE
Name a guess master - the person who poses a guessing challenge. He or she could ask passengers to guess the colour of the next passing car, or how long before you get to the next town. Or, with three clues, what it is that someone else sees.
GUESS MY NAME
Give your child a word challenge by asking her to make as many words as she can from the letters in a phrase such as “Are we there yet?” or “When will we be at the zoo?”
In this acting game players imitate the motions, habits, and expressions of a famous person, such as an athlete, politician, musician, or actor. The clincher: No talking allowed! Players can ask Yes or No questions (which are met by a nod or a shake). The correct guesser does the next impression.
THE HOUSE ON THE HILL
GEOGRAPHY
WORD STRETCH
Invent stories about people in the houses you are driving by. What do you think they do for work? What’s their favourite food? Where do they go on holiday? Get into lots of details, such as whether they snore loudly or are afraid of spiders. Give them names, hobbies, pets, and so on.
Start with A to Z anyplace in the world: Kansas, say. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of Kansas, such as South Africa. Whoever goes next needs a place that starts with A. It has to be a real place - and no using a map!

FATHER'S DAY 28th JUNE TEN WAYS TO SPOIL DAD
1. BREAKFAST IN BED
6. PUT ON A SHOW
It’s a classic treat but also a winner. Let him relax while you bring him his favourite morning meal.
Sing and dance for your dad! Perhaps choose a song about children and fathers, Will Smith’s ‘Just the two of us’ is one of the best!
2. PAINT HIS PORTRAIT Spend time with your dad by painting or drawing him, then presenting your masterpiece as a gift.
3. WRITE HIM A POEM
7. LET HIM WATCH WHAT HE WANTS ON THE TELLY! At least for an hour or so, then get out of the house.
Rather than buying a card, create a poem for him that describes what he means to you.
8. GO FOR A WALK
4. TAKE PHOTOS
10. INTERVIEW HIM
Enjoy a family photoshoot so you can look back on the day in years to come.
5. GIVE HIM HUGS Not just one, but lots all through the day.
Enjoy being outdoors, together. Find out more about him... Ask him about his childhood, his passions in life and hopes. Perhaps write up your findings and give the article to your dad as a gift.
NATIONAL BBQ WEEK N
ational BBQ Week returns for a 20th time on May 29th. It will once again be looking to encourage even more grill thrills and gastro grilling, by ensuring that as many people get involved and go for the grill. Here are our BBQ tips:
BE A GRILL MASTER
Start with a clean, oiled grill and well stoked coals that are already white hot by the time you start cooking. Avoid flipping meat fillets over and over, cook one side and then the other and then allow to rest – the juices will regroup for max flavour. Keep an area aside for any vegetarians too. And, if possible, offer non-meat foods that benefit from your smoky grill like aubergine, courgettes, bell peppers, large mushrooms and halloumi cheese.
CHOOSE A THEME
Make your barbeque stand out with a theme. It could be Jamaican, Hawaiian, Aussie, French, oceanic, tropical, a foragers’ feast (think a lovely salad with edible flowers and the like) or a regional feast featuring local meats and cheeses. Choosing a theme might encourage your guests to both bring and sample new and interesting foods.
DECORATIONS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
You don’t need to spend a lot to dress your barbeque up and either expand on your chosen theme or just add to the atmosphere. Check out charity shops for interesting tableware, tablecloths
and candle holders. Dot citronella candles around the garden, although take care to put them beyond the reach of children.
GO LARGE WITH CONDIMENTS AND SIDE DISHES
Even if you decide to keep your offering to the classic burger, sausage and chicken combo, you can still pep things up with a selection of unusual condiments and tempting side dishes. Take a trip to your local farm shop and you’ll see there’s a wealth of chutneys and pickles out there. Many are inexpensive and might even be made in your local area. Side dishes could include herbed couscous, potato salad with wild garlic, gazpacho, rustic bread, a selection of mezze or tapas – let your imagination go!
PREPARE A SIGNATURE DRINK
The food will be the centrepiece, but a tasty drink will be welcome too. You could prepare an old fashioned lemonade, a refreshing cocktail or sangria. It doesn’t have to be complicated and it could make for a nice change from soft drinks, beer and wine.
PLAY GAMES
If your barbeque is an all-dayer, will include lots of kids or you just want some non-foody fun, lay on some games. From traditional lawn games, to something like giant snakes and ladders or even an egg and spoon race, games can fill lulls in the day and keep kids occupied.

