Radstock Cub’s silver award A Cub Scout from 1st Radstock Group has achieved the highest possible award for his age. Ten year-old Theo was presented with the Chief Scout’s Silver Award at a ceremony recently. Theo, who has been a member of scout group since he joined as a Beaver age 6, said, “The best thing about Cubs was going on the camps to get my Outdoor Challenge badge. I’m really, really looking forward to all the camps and outdoor adventure activities in Scouts.” The award was presented by Assistant District Commissioner Dave Turner who said, “Only a few Cubs complete all the challenges necessary to gain this award, and it represents a great achievement. We are all very proud of Theo.” Scouting in Radstock has seen sustained growth over the past six years. In common with other Scout Groups, it is run and managed by a team of trained volunteers, most of whom have families and full-time jobs. For more information about how to get involved in Scouting, visit the District website: www.wansdykescouts.org.uk

Salve Citizens! At St John’s School, as a finale of our Roman Topic we held a Roman Day in Year 4! This was planned by the children to involve a variety of Roman Themed activities that we have learnt about this term. These included; making Roman Tablets for writing out of clay, building a Roman Fort, designing Roman jewellery and making a Standard to be taken on our march of the settlement of St Johnius! Choir members taught us a Latin song that they had performed in a concert last year, and in PE we invented a Roman dance in the style of a Centurion march, which we will share with each other when they are completed. Everyone has really enjoyed dressing up…including the teachers! We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch of authentic Roman food which included bread and honey, grapes, olives and even marshmallows to look like flamingo brains as we didn’t fancy eating the real thing! Floreat nostra schola which means let our school flourish!

Creative arts
Creative Arts were on the agenda for the last week of term for the children in Kilmersdon Church of England VA Primary School. The children had the opportunity to work with local artists and created willow structures to enhance the outdoor learning areas – with a rather spectacular willow peacock being the centrepiece. All the children were involved in the arts, taking part in paper making, African bracelet making, composting and recycling workshops, working with wood, dancing, investigating techniques used by Van Gogh and workshops in story telling and creative writing with local authors. The children made a permanent display out of FIMO which centred around the nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill” – our school is supposedly situated on the exact hill! Models were made by the children of themselves (and a few teachers!), together with Jack and Jill and the surrounding fields and animals – right down to a bird in a nest in a tree. Every child in the school had the opportunity to take part which was funded in part by the PTA. It was an excellent way for the children to develop new skills, face new challenges and learn in a fun and different way.
Cookery Corner Thursday 17th October was a food festival at Peasedown St John Primary School during the Grand Opening of its new “Cookery Corner”. Celebrity Chef Paul Hartley, author of “The Marmite Cookbook” and many other great recipe books, came along to cut the ribbon and officially open the room. Representatives from the “Friends of Peasedown School” also presented brand new cooking equipment bought by them, so that all the children can experience learning how to cook. The room was named “Cookery Corner” by Abraham Callen, who won the competition to come up with a new name. Part of his prize was to spend the morning with Paul creating delicious food. Paul showed Abraham and members of Pupil Voice (the school council) how to create delicious breakfast wraps, with pastry bacon and eggs, as well as wholesome handmade hamburgers. They all then enjoyed devouring them – showing that healthy, homemade food is a big hit with children. Paul, who runs a restaurant and cookery school in Binegar, said “I am passionate about children and parents enjoying cooking and eating nutritious, homemade food. It is great to see how this school has developed this fantastic room to get everyone involved!” Headteacher, Julia Battersby, explained how the school was committed to putting food back on the menu “We realise that children need a healthy diet for them to achieve well not only in school but also in life. Healthy attitudes need to be fostered from a young age and we fully support a refocus on cooking in the curriculum. It is not only fun but an essential life skill.” Abe said “I think the new room looks great and my class are planning a Greek themed day soon so we can all do some more cooking.”
Eco team joy St. John’s Primary School’s Eco Team are celebrating their recent acquisition of the Silver Eco Schools Award. The Eco Team are taking on an increasingly important role in the school and are leading us all to become responsible for our environment and ensure that eco topics are being covered through our curriculum. They don’t plan on stopping now though; they are now aiming for the Green Flag Award.
International Schools Award Success Here at St. John’s Primary School we are delighted to have been reaccredited for the International Schools Award until 2016. Staff and pupils are pleased to have had all our hard work recognised as we continue to become responsible global citizens. We enjoyed a number of international activities last year and became thoroughly engaged in our learning. This year, we have plenty of events planned to provide more valuable experience for all our pupils and to keep a strong focus on the International Dimension at St. John’s.
Great Fire of London Our topic in Year 2 was The Great Fire of London. We really enjoyed learning about the historic event and the damage it caused. We made models of houses from the period. As part of our finale to the topic we asked a fireman to come in and help us safely burn the London we had made. We made a comparison between houses made of wood or mod rock, to observe which would burn fastest. As we expected, the wooden houses burnt really quickly and was part of the reason the Great Fire was so destructive. Calum, Year 2

