few weeks ago, I was privileged to attend the English premier screening of ‘Love Thy Nature’, a film written and directed by Sylvie Rokab and narrated by Liam Neeson. It examined how we interact with our natural world – flowers, trees, birds, animals - and suggested ways in which we might work to sustain our environment and repair the damage done recently to the climate. One observation made was how we as humans reap happiness and re-assurance from our surroundings – the original ‘feel-good’ factor. I often walk through our Memorial Park and enjoy seeing how many people of all ages gain pleasure from its beautiful, relaxing environment. Young mothers with their babies having picnics, families playing together with the play equipment or sports such as cricket or football, others walking or just sitting, gazing at the tranquil setting; it is a very special place in our community. An attractive environment is always enhanced by a lack of litter and it was encouraging to hear that the ‘South West in Bloom’ judges visiting our town recently remarked on how our neighbourhood roads were generally clean and litter free. Well done to everyone who picks litter up or doesn’t throw it down in the first place! It’s been a busy summer with another successful Music Festival week and increasing numbers of events at ‘The Space’. Film, operetta, plays and music; there have been encouraging attendances so far, but more support is needed if we are to develop Keynsham as a complete cultural experience. So, do please keep a look out for forthcoming events. You can find out what is going on by looking at the poster boards in the Town Council windows. Best wishes,

KEYNSHAM WINTER FESTIVAL FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER 6 - 9PM T
his popular community event, which thousands of local people attend, will follow a Festival of Lights theme and children from local primary schools will be invited to join workshops within their schools to make lanterns for this year’s procession. Following on with the light theme a special performance of Aladdin performed by Brave Bold Drama will be showing in the Space (above Keynsham Library). This year, we will be encouraging all age groups to come along and join in the town’s celebrations. A colourful and bright procession will take place along the whole of the High Street from in front of St. John’s Church down to the stage (which will be located in Temple Street) There will be numerous locations around the town where a variety of performances by local community groups will be available to entertain our community. There will also be a fun fair (which will be a few small rides on Market Walk) and stalls on Temple Street and the High Street. Shops and local businesses are being encouraged to stay open and join in the fun.

Help yourself stay well this season Now that summer is turning to autumn, the Wellbeing College has a range of activities planned to help you stay positive
H
ow are you feeling now the summer is almost over? Could you do with some free support to help you stay well throughout the autumn and winter? Perhaps you live alone and tend to get isolated or maybe you have lost your job and could do with a hand up to get motivated again. You may have a long-term health condition and could do with some regular support, such as joining a gentle exercise or relaxation session. The Wellbeing College is here to provide you with opportunities to help you to help yourself, whatever your situation, as long as you are 16 or over and live in the Bath and North East Somerset area. Most of our courses and activities are free! In spite of our name we are nothing like school! We provide lots of fun and interesting things to learn and do at various accessible venues around Bath and North East Somerset. Our research shows that attending one of our free courses or activities significantly improves people’s wellbeing.
One of the favourites is the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ workshop, a session that explores key areas and how you can develop them to improve wellbeing. An attendee commented: “The course has made me more aware of how many positive ways I work towards maintaining my own wellbeing. It has given me confidence in my own skills.”

ANNUAL CANDLE OF
REMEMBRANCE SERVICE T
his year’s Annual Candle of Remembrance Service will be held at Keynsham Methodist Church, Victoria Centre, High Street, on Saturday 12th November, starting at 3.00pm. This is an opportunity to remember babies and children who have died, whatever the age of your child, the circumstances and whether your loss was recent, or sometime ago. The service includes poems, music, prayers, songs, and a roll call of the children’s names. After the service refreshments are served in the hall. eynsham & District Talking Newspaper celebrates 1,500th edition
The Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset, Alan Hale, visited the studio of the Keynsham & District Talking Newspaper (on 30th June), to celebrate the 1,500th edition of the service. Alan commented, “The Keynsham Talking Newspaper has been a part of town life for so long and part of individuals’ lives for so many years. I am pleased to be able to help celebrate this massive milestone in their service and I would offer a very big thank you to all of the volunteers involved for the service they provide.” Started in 1983, the service is a free weekly audio magazine on memory stick, sent through the post to almost 100 listeners from Keynsham, Bristol & Bath and surrounding villages. The oldest listener was 105 in February and the longest-standing listener has been listening for 30 years. KTN was very pleased that Alan came to celebrate the 1,500th edition and to record an interview for listeners about his most interesting life and his work with B&NES, the Police, and with the Keynsham Food Bank and the Lions. If you or someone you know is unable to read newsprint, we would be delighted to supply them with the KTN service. I
t is all steam ahead for Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan.
Following the successful launch consultation events on 8th and 9th of February 2016 the data has been collated, analysed and a Vision for Keynsham has been formulated (see below). KEYNSHAM NDP VISION (DRAFT) Keynsham is a historic town from Roman times that occupies a strategically important location between Bristol and Bath. Embracing its expanding community it will continue to develop as a vibrant town acting as retail, market and service centre for the surrounding area. It will drive forward as a more significant business location given its key location in the Bristol to Bath creative corridor. This will be supported by appropriate development of road infrastructure and parking. The town shall continue to protect its conservation area and listed buildings whilst

