BEDTIME STORIES Pyjamas, slippers, cuddly toys and of course onesies were the uniform of the day recently at Chew Stoke Church School to herald the start of the School’s annual book week. Children and staff all defied the wet weather and dressed in their best night wear to spend the day engrossed in books. Children’s books were on sale at the school to encourage the children to read, read and then read some more! Head of Literacy, Mrs Angela Hurford said “it was lovely to see the children so excited by books and long may it continue”. The day ended with the children being given hot chocolate by the School’s PTA as they listened to the last story of the day before going home to bed! ACADEMY OF TRINITY WORLD BOOK DAY The Academy of Trinity was transformed into a magical world of make believe this week. In true Trinity style ‘world book day’ was a special and memorable day for all. The children were greeted by the entire cast of Jack and the beanstalk who informed them that a magic beanstalk had landed in the playground. Every child in the school enjoyed climbing the beanstalk, many of whom got to the top of the 30 foot climbing wall. Children entered the giants kitchen where furniture, crockery and cutlery made the children feel very small. Each class cooked a giants dish linked to the story of Jack and the beanstalk and arts and craft activities included giant furniture design, making golden harps and eggs as well as puppets and masks. Children paraded in their beautiful imaginative costumes and a winner from each class won a £10 gift voucher. It was an inspirational day where children really were able to capture and embrace their love for books!
TREE CLIMBING On Thursday the 6th of March pupils at St Johns Midsomer Norton enjoyed a day exploring a number of different tree based and rope adventure activities. A play team from BANES came along with lots of good ideas for how to develop risk benefit play and the pupils amazed themselves by following an assault course whilst blindfolded, travelling along parallel ropes and climbing to the top of a very high tree. All had a fantastic time.

ST MARY’S OFSTED St Mary’s Primary School had an OFSTED inspection just before half term and we are delighted with the result. The report has just gone to parents and therefore we are able to share the report with you now: St Mary’s is a good school: ‘due to effective teaching and an imaginative curriculum’ ‘Pupils are enthusiastic learners and their good behaviour and positive attitudes contribute to the good progress made by each year group.’ ‘Pupils behaviour is good and pupils try their best in lessons.
Pupils are polite and well-mannered and show genuine concern and care for one another.’ Pupils state that there is no bullying in school. ‘Parents hold the school in high regard and are confident that their children are cherished, (one parent, reflecting the majority view, said, ‘I could not wish for a better school for my children.’) The executive Headteacher, Sue Jones, and deputy Headteacher, Cathie Lampert, work in close partnership and play a central role in the unrelenting drive to ensure all pupils do as well as they can.’ The report also states, ‘that the schools work to keep pupils safe and secure is outstanding. The school nursery, which also was assessed under the same inspection, was also praised. ‘In the Nursery and Reception class, staff quickly build warm relationships with the children.’ The whole team, including parents, pupils, staff and governors are extremely pleased that the report accurately reflects what a great place St Mary’s C of E Primary School is. On Friday, 7th March, the pupils celebrated with a disco and party held in the school hall run by Rocky’s Disco of Midsomer Norton. I hope you can include as much of this as possible. We are extremely proud of the whole school community and the fact that all we believe and want for the pupils at St Mary’s has been corroborated by OFSTED.

OUTSTANDING OFSTED
As part of a group looking at ways to build pupils selfesteem and emotional well-being, pupils at St Mary’s C of E Primary School went for a trek around the woods at Ammerdown. “That was my favourite day, EVER!” This was a quote from one of the pupils who visited Ammerdown that afternoon. Encouraging children to appreciate the natural world, appreciating the benefits of physical activity in the great outdoors and developing a sense of awe and wonder through using ALL their senses was the focus of the visit.

