Owl & Kingfisher Classes - Down on The Farm.
Enterprising Children Cheese, Cheese Everywhere! Was the cry when Owl and Kingfisher Classes from Chew Stoke Church School, recently visited Lye Cross Farm at Redhill. The Children, who had never seen so much cheese – enjoyed a tour of the Lye Cross Cheddar warehouses at the as part of their Enterprise Week. The Children watched the cows being milked and researched the price of food for sale at the Alvis Family Farm Shop. Later in the week the Children set up their own restaurant in school where they designed, cooked, and presented meals to over 50 paying guests! And yes, there was cheese on the menu!

Loads More Fun at Playtime Thanks to a grant of nearly £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, the Children of Chew Stoke Church School have had their playtimes transformed with the Scrapstore Playpod concept. Out go samey old games of “tag” and In comes den building, sword fights and the wonderful world of a child’s imagination. The Scrapstore Playpod Scheme is a different approach to “play” whereby children play with a whole shed of safe scrap and transform the items into wonderful playthings. This scheme encourages children to be creative, problem solve, negotiate with their peers and results in children being more stimulated and ready to learn after playtimes, all without them realising! The Grant has paid for the retraining of the School ‘s Playleaders, a large storage area and the termly renewal of play scrap materials. The result is that the Children no longer amble out at playtimes but they now run to see what they can find to have fun with!
MacMillan coffee morning The Class 3 students (Year 5 & 6) of East Harptree Primary School hosted another very successful Coffee Morning raising money for MacMillan as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. They baked their own cakes with the help of the School Cooks and served refreshments to parents and other guests. Earlier that week, Key Stage 1 classes baked scones and hosted an Afternoon Tea Party. Together in total they raised a fantastic £220 towards this worthy cause.

Youngsters’ winning designs get safety message across Three artistic pupils from a primary school in Keynsham, Somerset, are revelling in prize-winning success after coming top of the class in a competition organised by leading local housebuilderhousebuilder Taylor Wimpey Bristol. Max (11), Daniel (7) and Honey (7), of Castle Primary School, were each awarded gift vouchers having completed a colouring challenge to highlight the hazards of playing on or near building sites. The competition was organised as part of a health and safety visit to the school by Taylor Wimpey Production Manager Pete Donnachie. During his visit, Pete conducted an interactive lesson with the trio and their classmates, showing them some of the equipment construction workers use to stay safe and warning of the many dangers building sites pose to children. The lesson was particularly apt for the Castle Primary youngsters with Taylor Wimpey’s The Meadowsdevelopment currently under construction close to their school.
“We had lots of fantastic designs from the pupils at Castle Primary School and we were really impressed with the time and effort all the children put into the competition,” Pete says. “It was a really difficult job to judge the best entries, but Max, Daniel and Honey were the ones that stood out for us. Their designs conveyed the serious message about the dangers of building sites in a way which we hope will help other children understand too.” There’s currently a selection of brand new three, four and five-bedroom homes available to reserve at The Meadows, with prices starting at £245,000. Further information is available by visiting the Sales and Information Centre, located off Park Road, Keynsham, and open daily from 11am until 5.30pm. Alternatively, the Sales Executive can be contacted on 0117 244 8214. Further information on Taylor Wimpey developments across the region is available by calling 01454 628484 or visiting www.taylorwimpey.co.uk.

