Cub Scouts from 1st Midsomer Norton ‘C’ Pack learned about guide dog training at one of their recent meetings. They were visited by Pearl, a black labrador/retriever cross with her trainer Linda Hole from Paulton. The Cubs were able to try on different types of spectacles which simulate some of the more common sight disabilities, and they played some blindfold games. Mrs Hole then spoke to the youngsters about how she receives puppies when they are six and a half weeks old, teaches them to obey simple commands, and takes them to a variety of public places to experience traffic noise, supermarkets, restaurants, and even the workplace. When they are thirteen months old the dogs move on to a specialist training centre in Leamington Spa for a few weeks of intensive training before they are eventually ‘sold’ for a nominal amount to those with severe sight impairment. The cost of training each dog is £45,000. Mrs Hole has been training puppies for twenty-six years, and she told the cubs that Pearl was her best ever trainee, and she will be very sad when the times comes for her to move on. At the conclusion of the meeting eight year-old Che was invested as a new Cub. Anyone wishing to find out more about Scouting in Midsomer Norton should visit the website: www. nortonscouts.net

To gain the certificate schools need to submit a completed Biennial Audit Tool and a Children and Young People’s Review. The staff and children at Farrington Gurney are very proud of their award, well done to all.
Community Hub Paulton Library Community Hub opened at Hill Court on Monday 15 April. Bath & North East Somerset Council has been working on the project with Paulton Parish Council and local ward Councillors John Bull and Liz Hardman. The vision being that this facility will aid regeneration of the village’s shopping centre. The new Hub will provide the same range of services as the current library plus the additional benefits of a coffee bar, WiFi and a meeting room that anyone will be able to hire. The Hub will also provide the opportunity for a range of other organisations to deliver their services in an accessible, central village location. Keeping the new facility open for as many hours as possible will be an important part of the project. The old library was staffed for 14 hours a week but by using a combination of existing staff, selfservice machines and volunteer support the new Hub will be able to stay open for much longer. Opening hours are: Monday: 09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday: 09:30 - 18:00 Wednesday: 09:30 - 16:00 Thursday: 09:30 - 16:30 Friday: 09:30 - 16:30 Saturday: 09:30 – 12:30

High Littleton entered two performances into this year’s Dance Umbrella at The Forum in Bath. The Dance Umbrella is an annual event where children across B&NES dance to a range of different music. Class 4 “Class 4 danced to an edited version of the ‘Jellicle Ball’ from the musical CATS! We were all dressed in Cat costumes, with our faces painted. We crept about back stage and as the first few bars of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music started to play, I think we all felt tickling butterflies fluttering in our bellies. Once we had finished we heard voices saying “I want to do it again!” By Ayeisha, Nancy and Amber Class 5 “Class 5 danced to ‘Skyfall’ with the boys dressed as James Bond, in tuxedos and bow ties, and the girls as dancers with gold body paint and gold hair spray.’ We had a projection of James Bond on the stage and the boys startled the audience by coming up the aisles! We enjoyed it very much and this will definitely be something that we will always remember!” By Lillian

Partner School Day St. John’s Primary School celebrated our new link with our partner school in Zambia. We have been working hard for a long time to create a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership with a school in Zambia, and finally a link has been made with Makole Basic School in Mufulira! The children were very excited to hear the news in assembly and enjoyed looking at our new resources from Zambia. Each year group was asked to complete an activity about life in Midsomer Norton to send to over to our partner school. The children at Makole Basic School will then send their work about life in Zambia to us so we can look at the similarities and differences. We all love the thought of sharing work with children in a school 5000 miles away, and cannot wait to develop the partnership and learn about life and culture in Zambia.
Chicks at St John’s Primary school Children in the reception classes at St John’s CE VA School, Midsomer Norton, have been excited to learn about life cycles by hatching their own chicks. Seven Marsh Daisy chicks hatched, including two, very rare black chicks. Children have been busy taking care of them and measuring their rapid growth. They now have feathers and are beginning to fly! All of the chicks will be re-homed to local families so that children can continue to keep track of their progress.’
A letter from the Queen Children from 5b at St. John’s Primary School in Midsomer Norton wrote letters to the Queen. Each letter talked about the childrens lives in Midsomer Norton and also the Diamond Jubilee. The children received a fabulous letter from the Queen along with a pack of information about the royal family along with some beautiful photographs. Holly, Megan, Lewis, Jude, Louis, Conor, Adam, Joseph, Joe, Colwyn and Max show some of the pictures received.