retaining and enhancing its unique heritage. Accommodating a growing population the town must ensure it retains its independence. Consequently sustaining a separate identity in an attractive and green rural setting will remain a priority and Keynsham should become a more sustainable, accessible and well-connected place in which to live and work. An enhanced town centre inspired by its heritage will develop in a locality enriched by its park, rivers and green spaces. Encouraging a diverse art and culture sector shall continue to be a key objective. This will support the town as an on-going popular place to live and visit while strengthening a productive climate for creative industry. Keynsham will look and feel a ‘green’ town in every sense. This should include energy use, bio diversity and an infrastructure to encourage

walking and cycling. The town must retain its secure and welcoming environment. The tremendous social enterprise and support will continue to be a key feature for residents and visitors. The next step is a series of introductory topic group meetings. The topic areas that the Neighbourhood Development Plan will cover include: Road, Transport, Parking and Infrastructure meeting on Wednesday 7th September at 6.45pm for 7.00pm. Heritage, Culture, Tourism, Marketing and Development for the Built Environment meeting on Wednesday 7th September at 7.45pm for 8.00pm. Recreation, Leisure, Sport, Health and Community Education meeting on Thursday 8th September at 6.45pm for 7.00pm. Sustainability, Environmental and Ecological meeting on Thursday 8th September at 7.45pm for 8.00pm. All meetings to be held in the Space (above Keynsham Library – entrance opposite Iceland). Refreshments will be provided on arrival. If you would like to attend any of these meetings please email or telephone (details below) to confirm a place.
The members of these topic groups, will, during the Autumn months, be looking at the strengths and weaknesses, objectives and threats for Keynsham to formulate a series of consultation surveys for the community of Keynsham to be involved in. All the data from these future consultations will be used to produce the policies that will form the Neighbourhood Development Plan. For the Business, Employment and Economic Growth topic group there is to be a separate business breakfast meeting which will be held at Somerdale Pavilion on 27th September 2016 from 8.00am – 9.15am. At future meetings of this topic group it is hoped that links for a business environment within the town will be created and other areas that will be looked at include employment skills requirements and the availability of facilities and working spaces for local businesses. Results from future discussions will help formulate business policies for the Neighbourhood Development Plan. eynsham & District Twinning Association has been busy! Our new Treasurer, Pete, organised on-line banking, which was a little tricky but now a success! The year also brought us great rewards not only in some new members but with our social activities. Our next success came with a Valentine Barn Dance – hot supper served - all attending had a really fun evening. April – Quiz - again great support, lots of prizes and a good supper served to all. Grateful thanks go to those who supported the events – and the Committee for their time and efforts. The Twinning Association has supplied many items for the Time Capsule to be buried soon, who knows in future years if unearthed, residents of Keynsham will be able to see items and read all about Twinning! Next year 2017 brings a special anniversary 40 years of Keynsham and District Twinning Association, with our twin town Libourne, France. This very special event must not go unnoticed by Keynsham Town and its residents – it is a truly great achievement and one to continue. I trust that Keynsham will have flags and bunting from UK and France being on view all around our Town during the celebratory week. The Committee will be meeting shortly to organise a special programme for Libourne members 40th Anniversary Visit – anticipated to be during July 2017. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
A
fter a pre-festival week of horrendous weather, the 2016 Keynsham Music Festival exceeded pessimistic expectations and ended with a packed Park in glorious sunshine. Around 15,000 people spent the afternoon and evening in the park enjoying a huge range of original music with a local focus but with performers from as far away as Australia. In fact, over the whole Festival week the total attendance to musical performances was just under 20,000. Of the performers, 274 were Keynsham people, of which one third were young Keynsham people. Taking the immediate population as currently just around 18,000 these are extraordinary figures for a local community event albeit an event with a growing local and national prestige.

The 2016 Festival was about consolidating the innovations of the previous two years, with high quality performances from a wide range of music during the week, and the development of Festival Saturday.
The Festival continues to maintain its quality, its inclusiveness and continues to give Keynsham the benefit of a very significant economic input, as recorded in some detail during the 2014 Festival. Morris dancing for all in the park on the Saturday afternoon

MIDWEEK This year the quality of the midweek performances from the baroque concert on the Tuesday evening to the cabaret jazz on the Wednesday reached a new height of excellence.

