KEYNSHAM NEWS C
ongratulations once again to Keynsham in Bloom Community group who steered our town to yet another Gold Award from South West in Bloom 2016! Winning the accolade for a second year running was fantastic, but for me, the extra-special aspect was that so many parts of our community contributed to this achievement. The tubs planted up and maintained at Queens Road parade with the support of St Keyna School Green Team and the volunteers at @67 have brought colour and increased vibrancy to that area. However, we are especially proud of our Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, who won the South West award for ‘Youth Contribution to the Community’. They took over responsibility for the large planters in Ashton Way car park and, through their efforts, have enhanced the attractiveness of this part of our ‘public realm’. As the nights draw in and autumn is well and truly upon us, our thoughts turn to the impending celebration of our Winter Festival. This year the theme is Light and to that end, volunteers will be working with some of our primary school children to make lanterns in order to take part in the procession and light up the town. Businesses have enthusiastically thrown their support behind the event with their sponsorship at an all time high. Their generosity will be acknowledged in our programme, many will be open on the night to welcome you and others will keep their lights on to contribute to illumination of the town centre. We have learnt lessons from last year and have increased activity the length of the town centre from St John’s parish church at the top end of the High Street to Temple Street by Carpenters Lane, with more attractions, refreshment outlets and stalls generally. We look forward to seeing you there! Best wishes,
Cllr Lisa O’Brien Chair, Keynsham Town Council

KEYNSHAM NEWS
T
he 2017 Keynsham Music Festival will be celebrated as the 20th anniversary of The Festival. There is uncertainty about its exact origins, but there is plenty of archive material for 1997’s Festival, and none for 1996. Possibly there was a very small affair in 1996 – and maybe a reader of this can verify it for us!
SET TO CELEBRATE 20 YEARS
Keynsham Music Festival began with a fledgling Keynsham Town Council wishing to make its mark on the community. What a great move for the town that has developed a Festival that has both longevity and national acclaim – now attracting performers worldwide, while at the same time offering a superb opportunity for local musicians to perform on a very high quality platform. In 20 years of Festivals it is still the local performers and community groups that are the central focus. 1997’s Festival ran for a week, with a range of events, but there was no big day in The Park. The most active day was the first Saturday of the Week with a range of workshops from 2 – 5 pm in the Scout Hut. The Gala Concert was on the Wednesday evening in Wellsway School, and various other events took place throughout the week in St John’s Church, Keynsham Library, Hawthorns and at the old clock tower. We note that some of the venues and events still carry on today, and credited and thanked on the first ever Festival programme is Mr Steve Drew of Keynsham Orchestra. Steve remains a tireless volunteer and performer at the Festival to this day. One of the Keynsham bands playing for a dance in the Church Hall in 97 was the Free Spirit Ceilidh band, and they appeared again in 2004, this time on the top stage in The Park, together with the likes of Fatman Swings and One Step Below. In fact the two former both with Keynsham Musicians

have performed at Keynsham Music Festival more than any other bands as well as the Keynsham Orchestra. In 2004 The Bristol Observer reported that the Festival now attracted 10,000 people and was set to rival and perhaps eclipse the late Ashton Court Festival, its only local competitor in the early years. By now there were four stages in the Park and the pattern that survives to this day was established, with the Keyford Dancing School and KLOGs as regular performers and stalwarts of the Community Stage. 2004 also staged the Proms in The Park on the Saturday evening, and the street procession on the Sunday. And then, as now, it was the involvement of local community groups as performers or stall holders that added that special flavour to Keynsham Music Festival, that despite its size retains an exclusively local focus. With a pattern established the Festival has continued to grow and the Festival week is now re-established. In recent years around 20,000 people have participated each year in one way or another, and a professional survey in 2013 calculated that the Festival brings in nearly ÂŁ500,000 to the local economy. Not bad for the work of mainly volunteers and for a town with an immediate population of just 16,000.
CAN ANYTHING SPECIAL HAPPEN TO CELEBRATE THE 20 YEARS NEXT SUMMER? We hope so. Ideas are already afoot, and can some of those early regular performers be brought back? A meeting for the public will be held in the bar in The Ship on Monday November 14th at 7.30pm, to discuss ideas and take on board your suggestions. There will be a free drink on arrival and nibbles. Please come and play a part in the Festival’s 20th Anniversary plans for next July.

