oni Mitchell in her classic song ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ comments ‘you don’t know what you’ve got till its gone’ and how true of our water supply. The recent main failure in much of our town and the wider area caused panic buying, a real threat to the vulnerable and closure of schools and public events. Fortunately this is a very rare occurrence and Bristol Water were able to restore supplies over the next 24 hours. This is an exciting summer season with a superb 20th Keynsham Music Festival delivered week commencing 26 June before our weather took a down turn. The trustees and organisers of this widely acclaimed festival can be well proud of a record breaking event that generates tremendous pleasure and economic benefit for Keynsham. We have also been visited by the judges from SW in Bloom on 14 July as Keynsham again goes for gold. The judges were most impressed with the amazing bicycle trail and the many efforts throughout the town coordinated and delivered by the Keynsham in Bloom team.

July also witnessed the 40th anniversary of our twinning partnership with Libourne in France. We were delighted to welcome a large group of French visitors including Mayor Philippe Buisson. As a lasting record of our relationship we were pleased to jointly name a room in our new Civic Centre the ‘Libourne Lounge’. Looking forward may I suggest two important dates for your diary. Firstly we have the rearranged Grants Presentation Evening in The Space on the evening of Wednesday 18 October. he Great Bike Trail is proving to be a huge success with over 70 bikes on display around town. The Trail will be running until 30th September and trail maps are available from the Town Council office for 20 pence. COMING TO KEYNSHAM! T
urn It UP is a brand-new singing club for teens. Starting this September, Turn It UP is for teens aged from 12 – 17 who love singing pop or want to learn how. The first session is on Wednesday 13th September and we meet every Wednesday evening during term time from 7.00 – 8.30pm at the Somerdale Pavilion, Cross Road, Keynsham, BS31 2FW. Turn it UP is all about having fun and singing as a group. Whether you’re into Bruno, Ariana or Ed, you don’t have to be good at singing, you just have to LOVE it! There is no scary audition, no need to read music and we use backing tracks guaranteed to make everyone feel a star!

RUBBISH COLLECTION IS
CHANGING 6 NOVEMBER L
ook out for your new wheeled bin or re-usable rubbish bag delivered to your home between 25 September and early November. Preparations are moving forward for the new service.
WHAT IS CHANGING AND WHY? From 6 November we will be collecting rubbish every other week in wheeled bins or re-usable bags for the majority of residents. Recycling, including food waste will continue to be collected weekly. The chargeable garden waste collections will remain every other week. The changes will help to keep the streets cleaner, increase recycling and make the services more affordable.
FIND OUT YOUR CONTAINER ALLOCATION In March we sent a letter out with the Council Tax bill to let you know what container you had been allocated. To check your allocation, enter your address at www.bathnes.gov.uk/recycle or contact Council Connect. If you have a query with your allocation please contact Council Connect. Where households have 2 or more children in nappies, 6 or more people in their household or a clear medical need they may
be able to apply for a larger bin. If you need to change your allocation, please contact Council Connect on 01225 394000. They will talk through your needs, and then if appropriate pass on your request for change of container. We will contact you to let you know the outcome of your request. In the meantime, your original allocated container will be delivered to you before the start of the new collection as it will be too late to prevent this happening. If we have agreed to issue an alternative container, we will arrange to replace your original with your changed container.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? • Week beginning 28 August – Royal Mail will deliver a leaflet to you giving you more information about the new service • From 25 September to early November– we will deliver the wheeled bins/re-usable rubbish bags to 78,000 households. The bins will be delivered to the front edge of your property or your reusable rubbish bag will be delivered to your door. Please

eynsham is getting bigger! And there are even more plans for growth over the next 20 years. It is already clear that residents have strong feelings about how the town should develop and grow, and that this should happen in a considered way, such that the character of our community is both improved and preserved. As you may be aware from the spring and summer issues of Keynsham News, the 5 topic groups made up of local residents have been working hard to identify and define the issues that they think are important to the residents of Keynsham. The issues will be used to underwrite the planning policies and aspirations for Keynsham that will constitute the final “Neighbourhood Development