The team at High Littleton Church of England Primary School are delighted to announce that they have recently been inspected by Ofsted and have been judges to be an outstanding school. This judgement reflects the hard work and dedication of the children, staff, parents and governors over the past few years. Head Teacher Gareth Griffith says “We are committed to making sure every single one of our pupils is given the chance to fulfil their potential. Everyone here is thrilled that Ofsted has noted the excellent progress made by all of our pupils.” Highlights of the report include: Achievement “Pupils make outstanding progress in reading, writing and mathematics during their time at school, and their achievement has been high for the last four years. Achievement and attainment are exceptional in reading.” The Quality of Teaching “Teaching has been outstanding for several years. Teachers have high expectations of pupils and make learning interesting and exciting. KILMERSDON OFSTED Kilmersdon Church of England Primary School are celebrating following a successful OFSTED Report. The Inspection Team visited the school recently and awarded a Good rating in all four categories: achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management. Head teacher Beth Hopkin said, “We are delighted at this outcome as it reflects the hard work and commitment within the school from the staff, children, parents and governors.”
The inspectors met with teachers and governors, observed lessons and talked with the children. They commented on how keen the children were to learn and on the confidence with which they approached their lessons and wider school activities. They also looked closely at samples of all the children’s work in English and Mathematics and listened to groups of children read, concluding that the progress in all classes is good. Parents were invited to complete questionnaires on line and a number wrote personal letters to the inspectors to record their thanks for the support the school has given their children. Key points that arose from the report were: Achievement of pupils in all classes is good. Their wider achievements such as the ability to work in teams or to think about the needs of others are well supported…this means that pupils are prepared well for the next stage of their education. Staff, parents and carers are all very positive about the work of the school and all that it does for its pupils. There is a strong, shared commitment to see the school continue to develop. Credit was also given for recent initiatives within the school such as the Early Birds Club, Arts Week and the PTA who were providing funding and activities to broaden the children’s experiences such as developing the school’s Forest School site. Mrs Jenny Lamb, Chair of Governors, said “I am very proud of all the staff, governors and especially the children.”

The Major presented certificates and medals to all the finalists from the club’s annual gala held last November. He also presented Stacey, with her UKCC Level 2 Coaching certificate which she achieved with the help of a grant from Midsomer Norton Town Council. Georgia Boulton received the Junior Victor Ludorum and Liam Willcox won the senior award for the highest number of first places. Katie Ball was awarded the Endeavour Cup for her commitment to volunteering on poolside. Awards for the most improved times went to Elliot Lewis, Daniel Milverton, Hannah Brooks-Scully, Katie Boby, Jessica Pinches and Georgia Vause.
SCULPTURE PROJECT Teachers from Peasedown St John Primary School took a group of 11 of their most talented artists on a visit to the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath. They went to learn more about the Luna New Year (also known as Chinese New Year). While at the museum the children were able to look at lots of examples of East Asian art and especially horses in this art, as next year will be the Year of the Horse. Since the visit the children have been making and decorating a large horse sculpture which will be on display at the Assembly Rooms, Bath for the Luna New Year Extravaganza.

CHILDREN’S
ACTIVITIES
Activities for school-age children are not only after school, but can run at weekends and during holidays. Are you wondering how your child might benefit by taking part in a holiday club? This list is simply a starting point, but it certainly gives you reasons to investigate clubs or holiday sessions in your area for your children… Getting Out Many children spend a lot of time in front of the TV or playing computer games. Clubs can give children an opportunity to explore more varied and healthier activities. Meeting People and Making Friends Joining a club gives children a comfortable and appropriate place to meet others with similar interests. This environment can form the basis for lifelong friendships. Learning New Skills Children who participate in a variety of activities are introduced to new skills and are given a chance to develop them. As children realise they can do these things then their self-confidence grows. Developing Independence By participating in clubs, young children learn

to exist and thrive outside of their family. Older children learn skills and values that will carry them through to their adult lives. Leadership and Responsibility Children have the opportunity to make their own decisions – they learn to lead, follow and carry their portion of responsibility. Plain Old Fashioned Fun Playing a game, camping, singing - whatever the focus, children participate because they enjoy the activities and sometimes fun is as good a reason as any other to join a club.

