Budding artists show their work Coxley Primary School recently organised its own art gallery as part of their art project. Head teacher, Jane Hesketh-Williams said: “The art gallery was at the end of our ‘Picture This’ project. All the canvases were donated by parents Mr & Mrs Ball. Richard Horsham, from Crispin School in Street, also helped, working with a small group of children who turned out to be talented artists! The gallery has raised more than £90 so far and there are still some paintings to sell. The money will help towards other curriculum projects in the school.”

Aviva Tag Festival

Kenya exchange

Castle Cary RFC gave Bath Rugby the use of their superb facilities to hold an Aviva Tag Festival on the 27th March. The festival, which forms an important part of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme brought together over 150 children aged 8/9 and gave them the perfect opportunity to implement their newly-acquired skills in an engaging and fun environment. Steve Middleton, Community Rugby Manager said: “All the kids played their hearts out today on what had to be the warmest day of the year! I was seriously impressed with their skill levels. Kim Eaton, teacher at Horrington Primary School, Wells had brought some children to take part in the festival and said: “The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme has been wonderfully crafted and also crucially ensures that teachers receive quality coaching to help these youngsters reach their potential.” Schools taking part were: Horrington Primary Upton Noble Primary Wookey Primary St Josephs and St Teresa Primary St Pauls Primary

Coxley School is a very active participant in the exchange programme set up between a cluster of schools here and in the Kisumu area of the south west of Kenya. Mr Josephat Otiende, Headteacher at Gilwadzi Primary School, was able to observe and discuss teaching practices here and to work with children on the joint projects which have been established. They have focused on water sustainability and developing a ‘keyhole garden’ and there are plans for a water clock and weather station in the future. Mrs Sandra Dyger who leads the school’s gardening activities said: “The children here have been very keen to learn about growing their own food as the children do in Kenya.” As part of the programme of activities, Year 6 pupils also took part in a schools’ Conference hosted by Crispin School in Street, where they joined in toy making, drumming, art and cooking workshops led by Kenyan teachers and students. Celebrations of the partnership included an invitation to parents and friends to join pupils for a Kenyan-style lunch, cooked outside in the spring sunshine.

School football comp Ditcheat Primary School won the local schools football competition recently which was played at Ansford, their local secondary school. Ditcheat won all their matches against all the seven feeder schools who were there. The success story continued as their team then went on to play against other schools in the district which overall they won. They progressed into county level at Bridgwater and also won that. Last week the team went to the Cadbury Club for the South West Region, again coming through the winners, they have now been entered into the National Football Schools at Watford’s training ground in Coxley Heath on May 19th. So well done to team players (top left to right) Bradley Ryder, Thomas Creed, Luke Mascall, Thomas Christensen, (bottom) Toby Maguire. Ollie Johnston, Kai Raghunath and Josh Christensen. A very proud bunch as indeed we are at Ditcheat school! Good luck at Watford in May.

ICT developments Laura Blackmore from Meare Village Primary School says “We are delighted that work has been completed on our new ICT area named ‘The Hub’, it has a very modern feel with new furniture, bright colours and inspiring quotes on the walls. We have a film making suite as well as new laptops and nine ipads to support our learning. All the work was completed with the help of local sponsors and grants.”

Easter activities The children at Ditcheat Primary school enjoyed taking part in their Easter activities. They started with a church service about the meaning of Easter then spend the rest of the morning doing art and craft activities. They have 6 colour teams in school and they were split into 3 colour teams and each did an activity then they swapped over. They made Easter chicks, bunnies and even boiled egg holders. The children had a fabulous day.

Ditcheat nursery The children at Ditcheat Nursery meet in the school hall every Thursday afternoon, they have lots of fun and even join the reception class for stories at the end of the summer. Miss Dixon runs the group that has proved to be very successful.

Brighten up Spring The children at Hindhayes School recently planted a flowerbed opposite the Street’s Self Help Centre. The flower bed looks fabulous and brightens the day of everyone passing it. Well done to everyone involved.

House matches The children at St Paul’s Primary school in Shepton Mallet take part in house matches every year. This year the children played football and netball in their house teams. The houses are Darwin, Newton, Faraday and Brunel. All of the children enjoyed the event and congratulated the winners.

Edith’s wartime scrapbook The children in Class 4 at Ashcott Primary School put on an amazing performance of ‘Edith’s Wartime Scrapbook’ last week. The play was based on the Second World War and formed a part of the children’s topic work this term. There were three performances in all, one for the school children, one for members of the local community as well as an evening performance for parents and families. Retired members of the local community were invited into school for a special performance in the afternoon, followed by tea and cakes served by the children. The afternoon finished with a sing-along with the choir singing wartime favourites – and lots of audience participation! Praise for the children’s performance has been overwhelming, with the audiences commenting on the professionalism of the acting and singing as well as the emotional impact of the story (particularly for those members of the audience who lived through the War). Comments from the community included: “Brought back memories, absolutely brilliant” – Roz Dommett “What a group of stars!” – Jean Bagg “I really enjoyed it, a wonderful show, very emotional” – Joan Hale The school would like to say a big thank you to all of those involved in helping to put on the performance, including all of those parents who helped with making cakes, learning lines and making costumes. Thank you in particular to Mrs Woodward and Mrs Amesbury for their help with costumes; to Mrs Speakman and Mrs Jones for their help with rehearsals and refreshments; to class teacher Ms Catcheside, of course, for all her efforts with rehearsals and organisation; and finally to Mr Moore, for his professionalism and commitment in getting the children to feel so confident on stage and perform to the best of their ability. Well done everyone! Richard Briar, Headteacher