RESIDENTS’ QUESTIONNAIRE Although much work has been done by the Topic Groups to identify the issues from which our planning policies will be written, it is important to be sure that we are speaking for the majority of local people. So to ensure we are ‘on track’, we will be distributing a Residents’ Questionnaire in early October, to find out what things are most important to you. It’s important that EVERY resident has their input into the Plan so although one paper copy of the Questionnaire will be sent to each house, extra copies will be available on request and the Questionnaire will also be available online via a pdf or electronic survey from the Town Council website. There will also be a series of consultation meetings around Keynsham for you to ask questions and gather more information before you fill in the questionnaire. Please do participate if you possibly can as we need you to tell us what matters to you in terms of how Keynsham develops over the next 20 years. Please don’t think that the Questionnaire will be the last opportunity to ‘have your say’ in the NDP. There are sure to be other questionnaires further down the line, directed towards certain groups including one specifically for businesses, one for young people and one specifically addressing the play areas in Keynsham for children to answer. There will also be community forums and meetings, and other opportunities to contribute. You might be forgiven for thinking that the Topic Groups will be putting their feet up for a bit whilst they await the results of the Questionnaire so they can move to their next series of meetings early in the New Year constructing

the planning policies. Don’t be surprised if you see these dedicated groups of people attending the consultation meetings to help inform the residents, hand out surveys and explain some of the issues their groups have already identified.
NEXT PHASE FOR THE NDP Whilst the Topic Groups wait for the responses from the questionnaire, It is now time to move the NDP forward into the Delivery phase, which will involve: • Gathering specific, relevant research and data which will give ‘hard evidence’ to support our plan • Creating maps/images/photos to evidence our issues/support our planning policies • Commissioning specialist Consultations where necessary

KEYNSHAM CLOCKTOWER BOOK The Keynsham Clocktower Book tells the story of the town’s history through a patchwork of pictures on each of the 3 panels. Each panel has an iconic image at its base and a myriad of smaller images that reflect the history of Keynsham to the current day. A very high quality colourful and informative book about the Clocktower has now been produced by the Keynsham Arts Advisory Group and published by B&NES, which shows the pictures in detail, together with associated explanations of the town’s history.

ur annual RHS South West in Bloom competition took place on July 14th. The sun came out to welcome our RHS South West in Bloom judges Bob Sweet, former RHS Head of Shows Judge and Richard Taylor who is also an experienced Green Flag Judge and Eco Schools Assessor. The main High Street looked spectacular, the edition of the High Street Planters, which have been installed as part of the trial one way system, has definitely added to our WOW factor this year. We are hoping to retain GOLD for the 4th year running, results are being announced at the RHS South West in Bloom awards presentation in
October, along with the results of the RHS Its Your Neighbourhood Awards. One of our judges Richard Taylor’s departing message to us after the tour was, “A lovely day in Keynsham with so much to see and so many people to meet. It will take a little time to digest it all. On behalf of Bob and myself can I ask you to pass on our grateful thanks to all the people we met on the judging tour and for your kind hospitality. We have been given the opportunity to see such an array of ‘Blooming’ work right across Keynsham.”

Following on from our regional judging, we spent two days visiting community, business and residents gardens, as part of our Keynsham in Bloom competition. Awards are being presented at our annual presentation event in October, where certificates and prizes will be given out. It was wonderful to see so many inspiring gardens. This year has been busier than normal, with a number of new and exciting projects taking place across the town. Planters have been installed at two other shop frontages, Chandag Road and Holmoak. These have helped to enhance the hard landscaping area. We are grateful to Cllr Lisa O’Brien for sponsoring the planters at Holmoak from her Ward Councillor Initiative fund. 1st Keynsham Scouts and Beavers have been working with us during the run up to the judging and helped to plant up the new planters.
Sadly in 2017, two previous Chairs of the Keynsham In Bloom Community Group, Gill Hellier and Liz Fox, passed away. Their input into In Bloom, especially in the early days of the group was immense. They were both full of inspirational ideas and were not afraid to get their hands dirty taking part in planting projects. In future years, a Cup in memory of Gill will be awarded annually to the best wildlife/conservation garden entry and a Bristol Blue glass vase in memory of Liz will be awarded to the winner of the most artistic garden. They will both be deeply missed.

Keynsham Railway Station has had a complete makeover, with the station garden being completely replanted with the help of £500 funding from the RHS, as part of their Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife. Those of you who visit the station can probably not help but notice the new art installation. The project was funded by ACORP – New Life for Local Lines. The artwork has been created by young members of the Town Council’s TimeOut Youth team, with the help of Priormade artist Rebecca Prior. Next year sees Keynsham in Bloom celebrating its 10th birthday, we are already looking at projects and events to promote Keynsham in Bloom and make our birthday celebrations fun for everyone to enjoy

eynsham & Saltford Local History Society has now completed the final two in a series of four leaflets to encourage families to enjoy country walks in the area and learn something of our local history at the same time. Partly funded by a grant from Keynsham Town Council the leaflets are in full colour and comprise a map with full instructions plus information on points of historical interest along the way. Richard Dyson from the Society said “A great deal of work has gone in to these and we are very pleased with the result. Our area has a rich history but without a guide it is easy to overlook this; there is a story behind almost every building, and some of the fields as well!“ Both walks are circular and between five and six miles in length; they will take two and half to three hours. The new routes covered are: 3. Keynsham to Saltford along the Avon Valley. 4. Chewton Keynsham to Compton Dando and Burnett.

