The importance of a good breakfast If you’re a parent you’ll know how difficult it can be to get children to eat breakfast in the morning. Whether it’s because there’s no time or the children simply aren’t hungry, the fact is 1 in 6 children unfortunately miss breakfast everyday. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it provides you with the engery, vitamins and minerals to fuel your day. A good breakfast sets you up for the day ahead, providing energy and essential vitamins and minerals to fuel your body after a night’s sleep. The government, nutritionists and the Food Standards Agency all agree on this. But in Britain today an alarming number of people still choose to skip breakfast. Scientific studies show if you skip your morning meal you, and in particular children, are statistically more likely to snack on high calorie, high fat foods mid-morning. What’s more, if you don’t eat breakfast scientists say you are unlikely to make up the nutrients missed through others meals of the day. What really concerns us though is the number of children who start the day hungry. Our research tells us everyday in Britain 190,000 children don’t eat breakfast before they leave for school. So, give your children the best start to the day with a healthy breakfast.

New generation skills
Danny Grewcock teamed up with Premiership Rugby sponsors Aviva and visited pupils at Horrington Primary as part of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme. The Bath Rugby Academy Director put the youngsters through their paces as he led a wide range of rugby activities to help the youngsters continue their tag rugby education. The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme represents a significant investment (£2 million) by Aviva into the grass roots level of the game and designed to unearth the next generation of rugby stars. Resources will go towards supporting over 1,200 teachers in 650 schools across the country whilst also providing all the kit necessary to play tag rugby. Horrington is one of just a handful of schools in the country to receive an exclusive visit from one of the country’s top players and reflects Aviva’s commitment in promoting rugby in non-traditional rugby playing schools.
Environmental art workshop 26 pupils from St Cuthbert’s Infant School, in Wells visited The Bishop’s Palace and took part in an environmental art workshop. They explored the 14 acres of gardens looking at shape, texture and colour. They found natural objects to create some temporary art pieces; they also made their own prints to display in an exhibition at school to mark the end of their arts week. Their teacher said “The children were thoroughly engaged and suddenly the words ’Outdoor Learning’ had real meaning”. www.bishopspalace.org.uk

Ditcheat Primary achieve award Acting Head, Tracey Trood and Ditcheat School’s Primary Talk Co-ordinator along with some of the children celebrated as they were presented with the Primary Talk award. Ditcheat School have been re-accredited and passed at 100%. This award shows that they still are a school who firmly believes that communication is the most important key to children’s learning. They are very proud of their success. Ditcheat’s Primary Talk Co-ordinator said ‘It has made us all aware of how we interact with children and their needs. Parents, governors, staff and children all help to make this a communicative friendly school’.
Mini Olympics
An artist visit Ditcheat
Children from St Paul’s Primary School in Shepton Mallet attended the mini Olympics at Millfield. Mica won Gold for 80m as well as 800m and also won Silver for Long Jump. Other medal winners from St Paul’s were Komi who won a silver in the 55m Hurdles, Keely who won a bronze in the 600m and Ellis who won Bronze in the quoit throw and Silver in the vortex howler throw. Huge congratulations to all of the athletes that took part.
Colin Bell came into school to help the children paint a mural for the school playground. The children drew sketches of Olympic sports prior to the visit. The sketches were then sent to Colin who sketched them as the children had drawn them onto the main board, then every child in the school painted a small part of the display. The final result is stunning. We are going to put it up on the wall in our playground during the summer holidays ready for the new term.

