Ubley school holds its own literature festival Not to be outdone by the Bath Literature Festival, Ubley Primary School held its own on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th March. Back in September , the children and teachers at Ubley Primary School began an exciting partnership with the Bath Festival team & 5x5x5=creativity. The aim of this new partnership was to explore how powerful creative writing can be for improving young people’s confidence and their engagement with their learning. This work combines the creative writing practice developed through the Festivals well established “Write Team” project and the philosophy of 5x5x5=creativity where children are recognised as innate and creative knowledge builders, explorers and coconstructors of their learning. This collaboration has offered the school opportunities to establish relationships with artists, writers and musicians and experience festival events to support the development of creative environments for creative learning. Creative writer Karl Bevis, has been visiting the school on a weekly basis working with Reception to Year 6. He is a trained actor, director and creative writer and his specialism is using drama for writing. Working in partnership with the children and staff, Karl has helped develop the children’s creative writing skills through drama, music and art. In addition the teachers have undergone INSET training delivered by the Write Project team at Baths Holborne Museum, which focused on using art as inspiration for creative writing On Thursday 7th March, Hannah Broadway, a children’s book illustrator, spent time with Key Stage 1 children (infants) and introduced her characters as puppets. She read one of her books ‘Monkey and Robot in the Garden’ and the children completed a group picture of
4
the story(see photo). On Friday morning the Key Stage 2 (juniors) children worked with Jim Smith, author of “ I am not a loser” who talked about his life as an author and had fun showing the children some of his illustrations. The project was concluded by the school holding its own literature festival in Ubley Parish Hall during Friday afternoon. There was a wide range of work on display that demonstrated how the children’s work had been influenced by the work they had done with Karl Bevis over the last four terms. The pupils were on hand to explain their work, answer questions and encourage visitors to take part in the activities they had designed. Parents and school governors were impressed by the quality of the children’s work and how the children confidently discussed and explained their exhibits. The afternoon included a live performance by Class 1 of “Splash” - a story they had written themselves and performed with added actions (see photo) alongside their heartwarming performance of “We’re going on a Bear Hunt” which they had learnt off by heart. Class 2 contributed some very thought provoking poetry on friendship. Class 3 displayed a selection of books they had written and made (both fiction and non-fiction based), pupil book reviews as well as inviting visitors to try some of the activities they had tried with Karl e.g. writing a sentence or sentences that did not contain the letter ‘e’. The pupils, staff and governors have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the project and a wide selection of the children’s work is currently on display in the Guildhall in Bath until mid April, showing the high standard of creative writing that has been achieved.
Success at St Keyna Since being rewarded with a £600 grant from B&NES Council for their contribution to the “Good Ideas Grant to Stop Bullying”, the children at St Keyna Primary have been working hard to put their exciting initiatives into action, culminating in an “Anti Bullying Day” which was held on April 19th. Activities were designed and ran by the children themselves to get across their inspirational message: “It’s okay to be different.” These included a poster competition, short films with an anti-bullying theme, a large mural featuring the children’s drawings and a “What to do if you’re being bullied” leaflet. In the afternoon, a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils raised £200 selling cakes, key-rings, stickers, bookmarks and wristbands all with a anti-bullying message with some of the profits
being donated to Childline. Ashleigh and Caitlyn said “It’s been fun working with the younger children and all the efforts to stop bullying shows that we care for each other.” As one of Stonewall’s School Champions, staff and pupils at St Keyna have made a determined commitment to tackle homophobic bullying and celebrate difference. St Keyna also had its first meeting of the ‘E Team’ – a group made up of children who’ve been elected by their classmates, staff and governors to ensure that these positive messages of equality and inclusion are continued for many years to come at St Keyna.