NOSE MANUAL
Start at a moderate speed with your fee6t near the front and push the handle bars forward a bit and then lean forward. Try to balance like this as long as possible.
NO COMPLY
Start at a moderate speed and bend your knees, then take your back foot off the scooter and plant it on the ground. With your knees still bent, use the planted foot to boost yourself into the air. While in the air, bend your knees and put your foot back on the scooter, land and ride away. This trick is used for jumping higher and longer.
ROCK TO FAKIE
Ride up to a curb, rail, coping etc. and jay hop, try to land with the middle of the scooter on the curb and balance. When you are ready, lean back and bunny hop, if done correctly you should land safely riding backwards.
WHEELIE (OR MANUAL)
Ride at a moderate pace, move your feet to the back of the board. Keep your back foot on the board, lift pressure of your front foot and pull up on your handle bars. Lift the front wheel but keep the back on the ground.
STALL
Jayhop onto any edge such as a curb, park bench, rail or whatever. Balance as long as you can. Jahop back onto the ground.
BAR GRAB
Bunny hop off a ramp and while you are in the air, let go with one hand and grab the bar that connects the handle bars to the base, when you are done grab the handle bars again and land.
INDIAN AIR
Bunny hop or no comply off a ramp and cross your legs like an x and bring them up a bit, then put your feet back on and land.
TAIL TAP
Ride up to a ledge or curb, going straight at it. Bunny hop and turn 90 degrees. While you are in the air, put your back foot on the brake then land on the curb with only your back wheel on it and your front wheel in the air. Balance as long as you can and then, when you are ready, bunny hop off of the ledge/curb and turn 90 degrees in the air, land and ride away.
BUNNY HOP
Ride at a moderate pace, bend your knees, jump up and pull the board firmly against feet by pulling up on the handle bars. Land with your board straight or you’ll stack.
JAYHOP
Do a wheelie then attempt a bunny hop. What you want to do is kinda like a wheelie but both wheels leave the ground. The front wheel should be higher than the back wheel.

FARMS have grown in popularity in recent years, most probably because they are one of the few outlets that allow children to get up close to animals and to share in the experience of caring for them. Most farms actively encourage families to mix in with the animals, handle them and help with feeding - all of which can be huge fun for young children who’ve only really learnt about them from story books and songs. SEASIDE DAY trips to the beach are great fun and the children love the old traditions of building sand castles, paddling in the water and strolling along the promenade. Alternatively make a weekend of it and book a hotel or guest house for a night or two.You can find some great family-friendly options online. CASTLES & HISTORIC LOCATIONS Battles, princesses, forts, kings, lords or ladies, your child’s imagination will be fired with a visit to one of the magnificent castles and estate houses. There are many dotted all over the area and offer plenty of active role-play opportunities for children of all ages. Many offer Easter egg hunts and activity days. Educational days out/museums Lots of modern museums and educational centres have regular exhibitions and activities to appeal to children, making them a great destination for families. Children love to learn about dinosaurs and animals, science and the earth and an early appreciation and understanding of these topics will carry on through childhood.

Plan the day before. Shop for food, lay out clothes, pack a bag, charge mobiles…this way you can have a leisurely start, set off relaxed and arrive early before the crowds. PREPARE A PICNIC Even if there are restaurants and food for sale where you are going. There are often big queues for food, it’s usually expensive and is usually fast-food. Bring a change of clothes, sunhats, sun cream, plasters, insect bite cream.

CHECK OUT YOUR ROUTE Pack a map and print directions. Maybe bring a phone number for wherever you are headed in case you get lost. The children will be impatient to get there and the more preparation you can do, the easier the journey will be. MAKE THE JOURNEY part of the outing – lots of singing and fun and games in the car. CHECK if you can book and pay for your tickets in advance, either online or by phone. This way you can walk past the queues and straight in. RELAX, JOIN IN AND ENJOY YOURSELF We are so busy being responsible adults that we forget we can have fun too! See the day through the eyes of a child and wonder at the marvel of it all. Choose a special moment and use your senses to take in every detail: your child’s smile, the sounds of laughter, the warmth of the sun, the smell of summer: take a photo with your minds eye and imprint it in your memory. You’ll be able to revisit that moment in months and years to come.