Tag rugby Sam, Aisha, Stacy, Brogan, Cameron, Harry, Riley, TJ, Kieran and Robbie all took part in a tag rugby tournament on behalf of Westfield Primary School. They won every game except for one which was a draw against other schools in the County finals. They played at Millfield against all Somerset schools and in June they will be playing in Taunton representing Somerset and if they win that they go on to play at Twickenham. A huge well done to you all, you played superbly.
Purnells under 7’s The boys who play football for Purnell’s U7’s should be very proud of themselves this season, they have trained every week in the snow, wind, rain and more recently sunshine and have really become a strong team. Most of the boys in the team attend Paulton Infant School and are not just good team mates but are also great friends too and this has become very evident on the pitch. The team has now played three ‘friendly’ matches (they are not able to play in the league until next season) and have won all three games against Bath City & Chilcompton! The boys all work so well together and led by Glyn Young and Colin Green the sky is the limit for next season! Well done Purnells.

A new reception classroom for Welton School The reception children at Welton Primary School are very excited about their brand new classroom layout. Teacher Amanda Audritt worked very hard to create an environment for the children that inspire creativity and learning through play. The classroom is now divided in to 4 areas; these are the home area, the maths area, the water area and the reading and music corner. Children enjoy a superb outside space too. Each child brings their slippers to school and wear slippers all day to create a comfortable learning environment. Thanks go to Sarah Barter and Barclays Bank for helping to create this wonderful classroom area.
Visit to Bishop’s Palace Our school trip to the Bishop’s Palace was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed gazing at the glimmering pools and stunning architecture. We were given a variety of activities to do, including finding the Bishop’s dragon and dressing as peasants. We also got the look at the paintings of the Old Bishops. At the end of the day we threw rice paper, which we wrote wishes on, into the churning water to see our wishes comes true! By Tom Young and James Ross
Talented athlete scheme Year 6 pupils from local primary schools have been receiving high quality sports coaching at Writhlington Sports Centre after being selected from a Sports Assessment Day. Writhlington School runs six, free of charge, Talented Athlete Schemes in hockey, netball, football, rugby, tennis and cricket. The aim of the coaching is to bridge the gap in sports performance between Year 6 and Year 7 pupils. As well as coaching the pupils can take part in matches against community clubs or Writhlington’s own school sports teams. Through their coaching sessions pupils can link to community clubs where their talents can continue to be nurtured. Writhlington School is entering a new and exciting era for sports development by providing opportunities for sporting excellence for younger pupils. Talented athletes are now being identified and supported in primary schools and are having greater opportunity to develop into elite sportsmen and women.
BEACH BEAUTIFUL
As summer approaches and we all start to put our winter clothes away (at last) and look forward to summer days in the sunshine and holidays that seem to of taken an age to come around since they were booked, we also have the all important check list of health & beauty to look at so we can feel radiant in the summer sun. It can be hard to take time out for yourself when the week’s go by so fast with school runs, homework and after school clubs but by allowing yourself some time for a pamper will ensure you feel confident and glowing in your summer clothes.
Here are a few tips for getting yourself ready for summer: We would never recommend a crash diet but if you would like to lose a few pounds why not contact your local slimming consultant who can give you the best advice on how to shed any unwanted pounds. To firm up those wobbly bits visit a local gym or attend some fitness classes. Try waxing, electrolysis or laser hair removal for a longer lasting de-fuzzing! Having a tan always makes us feel slimmer and more radiant so try applying fake tan or visit a local beauty salon for a professional tan. Treat your self to a pedicure so that your feet look gorgeous in your fabulous summer footwear. Ex-foliate and your skin will be glossy or you could visit a beauty salon