F
rom 13 November 2016, First are making further changes to their services in the Keynsham area and B&NES are making some minor changes to supported services in consequence:
Temporary service 19B which, since September, has been providing a link between Oldland and Keynsham, and servicing the Chandag Estate will be withdrawn.
Service 37 which, since September, has operated from Bristol via Hanham, Longwell Green, Willsbridge, Keynsham and Saltford to Bath will be restored to its former route via Bitton, Swineford and Kelston and will no longer serve Keynsham. In its place, alternate daytime buses on service 19 (Cribbs Causeway – Kingwood – Bitton – Bath) will be numbered 19A and will be re-routed between Willsbridge and Bath to run via Keynsham and Saltford.
Service 38A, which First decided to introduce in September at the eleventh hour, to provide an evening service around the Park Estate loop is not being changed at the moment. Therefore, B&NES has given 3 months’ notice to Bath Bus Company to discontinue the two evening journeys around the Park Estate loop on service A4 from 7 January 2017.
KEYNSHAM NEWS
9
The timetables for services 38 and 349 to/from Bristol will change again but the services are co-ordinated as far as possible. The evening peak journey at 1725 from Bristol on service 349 which Abus extended commercially to the Chandag Estate in September will be curtailed in Keynsham Town Centre after operating round the Park Estate loop. Abus say that use of this bus to the Chandag area has been very poor.
Through both the Bus Service Working Party and also via the Neighbourhood Development Plan, it is therefore looking at whether a more efficient and sustainable “hopper” service could be offered in the longer term. This would comprise smaller vehicles with disabled access that would have greater flexibility and frequency servicing all the Estates through to the railway station, High Street and GP surgeries.
B&NES has arranged for the weekly service 668 that operates one return trip on Mondays from Camerton and Timsbury to/from Bristol City Centre to be re-routed through the Chandag Estate. This will run at 0931 from Courtenay Road and return from Bristol (Union Street) at 1310.
In the mean time, the Town Council and NDP would like to understand how many people would want/utilise such a service if it was available (or suggestions for an alternative service) as this will inform us on the future of transport in Keynsham and whether a hopper service would be a sustainable option. Please send your comments to the Town Clerk at the Keynsham Town Council Office, 15-17 Temple Street, Keynsham BS31 1HF or email ndp@keynsham-tc.gov.uk
Also, B&NES has arranged for service 636, which runs three times a week from Whitchurch through Keynsham Town Centre to Waitrose and back, to be re-routed via Chandag Estate. This will run on Mondays, Weds and Fridays at 1046 from Ashton Way via Chandag to Waitrose. The return bus will leave Waitrose at 1150 on Mondays and Fridays or 1300 on Wednesdays and run via Chandag back to Keynsham Town Centre. Services 636 and 668 are operated by Somerbus under contract to B&NES. The upshot of these changes will be there will be fewer buses serving the Chandag area from 13 November. B&NES has been able to make provision, at no additional cost to the public purse, for a few extra buses per week to serve that area and a full list is shown. B&NES will be going out to competitive tender soon for local bus service 665, on which we consulted users recently. The intention is to revise the service to provide links from the Somerdale development to other parts of Keynsham, and this will include a more regular service through the Chandag area. The new contract will start on 30 April 2017, or earlier if that can be negotiated with the successful bidder. The Town Council is obviously concerned about the future of bus transport in Keynsham and is keen to ensure that everyone who uses (or would like to use) buses has the opportunity to do so.