From the Doctor’s Surgery,
DON’T LET MAN’S BEST FRIEND GET UP YOUR NOSE I
n the UK, pets follow dust as the second largest cause of allergy within the home. Any animal with fur can be the cause of an allergic reaction but the worst offenders are cats and dogs. It doesn’t matter if you have previously had a pet and were not allergic to it before, pet allergies can develop at any time. Couldn’t be further from the truth. It often surprises people that pet allergies are not caused by an animal’s fur. The allergens are found in animals’ saliva, sweat and urine. Once the saliva dries, it becomes airborne easily. Saliva, urine and sweat dry easily on an animal’s fur and skin, which is then shed around the house, and onto clothing. Small rodents’ bedding quickly becomes saturated with urine and is stirred up when the animal moves around its cage, or the cage is cleaned out.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms include frequent sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy, red or watery eyes, irritated skin and a cough. Other, less common symptoms are the loss of your sense of smell, facial pain caused by blocked sinuses, headaches and earache. Patients who have eczema or asthma are more likely to suffer from allergies. If these patients find their allergies are being troublesome, often their chest or skin will flare up also. Even if your symptoms are mild, they can still interfere with your work, your social life or your child’s activities at school. If you think you have a pet allergy, your first port of call should be a pharmacy. In my experience as a GP, many cases can be controlled using simple over-the-counter medication. Antihistamines are available in both tablet and liquid form and can be used either as required or on a regular basis. Frequent sufferers may find regular treatment more beneficial to keep symptoms at bay.
For more severe cases, prescription-strength antihistamines may be prescribed by a GP. Eye drops and nasal sprays are also available over the counter and can be combined with antihistamines or taken on their own. As with antihistamines, stronger prescription strength treatment could be made available by your GP for more troublesome symptoms.
CONTROL
You should also take steps to reduce sufferers’ exposure to allergens, especially young children. The best measure is remove any pets from the house. However, as animals are often an integral part of the family, this might not be an option. Regular outdoor grooming of dogs (not by the sufferer) greatly reduces shedding of hair and should be done regularly. Bathing a cat once or twice a week can reduce allergens in the home by up to 90%. All animals should be kept out of bedrooms, especially at night. Confining a cat or dog to one area of the house is unlikely to be 100% effective as allergens are still transferred on clothes and shoes, but it can reduce symptoms. If you come into contact with animals outside the home, change your clothes, shoes and wash your hair when arriving home. Wash animals and their bedding at least once a week. Remove carpets from the rooms animals frequent or hoover regularly with a HEPA high-filtration vacuum-cleaner. Open windows or use air filters to ventilate your house. Don’t allow pets to lick your hands or face. Wash hands after petting an animal, especially before eating or touching the face – use hand wipes if you’re out and about.

THE ESSENTIAL SUMMER FIRST AID KIT FOR FAMILIES S
chool’s out and that hopefully means lots of fun and adventures for children and adults alike. However, it’s also a good time to make sure you have an up-to-date first aid kit for any scrapes, bruises and minor injuries, whether you are at home or away this summer. Below I’ve listed the 10 essential first aid items for families this summer. 1. PLASTERS: You need a variety of different sizes and shapes to cover cuts, and waterproof are the best if you’re out and about. 2. BANDAGES: Perfect for twists and simple sprains. Pack triangular bandages and also crêpe rolled bandages. When applying a bandage, ensure it’s not too tight. A simple test is to press down on the skin, or a finger or toenail, below the area of the bandage. It will appear pale initially when you remove the pressure but the colour should return within a couple of seconds. If it doesn’t, the bandage is too tight and should be reapplied. 3. TOOLS: Don’t forget safety pins, scissors, tweezers (essential for taking out splinters and stings before they get infected) and sticky tape. 4. THERMOMETER: Preferably a digital one. Remember, the normal body temperature is 36.5 to 37.5 degrees Celsius. Anything above this could indicate a fever. 5. CREAMS: It’s always a good idea to have a few simple creams on standby. A simple antiseptic ointment can be useful for minor cuts and grazes as well as a cream or spray to apply to insect bites or stings. A mild steroid cream, hydrocortisone, can be bought without prescription and can be useful for simple rashes. A word of caution though, this should not be used on the delicate skin of the face and should always be used with caution when treating children. 6. PILLS: You will need painkillers such as paracetamol (or infant paracetamol for children), ibuprofen and maybe consider
travel sickness pills. Anti-histamine tablets (or liquid for children) are useful for mild allergic reactions, such as following an insect bite.
7. ANTISEPTIC SOLUTION: You’ll recognise these as well-known brands such as Dettol, TCP and Savlon, all of which contain germ killing agents for use on minor skin cuts and grazes, bites and stings. 8. RE-HYDRATION SOLUTION: Sachets of rehydration mixture, containing a blend of salts and sugars, can be mixed with water and drunk in cases of sickness and diarrhoea, and can be a great help in terms of getting people up and about again. 9. GLOVES: If you are giving someone first aid, be sure to protect yourself from infection via blood or vomit by wearing gloves. Some gloves contain latex, so if you are concerned that someone in your family may have a latex allergy, look for latexfree gloves instead. 10. FIRST AID MANUAL: Keep a manual handy of the most common injuries, such as burns, stings, cuts and breakages. The Red Cross and the St. John’s Ambulance Service both provide apps you can download to your device so you have a handy guide to first aid on the go. Have a great and safe holiday!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY AT BITHAM BROOK On International Women's day recently the children at Bitham Brook Primary School learned about some of the amazing things invented by women (such as the computer, wiper blades, the dishwasher and chocolate chip cookies!). Inspired by this, teachers asked the children to invent something useful as their homework task. Inventions included: A hover hoover, a cleaning robot (pictured), an oven which will cook anything that you ask it to, a handy portable kit for adults taking warfarin, an app to help locate missing pets, gloves which will write and calculate for you and a pizza-making robot (pictured). David Ross, Headteacher, said 'The children were full of ideas and really keen to create their inventions and I was amazed to see how much thought went into their work. This was a topic which really inspired them all and maybe one day one of our pupils will feature on Dragons' Den!'

