Boost your child’s confidence Kumon’s maths and English study programmes work to build your child’s confidence and inspire a passion for learning. To unlock your child’s potential, contact your local Instructor for a Free Assessment: Keynsham Study Centre Clare Lovell 01179 699247

If you thought that learning Latin was a thing of the past then think again! Pupils at Chew Stoke C of E Primary School have been learning Latin at one of their after school clubs and having lots of fun doing so. The children of the “Minimus After School Club” recently showed off all they had been learning in an assembly for their fellow students, where they spoke in Latin and read out poems which they had written. The children have been following the Minimus Latin Course, which features stories in Latin about “Minimus Mouse” and the Roman Family that he lived with in Vindolanda. The Latin course is run for the children voluntarily, by local retired teachers Cynthia Troup and Diana Abrahams. Pictured: Pupils from Chew Stoke Minimus Club practising for their assembly.

Gardening club The children at Castle Primary School in Keynsham are changing their entire school grounds with the help of their dedicated caretaker and the gardening club. Not only are the club planting beautiful flowers around the school grounds to bring a smile to everyone’s face but they have also worked very hard to create fantastic allotments and potting shed so that they can grow their very own vegetables. The gardening club are growing potatoes, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, parsnips, strawberries and many, many more delicious vegetables and fruit. All of these are picked and used in the school kitchen. The gardening club are planting trees around the school as well as creating a very interesting conservation area around the school pond which enjoys frogs and also a family of ducks which visit regularly. Well done to every member of the gardening club, the school grounds look fantastic.

Kicking success! On Wednesday 29th February 2012 the Year 6 pupils from Cameley Primary School went to a football tournament at Chew Valley School on the Astroturf. The girls came fourth and the boys came first for the third year running! The team played against Clutton, Ubley, Chew Magna, Chew Stoke, Bishop Sutton, East Harptree and Pensford Primary Schools.

Success for school’s lunchtime team

Staff at St Keyna Primary School in Keynsham have been awarded their first official play certificate with support from Bath & North East Somerset Council and the charity Children’s Scrapstore. Following 15 hours of training from the Children’s Scrapstore, the school’s 10-strong team of lunchtime staff have successfully completed a playwork course endorsed at level 2 by the national organisation SkillsActive. Bath & North East Somerset Council has loaned the school a Scrapstore PlayPod – a converted shipping container in the playground which is filled with fun, colourful materials designed to encourage children to play outside. All contents are supplied by the Children’s Scrapstore which collects and reuses clean waste materials from local businesses, such as foam shapes, cardboard and plastic tubes and drums, netting and packaging. Councillor Nathan Hartley, (Lib-Dem, Peasedown), Deputy Leader of Council and Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: “This project is a huge asset to St Keyna School and the staff have embraced this opportunity to deliver a fantastic experience for the children. Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Play Policy supports children’s right to play both at school and in their communities. Research shows that children’s enjoyment of schools increases when they have a good experience of play; they get lots of physical outdoor activity, come back into class ready to learn and have time to build important friendships.” Rob Sandel, Deputy Headteacher of St Keyna Primary School said that; “The introduction of the PlayPod has been a tremendously positive development for our school. Our children have really enjoyed the opportunities it has given them to get involved in a very wide variety of imaginative and creative play activities. Watching our oldest children working alongside some of our youngest to build shelters and dens has been great fun for everyone! As a school, we are very proud of our lunchtime staff for the commitment they have shown toward gaining this qualification, and look forward to continuing to build on the success our PlayPod has been thus far. We would also like to thank Councillor Brian Simmons for the assistance he has given to our school through the provision of his Ward Councillor Initiative grant.