Celebrating Ofsted
Governors, staff and pupils at Bishop Henderson Church of England Primary School are celebrating their recent Ofsted report. The school was inspected by Ofsted during the last week of the summer term, during the heat-wave, and the results were published in September. The governors are delighted to announce that the school was judged to be good in all four categories: achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety, and leadership and management. The Headteacher, Tonie Scott said, “We have been given lots of positive feedback in the report and are very proud of our school and all that we have achieved since the last inspection. We have a great school community with enthusiastic children, dedicated staff and very supportive parents and governors, which will enable us to keep going from strength to strength. The chair of governors, Carole Parr commented, “We have always known that it’s a good school and now its official!” The inspectors recognised many positive features of the school: The well-being of pupils is given the highest priority and the school is a welcoming, highly supportive and caring environment for pupils and their families. Children make good progress throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage and continue to do so in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. As a result, pupils’ achievement is good and has improved significantly since the last inspection.
Jacob Rees-Mogg visits Year 6 at St John’s On the 15th of November, Jacob Rees-Mogg, local MP for North East Somerset, visited St John’s Primary School and answered questions from the Year 6 pupils. It was a fantastic experience for all the children, many of whom had never met a member of parliament before. The questions ranged from democracy in China to cricket at Lords, and throughout the children were given a thoroughly good impression of the life of an MP. Mr Rees-Mogg commmented, “There were many budding Jeremy Paxmans tto write in room!” The children on tota’s base Gro their creative it San Viswent session on the experience and the understanding gained by Be entertained meeting this MP will stay with them for a long time.

Bath Rugby players launch the “Children’s Challenge”
I t ’s s at... ma Chr is t
Bath Rugby has launched a new initiative to inspire more children in the local community to lead fitter, healthier and more active lifestyles. The Bath Rugby Children’s Challenge is a set of fitness challenges created by the players aimed at girls and boys, aged up to 15 years. Members of the squad have set targets for the children to reach and have also taken part in the challenges so that the children can benchmark their results against them. The challenge is part of a wider Bath Rugby initiative which sees the launch of a new Junior Membership Club. Mike Ford, Head Coach at Bath Rugby hopes to inspire as many as 10,000 children to get involved with the initiative in the first year and said “As a Club we are very much involved with the local community. While we rely on the fans supporting us on a match day we also like to give back and support the community either by fundraising or by lending a helping hand where needed. Children all over the UK need encouragement and outlets like this if we are to steer them away from a culture that revolves around the TV and the sofa! We see this initiative as a key part of Bath Rugby’s legacy to help inspire children in our local communities and that is why we have launched our Junior Membership Club. We are passionate about increasing our engagement with kids all over the region and helping them to be active.” Ford added “The players are very much behind the challenges and have chosen some nonrugby related ones to appeal to girls and boys of all ages and interests. The keepie-uppies one is my personal favourite, some of the players find this really hard and certainly need the practise.” The Bath Rugby Children’s challenges are:• To sprint 50m as fast as Tom Biggs - set a time on the 50 m sprint challenge • Hula Hoop longer than Dave Attwood • Do as many “keepie-uppies” with a rugby ball as Matt Banahan • Take the Kyle Eastmond quick feet challenge • Kick a ball between two cones like Tom Heathcote Participation in the Bath Rugby Children’s Challenge is free. Children should register online at www.bathrugby.com to become member of Bath Rugby’s new Junior Membership Club. The challenges will be set up on the Recreation Ground in the outfield at each home game throughout the season. Spot prizes will be awarded for effort and a leader board maintained throughout the season.