LOUISE KILMINSTER WINS WILTSHIRE LIFE TEACHER OF THE YEAR! Avenue Primary School Year 6 teacher, Louise Kilminster was awarded the Wiltshire Life “Teacher of the Year 2017” Award at a large, glitzy ceremony on Friday. Louise, who has worked at the Avenue Primary School for just over 20 years was described as patient, caring, committed and driven. She has a real love of the school and nurtures each and every child so they can develop and grow to their full potential. Mrs Kilminster was nominated by Stuart Porter, Headteacher at the Avenue School, who commented
how difficult it was to select just one teacher from the Avenue school, such is the quality of teachers we have. Whereas three years ago the School was in special measures and our results placed us in the bottom 5% of school in the country, now, with our outstanding outcomes, we are in the top 25%.

MP VISITS WESTWOOD WITH IFORD SCHOOL At Westwood with Iford School we were very excited to welcome Conservative MP for Chippenham and the local area Michelle Donelan to our school. Michelle very kindly took time out of her busy schedule to attend our celebration assembly, presenting the attendance and Westwood Wonders of the Week trophies (complete with drum roll!). Michelle also took in a tour of the school, talking to staff and answering some fantastic questions from the children as she went around.
said “We’re very keen to support our local school and we can’t wait to hear all about their first game in their new kit.” ADI Process Pipework Ltd, which is based in Mells, provides complete process and mechanical pipework solution from concept to completion including pipework design, project management, fabrication and installation. Sarah Atkins, from Mells School, said "The children were so excited to have received the new kit from ADI and are eager to wear it at their forthcoming football match. It was great to see the delight the new kit brought to the team’s faces and we are extremely grateful to ADI for providing their support and helping to ensure our players look and feel the part."
WESTWOOD WITH IFORD SCHOOL’S MOTHER’S MONDAY Recently Westwood with Iford School once again welcomed mums and special people into school to celebrate Mother’s Monday. Before school had even started we had mums in the radio studio to join our radio club with their first ever live broadcast online for the Mother’s Monday Breakfast Show. The children did an amazing job and were so confident and our mums were superb on the weather, too! After a whole school assembly, everyone was invited to join their children in class for a day of learning. It was fantastic to see how many mums had taken time out of their busy schedules to come into school.

BLUES AND BEYOND!
EASTER EXPERIENCE
A sell-out audience was treated to a fantastic evening of music and poetry performed by talented pupils from all year groups in Oakfield Academy's Blues and Beyond concert recently. And what diversity was on show! From individual performers, singers and instrumentalists to large group performance and covering many musical genres…from traditional blues to rock, 19th century opera to 21st century pop. The evening was hosted with style and humour by Stan Butler-White and Sam Cotterell and stage management, lights, sound and digital presentation was also run by our great technical team of students (Gethin, Ronnie, Eric, Ethan and Alex). An impressive first for Oakfield was achieved by Immy Draper in Year 8, who became the first student to accompany the choir at a concert – just one of many amazing performances during an unforgettable evening. Well done to EVERYONE who took part!
Children from Sambourne CE VC Primary School in Warminster were treated to an ‘Easter Experience’ led by their Church team. Children explored different aspects of the Easter story through creative and drama activities such as re-enacting The Last Supper. They particularly enjoyed using smarties to represent the colours linked to different parts of the Easter story such as green to remind them of the palm leaves. The younger children made Easter crowns, Easter gardens and learnt an Easter song. All children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained a much better understanding of why we celebrate Easter through these brilliant activities.
MATHS CHALLENGE
SPORT STARS VISIT OAKFIELD
Before Easter Mrs Thompson took two Year 8 and 2 Year 9, former Selwood pupils to Millfield school to take part in the UK Team Maths Challenge. This is a highly prestigious event which the pupils have been training for after school for some weeks. We were delighted to come 11th out of the 29 schools who competed. All pupils had a lovely day and we are immensely proud of them.
On Wednesday 22 March Oakfield Academy welcomed sports stars Julian Gollay (Commonwealth tripple jumper) and Grant Fielder (World mountain bike champion) to their Superschools fund-raising event. Pupils were sponsored for doing a circuit of fitness exercises. Grant then did a fantastic bike stunt display on the school yard for the pupils to watch. Money raised will go towards supporting our Olympic and Paralympic teams.