Children’s Clubs
1 3
Clubs and classes for school-age children are not only after school, but can run at weekends and during holidays. Are you wondering how your child might benefit by joining a club? This list is simply a starting point, but it certainly gives you 10 reasons to investigate sports and other clubs in your area for your children.
Getting Out
Many children spend a lot of time in front of the TV or playing computer games. Club’s can give children an opportunity to explore more varied and healthier activities.
Meeting People and Making Friends
Joining a club gives children a comfortable and appropriate place to meet others with similar interests. This environment can form the basis for lifelong friendships.
2 4
Keeping them Out of Trouble
Studies show that after-school, the twilight hours are more risky to children than night-time hours. Participating in an after-school club reduces the risk of children becoming involved in things that parents would prefer them to avoid.
Learning New Skills
Children who participate in a variety of activities are introduced to new skills and are given a chance to develop them. As children realise they “can do” these things then their self-confidence grows.
10
5 6 8 10
Learn Teamworking
Many activities require children to work together towards achieving a common goal. Whether they are trying to win a game or complete a community service project, children learn to work as a team.
Developing Independence By participating in clubs, young children learn to exist and thrive ‘outside of their family’. Older children learn skills and values that will carry them through to their adult lives.
Civic Mindedness and Values
Some organisations exist as service organisations. Others participate in community service as part of a larger scope of activities. Either way, children can get the chance to learn to look beyond themselves and experience how they can make a difference.
Plain Old Fashioned Fun
7 9
Leadership and Responsibility
Children have the opportunity to make their own decisions – they learn to lead, follow and carry their portion of responsibility.
Improving Selection Prospects
In addition to solid academies, employers and further education establishments like to see well-rounded applicants. Club participation demonstrated over a period of time will help to enhance any application.
Playing a game, camping, singing whatever the focus, children participate because they enjoy the activities, and sometimes fun is as good a reason as any other to join a club. This isn’t the end of the list, we are sure you could add more ideas of your own, but they are 10 great reasons to see what is out there!

Learning is fun!
“A good education is like a savings account; the more you put into it, the richer you are.” The new school year is always an exciting time and sometimes a scary time, too! You can make a real difference to how your children feel about it and how quickly they settle in. Children of all ages retain more information if it is taught in a fun and exciting way. We have created the following ideas to help you to work with your children at home to develop their skills and generate an excitement around their school work.
The alphabet
Recognition and learning through tracing - get your child used to the shapes of letters by finger tracing or by colouring some outline letters in.
AbCDEF Early learning skills
To help your child to get used to controlling their pencil, draw a series of squiggly lines on paper and ask them to draw over them. It can be fun to draw some very basic animal figures and even faces and around hands and feet.
Learning about money
Encourage your child to use money as soon as possible. Allow them to hand over the cash for payment in the shop and also to collect the change. Once they have been given the change, ask them which coins they have been given and how many of each etc.
Hand writing
To encourage story writing find a family photograph or a picture from the internet and ask your child to write a story around what they can see. It may be about a family visiting the zoo and the things they see there or even a trip to the moon. The possibilities are endless.
Time tables
Here are some rhymes to help with some times tables reminders: 56 = 7X8....remember 5 6 7 8 It’s great to be really sure 8x3 is 24! It’s heaven to be completely done, now 7x3 makes 21! If it adds up to 9, it is part of the 9 times table... 18...27...36...45...54...63...72...81...90 He ate and ate and stuck in the door, 8x8 is 64! 12 = 3 x 4....remember....1 2 3 4
Like fingerprints, No two children are alike you know your child is unique. We agree. at Millfield, our aim is to discover the vital spark which makes each child unique and enables them to achieve their full potential. Come and experience Millfield for yourself.

Make a special box in which to keep your best pieces of work this school year. If you have a class mascot why not take inspiration from them to make your box unique and special to this school year. You will need: A plain box file PVA (white) glue Pictures (can be drawings, colourings, cut-outs from comics or photographs) Chose some pictures to decorate the lid of the box file. These could be photographs of your child in school uniform, or magazine cut-outs of favourite characters, or anything else that takes your fancy. If you have any brothers or sisters, it may be an idea to add your name to the side of the box in the same way. This will make it easier to find on the shelf.
Make sure your boots are sparkling clean and then set about decorating them! Our example were heavily patterned already so we just used alphabet beads to spell out “pencils” down one side, but if you start with plain boots you can really go to town, using glitter, sequins, or acrylic paint!
