A Bucketful of Dinosaurs Children in Key Stage One are currently enjoying a topic based on the book ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’ by Ian Whybrow, which sees Harry and his Gran exploring a box of dinosaurs they find in the attic. Pupils have created their own attic where they are encouraged to explore, sort and label materials that they find. One pupil was so intrigued by the metals he had found in the ‘attic’ he wrote a letter to Andy McPherson at Keyford Engineering asking him how metals are currently used in his company. Mr. McPherson kindly wrote back explaining about the different types of metals and how they are used to make lots of different interesting things such as helicopters and cars along with samples of the metal for the children to see. Pupils also looked at different types of wood and were very fortunate to visit the bench by the river that local sculptor Anthony Rogers had made. Mr. Rogers talked to the children about the wood he used to make the bench and the children learnt about counting rings on a tree to determine its age. The children are now looking forward to seeing Mr. Bristow from Oldford Dairy who will be visiting the school to talk to the pupils about plastic packaging. With the help from the community and local businesses this topic really is being brought to life for the pupils!
Heroes and heroines Christ Church Primary School have been celebrating Book Week with a ‘Heroes and Heroines’ theme, where children from the school and Key Centre Nursery chose to dress up as their favourite Hero or Heroine from a fictional book. This was part of a whole week devoted to promoting reading throughout the school.

Book Week at Vallis First School The pupils and teachers at Vallis First School thoroughly enjoyed themselves at ‘Book Week’, which started with a special assembly and headteacher, Mrs Pauley, showed the children her favourite story books. During the week children were given the opportunity to come to school dressed as characters from their favourite books and encouraged to tell each other their favourite stories. It wasn’t just the pupils who were telling the stories, teachers moved around the school swapping classes reading to the children. Neptune Class especially enjoyed Miss.Plumridge’s story of a fierce shark in a pop-up book! Children in reception were very fortunate to have a special visitor, Mr Steve Maynard a local story teller, who read stories that captivated the imaginations of the youngsters. With so many avid readers at the school ‘Book Week’ was a great success!
A visit to Kilve Court The Year Four children from Vallis Primary School enjoyed the team building and challenging activities on offer at Kilve Court. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore the local area and increase the children’s skills and confidence.
New languages at Oakfield Summer holiday activity week The summer holidays saw a week of exciting activities held for pupils of Critchill School. Activities included narrow boating with Young Bristol along the River Avon, where pupils had the opportunity to steer as well as view fantastic sights including the SS Great Britain. There was a day of activities in school, including Jewelry-making, chocolate making, and Olympic-themed flag making. A visit to Boomerang Soft Play was enjoyed by some of the younger pupils and on the final day the pupils received some tuition in circus skills from Shooting Stars. An enjoyable week was had by pupils and staff.
We are delighted to announce Spanish is the third language taught at Oakfield Academy in Frome. Students who are already learning French and German in Years 7 & 8 are now given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Spanish language and culture in Years 5 & 6 for half of the academic year. During the other half, French is the language of choice. In Year 7, Japanese is also offered as an Enrichment activity, so Oakfield is now moving towards Asia!
Jungle Reading Christ Church Primary School has introduce a ‘Jungle Gazebo’ to encourage reading in school for a 2 week period. The ‘Jungle Explorer’ tells stories and does lots of activities with the children to encourage them to read a variety of stories on the theme of ‘Jungles’. All of the children had a fantastic time and found lots of fun in new books

Sketch the face or design on the surface of the pumpkin. If you make a mistake, use a damp cloth to wipe it away -- marks from dry-erase markers or grease pencils should come off easily. Use a paring knife to cut along each line. Use your finger to push the cut-out pieces out of the pumpkin. Using these steps and a little creativity, you can make a unique pumpkin easily. Here are some ideas for customizing your pumpkin:
How to carve a pumpkin
• Instead of cutting a lid, cut off the entire top of your pumpkin in a zigzag line that resembles spiky hair. • Hold your knife at a slight inward angle as you cut out your design rather than cutting straight through the pumpkin. This will leave a thin rim of visible pumpkin flesh around each hole. When you light your jack-o’lantern, this will create an orange glow around your design. You can use different cutting angles to create patterns of light and shadow on your pumpkin’s surface. • Use leftover pieces of pumpkin to make ears, eyes or a nose. Attach these pieces using toothpicks. • Rather than cutting a face into your pumpkin, cut another design, like a cat, a bat or a message to trick-ortreaters. • You can also make memorable pumpkins by using stencils or carving your design as a cut-out.