THE ALPHABET GAME: Think of an easy category (like names, or places or animals) and then find a word for every letter of the alphabet. For example, if it was names, the first person might say Anna, the second Bill, and so on. WORD ASSOCIATION: Be as free as you like. The first person says apple, second person says banana, third person says monkey, etc.You can also play a version where you have to try and work back to the first word. SAUSAGES: One person has to answer people’s questions answering only with the word ‘sausages’. Everyone has to think of the silliest questions they can ask to try and make that person laugh or smile when they say it. If they do, they are no longer it, and the person who asked the question takes over.
THE PUB GAME: Look for pub signs and see how long it takes you to collect 5 heads, 10 arms and 20 legs. To do this, you simply count the number of legs and arms depicted on the pub sign, or in the name: ie, the Queen’s Head; the Phoenix and Falcon (4 legs) etc. THE NUMBER PLATE GAME: Look at the nearest number plate for the first group of three letters. The first letter is the initial of the person’s name; the second is where they come from, and the third is the job they do. THE NO ‘YESES’ OR ‘NOS’ GAME: You ask one person questions to which they can answer anything except yes or no. If they say yes or no they are out and it’s someone else’s turn. (What’s your name? Anna. Are you sure?)

Brushing for life
Dental hygiene is one of the most important life skills you can teach your child. It’s never too early to start getting them used to looking after their teeth - and the dividends will pay off in future. First or baby teeth have usually developed before your child is born and will start to come through at around six months. All 20 baby teeth should be through by the age of two. The first permanent
A very British addiction Forget cigarettes and alcohol there is a new addiction sweeping the nation - snackoholism. We were brought up being told not to eat between meals but now it seems that we literally can’t help helping ourselves, with Brits admitting to being addicted to snacking and finding it impossible to quit. And it seems our need to snack is taking over our lives as six per cent of us even admit to snacking in bed. A third of us would rather give up alcohol than snacks and 13% of smokers said they’d rather kick their nicotine habit than give up chocolate, biscuits and crisps.
adult molars appear at about six years of age, behind the baby teeth and before the first teeth start to fall out at about six or seven. The permanent adult teeth will then replace the baby versions. The lower front teeth are usually the first to go, followed by the upper front teeth. All permanent teeth should be in place by the age of 13, except the wisdom teeth which can arrive any time between 18 and 25. Cleaning your child’s teeth should be part of their daily hygiene routine. You may find it easier to stand or sit behind your child, cradling their chin in your hand so you can reach their
top and bottom teeth more easily. It is important to supervise your child’s brushing until they are at least seven - and make sure they spit out the toothpaste rather than swallow it. Make tooth brushing a routine preferably in the morning, and last thing before your child goes to bed. And remember to encourage your child, as praise often gets results!
10 steps to avoiding snacking: 1. Identify what - Keeping a food diary can help you identify your snacking reality. 2. Identify where - Once you know what your snacks are, you need to consider where you are most likely to snack - then clear out your snack stash. 3. Identify when - Knowing when you snack can reveal the trigger. When you’ve sussed out your snacking patterns, you’re ready to confront them. 4. Find a healthier alternative - Try a low calorie chocolate drink instead of chocolate or popcorn instead of crisps. 5. Distract yourself Occupy your mind with other things - go for a walk, phone a friend, get busy cleaning or ironing, read a book, take a bath, paint your nails etc to get your mind off those treats. 6. Avoid tricky situations - Take a packed lunch
to work to avoid the temptation of shops, and cut back on tea or coffee if you usually have biscuits too. 7. Cut the portions - You can make anything instantly healthier by cutting the portions - this way you get a little of what you fancy, just in a smaller package. 8. Fill up on fruit and veg Aim for at least 5 a day, so if you feel yourself reaching for a snack, make it fruits or vegetables instead. 9.Make small changes - If you deprive yourself of everything that you like and that is habitual, it’s much harder, and is likely to end in a cycle of deprivation and bingeing. 10. Don’t forget drinks - Whether it’s a fizzy drink, orange juice or the mid-morning caramel latte - they add up, so choose a healthier alternative like green tea or water.