Christmas presents on a budget Christmas doesn’t have to be an expensive time of year. By setting yourself an affordable budget and sticking to it you’ll be able to start the New Year without mountains of unplanned debt. Use our tips to help you make the most of the money. Write a list - estimate the cost of each present and check that the total is within your budget. Stick to your list. Sounds simple, but it’s easy to get carried away when Christmas lights are twinkling and gifts are displayed to entice you to buy. Plan what to buy and when - some things are best paid for early to get the best deals, for example travel, and others best to leave until the last minute, such as stocking fillers. Compare prices of different retailers as well as internet and shop prices - they often differ. Price comparison websites can be useful but use more than one source to get a full range of price information. Search for discounts - you can find vouchers in magazines and voucher codes online. If there is space to enter a discount code, always search for one. Don’t be tempted - two-for-one, three-for-two, mix-and-match or other
or cancelling a gym or magazine membership which you’re not using. Try a clothes swap - instead of buying a new outfit, why not swap with friends or use an online swap agency? Sell unwanted goods - online auctions can be a good way of converting things you don’t need or use to cash (including last year’s unused Christmas presents!), but take care and use online auctions safely. enticing offers are there to tempt you. Check the original prices to make sure that they really are value for money. And only buy them if you really need them. Do you need insurance? Check your Christmas gifts are covered by your existing contents insurance policy. And think twice before buying any extended warranties - you may already be covered. And if you dare to leave your food shopping until Christmas Eve afternoon, there are bargains to be had! Cut back - see if you can find one or two areas where you can make savings, eg packed lunches for you or your children,
Think about swapping Christmas cards for online messages or e-cards. With the price of postage increasing on a regular basis, this could be a real money-saver and is also good for the environment. If you are getting benefits, did you know that you may be entitled to a Christmas bonus? And if you don’t currently get benefits, find out if you should be. See the Directgov website for more information. If you are planning to borrow to help pay for Christmas then make sure it is the best borrowing available to you. And only borrow what you can afford to pay back.
Getting to grips with eczema
Around one in five children suffers from the skin complaint and in 8 out of 10 cases, the condition occurs before they reach the age of five. Emollients - substances used for moisturising, washing and bathing that help soften and smooth the skin to keep it supple and moist - are recognised as the most important treatment for eczema.
However, the research shows that in practice, many parents are not using these treatments as effectively as they could. Almost half of mums only apply to the affected areas of their child’s skin, when medical guidance from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence recommends that treatments they should be applied to the whole body, even when the child’s skin appears clear. The survey also highlighted that many parents could be hampering the effect of these treatments by the way they apply them - 53 per cent rub creams and ointments into their child’s skin which can actually worsen the condition by irritating the skin. As a result of the findings, the National Eczema Society has teamed up with E45 to launch a new threestep treatment plan and online advice programme. Developed in line with NICE and NES guidance, the simple plan advises: 1: Apply emollient creams and ointments all over your child’s body
2-3 times a day 2: Use gentle strokes in the direction of the hair growth when applying emollients 3: Use soap substitutes and an emollient bath oil to cleanse your child’s skin To help parents get the most from the plan, E45 has also launched a free support programme at www.eczemaadvice.co.uk The new online resource offers advice for parents as soon as their child is diagnosed with eczema and gives those struggling to manage their child’s condition the help they need to improve treatment outcomes. The programme has already seen positive results with nine out of 10 parents saying they feel more in control of their child’s eczema since signing up and 81 per cent reporting an improvement in their child’s symptoms. The website gives parents the tools they need to monitor and check their child’s eczema symptoms along with easy access to advice leaflets, educational videos and testimonials.

LET’S PARTY!
One of the joys of having children is being able to create magic and fantasy for them, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces at the sight of something special. Birthday Parties are a great chance to bring some of that magic to a child, or to a group of children, and although it can be hard work the results and memories for the child make it more than worthwhile. The range of choice for Birthday Parties these days is staggering, and like everything else, it is hard to please all the people all the time - even the little people! However, it is worth remembering that it is the children you want to impress, not their parents!

Spend your money and your time wisely. If money is tight, make the things you can yourself and only spend on the things you can’t. Even if you have a reasonable budget you don’t need to go over-board - it is better to do a few things very well than try and do too much and end up in a muddle!

NEW YEAR NEW Y U Christmas is nearly here and it’s time to get out your party clothes and enjoy the festive season. You’ve spent the last few weeks Christmas shopping for presents and what seems to be enough food to feed the five thousand. You’ve lost count of the number of presents you’ve wrapped and cards that you’ve written. You’ve been making costumes for nativity plays and been a taxi service for the children. You’ve been tangled up in Christmas lights and decorated the house to look like a Winter wonderland...it’s now time for you to enjoy the festive season and do something for yourself. New Year’s Eve creeps up on all of us and before we know it we are celebrating the start of yet another year. We contemplate where the last year has disappeared and discuss our New Year’s resolutions, even though the majority of us have forgotten our resolutions from the previous year...but not this year...2014 is going to be the year you stick to yours. It’s a brand new year so why not make it a brand new you to match. Around 7 million people in the UK make New Year’s resolutions to improve their health, but sticking to it in the dark winter months