MANOR ROAD FOOTBALL PITCHES EXCITING NEWS

eynsham Town Council is delighted to announce that, with the new football season starting on Saturday 26th August, both junior and full size pitches can now be booked at the Manor Rd playing fields for both fixtures and training. The Council can also provide posts and nets if required. As well as full size pitches, the following sizes are available: 80x50 (9x9), 60x40 (7 x 7) and 40x30 (5 x 5) We would like to welcome Frys and Saltford Football Clubs to Manor Rd, who will be using the pitches each weekend for a number of their teams throughout the season both for fixtures and training. We would also like to welcome back our existing teams Bitton Juniors and Athletico New Inn who will also be using the pitches at weekends this coming season.

A FESTIVAL OF ARTS
T
he best ever? That’s what people have been saying, but what is true is that this summer saw the best ever reliably recorded Festival attendance: The total audience for all Festival events over the Festival week reached 22,152, of which 16,800 were in The Park on the Festival Sunday – and reached an enormous spread of age-groups. 1026 people attended events throughout the week that included, opera, Keynsham choirs, folk and acoustic, Emma Hutchinson’s soul/jazz concert and big band swing in honour of the 40th anniversary of Keynsham’s twinning with Libourne in France. This year also recorded the highest ever total of public donations to the Festival, with around £11,000 collected – and with current grant aid declining our local sponsorship is of crucial importance, as was Keynsham Town Council’s continued and consistent support. This year also saw more Keynsham performers than ever before – ranging from six year olds to 80 year olds – and topped with our first professional band from Los Angeles! While news reports frequently show the failure and decline of Festivals around the country Keynsham’s continued and growing success is very much down to the Festival’s firm roots in the local community, and its clear focus on the whole community.

HERE’S WHAT YOU SAID: So much going on yesterday. I missed some acts that I wanted to see because of clashes - not surprising, I suppose. My personal favourites were Rock Pipes, Baraka and the ever youthful(?) Slapface & the Hoagies. Another rather wet evening for the opera but fully under cover this time, thank goodness. This also resulted in more people coming to the park for an evening of beautifully sung arias. It was the first time that Opera in a Box have appeared here and I hope they’ll be back. A good mixture of traditional opera and best known songs from West Side Story and My Fair Lady. Lovely stuff from lovely people! I managed to catch Bashema in The Ship afterwards - my favourite Jelli performer. A good evening. A full afternoon and evening with lots going on - the good weather helped to fill the park more than on Festival Saturdays in the past. Keynsham Orchestra’s conductor Tim Harrison introduced
his wife Stephanie as the soloist, and she led the rousing finish with Keynsham Orchestra playing Land of Hope and Glory with Union Jacks waving from many parts of the audience. Kodaly’s Hary Janos Suite was played earlier in the evening with Oliver Humpage on the Cimbalom, surely the first time that this instrument was played at the festival (unless you know better?). Barbara Wood: Loved the whole day! Great bands and yes I agree with your choice plus a couple of others! Best one yet! Just wanted to say thank you & well done to all those involved for this year’s KMF - such a great day and great atmosphere, really good day surely the best so far! It is astonishing, and a possibly rarely equalled fact, that Keynsham can boast a Community Arts event which involves around 70% of the immediate town population - and leave the Park site unblemished! That’s why the Music Festival was voted one of the top three UK community free events (Primo Magazine 2014), and why its input into the local Keynsham economy is so significant. of delicious food, great bar and happy people everywhere. Definitely coming back next year. Long may it continue.

ART PROJECT G
reen- fingered young people from Keynsham Town Council’s TimeOut Youth Centre have helped Keynsham in Bloom to breathe new life into a grey unloved patch of land at Keynsham Railway Station this summer. A new artwork installation created by members of TimeOut and Priormade, with support from Severnside Community Rail Partnership. The artwork has been installed on redundant advertising hoarding posts and has brought a blaze of colour to the station entrance. The artwork has been funded by ACORP New Life for Local Lines. The project took place in June and July in TimeOut Youth Centre working with artists to design and then paint the installations for Keynsham Railway Station; approximately 12 young people took part ranging from 13 to 17 years of age. A majority of the young people had never taken part in an art project before and produced some amazing pieces of work, 18 separate pieces of art work in total. The aim of the project was to introduce art based opportunities to young people who had not had that experience before and to have a positive input into the community of Keynsham. The project was open to any young person who wanted to participate. Denise James, Chair of Keynsham in Bloom group said: “When Rebecca Prior the artist delivered the art works to the station, I have to say I was blown away when she unveiled them. They are absolutely stunning and so much detail, the youngsters from TimeOut Youth Club should be very proud of what they have achieved”. The project has given a positive input into the community for young people and has

demonstrated that they are very willing and able to deliver projects within their community. It has also demonstrated that one can be involved in art-based work and deliver quality artwork without being previously involved with art. It has certainly raised the young people’s self-esteem, as everyone who arrives or departs from the station will see their work. It has also been a talking point amongst local people about the art installation at the station done by young people in Keynsham The other major impact for the young people is that it has inspired them to want to do more and by putting this on TimeOut Facebook page will hopefully encourage other young people in other locations in Keynsham to want to do something else. We, in TimeOut, are certainly thinking along those lines and our new Detached Youth Project can help those young people who do not come to TimeOut to engage.