Garden Games F Simple Treasure Hunt This is perfect for very young children and, although it can be played indoors, is best in the garden. It is an excellent game to play when the children are beginning to get restless towards the end of the party, and will mean that the children find their own presents for a party bag. Age: 3+ Preparation: Collect a large number of little treasures suitable for hiding around the house or garden. You could use toy soldiers or animals. Cellophane wrapped sweets or lollipops are excellent. Toys from fast-food stores can be saved and recycled. Pieces of Lego or other small toy characters may be appropriate. You can also buy bulk packs of party gifts such as bracelets, tooters etc. Use your imagination and start collecting early! Hide the treasure carefully. Some should be very easy to see; some can be hidden more seriously and don’t forget to put some little things at eye level too. Any edible treasure should be easy to find so that it doesn’t linger in the garden. Older children love to help you hide the treasure. Gather the children together, give each child a loot bag and an indication of what sort of treasure they may find, and tell them where to start hunting!

Spider and Flies This is a game of tag with a difference! Choose one child to be the spider; the rest are flies. Tell the children that they are going to play tag, and that the spider is going to try to catch the fly. Every fly that the spider catches becomes part of its web, holding hands with the spider and trying to catch the remaining flies (which can take some co-ordination and concentration!) Each fly that is caught holds on to the chain and helps catch more flies. The last player to be caught becomes the new spider.

6

The Splash Game Not for the faint-hearted, this game is best played out of doors when clothes don’t really matter! It works with mixed family age-groups. Age: 6+ You will need: Small cards with numbers written on them, from 1 to x, x being the total number of players. For 10 players, you need the numbers 1-10; for 14 players, the numbers 1 to 14, and so on. Put the cards in a hat or bag. A small container for water. Choose an appropriate size for the age of your players, the location, the weather etc. A small plastic tumbler usually works well. A large container of warm water, such as a bucket or baby bath. How to play: Choose one player to start. He picks a number out of the bag without letting anyone else (but you) see it, and remembers that number. He then fills up the small container with warm water and stands in the centre of the other players, who form a circle around him, but not too close. You will have to establish the correct distance! The player in the centre faces each player in turn. Each player chooses - and says loudly - a number between 1 and x. Each player must choose a different number. As soon as somebody chooses x, the child in the centre throws the container of water at them! No matter how often this is done, it still comes as a bit of a shock and children love it. If you get all around the circle and all the players have chosen a number but NOT the correct one, the child in the centre has to throw the water over himself!

FATHER’S DAY Sunday 17th June

Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday of June. It is a day to honor fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link between the two. The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day.

PETS R E N COR My name is Hoppy and I am a domestic rabbit. I am not difficult to look after and I love playing with children. I live in a hutch in my owner’s garden and I have a covered in area where I can burrow into my straw and sleep comfortably at night. My hutch is nice and big so I can hop around during the day to get some exercise. I like to eat fresh greens and rabbit pellets too and my owner makes sure I have plenty of fresh water to drink every day, this helps to keep me healthy. I like to chew on things and my owner often gives me some hardwood toys to play with. These also help to keep my teeth clean and strong. My hutch gets cleaned every week and I get a chance to hop around the garden, which I love. While my hutch is being cleaned I also get groomed with a soft bristled brush, this makes me feel very special and I look forward to it every week. Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pets after cats and dogs and there are many different breeds of rabbit. Some of us can live for 8 to 12 years, a very long time. Some of my friends have been house trained and now live inside their owner’s houses! We are very intelligent animals and we can be trained with a little bit of patience and care we can be taught to respond to commands using reward based training. We are amazing animals and make fantastic pets.

Games for...

Car Journeys Fingers Out This is a simple guessing game for which you just need two kids! Great for passing the odd waiting moment or car journey.

Age: Any

The children face each other and count to 3. On ‘3’ they put out one hand - either as a fist or with 1, 2 or 3 fingers extended, shouting out at the same time a number between 1 and 6. Add up the number of fingers extended. If a child guessed the exact number of fingers shown they score 2 points. If they guessed nearest the number of fingers shown, they score 1 point. If there is a tie, no points are scored. The first to a given number or points perhaps 5 or 10 - wins.

I Packed My Suitcase I Packed My Suitcase is a classic memory game which is useful for all sorts of occasions, from a doctor’s waiting room to a long car journey! You can adapt it to all ages of kids, and adults enjoy playing as much as children.