A NEW CHALLENGE
Is your life go go go?? What with work, kids and everything else that life throws our way, it’s amazing during the daily grind we ever find a few moments of quiet time but it’s been known to happen. Why not grab the bull by the horns and take advantage of that small window of spare time you have and do something ‘for you’. Why not take up a new hobby or even learn something new. Just because you have a small bit of spare time on your hands doesn’t necessarily mean you have to spend it cleaning or slogging it out in the gym! Why not embrace the shabby chic/vintage revival which is sweeping the nation and learn how to make some fabulous things for your home and save yourself some money at the same time. You could learn how to sew and crochet, paint and make pottery. With your new found hobby you’ll be re-vamping your home with all of your amazing hard work. You could join a local club to fill that bit of spare time, not only will you be enjoying yourself but will also have the opportunity to make some new friends – a photography club, a dance class or why not join a singing group. Singing has some great benefits that most of us are probably unaware of; as you take deep breaths during singing more oxygen reaches the brain and makes you more alert plus using facial expressions improves the muscle tone in your face, throat, neck and jaw thereby promoting a youthful appearance!

N a t iona l It’s National Bike Week from the 15th June until 23rd June, it’s the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event. Bike Week encouraged over half a million people last year to join in events, re-think their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around. Bike Week is a yearly event to promote cycling and show how easily cycling can be part of everday life by encouraging ‘Everyday Cycling For Everyone’, Bike Week wants to give everyone, young and old, beginners to experts, the chance to discover all the benefits from cycling and use the bike to get from A to B. Cycling is the third most popular recreational activity in the UK and an estimated 3.1 million people ride a bike each month...are you one of them? If you are looking for somewhere to have a family bike ride then a great place to start would be to plan a route along our wonderful cycle paths in the local area. These shared-use paths are a great way to get around by bike and are great for a family ride. Don’t be put off if you have a baby or toddler in your brood as it doesn’t take much preparation to get them out on two wheels...all you need apart from your bike is a child bike seat or trailer and you’re good to go. The cycle path in our area is called Colliers Way and is part of route 24 of the National Cycle Network, this ride takes advantage of the sections of the Colliers Way that are currently built and combines these with quiet country lanes to produce an enjoyable ride for all the family...with some lovely family friendly pubs along the way.

ARTS & CRAFTS DAD PHOTO FRAME
MUG WARMER
You will need:
A5 card (we used A4 and cut in half) Stickers and any other embellishments you have Glue 3 Photographs
Instructions:
Draw two D’s and an A shape onto the card, and cut out. Use a small pair of scissors to cut out the inside of the letters, too (younger children will need adult help or supervision). Decorate your letters. We simply used stickers but you can use gems, ribbons, sequins, pompoms or anything else from your craft box. Glue a photo to the back of each letter so that it fills the aperture. Trim any overhanging bits of photo away. Layer the letters so they overlap slightly, spelling out the word “Dad”, and glue together. You could laminate the photo frame to make it last, or enclose the whole thing within a larger Perspex frame.
PHOTO COASTER
You will need:
Felt Fabric paint Self adhesive hook and eye fasteners Optional, fabric glue and any embellishments you like.
Instructions:
Measure your felt around your Dad’s favourite mug. Cut out a rectangle about ½ inch shorter than the mug and long enough to fit around the mug with an inch overlap. Shape the ends of the rectangle so it will fit through the handle. Decorate the felt with fabric paint and any other embellishments (the simpler you make it the easier to wash if you need to). When the glue and paint is dry, wrap around the mug and ask a friend to secure in place with the hook and eye fastener.
You will need:
Unwanted CD, CD-Rom or DVD, Large photo, PVA glue (white glue), Pens, Acrylic varnish (optional)
Instructions:
Print out a photo onto standard printer paper large enough to cover your disc. Glue the photo to the disc (the side with the picture or writing on) making sure the central image is in the centre of the disc. When dry trim to size and add a message with the pens. To seal, paint over the image and the edges with PVA glue and leave to dry. Repeat. If you wish you can make your coaster extra-hardwearing by using acrylic varnish rather than PVA glue.
SILHOUETTES
LOOSE CHANGE TRAY
You will need:
A profile photo (it will be cut out so printing on standard paper is fine) Glue stick A dark shade of card Backing card Picture frame
Instructions:
Cut a piece of backing card to fit your photo frame. Glue your photo to the dark card. Carefully cut around the face in the photo, shaping to a curved line around the neck. Glue the cut out face to the backing card, so that the photo is face down. Frame your picture.
SHIRT AND TIE CARD You will need:
Sheet of A4 card Small piece of brightly coloured card Scraps of coloured paper Glue
Instructions:
Fold the card in half, to make your ‘card’. With the fold on your left, cut a slit about 1inch long down the middle of the card. Fold the top edge of the card over on the diagonal, from the centre cut to the top corners, to make the collar. Cut a tie shape from the bright card and decorate it with scraps of coloured paper. Glue your tie to the centre of your card. If necessary, add a bit of glue to keep the collar in position.
Is Dad forever losing his keys? Why not make him a tray to put on the hall table so that he can empty his pockets when he arrives home? Dad will always be able to find his keys and his loose change.
You will need:
A polystyrene tray - the sort fruit or meat comes on. Make sure it has been cleaned well. Acrylic paints
Instructions:
Simply paint your tray however you like and leave to dry.