Bath Rugby players launch the “Children’s Challenge” Bath Rugby has launched a new initiative to inspire more children in the local community to lead fitter, healthier and more active lifestyles. The Bath Rugby Children’s Challenge is a set of fitness challenges created by the players aimed at girls and boys, aged up to 15 years. Members of the squad have set targets for the children to reach and have also taken part in the challenges so that the children can benchmark their results against them. The challenge is part of a wider Bath Rugby initiative which sees the launch of a new Junior Membership Club. Mike Ford, Head Coach at Bath Rugby hopes to inspire as many as 10,000 children to get involved with the initiative in the first year and said “As a Club we are very much involved with the local community. While we rely on the fans supporting us on a match day we also like to give back and support the community either by fundraising or by lending a helping hand where needed. Children all over the UK need encouragement and outlets like this if we are to steer them away from a culture that revolves around the TV and the sofa! We see this initiative as a key part of Bath Rugby’s legacy to help inspire children in our local communities and that is why we have launched our Junior Membership Club. We are passionate about increasing our engagement with kids all over the region and helping them to be active.” Ford added “The players are very much behind the challenges and have chosen some nonrugby related ones to appeal to girls and boys of all ages and interests. The keepie-uppies one is my personal favourite, some of the players find this really hard and certainly need the practise.”
6
The Bath Rugby Children’s challenges are:• To sprint 50m as fast as Tom Biggs - set a time on the 50m sprint challenge • Hula Hoop longer than Dave Attwood • Do as many “keepie-uppies” with a rugby ball as Matt Banahan • Take the Kyle Eastmond quick feet challenge • Kick a ball between two cones like Tom Heathcote Participation in the Bath Rugby Children’s Challenge is free. Children should register online at www.bathrugby.com to become member of Bath Rugby’s new Junior Membership Club. The challenges will be set up on the Recreation Ground in the outfield at each home game throughout the season. Spot prizes will be awarded for effort and a leader board maintained throughout the season.
Thrilling community facts at the click of a mouse Local communities were today invited to find out more about the local area with a new online service run by Bath & North East Somerset Council. Thousands of stats are available at the click of a button to raise awareness and understanding on a wide range of issues. It is the single most comprehensive source of research, facts and figures about Bath and North East Somerset available. • Residents of Bath and North East Somerset are some of the happiest in the country? • 15% of residents rent their homes privately, 5% more than in 2001? • Rates of teenage pregnancy are the lowest in the South West? This new process is called Joint Strategic Needs Assessment and is a new requirement placed on Council’s by the government. Councillor Simon Allen (Lib-Dem, Radstock), Cabinet Member for Wellbeing said, “Good evidence should be at the heart of our decision making and we want to share what we know
about the local area. We hope it will be a useful resource for people applying for funding and trying to get things done in their local community. “However, we don’t know everything and it is particularly important that the voluntary organisations and local community groups tell us what they know because they often have the best understanding of what their community needs.” Dr Bruce Laurence, Director for Public Health, added, “This information is already being used by the Council, the local NHS and other agencies to understand local needs and design services that meet local challenges. By identifying priority groups or communities who are experiencing poor health and wellbeing we can design or re-design our services to reduce these inequalities.” To access this information, visit www.bathnes. gov.uk/jsna and if you have information the council should know, contact the Research team on research@bathnes.gov.uk Since the launch of Rugbytots in the Bristol area in the Spring of 2009, there has been a huge demand for places. Featured on CBeebies, we believe this is due to the excellent delivery of our classes from dedicated, enthusiastic and professional staff. Our fun programme has been designed to develop your child’s physical, psychological and social attributes, as well as gently encouraging rugby specific skills such as running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching, scoring a try and much more. We now have weekday and weekend classes for girls and boys for: 2 to 3½, 3½ to 5 and 5 to 7 year olds in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. We have classes in your area: • Downend Sports Centre • Page Community Centre, Staple Hill • Compton Martin Village Hall • Ubley Parish Hall For your FREE trial call Rob or Emma on 0845 313 3250 / 0780 300 1394 quoting ‘Hey’.

Christmas presents on a budget Christmas doesn’t have to be an expensive time of year. By setting yourself an affordable budget and sticking to it you’ll be able to start the New Year without mountains of unplanned debt. Use our tips to help you make the most of the money. Write a list - estimate the cost of each present and check that the total is within your budget. Stick to your list. Sounds simple, but it’s easy to get carried away when Christmas lights are twinkling and gifts are displayed to entice you to buy. Plan what to buy and when - some things are best paid for early to get the best deals, for example travel, and others best to leave until the last minute, such as stocking fillers. Compare prices of different retailers as well as internet and shop prices - they often differ. Price comparison websites can be useful but use more than one source to get a full range of price information. Search for discounts - you can find vouchers in magazines and voucher codes online. If there is space to enter a discount code, always search for one. Don’t be tempted - two-for-one, three-for-two, mix-and-match or other
or cancelling a gym or magazine membership which you’re not using. Try a clothes swap - instead of buying a new outfit, why not swap with friends or use an online swap agency? Sell unwanted goods - online auctions can be a good way of converting things you don’t need or use to cash (including last year’s unused Christmas presents!), but take care and use online auctions safely. enticing offers are there to tempt you. Check the original prices to make sure that they really are value for money. And only buy them if you really need them. Do you need insurance? Check your Christmas gifts are covered by your existing contents insurance policy. And think twice before buying any extended warranties - you may already be covered. And if you dare to leave your food shopping until Christmas Eve afternoon, there are bargains to be had! Cut back - see if you can find one or two areas where you can make savings, eg packed lunches for you or your children,
Think about swapping Christmas cards for online messages or e-cards. With the price of postage increasing on a regular basis, this could be a real money-saver and is also good for the environment. If you are getting benefits, did you know that you may be entitled to a Christmas bonus? And if you don’t currently get benefits, find out if you should be. See the Directgov website for more information. If you are planning to borrow to help pay for Christmas then make sure it is the best borrowing available to you. And only borrow what you can afford to pay back.
Getting to grips with eczema
Around one in five children suffers from the skin complaint and in 8 out of 10 cases, the condition occurs before they reach the age of five. Emollients - substances used for moisturising, washing and bathing that help soften and smooth the skin to keep it supple and moist - are recognised as the most important treatment for eczema.
However, the research shows that in practice, many parents are not using these treatments as effectively as they could. Almost half of mums only apply to the affected areas of their child’s skin, when medical guidance from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence recommends that treatments they should be applied to the whole body, even when the child’s skin appears clear. The survey also highlighted that many parents could be hampering the effect of these treatments by the way they apply them - 53 per cent rub creams and ointments into their child’s skin which can actually worsen the condition by irritating the skin. As a result of the findings, the National Eczema Society has teamed up with E45 to launch a new threestep treatment plan and online advice programme. Developed in line with NICE and NES guidance, the simple plan advises: 1: Apply emollient creams and ointments all over your child’s body
2-3 times a day 2: Use gentle strokes in the direction of the hair growth when applying emollients 3: Use soap substitutes and an emollient bath oil to cleanse your child’s skin To help parents get the most from the plan, E45 has also launched a free support programme at www.eczemaadvice.co.uk The new online resource offers advice for parents as soon as their child is diagnosed with eczema and gives those struggling to manage their child’s condition the help they need to improve treatment outcomes. The programme has already seen positive results with nine out of 10 parents saying they feel more in control of their child’s eczema since signing up and 81 per cent reporting an improvement in their child’s symptoms. The website gives parents the tools they need to monitor and check their child’s eczema symptoms along with easy access to advice leaflets, educational videos and testimonials.