Focus On Feet To Give Children Firm Start
A rising number of children are being referred to podiatrists and GPs with more serious foot problems than ever before. Retailers have reported seeing far more serious foot health problems including Hallux Valgus, Ankle Valgus, heel bumps and Plantar Fasciitis in children - conditions which are usually only seen in the elderly. A lot of the problems can be traced to ill-fitting, cheap fashionable
shoes and are likely to result in leg, knee, back and neck pain, as well as migraine. One of the most important yet most abused parts of the human body is the feet. Feet are designed to take body weight and give mobility essential to quality of life. Feet are often crammed into the most unsuitably shaped shoes - often made of plastic - and the only time they are given a thought is when they hurt. From birth to early teens, feet are at their most vulnerable; in fact there are 26 bones in the foot, and they do not stop growing until around the age of 18.

Shoe fitters and chiropodists spend the majority of their time trying to correct damage and ease discomfort which could have been avoided if shoes had been correctly fitted when purchased. Shoes should always be fitted by trained personnel as a fitting gauge plays only a small role in the selection of the correct shoe. Advice from the
SSF when choosing infant shoes is to pick those which are designed around the shape of the feet - slim at the heel and wide at the front because an infant’s foot is reasonably triangular in shape and consists mostly of gristle and cartilage. They should be firm and snug at the heel to cradle the foot and yet flexible at the front with an adjustable fastening. Materials should be natural - cotton and leather linings and leather uppers are porous and ensure that moisture is absorbed and allowed to escape, keeping the feet dry and avoiding irritating complaints such as Athletes Foot. Leather is also the only material to conform to the shape of the foot and stay there, thus making the best possible fit. This is why shoes should never be passed down to another child! Children aged four and upwards should have shoes checked every 10 to 12 weeks, and at the least every four months.

GARDENING
FOR KIDS
Now that Spring is here and the weather is getting better, why not venture outside and start some gardening with your child. Children are enthralled by planting and caring for their growing flowers over the weeks - even children that normally wouldn’t concentrate for more than a matter of minutes on other “jobs”, really focus on their gardening. Children love the excitement and anticipation of waiting for the seed to sprout and it’s the best way for them to learn how plants grow and what they need to survive; far better than reading about it in a book. Gardening has loads of other things going for it too! It’s a healthy, outdoor activity which will keep them away from slumping in front of their computer games and it’s something that you can plan and enjoy doing together. All the parenting experts tell us that, to bond happily with your children, you need to find an activity that you as adults enjoy as much as the children. However, If gardening really is not your cup of tea but your children have the urge to do it, then draft in support. Grandparents tend to have a liking for gardening and it’s something nice that they can do with their grandchildren. Kids have so much competing for their attention: television, computers, sports, and a gazillion “planned” activities from library hours to birthday parties, from sleepovers to dances.

So gardening has to stand on its own. Rooting cuttings in water doesn’t cut it. But what does? • Recognize that kids’ gardening priorities are different, well, practically opposite of adults’. • Start on a small scale - don’t be too ambitious and embark on a massive gardening project with your children. Better to keep it small and start with maybe potatoes in a bucket or sunflowers - these are especially enough for young children. • Keep them involved, ask loads of questions: What do we need to do next? Where is the best spot for these? What do the instructions say? Will that seed grow in that bucket of water etc. This way they feel they’re part of the job in hand. • Have you got an old sandpit in a corner of the garden or shed that is no longer used? It could be easily transformed into a child’s vegetable patch or kitchen garden. Just add holes to the bottom, layer with stones and then add soil. • If you’ve got an old wheelbarrow that’s on it’s last legs then fill it with compost and let the children loose with a mixed packet of the most colourful plants you can find. Wheel it to the sunny spot in your garden or patio and arm the children with water sprays and let nature take it’s course. • Leave room for good old-fashioned digging. Holes are a highly popular landscape feature. Look for worms. Add water, and frogs appear. • Grow plants to attract wildlife e.g. wildflowers and buddleia will attract bees and butterflies. These insects will then pollinate your flowers, which will help you get good crop of fruit and vegetables. • Take photos of the plants at different stages.... especially things like sunflowers. When you think about it, it’s amazing that a huge sunflower can grow from a small seed. • Model the message that some insects are beneficial, and even destructive bugs are highly interesting. • Do behind-the-scenes maintenance of kids’ gardens, keeping them edged and weeded. Don’t expect kids to do all the watering and pest patrol. • You decide: when it comes to impending doom (no pumpkins appeared on vines; the daisy is uprooted and sunning on the deck) do you add a pumpkin from the shop? Replace the daisy? Some parents use loss as a lesson; others smooth things over for success. Remember, one of the best things you ever grow may be a gardener.