He really wants to eat the fresh white bread and peanut butter sandwich but he’s not the only one. A squirrel, a fox, a crow and a frog are just some of the other animals that also want to eat the delicious sandwich.

Ben’s Granny is totally boring and he dreads going to stay with her as he has to eat cabbage, play scrabble and she treats him like a baby.
After several accidents it gets gloopy, squishy, slimy and sluggy and the sandwich does not look as good as it did. Badger is still so desperate to have the sandwich but will he want to eat it if he does eventually gets his paws on it? Or will it just be too disgusting?
Stanley goes on an adventure and joins a fairground family where he meets Pancho Pirelli, the bluecaped madam who swims with piranhas. Stan delves in to the water and finally discovers who he can really be.
Whilst staying at his Granny’s house Ben discovers a tin which is full of jewellery which includes a huge diamond, the biggest Ben has ever seen...what is his Granny up to? Ever since Mike was a little monster he dreamt of being a Scarer and as everyone knows only to well that all the best Scarer’s come from Monsters University. During his first term at the University Mike’s plans of becoming the best Scarer are derailed when he crosses paths with Sulley who is a natural born Scarer. The pair are out of control as they become so competitive in trying to be the best, however this gets them kicked out of the University’s Scare Program and to make matters worse they realise they have to work together, along with a bunch of very odd monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.
Horible Histories–Series 4
This series looks at Henry VIII’s Cash in the Abbey, Stone Age geeks and also looks at a spooky Victorian railway. From the Awful Egyptians and Smashing Saxons to Vile Victorians and the Woeful Second World War, Horrible Histories brings all your favourites to life plus new sketches such as Historical Apprentice, Wonders of the Universe and Historical Dentist.
Strawberry Granita Granita is a bit like sorbet, but crunchier! It’s yummy and really easy to make. Makes 4 Ingredients 200g strawberries 15g maple syrup 10g rapeseed oil some berries to serve a few mint and/or basil leaves (optional) Method Take the stalks off the top of the strawberries. Then ask an adult to help you mix the strawberries, rapeseed oil and maple syrup together in a blender. Pour the mushy strawberry liquid into the container. Put the container in a freezer. Leave it in the freezer for 2 hours. After 2 hours, take the partly frozen liquid out of the freezer. Scrape it with a fork to make icy lumps – this will help to make it crunchier. Now put it back in the freezer and leave it for 24 hours. When you are ready to eat it, take the granita out of the freezer. Scrape the surface with a fork to take off some granita shavings. Put the shavings in a glass (or bowl) to serve. Decorate it with the berries, basil and mint if you have some.

PETS R E N COR I am the only reptile that has a shell, so that my body is protected and my shell is made up from 60 different bones that are all connected together. We are a cold blooded reptile which means that our blood is the same temperature as the surrounding air so if we live outside we hibernate over the winter. There are over 40 different species of tortoise and the easier species to look after are the Herman tortoise and the spurthighed tortoise. We all like to have good amounts of natural light and we like to go outside into the garden too. It is also important that we have access to shade as we can get very hot in the sunshine. We don’t drink lots but we like to always have clean water if we need it and we like to eat a range of wild plants such as dandelions, chicory, sow thistle, white clover and wild radish flowers. We enjoy grazing on safe garden plants and grass too. I am very happy when I am allowed to wander free in my owner’s garden. He has a wooden fence around the garden so I cannot get out and I am allowed to wander wherever I like. My owner puts a box full of hay in the corner of the garden for me and when the sun starts to go down I wander back to my box for the night. We are one of the oldest and most primitive groups of reptiles and we have outlived many other species.