Garden Games Simple Treasure Hunt This is perfect for very young children and, although it can be played indoors, is best in the garden. It is an excellent game to play when the children are beginning to get restless towards the end of the party, and will mean that the children find their own presents for a party bag. Age: 3+ Preparation: Collect a large number of little treasures suitable for hiding around the house or garden. You could use toy soldiers or animals. Cellophane wrapped sweets or lollipops are excellent. Toys from fast-food stores can be saved and recycled. Pieces of Lego or other small toy characters may be appropriate. You can also buy bulk packs of party gifts such as bracelets, tooters etc. Use your imagination and start collecting early! Hide the treasure carefully. Some should be very easy to see; some can be hidden more seriously and don’t forget to put some little things at eye level too. Any edible treasure should be easy to find so that it doesn’t linger in the garden. Older children love to help you hide the treasure. Gather the children together, give each child a loot bag and an indication of what sort of treasure they may find, and tell them where to start hunting!

The Splash Game Not for the faint-hearted, this game is best played out of doors when clothes don’t really matter! It works with mixed family age-groups. Age: 6+ You will need: Small cards with numbers written on them, from 1 to x, x being the total number of players. For 10 players, you need the numbers 1-10; for 14 players, the numbers 1 to 14, and so on. Put the cards in a hat or bag. A small container for water. Choose an appropriate size for the age of your players, the location, the weather etc. A small plastic tumbler usually works well. A large container of warm water, such as a bucket or baby bath. How to play: Choose one player to start. He picks a number out of the bag without letting anyone else (but you) see it, and remembers that number. He then fills up the small container with warm water and stands in the centre of the other players, who form a circle around him, but not too close. You will have to establish the correct distance! The player in the centre faces each player in turn. Each player chooses - and says loudly - a number between 1 and x. Each player must choose a different number. As soon as somebody chooses x, the child in the centre throws the container of water at them! No matter how often this is done, it still comes as a bit of a shock and children love it. If you get all around the circle and all the players have chosen a number but NOT the correct one, the child in the centre has to throw the water over himself!

Games for...

Car Journeys Fingers Out This is a simple guessing game for which you just need two kids! Great for passing the odd waiting moment or car journey.

Age: Any

The children face each other and count to 3. On ‘3’ they put out one hand - either as a fist or with 1, 2 or 3 fingers extended, shouting out at the same time a number between 1 and 6. Add up the number of fingers extended. If a child guessed the exact number of fingers shown they score 2 points. If they guessed nearest the number of fingers shown, they score 1 point. If there is a tie, no points are scored. The first to a given number or points perhaps 5 or 10 - wins.

The next player repeats the sentence and adds something beginning with ‘b’, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple and a banana”. The next player adds a word beginning with ‘c’: “I packed my suitcase with an apple, a banana and a canary.” Play continues until someone can’t remember the list or makes a mistake. We have regular activities on for children, including story telling in the summer house and our explorer tracker packs, available all year round, which give children the chance to discover the wonders of the garden. This summer we have some great events lined up, from children’s outdoor theatre in June to our summer trail in July. We’re open whatever the weather, so if you want to play in the sun or splash about in your wellies, there’s always something to do at Prior Park.

Please check our website for events at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/prior-park

Diamond Jubilee Collage Even the youngest children can enjoy having a go at creating a Diamond Jubilee collage using symbols to represent Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne. We started by drawing the number 60 in gold pen on an A3 sheet of construction paper. The boys were then given a selection of crafty bits and pieces from which to choose. For a more complex collage you might to include photos of the Royal Family, palaces or state coaches, royal symbols such as crowns, sceptres, and even a corgi or two! You could also add Union Jacks and Commonwealth flags.

The Snorgh and the Sailor By Will Buckingham, 5+

The Secret Lake

Snorghs don’t share their soup, they don’t have visitors and they definitely don’t like adventures. However, when a bedraggled sailor turns up on his doorstep telling him stories of exotic lands, the Snorgh finds himself going on an adventure after all. This witty and touching story, packed full of emotion, tells how a lonely old creature is transformed by an unlikely friendship and the discovery that we can do the most amazing things, if we dare to.

By Karen Inglis, 7+ Stella and Tom, her younger brother, have moved to their new home in London. It’s not long before they become intrigued with their elderly neighbour’s dog Harry as he keeps disappearing and then returning wetthrough. Where does he go? The two children, over their summer holidays, embark upon a quest to solve this mystery. They soon discover a boat that has been buried and a tunnel that leads them to a secret lake. But who is the terrified boy rowing towards them and whose are those children’s voices coming from beyond the woods? Stella and Tom discover that they have travelled back in time to their house and gardens as they were one hundred years earlier. As the story unfolds, Stella and Tom uncover some startling connections between the past and the present.

The Emerald Atlas: The Books of Beginning By John Stephens, 9+ One frozen night, when the world was covered with a blanket of snow, Kate, Michael and Emma were taken from their beds. Ever since that night, Kate has been haunted by the silhouette of a tall, thin man. Ten years later, after spending time in a number of miserable orphanages and the memories of their parents now a blur, the children arrive at Cambridge Falls. However there is something strange about this place, Kate is sure she has seen the dark, crooked house before. As the children start to explore the house they discover an old, empty leather book. Upon touching the book an ancient magical prophecy is set in motion. This is a fantastic magical adventure story. The first thrilling book in the most exciting children’s fantasy series since Harry Potter!

FATHER’S DAY Sunday 17th June

Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday of June. It is a day to honor fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link between the two. The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day.