His appearance in The Space as part of his 15 date UK tour this autumn on September 20th, represents a rare chance to see a dramatic reading of his acclaimed one-man play Something Dark, a play that tells the story of his upbringing in children’s homes and foster care, and the search for his family and true identity. KEYNSHAM TWINNING I
t is with great pride, on behalf of Keynsham & District Twinning Association I report on the 40th anniversary celebration of our twinning with Libourne, France.
on-going friendships between the two towns, agreeing that these visits and the strong friendship will continue post Brexit. Libourne Council presented wine to members of the Town Council.
Our visitors all arrived at Bristol airport and were whisked to their guest homes with members of the twinning. Some of those arriving had visited Keynsham many times before. Others including my guests (a Grandma and her grand-daughter) it was their first visit.
Following enjoyable canapés, serenaded by Midsomer Norton & Radstock Silver Band guests then proceeded to Market Walk where we had the opening of the twinning information board - carried out very ably by Mathilde Lalande from Libourne and our own Keynsham youngest member Matthew Hart. The information board is situated on the outside wall of the library and displays details of twinning in our towns.
Our Twinning Committee had worked hard to have a great week of entertainment, and as often happens I had managed to arrange very good weather for the week! Friday we travelled by boat from Bristol to Beese Tea Gardens, where we all enjoyed a superb ploughman’s lunch. In the evening in conjunction with The Keynsham Music Festival Committee we all danced in the top marquee to great music played by The Thornbury Swing Band. Our French friends and those attending had a very good evening. Saturday was a very special Civic event for Keynsham – the official opening of The Libourne Lounge – this was well attended by local Councillors, Bath & N E Somerset Chair Cherry Beath, Libourne Mayor Philippe Buisson, Keynsham Town Council Chairman Clive Fricker, some original members of the twinning, and our current members. A plaque had been installed and it was the duty of Mayor Bouisson and Chair Cherry Beath to open the curtain of our Union Jack and French Tricolour – this did prove rather difficult, but brought even extra smiles to those attending. Both gave speeches highlighting the long and
The remainder of the week we enjoyed a good evening dinner at the Grasmere hotel, where as President, I was presented with a very nice painting of Libourne, which it is hoped will be hung in the Libourne Lounge. Taking picnics for lunch, we also had a coach trip to Chalford Manor House on Tuesday and a visit to Bristol Botanical Gardens, the 40th celebration was brought to a close with a friendly rivalry skittle match. Union Jack and Tricolour pins were given to all twinning members from both towns. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Keynsham Town Council staff, Twinning Committee, members and all who helped contribute to such a fabulous fortieth festivity. • 255g (9 oz) plain flour • 3 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 100g (4 oz) caster sugar • 60g (2 oz) butter
• 225ml (8 fl oz) semiskimmed milk • 110g (4 oz) apple peeled, cored and chopped
1. Preheat oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin, or line with paper muffin cups. 2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. 3. In a separate bowl, cream together sugar and butter. Stir the flour mixture into the sugar mixture alternately with the milk. Fold in the fruit. Pour batter into prepared muffin tin. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the centre of a muffin comes out clean.

eynshamNow is the town’s youth council whose purpose is to represent young people in the community and to ensure that they understand about our local and national democracy. We had a community stall at the Keynsham Music Festival where we challenged the community to a hula hoop competition. The winner, Daisy Chan managed to keep going for 3 minutes 38 seconds which was the highest score of the day, beating everybody in the adult category as well as the childrens’. Thanks to all the “good sports” who took part. We raised nearly £90.00 for CLIC, our charity this year. We hope to be in partnership with CLIC again for the Winter Festival. Daisy is pictured with her sister and Dani Phillips, Chair of KeynshamNow. In September, members of KeynshamNow will address the Keynsham Area Network, and explore two questions close to their heart which are:- Why young people are not interested in local politics? And how can we make Keynsham a better place for young people?. The civic leaders of the community will hopefully learn the answers to these questions at their meeting on September 25th. KeynshamNow is open to all young people, between 13 and 20 who wish to learn more about Keynsham and make a difference for our young people. Our next two meetings are on September 13th and October 11th both at The Space starting at 5.30pm.