LET’S PARTY!
One of the joys of having children is being able to create magic and fantasy for them, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces at the sight of something special. Birthday Parties are a great chance to bring some of that magic to a child, or to a group of children, and although it can be hard work the results and memories for the child make it more than worthwhile. The range of choice for Birthday Parties these days is staggering, and like everything else, it is hard to please all the people all the time - even the little people! However, it is worth remembering that it is the children you want to impress, not their parents!

Christmas Gifts Locally It is very important we support our high street traders by doing as much of our shopping as we possibly can locally. A lot of independent local traders and their businesses are beginning to die out, resulting in a large number of high street shops gradually closing down and being left boardedup. By shopping locally you can make a difference to the livelihood of the traders and to the landscape of your local high street or town.

The story of Santa... On the night before Christmas, all children will be tucked in their beds while “visions of presents dance in their heads.” When they awake they will check their stockings to see if Santa Claus has come. Santa Claus has become the most beloved Christmas tradition. The image of the jolly old elf flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeers and leaving toys and gifts for every child is known worldwide. The history of Santa Claus begins with a man called Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. Saint Nicholas was known for his charity and wisdom. Legends tell of him coming from a wealthy family and giving all his money to the poor. He also was said to posses magical powers. He died in 340 AD and was buried in Myra. Late in the 11th century religious soldiers from Italy took the remains of the saint back with them. They built a church in honour of him in the town of Bari, Italy. Soon Christian pilgrims from all over the world came to visit the church of Saint Nicholas. These pilgrims took the legend of Saint Nicholas back to their native lands. As the legend of Saint Nicholas spread it would take on the characteristics of each country. In Europe during the 12th century Saint Nicholas Day became a day of gift giving and charity. Germany, France and Holland celebrated December 6th as a religious day and gave gifts to their children and the poor. When the Dutch colonists traveled to America, they brought with them their Sinterklaas, an austere bishop who wore a red bishop costume and rode on a white horse. The American image of Sinterklaas would gradually evolve into that of a jolly old elf. He was first described as a plump and jolly old Dutchman. In 1823 Sinterklaas/Saint Nicholas’ metamorphosis continued with the publication of Clement Moore’s poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the night before Christmas...). In the 1860s cartoonist Thomas Nast drew pictures of a plump and kindly Santa Claus. This image was becoming ingrained in the minds of people. As time went on this image of Santa Claus travelled across the globe.

PETS R E N COR It’s the festive season again and we’re surrounded by Christmas music wherever we go, trees and bright baubles in the shops, and everyone seems to be a bit happier than they were last week. Everyone is looking for an amazingly wonderful and unusual gift which will make their child gleefully happy and this sometimes extends to animals being given as Christmas presents. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it becomes a bad thing when the purchase is made on a festive whim and little to none of the proper research is done into the proper care. Here is a handy guide to helping you decide if buying a pet for Christmas is the right thing for you, your child, and the pet. The first question you should ask yourself is this: Does my child really want a new pet? Buying a pet for a family member might seem like a wonderful thing to do, but do they really want the responsibility of caring for a new pet and, in the case of children especially, you may need to take over the duty of care if they lose interest. Things to Think About 1. Who will be looking after the animal? You? Your children? Can you trust your children to be dedicated enough to care for the animal for the rest of its life? 2. Will you happily take over the care duties if your children lose interest? Can you dedicate the time to give the animal essential daily love, cuddles and attention on top of feeding and cleaning care?
3. Where will you keep the animal? Indoors our outdoors? Do you have a suitable space set up? can you keep it safe from the dogs and cats in the house? Is it going to end up unloved in a hutch at the bottom of the garden? 4. Have you budgeted for medical attention should it be needed? Can you put a little money aside each month just in case? 5. Can you afford to feed your new pet? Have you researched the appropriate diet? Do you know where you’ll be buying your feed supplies from 6. Is anyone in your household allergic to pet hairs? If so, a fluffy pet might not be such a good idea! Fish or reptiles may be more appropriate. 8. What will you do if for some reason you can’t care for your pet anymore? Do you know of any local rescue centres who may be able to help? Remember, pets are for life – not just for Christmas. Please give it a lot of consideration before you make that Christmas purchase. Pets have needs and feelings too.
