Castle Primary School in Keynsham was delighted to play host to North Somerset MP, Jacob Rees Mogg, on Friday 7 June. After being shown round the school by proud Year 6 pupils Jasmine, Evan and Mitchell, Jacob and his agent, Margaret, tucked into a traditional Friday school meal of fish and chips. The rain held off long enough for Jacob to see the school’s extensive range of play activities before visiting the new Iron Age hut and joining in with one of the regular campfire sessions which are held twice a week. Reflecting on his visit, Jacob said “I was extremely impressed both by the dedication to learning and the happiness of the pupils. It is an inspirational school which uses its facilities to the best effect”, and extended an invitation to Castle’s pupils to visit him at Westminster. Headteacher, Kristian Hancock said, “It was lovely to welcome Jacob to the school and the children enjoyed sharing all the brilliant things they do at Castle. The children are very much looking forward to going to London”.

Rugby summer camps Whilst most of the country will be making the most of the last couple of weeks of the summer holidays, and the Bath Rugby squad are well into the swing of pre-season training, spare a thought for the hard-working Bath Rugby Community team, who will be hosting a range of Summer Camps. Starting with a two day Minis camp (7-12 years) at Castle Cary RFC on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August, and finishing at the Recreation Ground with a two day Youth camp (13-16 years) on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th August, the camps are open to both boys and girls and split into age groups, so your rugby mad youngster is bound to find something to suit them! The Summer Camps are an ideal chance for children interested in rugby to learn a bit more about the game, brush up on their skills before the new season starts, and have fun whilst they are at it! Each camp has a built-in visit from some of the players, along with a complimentary ticket for Bath’s pre-season game at the Recreation Ground against the Ospreys on Friday 30th August. “Every year Bath Rugby’s Community Team deliver skills coaching at our Summer Camps at a level suitable for all players to return to their schools and clubs prepared for the new season,” said Bath Rugby’s Community Rugby Manager, Steve Middleton, adding, “This year, for the youth groups we will be providing an insight into the use of video analysis, using Premiership footage. All the camps will remain safe and fun, whilst bringing out the best in the camp participants.”

We have the following camps on offer this summer: • Two days Mini Camp at Castle Cary RFC for 7-12 years (Weds 14th and Thurs 15th August) • One day Youth Clinic at castle Cary RFC for 13-16 years (Friday 16th August) • Three days Mini Camp at the Bath Rec Tues for 7-12 years (Tues 27th, Weds 28th and Thurs 29th August) • Two days Youth Camp at the Bath Rec for 13-16 years (Thurs 29th and Fri 30th August) For more information and to reserve your place visit www.rugbycamps.co.uk.

Bee hunting Whole school visits Slimbridge One hundred children and 14 staff and parent volunteers from Chew Magna Primary took part in a whole school trip to Slimbridge Wetland Centre in Gloucestershire recently. The visit included educational sessions tailored to each age group of children. Year Six pupils, Chloe and Mollie (11), write: “Once we got to Slimbridge we were introduced to the staff who told us what we were going to do for the day and what we needed. Then we split into our classes and wandered around the swan area. After that, we saw a rare goose and many other wonderful different types of birds. One pupil named one of the birds ‘Freaky Gary’ after it followed them around all day! “The whole school met up at the otter sanctuary ready to have a talk about otters. We learnt about the otters’ past lives before they came to Slimbridge; their names were: Minnie, Flo and Haha. We watched the keeper feed them their fish.” “We saw lots of swans and one even had fluffy cygnets which were really cute,” added Jane, aged 7. “Afterwards we went to see the otters, water voles and a harvest mouse. Then we had a lesson about how and what birds eat.” “The children gained a lot from their day exploring the different parts of the centre and learning about how different species of birds collect their prey,” added class teacher Marie Mallett, who organised the visit. “The definite highlight for the younger classes, though, was the time spent in Welly Boot Land.”

Bees, dragonflies, toads and wildflowers were the lessons of the day when Woodpecker Class, from Chew Stoke Church School, visited the Chew Valley Lake. The Children, who are fortunate to have the lake within walking distance from their school, spent the day outside learning all about the environment in which they live. They learned to identify different varieties of bumble bee and wildflowers as well as learning about trees and birds. Whilst at the lake, the children also enjoyed a talk from Mr Bob Handford from the Fisheries Department of Bristol Water. This was just one part of their learning during the School’s Environment Week, when the children study topics related to the area in which they live. Other exciting activities during the week included visits to the Community Farm in Chew Magna, pond dipping in the River Chew and a visit from Wessex Water. Pictured: Children from Woodpecker Class identifying a bumble bee before releasing it unharmed.