TOP TIP:
The size of your rabbits’ home is very important, but what’s in their enclosure is also key to their welfare. An interesting environment gives your rabbits mental and physical stimulation, which means that they are more likely to remain fit, healthy and happy as a result. You’ll have fun too, spending time watching them exploring and enjoying themselves!
Owning and caring for rabbits can be great fun and very rewarding, but it’s a big responsibility and a long-term commitment in terms of care and cost. If you own or are responsible for rabbits, even on a temporary basis, you are required by law to care for them properly. Typically, rabbits live for 8-12 years, but some may live for longer. MAKE SURE YOUR RABBITS HAVE A SUITABLE PLACE TO LIVE Rabbits are active animals so they need to be able to hop, run, jump, dig, stand fully upright on their back legs, and stretch out fully when lying down. They need regular and frequent opportunities to exercise every day to stay fit and healthy, as well as an appropriate place to go to the toilet. Rabbits must be able to hide from things that scare them and they need to be able to hide in a secure place, away from the sight and smell of predators such as foxes, cats, dogs, ferrets and birds of prey. They are intelligent; if they are bored and do not have enough to do, rabbits may suffer –toys and activities are great to keep your rabbits occupied. MAKE SURE YOUR RABBIT HAS A HEALTHY DIET Rabbits are grazers and in the wild they eat only grass and other plants – in fact, your rabbits’ digestive systems must have hay and/or grass in order to function properly. Rabbits’ teeth grow continuously throughout their life and need to be worn down and kept at the correct length and shape by eating grass, hay and leafy green plants – if they don’t eat the right sorts of food they can suffer from serious dental disease. They produce two types of droppings – hard dry pellets, and softer moist pellets which they eat directly from their bottom and which are an essential part of their diet.Your rabbits need fresh clean drinking water at all times – without access to water they can become seriously ill. Check their water supply twice a day and make sure it doesn’t freeze if they live outdoors in winter. MAKE SURE YOUR RABBITS ARE ABLE TO BEHAVE NORMALLY Rabbits are highly social, playful and inquisitive animals and need to interact and play with other friendly rabbits. Many rabbits also enjoy interacting with people through gentle petting. The way a rabbit behaves will depend on his/her age, personality and past experiences but if one of your rabbits changes their behaviour, he/she could be distressed, bored, ill or injured. Rabbits that are frightened or in pain may change their behaviour or develop unwanted habits, such as aggression or hiding. Be observant. If your rabbit’s behaviour changes or they show regular signs of stress or fear, talk to your vet or a qualified animal behaviourist. Never shout at or punish your rabbits, they are very unlikely to understand and may become more nervous or scared. MAKE SURE YOUR RABBIT HAS APPRORIATE COMPANY Rabbits are naturally sociable and normally prefer to be with another rabbit. A rabbit left on his/her own can develop abnormal behaviour and may suffer if left without company and nothing to do for long periods of time. If you take the time to handle your rabbits regularly they will learn to see you as a friend and companion, so handle them gently every day from an early age. MAKE SURE YOUR RABBITS ARE PROTECTED FROM PAIN, SUFFERING, INJURY AND DISEASE Rabbits feel pain in the same way as other mammals, including people, but they are not very good at showing outward signs of pain and may be suffering a great deal before you notice anything is wrong. A change in the way a rabbit normally behaves can be an early sign he/she is ill or in pain. If a rabbit is not eating or is more quiet than usual, he/she is highly likely to be ill, or in pain, in which case you should talk to your vet immediately.