OW! What a fantastic year it has been for Keynsham in Bloom. Not only did we achieve our second GOLD award for this year’s entry into the RHS South West in Bloom competition, but our Scouts and Beavers brought home a piece of silverware. Keynsham Scouts and Beavers were awarded the South West in Bloom cup for contribution to the Bloom initiative by young persons or a youth group. Ian Carter and Stuart Ballard attended the regional awards in Taunton and were presented with their award by Lord and Lady Fellowes, who congratulated them both on the fantastic work they are doing here in Keynsham. Our own Keynsham in Bloom awards evening was held at the Scout Headquarters, where we recognised the achievements of everyone involved in Bloom this year. We have seen our In Bloom campaign continue to grow over the last 12 months, not only in the regional competition but in our own Keynsham in Bloom garden competition, and we have seen a significant increase in entries. In all we received 55 entries which is an increase of 17 new ones. Our In Bloom window competition which was held during the main judging week was a great

he Keynsham Clocktower Book tells the story of the town’s history through a patchwork of pictures on each of the 3 panels. Each panel has an iconic image at its base and a myriad of smaller images that reflect the history of Keynsham to the current day. A very high quality colourful and informative book about the Clocktower has now been produced by the Keynsham Arts Advisory Group and published by B&NES, which shows the pictures in detail, together with associated explanations of the town’s history. VOLUNTEER DRIVING AND THE FEEL-GOOD FACTOR Have you ever thought of becoming a volunteer driver? Sarah Oughton & Ann Mead at SWAN Transport, Radstock would like to hear from drivers with a few hours to spare each week. The benefits of staying active if you are getting older are well documented. Younger people may be looking to change career or to increase their employment prospects. Those people on a limited budget may find this volunteering opportunity a good way of justifying and helping with costs of running a car. As a volunteer driver you will need your own vehicle and Swan will provide full training and support. Mileage expenses are paid at the Inland Revenue rate. Drivers can choose how much
time they give and are able to organise regular journeys or drive as and when they are available. “Our drivers make a massive difference within their communities and are committed to helping older and disabled people to have independent and fulfilled lives.” Chris who has driven with SWAN for 13 years says: “I love driving for SWAN and meeting interesting people, driving makes me feel lucky to be healthy and helping others. Also the ladies in the office make a wonderful cup of tea!” Last year Swan drivers carried out 4,358 journeys across the county. Join our team of drivers doing extraordinary things in their community and get the feel good factor in your life. Please ring Sarah or Ann to discuss or request an application form on 01761 439548 or email swan.transport@btconnect.com.

TIMEOUT
RECORDING STUDIO T
imeOut has been in a ‘holding mode’ since the last Youth Leader left and the dedicated part-time youth work team has kept a programme going through-out this period. A new Youth Team Leader was appointed in October, so we are now looking at a re-launch of the programme in January, in consultation with young people. The recording studio will be up and running by January 2017 and will be an immense resource for the young people and community of Keynsham and the centre will be connected up to WiFi. Currently the centre is open: Tuesday 19.00 – 21.30 Open Access (50p entrance) Wednesday 19.00 – 21.00 Project Night (Free but limited numbers) Thursday 19.00 – 21.30 Open Access (50p entrance) Open Access nights are drop in times when young people come in for a coffee, chat play some indoor games and plan activities. These are also the times that the youth workers use to build up their relationships with young people, offer support and help with any issues. We also focus on some dedicated activities within these sessions e.g. cooking, film making, music. The Project Night is much more specific and the topics explored are in more depth and would have been suggested in the Open Access sessions. A particular project may last 4 weeks, e.g. Drug and alcohol awareness, sexual health, healthy eating, the environment, make a film.
Regular outreach sessions with those young people who do not come to TimeOut and linking with other local strategies. Junior Youth sessions (training up senior members to become volunteer youth workers). Older ‘chilled session’. Music studio session (weekday and weekend). Extend the popular cooking sessions to a possible ’Master Chef’ style approach. More joint work with other local youth organisations. Restarting the ‘Allotment Project’. Young people’s running club.
We are now at the stage of planning the programme from next January onwards and are looking at a variety of different ideas:

KEYNSHAM WINTER FESTIVAL
FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2
016 will once again see lots of new and exciting changes for the Keynsham Winter Festival and Christmas lights switch on. This is a popular community event which thousands of local people attend and will be themed around a Festival of Light – lots of twinkles and sparkles!! This year, we are encouraging all age groups to come along and join in the town’s celebrations. The procession will be taking on a new route for 2016 and will leave top of the High Street from outside St. John’s Church at approximately 6.15p.m. St. John’s Church bells will peal to let people know that the procession will soon be on its way. It will proceed along the length of the High Street crossing into Temple Street where it will finish at the stage which will be positioned just before Carpenters Lane. There will be a variety of entertainment by local community groups on both the outdoor stage and within the Community Space. The programme of entertainment can be found overleaf. Around town there will be street entertainers, festive food, competitions and activities in various locations. The fun fair will once again be scaled down and shops and local businesses are being encouraged to stay open and join in the fun. There will be crafts and gifts for sale from the market stalls on High Street and also from the Fear Hall. A few spaces still available to traders, please contact Jackie Sydenham, reception@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk or 0117 9868683 for further details.
Look out for our posters and adverts giving details of pre and on the night activities e.g. our annual children’s colouring competition and the Businesses and Traders window competition. The Keynsham Winter Festival Planning Committee are working towards making this an exciting community event that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. The Winter Festival Committee would like to say a big thank you to all businesses and traders who have kindly made sponsorship donations and support in kind towards making this year’s event special. Any further donations or offers of support would be greatly received, for further information please contact Dawn Drury (Deputy Town Clerk) on 0117 9868683 or email deputytownclerk@ keynsham-tc.gov.uk.

WALKERS ARE WELCOME The group recently held an enjoyable walk around Dyrham and its Park. Boarding the Dial-a-Ride minibus in Keynsham, we headed to ‘The Bull’ at Hinton to meet other walkers. It was good to see some new faces among the 26 walkers. Once we reached the countryside we settled down to a lovely ramble and explored the picturesque village of Dyrham. We then moved on to the Park where we looked around the gardens and lakes and the striking St Stephen’s Church which was decorated ready for the Harvest Festival. We then headed up outside the park walls, catching glimpses of a large herd of deer and stopping for a picnic near Hinton Hill Fort. The final stage was the downhill walk back to ‘The Bull’ where friendly staff made us very welcome.
PROGRAMME: November 27th - A treasure hunt around Keynsham December 18th - A seasonal walk around the fields of Keynsham gathering greenery to take back to the Scout Hall where it will be made into wreaths under the tuition of Liz Fox. MEET THE TEAM NICK BIRT
Position: Youth Worker Q. Do you live in Keynsham? A. No I live in Shepton Mallet, Somerset since 1989. Q. What is your experience as a Youth Worker? A. I have 40 years experience of working with young people in a wide variety of work settings, from Teaching, Youth Service to Youth Offending Services. I like to try different approaches to engage young people e.g. using my rescue German Shepherds as a focus when working with difficult to engage young people. Taking young people out of their comfort zone to challenge and re-focus. Partnership working and developing resources has been a key to what I have been involved with over the years. Q: What do you think you will enjoy working for the Council? A: Developing the Youth Work that Keynsham Town Council has invested in and helping realise young people’s ambitions.
Q: Away from work what are your interests? A: Movies, ever since a young boy I have been fascinated with movies, my dad used to take me regularly on Saturdays to the cinema. Music, I like all types of music and have a large vinyl collection as well as CD’s. Travel, has always been in the blood, I have spent 7 years living in Germany and have been to most of Europe and parts of Russia. Cycling and Canoeing are on a joint ‘bucket list’ with an old school friend with trips planned by bike and canoe. I rescue German Shepherd dogs and love cooking and trying food from around the world, but my favourite meal is a full English breakfast, (with black pudding), which I treat myself to every Sunday morning. Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: I am already impressed with the variety of activities and community groups that are up and running in Keynsham. It is heartening to see a public body that is investing in young people, when a lot are reducing or removing services for young people.