New mobile library timetable offers more efficient service A new mobile library timetable is being rolled out by Bath & North East Somerset Council to improve the service in line with its Community Library Programme. The Council is enhancing its Library Service in response to feedback from local people about how the wide range of services available should be provided in the future. This includes retaining all of its existing library branches and introducing the Community Library Programme – in which residents can get involved in running libraries at community centres and village halls through local groups or organisations. The new timetable, which starts from 29 July 2013, has been developed to enable a fortnightly service to continue to all communities that require it. In villages with multiple stops the number of stops has been reduced and the mobile library will stay for longer at the remaining stops. Cllr David Dixon, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods said, “This new timetable has been developed in response to feedback from local people as we know that the mobile library service is highly valued. Therefore it will continue to play a big part in our library service offer to communities alongside Bath & North East Somerset Council’s eight branches and the new community libraries.

I am very pleased that the mobile library will still be visiting most of the communities in Bath and North East Somerset who currently use the service.” The following criteria were used to identify where mobile library stops were no longer needed: • Stops with no current readers • Stops where readers met the mobile library by driving to it • Stops near the new community libraries/ existing Council libraries • Stops which were difficult for the mobile library to access or park. Details of the new timetable for the mobile library are available via Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Library Service webpage or by calling Council Connect on 01225 394041.

HOLIDAY CLUBS Holiday play schemes can be run by the local council or privately, for the whole holiday, a week at a time or just a few days. Some play schemes concentrate on a particular sport or interest, e.g. football or drama, while others are a mixture of activities and even outings. They can be a life-saver if you work, but even if you’re at home too they can offer a break within the school holidays for your children - and you! Your child will have the opportunity to meet and form new friendships with similar aged local children. Holiday play schemes can be a great way for children to discover new interests and explore new activities and can be an energyburner. You can pre-book for the days that suit you, from just one or two days to whole weeks. Popular holiday schemes are booked up very early so you need to be quick off the mark and please do check with the scheme that it will be suitable for your child. Many of these schemes also run after school and weekend activities during term time and the Summer holidays are a great time to enrol your child into a club ready for September and the beginning of the new school year. Many sports clubs will be enrolling new students for September, so if your children would like to start a new activity, now is the perfect time to arrange this.

SUMMER

ARTS & CRAFTS TREASURE CHESTS

DECORATE YOUR SHOES

Here is a simple way for children to store their collections. Make an accordion fold in a strip of paper and glue the ďŹ rst and last pages to the inside of a boxes lid and bottom. Keep some pages empty so that the collection can grow.

Why not create your own fashion design on your shoes. Using fabric pens and fabric paint you can be the talk of the town with your funky shoes.

ROCK PAINTINGS

Decorating stones and rocks is a great way for children to show their creativity this Summer. Collect a series of stones of different shapes and sizes and decorate them with pens or paints. You can turn your stones into people, animals and even monsters.

OUT AND

ABOUT

Turn off the tv, lock up the PlayStation and have a great day out with the children. The Summer holidays are nearly here and it is a great time to spend some family time together and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the normal daily routine. Whenever school holiday time comes around, are you left asking the same question? Where can I take my children to experience a great family day out? So how can you make the most of the precious time you and your children get together? If you and your partner have arranged to take some time out of the office, you don’t want to waste it by doing chores while your children sit in front of the TV all day. Family fun, not family friction should be the order of the day. Spending time with your children is also an important aspect of childhood development and happiness.

There are plenty of things to do with children in the local area, whether you’re feeling flush, looking for cheap days out or - even better - a free family tourist attraction. We are lucky to have many fantastic places to visit on our doorstep and the coast is only an hour away. Taking your kids on an educational day out can give them and you some of the best fun there is. Choose wisely and they won’t even realise they’re learning whilst playing. There are lots of child-friendly, interactive museums and historical venues around designed to excite and engage your family. Toddlers and young children understand the world around them by touching, so make sure you’re going to a place where you won’t have to constantly say ‘no – don’t touch. Farms and zoos are a great way to engage kids of all ages and again you can make the trip educational for them. Why not make a list of which animals you definitely want to see. Then once you get there, see who the first person is to spot their favourite animal. It’s always good to make a game out of the experience. Another good game is getting your children to do impressions of each animal.