Pumpkin Seed Necklace This pumpkin seed necklace, made in Halloween colours, makes a great accessory for Halloween and perfect for a witch’s costume! Alternatively, paint in more autumnal colours.
You will need:
Pumpkin seeds (roasted) Paint (orange, black, white and green) Needle and thread (Kitchen foil to put seeds on while you paint them)
Instructions:
Paint your pumpkin seeds in orange, green, white and black. The easiest way to do this is to put them on kitchen foil so that they will not stick to anything while they dry. But it is a very messy job! When your seeds are dry, thread your needle with a length of thread long enough to go over your head with 3 or 4 inches to spare. Put your seeds a few at a time in a pile on newspaper or a thin sponge. One by one push the needle down through the seed - when you have pierced the seed safely, pick it up and pull it through the thread. When your thread is about two thirds filled, knot the ends together tightly. Note: you need a sharp needle for this so make sure children are well supervised or that an adult does the threading.
Halloween Candle Jars These candle jars are simple and great fun to make, and a very effective Halloween decoration. But an adult will need to supervise everything to do with the candle - including, of course, lighting it!
You will need:
Jars of all shapes and sizes and appropriate candles to fit them Tissue paper - orange, white, purple or black Black construction paper Glue Scissors Black felt tip marker
Instructions:
You can get very creative making your Halloween candle jars, and we are sure you will come up with many different ideas. Basically you wrap the jar in a piece of tissue paper, insert the candle and light it! You create the effect you want either by cutting out pieces of the tissue paper, or by sticking extra pieces of paper on, or just by drawing your design with black felt tip marker.
Pumpkin Bag This cute little pumpkin bag is simply made with felt and ribbon, but it is good sewing practise for beginners. Use it for storing your Halloween treats or perhaps for giving a Halloween gift.
You will need:
Orange felt Black felt Black embroidery thread Green ribbon
Instructions:
Lay the pieces of orange felt on top of one another. Cut away two of the corners in a curve. Cut face pieces from black felt and sew them (or stick them) to one of orange pieces. Use blanket stitch to sew the two pieces of orange felt together. Leave the straight edge open. About 1/2 inch in from the top of the bag carefully snip small vertical holes, leaving about 1inch between them, all the way around the bag. Starting in the front of the face, thread the ribbon through the slits (a darning needle to push the ends through will help). Pulling and tying the ribbon as a drawstring will make the pumpkin round.

Kids love any excuse to play party games - and so they should!. Even if you are not having your own Halloween party, perhaps you can get a group of friends around to dress up and play some Halloween party games? And if you are having a Halloween party, there are some great ideas here for you!
Mummy Wrap Mummy Wrap is a fun Halloween party game for children of all ages. Buy some cheap rolls or toilet paper and perhaps some crepe paper streamers in Halloween colours. Split the kids up into teams of two. One child will be the “mummy” and the other is in charge of wrapping up the child like a mummy... When you start playing the music the teams can start wrapping up the When you turn the music off the kids need to stop. The team whose mummy is more mummified (or wrapped) wins. Older children can have even more fun if you turn the lights right down when you turn the music on - it makes it much harder and they will get the giggles!

Pick Their Brains
Ghost Busters
Cook a large pot of different shaped pasta such as spirals or macaroni. Drain and cool completely. Place cooled pasta in a large plastic bowl and add a few olives. Then add some wrapped sweets like mini fun sized chocolate bars. Cover the bowl with material that you’ve cut into a decorative shape like a pumpkin or monsters head, or use a scary cloth or rubber mask that you don’t mind cutting in to. Once the bowl is covered, cut a slit which is just large enough for the children to put their hands through, no larger: they should not be able to see the contents of the bowl. Sit the kids in a circle and let them take turns digging into the bowl to find the sweets. They won’t be able to see into the bowl and the icky texture of the pasta along with the olives will feel like brains!
First make a collection of ghosts, or get the children to cut out their own ghosts. Now divide the players into two groups. Send one team from the room while the other team hides the ghosts. Make sure you stipulate what level of hiding is acceptable - we usually say that some part of the ghost must be visible - and whether some pieces of furniture are off-limits. The first team now returns and tries to find all the ghosts. They then get a turn to hide the ghosts. Variations: An adult hides all the ghosts and the children compete with each other to find them. Add a forfeit to the back of one or two ghosts (without necessarily telling the children!) Whoever finds those ghosts must do the forfeit before the next round of the game. Add a bonus prize to the back of one or two of the ghosts instead!
Halloween Graveyard Hunt Guess the Ghost Decorate your garden to resemble a scary graveyard or just add lots of scary things. You can add cut out black felt bats, plastic spiders, fake web, fake tombstone, jack o lanterns and even provide scary music... Hide prizes and treats amongst the plants and decorations and let the kids go on a graveyard hunt. For older kids you can even have a disguised adult or two hiding around a spooky corner, but please don’t do this with younger children as it can really traumatise them!
You will need: a blindfold. Sit the children in a big circle. Put some music on and take it in turns for one child to be blindfolded and walk around the outside of the circle, touching the other children’s heads. When the music stops, the child that the child is touching must let out a ghostly wail. The person who is ‘it’ must try and guess which child is the ghost. If they guess correctly they swap around. If they do not guess correctly they go around the circle again.
What’s the time, Mrs Witch? You will need: a witch’s hat and broom; a spacious room. This is a simple variation on the ‘What’s the time, Mr Fox’ game. Elect one player to be Mrs Witch. They can put on the witch’s hat and hold the broom. Each of the other players stands at one end of the room with the witch at the other, with her back to the other players. The players ask: ‘What’s the time, Mrs Witch?’ and the Witch shouts out a time, eg. 7 o’clock. The other players take the corresponding number of steps in the direction of the witch. When the players get close to the witch the witch can then should out ‘midnight’ and chase the other players. Whoever the witch catches is out of the game.