Age: 5+

The first player thinks of a word beginning with the letter ‘a’ and then says, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple”. The next player repeats the sentence and adds something beginning with ‘b’, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple and a banana”. The next player adds a word beginning with ‘c’: “I packed my suitcase with an apple, a banana and a canary.” Play continues until someone can’t remember the list or makes a mistake. Depending on their age, you can either prompt them or disqualify them! Keep going until all players but one are disqualified, or until you reach the end of the alphabet. Prior Park is a beautiful 18th century landscape garden, home to one of only four Palladian Bridges in the world. The garden is a great place to come for a family fun day out. We have regular activities on for children, including story telling in the summer house and our explorer tracker packs, available all year round, which give children the chance to discover the wonders of the garden. This summer we have some great events lined up, from children’s outdoor theatre in June to our summer trail in July. We’re open whatever the weather, so if you want to play in the sun or splash about in your wellies, there’s always something to do at Prior Park.

Please check our website for events at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/prior-park

Diamond Jubilee Collage Even the youngest children can enjoy having a go at creating a Diamond Jubilee collage using symbols to represent Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne. We started by drawing the number 60 in gold pen on an A3 sheet of construction paper. The boys were then given a selection of crafty bits and pieces from which to choose. For a more complex collage you might to include photos of the Royal Family, palaces or state coaches, royal symbols such as crowns, sceptres, and even a corgi or two! You could also add Union Jacks and Commonwealth flags.

The Snorgh and the Sailor By Will Buckingham, 5+

The Secret Lake

Snorghs don’t share their soup, they don’t have visitors and they definitely don’t like adventures. However, when a bedraggled sailor turns up on his doorstep telling him stories of exotic lands, the Snorgh finds himself going on an adventure after all. This witty and touching story, packed full of emotion, tells how a lonely old creature is transformed by an unlikely friendship and the discovery that we can do the most amazing things, if we dare to.

By Karen Inglis, 7+ Stella and Tom, her younger brother, have moved to their new home in London. It’s not long before they become intrigued with their elderly neighbour’s dog Harry as he keeps disappearing and then returning wetthrough. Where does he go? The two children, over their summer holidays, embark upon a quest to solve this mystery. They soon discover a boat that has been buried and a tunnel that leads them to a secret lake. But who is the terrified boy rowing towards them and whose are those children’s voices coming from beyond the woods? Stella and Tom discover that they have travelled back in time to their house and gardens as they were one hundred years earlier. As the story unfolds, Stella and Tom uncover some startling connections between the past and the present.

The Emerald Atlas: The Books of Beginning By John Stephens, 9+ One frozen night, when the world was covered with a blanket of snow, Kate, Michael and Emma were taken from their beds. Ever since that night, Kate has been haunted by the silhouette of a tall, thin man. Ten years later, after spending time in a number of miserable orphanages and the memories of their parents now a blur, the children arrive at Cambridge Falls. However there is something strange about this place, Kate is sure she has seen the dark, crooked house before. As the children start to explore the house they discover an old, empty leather book. Upon touching the book an ancient magical prophecy is set in motion. This is a fantastic magical adventure story. The first thrilling book in the most exciting children’s fantasy series since Harry Potter!

Homemade Chicken nuggets Chicken breasts (or fish fillets for fish fingers) Plain flour Egg (beaten) Fresh breadcrumbs Black pepper and dried herbs (optional) Cut uncooked chicken breasts into pieces (either strips for chicken fingers or chunks for chicken nuggets). First dip them into flour (seasoned with pepper and herbs if you like), then into beaten egg and finally breadcrumbs - this can be fun if you set up a conveyor belt system and have your children helping. The best way to make the breadcrumbs is to put some day-old bread in a blender, although you can crumble it by hand so that it becomes fine breadcrumbs. Brush with a little oil and cook under the grill for 10 to 15 mins, or bake in the oven at 190C/Gas 5 for about 15 to 20 mins, turning halfway through. Serve with vegetable hash, cheesy mash or potato & cauliflower cakes and vegetables.