It’s important to make your children aware of what to expect from the animals. Kids have to approach animals carefully and understand animals can get upset if they’re not nice. Some animals may want to rest or to hide. Get as much information as you can before you go about the animals you are going to see. A day at the seaside is the ultimate summer day out and also free. There are loads of things you can do as a family. Why not play games like “Let’s Bury Dad”, Build a line of sandcastles, then see who can squash them the fastest, Make sand angels by lying in the sand and waving your arms backwards and forwards or dig a shallow water pool for perfect splashing.”

*Bring an emergency snack and drink for the kids. And possibly even yourself! *Don’t forget your road map, even the best navigators take a wrong turn sometimes! Whatever you do or wherever you go this Summer Holiday, make sure that it is fun and enjoyable for you all. This way you will have a fantastic and memorable family day

Whatever you decide to do, here is a checklist of things you may need to remember to make the day run as smoothly as possible: *If you’re headed for an outdoor attraction, don’t forget to leave your wellies, raincoats and brolly in the back of the car (just in case). You never can tell with the British weather! Or alternatively make sure you include some sunscreen, hats and sunglasses if the weather is behaving. *It’s handy to pack up a change of clothes for the kids (little accidents happen when you least expect them) and a packet of wet wipes can be a godsend!

CHOOSING A NURSERY Nearly one million children are looked after in day in the UK and this number continues to rise so you’re not on your own when it comes to choosing the right nursery & pre-school for your child. Where to start? It can be very overwhelming and mind boggling so don’t panic, to start with you can obtain a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Services, you can then start your research! Its very important to book a visit to the nursery’s or preschools that you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are. Some things you may wish to consider and check; Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you should enquire as to provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any? Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money!! Is the nursery registered with OFSTED and ask to see the latest OFSTED report? If you work outside of your local area, would it be beneficial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?

Think of drop off’s and pick up’s and how this fits with your daily routine Does the nursery provide all meals, if so what is it and where is it cooked? What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activities For babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies? Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep? Is there an outside play area so that children can spread their wings and enjoy the fresh air? Is the nursery entrance secure? Is there a settling in period? Will your child have a key worker? Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school that you and your little one are happy with you can then start to relax and look forward to watching your child flourish & grow amongst other children of the same age.....and more importantly you can start to get some sleep at night instead of worrying!

PETS R E N COR Holiday pet care

In the excitement of preparing for a holiday or weekend away, don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets. There are a number of options to ensure your pet is cared for when you are away. You can: Ask friends and family to look after them Have a pet-sitter Take them to a boarding establishment. If you plan to take them with you on holiday Always make sure that your chosen holiday destination has all the facilities necessary for your pet’s requirements. Check with your vet that your pet is healthy and safe to travel. If your pet requires medication make sure you take this with you. Always make sure that your pet is fully vaccinated, and has had up-to-date flea and worming treatments. Make sure your pet wears a collar with an identity tag with your name and holiday address and contact details on, so if they get lost you can be reunited as quickly as possible.

Top tips for caring for animals in summer Never leave animals in a car during warm weather. Don’t let your pet get sunburnt. Make sure that all pets have access to shade and a constant supply of fresh drinking water.

Check your pets for fleas, ticks and mites. Don’t over-exercise dogs in the heat. Keep indoor fish tanks out of direct sunlight and top up the water levels of ponds. Don’t leave pets alone at home when you go away on holiday. Be wildlife-friendly in the garden - take care when using a lawn-mower or strimmer and keep toxic pesticides out of the reach of animals. Pet owners need to avoid leaving animals in cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans during warm weather, as temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C (117°F) and this may result in death. Remember: Under the Animal Welfare Act pet owners have a legal duty to care for their animals, which includes preventing suffering. Penalties are a fine of up to £20,000 and/or up to six months in prison.

There when you need us Joe the Vet says coloured “Dogs with light ured fur, lo noses, or light co Check . nt can get sunbur ial pet ec sp r with your vet fo n” sunscree