Fireworks “Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason, why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot” Fireworks are fun but we must also remember they can be dangerous. If you are not going to an organised fireworks event this year and plan to see off fireworks at home, make sure that everyone knows all about how to stay safe. • Stand well back • Never go near a firework that has been lit, even if it hasn’t gone off as it could still explode • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them • Wear gloves when using sparklers and hold them at arms length away from you • Put used sparklers hot end down in to a bucket of sand or water • Keep pets indoors • Never throw used (or unused) fireworks on a bonfire • Never pick up a firework which may be left over, it may still be active

Did you know... • Bonfire night is over 400 years old! It dates back to 1605 when Guy Fawkes and a group of other men tried to blow up Parliament. • Guy Fawkes was not the leader of the Gunpowder Plot, it was actually a man called Robert Catesby. • There is an island to the North of Santa Cruz called Isla Guy Fawkes...nobody knows why it is called this....maybe he planned to escape there. • Fireworks were invented in China back in the 12th Century (AD 1100)! • A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph, however the shell can reach as high as 200 metres. • The worlds largest recorded firework display was held in Portugal in 2006 and it featured 66,326 fireworks! • At first fireworks were only orange and white, new colours were made in the middle ages by adding different salts. The hardest colour to create is blue • 90% of the worlds fireworks are made in China. • Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat as a blow-torch.
Make sure you enjoy this year’s firework displays but please remember to stay safe.
Maintain your ride! To ensure your scooter or skate board lasts, you need to make sure you maintain it. Your bearings are the inner part of the wheels which enables a smooth ride and they need to be checked to get the most from your board or scooter. Now before you test your bearings, you want to make sure the problem isn’t dirt. Make sure all your bearings are clean, and if they’re all clean, you’re ready to test your bearings and see if there’s a problem. On a skateboard the best way to do a bearing test is the wheel roll. To do this, roll all your wheels at the
same time. If one wheel stops rolling before any of the others, you know that bearing is probably ready to be replaced. On a scooter, the easiest way to test the bearing is to remove the wheel and spin the wheel in your fingers. If the wheel feels clunky or makes a grinding noise it is possible the bearings will need to be replaced. To make sure your scooter is safe to ride always check the wheels bolts are tight as well as the bolts on the clamp, this will stop the bars from moving. The headset also needs to be tightened and any other bolts or clamps on your scooter.
Customise your ride! There are many different types of skateboards and scooters available, and customizing your ride will ensure your board or scooter stands out from the rest. Grip tape can be changed and is the adhesive backed, gritty covering that lies on the top of the skateboard or deck. Similar to sandpaper, it helps your shoes grip to your deck. Because the grip tape sits on the top of your skateboard, this is a very noticeable way to make your skateboard look different from the standard designs. Wheels, clamps, bars and grips come in every colour you could think of and are easy to change to enable you to have a unique look to your ride!

Halloween biscuits Simply use rich tea or other plain biscuits, cover them with melted chocolate and draw on a spiders web. Use liquorice bootlaces for spiders legs on cakes or biscuits. If you are more of a cupcake person, what about trying jam in the middle of the cake? Using a piping bag and long, thin nozzle squeeze jam into the centre of the cupcake to give that oozing blood effect when cut...