It is the success of the Sunday in Keynsham Park that allows these midweek performances to happen, and it is still a frustration to Festival organisers when people say that they didn’t know that things were happening.
A new feature of the Festival this year was the Grounded Garden seen here with Keynsham’s Emma Hutchins performing on the Saturday afternoon. A great and very successful way for more performers to take part on the Sunday and Saturday and to have a more intimate performance space. The Garden was pretty much full for most of the weekend.
But loyalty remains for the annual opera in The Park on the Festival Thursday, with over a 100 braving what was obviously going to be a wet evening! It was. The Festival Association’s determination to decorate the town for Festival week also took an upturn this year with wind defying bunting around Market Walk and the new street banners. So much so that the Association were asked to leave them intact for the Keynsham in Bloom judging a few weeks later.

Also new this year was the pop-up installation by Keynsham’s ArtSpace movement offering a gallery and sales opportunity for local artists and workshops for the public on the Festival weekend: budding potters took the opportunity! Further art works aimed at young people (perhaps) was the StreetArt installation adjacent to the skate park.
The Saturday folk performance tent featured some local celebrities, not only nationally esteemed Bath Cellist Beth Porter, but also the managing director of St Monica’s Trust’s Keynsham development seen here with his band.
Once again the Festival Association would wish to thank everybody who took part, performers and amazing volunteers, our site crew, fresh from the mud of Glastonbury and our sponsors regular and new. Nothing of this magnitude could possibly happen without them.
The 2017 Keynsham Music Festival will be the 20th anniversary of the town’s Festival. Plans are already under way for something very special with a huge focus on Keynsham. KEYNSHAM WALKERS
ARE WELCOME GROUP A
nother busy few months for Keynsham Walkers are Welcome group. We have been averaging about 30 participants for the last few walks, which is very encouraging. May, June and July have seen us complete the circular Saltford/Manor Road woodland walk, a picturesque walk around the countryside by Midford, and a super trek back from Pensford. The last 2 walks, we have utilised the services of Diala-Ride to get us to our starting points. On each walk we were blessed with lovely weather. The coming months will see us visit some of the gardens that were entered in the recent Keynsham in Bloom competition. (Sunday August 21st). Another by train to Bradford-on-Avon to join in their Walking Festival (Sunday September 4th). This similar event last year attracted our biggest attendance to date. Tuesday September 27th we will be holding our AGM at the Manor House
Hotel commencing at 6.00pm, when a report on the year’s activities will be presented, and officers of the organisation will be elected. This is open to all Walkers who have taken part in the last year’s events. It will be followed by a meeting of the newly elected officers and organisers to plan the Winter programme. We would like to thank Keynsham Town Council for the award of a grant of £600 to help towards the costs of next years’ Walking Festival which will take place on April 8th-9th. We have been invited by Bath & North East Somerset Council to help in producing a leaflet for the Keynsham area in their series of walks along the River Avon Trail.

In Bloom K eynsham Children’s cress men growing competition. On Saturday 13th August 2016, some of the children that entered and won prizes in the In Bloom 2016 cress men growing competition attended Keynsham Farmer’s Market to collect their certificates and prizes. The overall winners prizes were presented to Laila and Casper Reynolds, runners up prizes were awarded to Sam Clough and Elin Carys Dickinson. Certificates and a small prize for entering were awarded to Ray Young, Braeden Wells, Matthew Wells, Nancy Burgoyne, Grace Barrow, Emily Trott, Mya Lily Dickinson, Max O’Sullivan, Louis Clay, Oscar Fitzgerald, Hugo Abrahams, Bertie Gilmore, Maria Wills, Sid Kennedy, Maxwell Gammon and Emily Clough. TWO SUCCESSFUL YEARS
FOR KEYNSHAMNOW O
ur Youth Council, KeynshamNow has completed its first two year cycle and in our September meeting on 14th in The Space at 5.30pm, we will have elections for all officers of the council. September is a time for new beginnings and so it is for us. But, before we move on, our thanks goes to those members leaving the group for making a Youth Council for Keynsham a reality. Particular thanks to Dan Crouch who was one of our mentors and is leaving to train for the priesthood. Also, Jacob Gregg-Harris who was our media coordinator. In June, two of our members Millie, our current Chair, and Steph our current Secretary spoke
for Remain and Leave at the Euro Referendum Debate in The Space. A panel of six argued for and against the EU, chaired by B&NES and Town Councillor, Lisa O’Brien. Millie and Steph spoke very well for 5 minutes each and received much praise and support from the packed in audience. It was wonderful to hear the young people’s opinions on a matter which will affect them more than anybody else. Neither of them could vote in the referendum which is one reason why KeynshamNow supports the reduction of the voting age to 16 years in all elections and referendums. In July, for the first time, we had a stall at the
KEYNSHAM NEWS
Music Festival. We feel that we need to be better known so the stall was a way of raising our profile to the whole community. Our principle tasks were asking people to sign a petition for floodlights at the skateboard park which has been promised but still has not happened; to raise money for Butterflies, our chosen charity, by selling cakes and to seek the opinion of young people by finding out what is good and not so good about living in Keynsham. The stall had various members of KeynshamNow supporting it all day.