June date for Keynsham public regeneration event announced The next opportunity for Keynsham residents to hear about the progress being made by Bath & North East Somerset Council and Willmott Dixon on the £34 million regeneration of Keynsham town centre has been announced. On Wednesday June 26th 2013, 6.30pm, people will be able to attend an Open Office event at Riverside some 100 feet above ground overlooking the construction site to get a once in a lifetime view of history in the making as the construction site takes place in front of their eyes. Those who attend will also get the opportunity to: • View a short presentation about the next construction steps for the project; • Ask questions about the project to the construction team; • View the contents of the 1963 Keynsham time capsule and take photos of the artefacts; • Take photographs from the windows some 100 feet from ground level and Tweet them using the hashtag #keynregen
Councillor David Bellotti (Lib-Dem, Lyncombe), Cabinet Member for Community Resources, said, “The previous event held in April was very successful and well received by residents. Bath & North East Somerset Council wants to give the opportunity for all residents to stay informed about the progress of the regeneration, so we have set the time slightly later so that people who have work commitments during the day can more easily attend.” For those people who cannot attend, our website provides the very latest information on the regeneration at www. bathnes.gov.uk/keynshamregen The scheme includes new space for shops and restaurants, new library and One Stop Shop for local public sector services, new streets and spaces for markets and events, and low carbon sustainable Council offices. A vastly improved town centre will encourage private sector investment into Keynsham resulting in new jobs, new homes and opportunities for local people. Get involved… Numbers are limited to 30 and will be booked on a first come, first served basis. Light refreshments will be provided. People can get in contact via keynsham.site@ willmottdixon.co.uk or can call 0117 986 8941.
Art in the playground Question: What do you get when you mix together a primary school, a secondary school and a fine arts society ? Answer: A fantastic mural in your playground ! Thanks to a very kind donation by the Mendip Decorative Fine Arts Society and some fantastic painting by the Year 12 students of Chew Valley School, the children of Chew Stoke Church School have a wonderful mural on permanent display in their playground. The mural was painted from designs drawn by the children of Chew Stoke which were expertly turned into a wonderful painting by the students from Chew Valley, under the direction of art teacher Justine Thorley and art technician Abs Pearson. The mural features animals seen in the local area badgers, foxes, squirrels, owls, kingfishers and hedgehogs which just happen to give their names to the classes at Chew Stoke Church School. Many of the younger children left their own mark by using handprints to make up the trees in the design.

ARTS & CRAFTS DAD PHOTO FRAME
MUG WARMER
You will need:
A5 card (we used A4 and cut in half) Stickers and any other embellishments you have Glue 3 Photographs
Instructions:
Draw two D’s and an A shape onto the card, and cut out. Use a small pair of scissors to cut out the inside of the letters, too (younger children will need adult help or supervision). Decorate your letters. We simply used stickers but you can use gems, ribbons, sequins, pompoms or anything else from your craft box. Glue a photo to the back of each letter so that it fills the aperture. Trim any overhanging bits of photo away. Layer the letters so they overlap slightly, spelling out the word “Dad”, and glue together. You could laminate the photo frame to make it last, or enclose the whole thing within a larger Perspex frame.
PHOTO COASTER
You will need:
Felt Fabric paint Self adhesive hook and eye fasteners Optional, fabric glue and any embellishments you like.
Instructions:
Measure your felt around your Dad’s favourite mug. Cut out a rectangle about ½ inch shorter than the mug and long enough to fit around the mug with an inch overlap. Shape the ends of the rectangle so it will fit through the handle. Decorate the felt with fabric paint and any other embellishments (the simpler you make it the easier to wash if you need to). When the glue and paint is dry, wrap around the mug and ask a friend to secure in place with the hook and eye fastener.
You will need:
Unwanted CD, CD-Rom or DVD, Large photo, PVA glue (white glue), Pens, Acrylic varnish (optional)
Instructions:
Print out a photo onto standard printer paper large enough to cover your disc. Glue the photo to the disc (the side with the picture or writing on) making sure the central image is in the centre of the disc. When dry trim to size and add a message with the pens. To seal, paint over the image and the edges with PVA glue and leave to dry. Repeat. If you wish you can make your coaster extra-hardwearing by using acrylic varnish rather than PVA glue.
SILHOUETTES
LOOSE CHANGE TRAY
You will need:
A profile photo (it will be cut out so printing on standard paper is fine) Glue stick A dark shade of card Backing card Picture frame
Instructions:
Cut a piece of backing card to fit your photo frame. Glue your photo to the dark card. Carefully cut around the face in the photo, shaping to a curved line around the neck. Glue the cut out face to the backing card, so that the photo is face down. Frame your picture.
SHIRT AND TIE CARD You will need:
Sheet of A4 card Small piece of brightly coloured card Scraps of coloured paper Glue
Instructions:
Fold the card in half, to make your ‘card’. With the fold on your left, cut a slit about 1inch long down the middle of the card. Fold the top edge of the card over on the diagonal, from the centre cut to the top corners, to make the collar. Cut a tie shape from the bright card and decorate it with scraps of coloured paper. Glue your tie to the centre of your card. If necessary, add a bit of glue to keep the collar in position.
Is Dad forever losing his keys? Why not make him a tray to put on the hall table so that he can empty his pockets when he arrives home? Dad will always be able to find his keys and his loose change.
You will need:
A polystyrene tray - the sort fruit or meat comes on. Make sure it has been cleaned well. Acrylic paints
Instructions:
Simply paint your tray however you like and leave to dry.