can be particularly tough. However it’s worth remembering that just 15 minutes of exercise a day can increase life expectancy by up to 3 years! Exercise doesn’t have to be something that you dread each week and to ensure that you stick to your New Year’s resolution of exercising more make sure that you find something that you love and that you find fun. If you’re looking to start running why not set yourself a goal, maybe it’s a sponsored run or even a half marathon by the end of the year! Exercise classes can also be a great way to get fit, make friends and have fun. There are so many exercise classes that you could try from Yoga and Pilates that help develop core strength and tone the body to Zumba and high impact aerobics that will really get you burning calories and toning all at the same time as shaking your stuff! Aerobic classes have some great health benefits: However, running, aerobic classes or joining a gym might not be for you, you may not have the time or it might just simply not be your cup of tea. But all is not lost there are some other simple changes that you can make to help develop the new healthy you: If you are thinking about dieting you should always consult with your GP before starting. If you have decided a diet is one of your New Year’s resolutions you could join a slimming club where you will be able to meet new people who are also experiencing the same challenge as you. A slimming club is a great way to ensure that you are following a healthy eating plan and at the same time you can share you successes and even your bad days with people who understand. Many slimming groups offer generous eating plans making slimming easier, which is good news if you have enjoyed numerous mince pies, chocolates and turkey curries over Christmas and are worried about being on a strict regime. With professional support and encouragement you will certainly shift those excess pounds.

Christmas G It is very important we support our high street traders by doing as much of our shopping as we possibly can locally. A lot of independent local traders and their businesses are beginning to die out, resulting in a large number of high street shops gradually closing down and being left boarded-up. By shopping locally you can make a difference to the livelihood of the traders and to the landscape of your local high street or town. Shopping locally is one of the best ways to build a stronger, more prosperous community. There are many reasons to support local, independent businesses in your community, including: 1. Protect Local Characters and Prosperity Your Community is unlike any other place in the world. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain local diversity and distinctive culture. 2. Community Well-Being Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and by contributing more to local causes. 3. Local Decision Making Local ownership means that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions. 4. Keeping £ in the Local Economy

Gifts Locally Pounds spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as pounds spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more services through investment in neighborhood improvements and promoting community development. 5. Job and Wages Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits. 6. Public Benefits and Costs Local stores in town centres require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services. 7. Environmental Sustainability Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centres-which in turn are essential to reducing vehicle use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution. 8. Competition A marketplace of hundreds or thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 9. Product Diversity A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

PETS R E N R CO It’s the festive season again and we’re surrounded by Christmas music wherever we go, trees and bright baubles in the shops, and everyone seems to be a bit happier than they were last week. Everyone is looking for an amazingly wonderful and unusual gift which will make their child gleefully happy and this sometimes extends to animals being given as Christmas presents. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it becomes a bad thing when the purchase is made on a festive whim and little to none of the proper research is done into the proper care. Here is a handy guide to helping you decide if buying a pet for Christmas is the right thing for you, your child, and the pet. The first question you should ask yourself is this: Does my child really want a new pet? Buying a pet for a family member might seem like a wonderful thing to do, but do they really want the responsibility of caring for a new pet and, in the case of children especially, you may need to take over the duty of care if they lose interest. Things to Think About 1. Who will be looking after the animal? You? Your children? Can you trust your children to be dedicated enough to care for the animal for the rest of its life? 2. Will you happily take over the care duties if your children lose interest? Can you dedicate the time to give the animal essential daily love, cuddles and attention on top of feeding and cleaning care? 3. Where will you keep the animal? Indoors our outdoors? Do you have a suitable space set up? can you keep it safe from the dogs and cats in the house? Is it going to end up unloved in a hutch at the bottom of the garden? 4. Have you budgeted for medical attention should it be needed? Can you put a little money aside each month just in case? 5. Can you afford to feed your new pet? Have you researched the appropriate diet? Do you know where you’ll be buying your feed supplies from 6. Is anyone in your household allergic to pet hairs? If so, a fluffy pet might not be such a good idea! Fish or reptiles may be more appropriate. 8. What will you do if for some reason you can’t care for your pet anymore? Do you know of any local rescue centres who may be able to help?
Remember, pets are for life – not just for Christmas. Please give it a lot of consideration before you make that Christmas purchase. Pets have needs and feelings too.