Strawberry Muffins 6 tablespoons butter 3/4 cup sugar (granulated or caster) 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 14 strawberries, preferably fresh 2 cups all-purpose (plain) flour Pinch salt 1 tablespoon baking powder Strawberry jam Heat oven to 350F, 180C, Gas Mark 4 Grease a muffin tin or fill with paper liners. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and then add the milk. Chop the strawberries up into small chunks, then stir them carefully into the batter, trying not to break them up too much. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder into the bowl, then fold in. Do not over mix. Fill muffin cups halfway. Add a scant teaspoon of jam, then add more batter to fill two thirds of the cup. Bake until the muffins begin to brown and a toothpick comes out clean (about 20 to 25 minutes). Remove the muffins from the tin and cool.

Beach Beautiful Now that summer is around the corner and many people have their summer holidays booked, the all-important beauty countdown has begun, and many women are preparing for beach bods ready to recline on sun loungers supping mojitos! To get in tip-top condition for your holiday, follow our beach babe guide to getting groomed and gorgeous in time for take-off. First of all, prepare to tan, firm up your wobbly bits then get silky skin, glossy locks and gorgeous feet & hands...and you’ll be ready to dazzle. • Tanned skin always looks slimmer and sexier. Before you go on holiday, apply a fake tan either at home or professionally by a salon • Try a few sessions at the gym or with a personal trainer before you go away, exercise will help the wobbly bits firm up, lose weight and the boost of circulation is also great for the skin.

• We would never recommend crash diets but you if would like to lose a few pounds for the beach, speak to your local slimming consultant. • Try waxing or electrolysis for a long lasting de-fuzzing! • Make sure you have fantastic looking feet when wearing your flip flops by having a pedicure. The same with your hands, try a manicure so your fingers look perfect holding that cocktail. • A trip to the hairdressers before take-off will ensure your hair is in tip top condition for the sun and don’t be afraid to wear hats on holiday. This will protect your hair from harmful rays. • Don’t be afraid to accessorise swimwear or beachwear. It can take the attention away from problem areas and big jewellery makes your body appear smaller. • Apart from protecting your eyes, sunglasses are an instant confidence boost, adding allure regardless of what you’re wearing. • Lastly, it’s always great to feel your best but as every woman obsesses about at least one part of their body. Remember that and then get on with enjoying yourself, it’s YOUR holiday!

Start at a moderate speed and bend your knees, then take your back foot off the scooter and plant it on the ground. With your knees still bent, use the planted foot to boost yourself into the air. While in the air, bend your knees and put your foot back on the scooter, land and ride away. This trick is used for jumping higher and longer.

Rock to Fakie

Ride up to a curb, rail, coping etc. and jay hop, try to land with the middle of the scooter on the curb and balance. When you are ready, lean back and bunny hop, if done correctly you should land safely riding backwards.

Wheelie (or manual)

Ride at a moderate pace, move your feet to the back of the board. Keep your back foot on the board, lift pressure of your front foot and pull up on your handle bars. Lift the front wheel but keep the back on the ground.

Indian Air

Bunny hop or no comply off a ramp and cross your legs like an x and bring them up a bit, then put your feet back on and land.

Tail Tap

Ride up to a ledge or curb, going straight at it. Bunny hop and turn 90 degrees. While you are in the air, put your back foot on the brake then land on the curb with only your back wheel on it and your front wheel in the air. Balance as long as you can and then, when you are ready, bunny hop off of the ledge/curb and turn 90 degrees in the air, land and ride away.

Bunny Hop

Ride at a moderate pace, bend your knees, jump up and pull the board firmly against feet by pulling up on the handle bars. Land with your board straight or you’ll stack.

Jayhop Stall

Jayhop onto any edge such as a curb, park bench, rail or whatever. Balance as long as you can. Jahop back onto the ground.

Do a wheelie then attempt a bunny hop. What you want to do is kinda like a wheelie but both wheels leave the ground. The front wheel should be higher than the back wheel.