Ever since Mike was a little monster he dreamt of being a Scarer and as everyone knows only to well that all the best Scarer’s come from Monsters University. During his first term at the University Mike’s plans of becoming the best Scarer are derailed when he crosses paths with Sulley who is a natural born Scarer. The pair are out of control as they become so competitive in trying to be the best, however this gets them kicked out of the University’s Scare Program and to make matters worse they realise they have to work together, along with a bunch of very odd monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Strawberry Granita Granita is a bit like sorbet, but crunchier! It’s yummy and really easy to make. Makes 4 Ingredients 200g strawberries 15g maple syrup 10g rapeseed oil some berries to serve a few mint and/or basil leaves (optional) Method Take the stalks off the top of the strawberries. Then ask an adult to help you mix the strawberries, rapeseed oil and maple syrup together in a blender. Pour the mushy strawberry liquid into the container. Put the container in a freezer. Leave it in the freezer for 2 hours. After 2 hours, take the partly frozen liquid out of the freezer. Scrape it with a fork to make icy lumps – this will help to make it crunchier. Now put it back in the freezer and leave it for 24 hours. When you are ready to eat it, take the granita out of the freezer. Scrape the surface with a fork to take off some granita shavings. Put the shavings in a glass (or bowl) to serve. Decorate it with the berries, basil and mint if you have some.

A NEW
CHALLENGE Is your life go go go?? What with work, kids and everything else that life throws our way, it’s amazing during the daily grind we ever find a few moments of quiet time but it’s been known to happen. Why not grab the bull by the horns and take advantage of that small window of spare time you have and do something ‘for you’. Why not take up a new hobby or even learn something new. Just because you have a small bit of spare time on your hands doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend it cleaning or slogging it out in the gym! Why not embrace the shabby chic/vintage revival which is sweeping the nation and learn how to make some fabulous things for your home and save yourself some money at the same time. You could learn how to sew and crochet, paint and make pottery. With your new found hobby you’ll be re-vamping your home with all of your amazing hard work. You could join a local club to fill that bit of spare time, not only will you be enjoying yourself but will also have the opportunity to make some new friends – a photography club, a dance class or why not join a singing group. Singing has some great benefits that most of us are probably unaware of; as you take deep breaths during singing more oxygen reaches the brain and makes you more alert plus using facial expressions improves the muscle tone in your face, throat, neck and jaw thereby promoting a youthful appearance!

PETS R E N COR I am the only reptile that has a shell, so that my body is protected and my shell is made up from 60 different bones that are all connected together. We are a cold blooded reptile which means that our blood is the same temperature as the surrounding air so if we live outside we hibernate over the winter. There are over 40 different species of tortoise and the easier species to look after are the Herman tortoise and the spurthighed tortoise. We all like to have good amounts of natural light and we like to go outside into the garden too. It is also important that we have access to shade as we can get very hot in the sunshine. We don’t drink lots but we like to always have clean water if we need it and we like to eat a range of wild plants such as dandelions, chicory, sow thistle, white clover and wild radish flowers. We enjoy grazing on safe garden plants and grass too. I am very happy when I am allowed to wander free in my owner’s garden. He has a wooden fence around the garden so I cannot get out and I am allowed to wander wherever I like. My owner puts a box full of hay in the corner of the garden for me and when the sun starts to go down I wander back to my box for the night. We are one of the oldest and most primitive groups of reptiles and we have outlived many other species.