August’s meeting was about preparing for the year ahead and reflecting on our past events. KeynshamNow meets once a month in The Space and is always keen for young people from around 13 to 20 to join us. Our main purpose is to educate young people into how our democracy works and how we can use it to support the young. Any young person who lives in Keynsham is welcome to come to our meetings. Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. No, I have lived in Kingswood for 48 years, but worked in Keynsham for 30 years at Cadbury’s! Q. What is your experience as a Grounds Maintenance Worker? A. Before I joined the team I worked for 2 years as a Greenkeeper carrying out various duties on a Championship Golf Course! Q: What do you think you will enjoy, working for the Council? A: I like working outside maintaining the many green open spaces & play areas Keynsham has to offer, I also like meeting local residents, especially when they compliment me on the work I’ve just carried out!
Q: Away from work what are your hobbies/ interests? A: I am a keen golfer as well as Show Secretary for a local Orchid Society. I am also Chairman of the Warmley Flower Show Committee, and a keen horticulturist with a passion for orchids, tropical & sub-tropical plants. I also support the Bristol Botanic Gardens at Stoke Bishop up on the Downs. Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: I think the residents of Keynsham are very lucky to have such a well kept park in the centre of town, I am also very impressed with the range of amenities on offer for all ages to enjoy!

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY T
he Society, fifty years old last year, is a well-established part of Keynsham life. Over the years we have run several exhibitions to mark particular events and anniversaries and published books on local history. At present, the Society is flourishing, with a range of activities that are well supported by our membership, currently at 130. The core of our annual programme is our evening talks, held on a Monday each month. These are on topics related to local history, interpreted fairly loosely, so they cover a range of subjects. In the coming year they will include a Keynsham Abbey and Chocolate Making in Greenbank. We also offer a variety of summer visits, this year including a coach trip to Kingston Lacy House near Wimborne and a visit to the unique Claverton Pumping Station near Bath. Some of our members take an active role in researching local history and the Society’s annual journal provides a permanent record of the work done, often including personal accounts by people who grew up in “old Keynsham”. A group
is also drafting pieces for a book on Keynsham history since the end of the War. Another project, now approaching completion, is a set of guided walks leaflets, each for a country walk of about 5 miles with details of the history to be found along the way. The first two of these were published in April, with support from Keynsham Town Council, and have proved very popular. They are available at Keynsham Library, the Town Council, or Community@67. Whether you are one of the newcomers to the town, or just looking for a new interest, this is the best time of year to join the Society, as our membership year runs from 1st September. Members have free admission to our lectures and the opportunity to take part in all the Society’s activities. SPACE I
t has been a busy Summer for The Space – Keynsham’s studio theatre aiming under the auspices of the Keynsham Arts Consortium to provide a platform for performing arts in the heart of Keynsham. Since work began over 4,000 people have attended events at The Space, ranging from concerts to professional touring theatre groups and light opera. This summer saw a sell-out audience for the film Love Thy Nature, together with an introduction from Brazilian film maker and director Sylvie Rokab. This was preceded by the nationally acclaimed Mikron Theatre Company with their production of “Pure” – a story of chocolate making from the 19th century until the corporate take over of the 21st. Then there was a threenight run of HMS Pinafore from the Stanilas Theatre Company, new, young and entirely energetic! Keynsham’s new online ticket facility, available for whole-community use has taken well over £4000 in ticket sales this summer, giving Keynsham a central place where tickets can be bought in a professional way.
Also in the near future there will be an upturn in presentation with improved signage on The Space’s evening door opposite Iceland in Temple Street, and better displays of advertising whats on. The whole thing is run by volunteers struggling to offer the town a pertinent and exciting range of cultural events. Over the autumn look out for a return visit of vocalist and musician Chris Hutch, and concert by our local light opera group KLOGs (September) and a recital from nationally acclaimed classical pianist An-Ting Chang (October), and Keynsham FilmWorks resume their monthly screenings on the first Thursday of the month in September. Details of all performances can be found in the Keynsham Town Council office and on posters in the Library and along the High Street.
