This term, Years 3 & 4 at Midsomer Norton Primary School are learning about Australia. Three classes were lucky enough to be given a didgeridoo performance by Jacob’s father, Mr Cotterill. The children were enthralled by the haunting sound and enjoyed having a go themselves, although they struggled with the circular breathing!
A group of children from Westfield Primary School took part in the Dance Umbrella at The Forum in Bath. The children from Westfield performed confidently and all very much enjoyed it. Last month, Year 4 children from Midsomer Norton Primary School enjoyed a three day residential trip in the beautiful surroundings of Great Wood, near Bridgewater. The children slept in wooden cabins and spent their days creating dens and shelters, building dams, lighting fires, singing around the camp fire and walking in the woods. The children said it was “amazing” and “awesome” and Poppy said “It was the best experience of my life so far!”

Diana Award
A trial to remember
The Academy Of Trinity has been awarded the prestigious Diana Award for their Anti Bullying programme and ethos that is used throughout their school. A group of Trinity school children travelled to London’s Canary Wharf to accept this internationally recognised award along with other winners from across the country. The Trinity award winners were invited to close the ceremony which they did in true Trinity style with a dramatic and memorable peformance! Ben Cohen, England rugby star and supporter of the charity, presented the children, who were the youngest recipients, with their certificates and awards. This was once again a fantastic opportunity for the children of Radstock and we are all very proud of their achievements.
On the evenings of Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th of April, two of Kilmersdon Primary’s classes performed the magnificent production of, The Trial of Goldilocks. This performance was based on the original story written by Roald Dahl. It showed almost a flipside to the classic fairytale, and told how Goldie really isn’t sweet little girl you thought she was. The talented actors of this clever production were none other than the pupils of the year 2/3 class and the year 4/5 class of the school. They were the minds and voices that brought all of the acting and songs together to create this wonderful play. Each child has a different character and their own way of creating a modern twist on this traditional story. This really is a trial to remember! A report by Charlotte Thompson

Visit to Prior Park Children from St John’s Primary School had a sensational time at Prior Park. We sauntered down a steep hill to find a welcoming pond, also a magnificent view. Next we stalked through green arms that arched above us protecting us from the scorching sun. On the other side we traipsed to a splendiferous view to sketch the scenery before our eyes. We wrote a fascinating poem about the aqua blue pond. Then we shuffled down a flight of stairs and sat in an enormous circle as the sun beat against our back then we read out our poems. Soon after lunch we decided to stride round the peaceful, calm lake before very long we found a graceful swan that was constructing its messy nest. Happily, we strolled on to find a crowd of massive carp that looked like blobs of blackcurrant jelly. Then we wrote a description of our favourite animal in the lake accompanied by a beautiful drawing. Just before our trip came to a halt we studied graffiti on the bridge and made up an imaginary person from the graffiti details.
Gymnasts excel
The Harris family and The Welsman family cycled back from Lands End to Paulton to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice, The Laurels Nursing Home, Timsbury and Bath Cancer Support Unit over 5 days. The men did the cycling with the children joining in on the last day and cycling from Glastonbury to Paulton. Sarah, Martin, Izzy, Jenson,Tina, Alan, Jordan, Nathan, Liam, Lucas all did a fantastic job, well done.

The boys gymnastics team from Writhlington Sports Centre recently took part in a competition at Writhlington, competing against many other gymnastics clubs. For many of these boys, this was their first ever competition and they all performed superbly and showed the other clubs the quality of skill and talent being grown at the sports centre.

Models of London
Primary planters
Children at Westfield Primary School were asked to get creative about our capital city and they all went away to plan their models. The classroom was very quickly full fo fantastic models of the City of London. Freddie and Dean made a fabulous model of the London Eye and Ryan created some superb Lego models of the London Underground.
Tish and Andy Jeffery from Farrington’s have donated an unused piece of land to Farrington Gurney Primary School. This has given the school an amazing opportunity to create class allotments. All of the children in the school had the opportunity to design the allotment and now each class has their own section to plant however they wish. Years 5 and 6 have even started up an enterprise project called Primary Planters. They hope to sell their produce to raise money to improve the allotment even further. The whole school community is behind the project, with parents and grandparents offering practical help, and local companies providing plants and equipment (thanks again to Farrington’s and R. J. King). Learning is about so much more than just being in the classroom, as their mission statement shows. The children get plenty of fresh air and exercise whilst learning the skills needed to establish and maintain an allotment – true ‘life’ skills. Roberta (Year 6) - Primary Planters marketing department
Olympic torch Every child at Midsomer Norton Primary School was invited to make an Olympic Torch as a homework project. This picture shows some of the entries. One winner will be selected from each class and go through to the final which will be judged by a panel from Sainsbury’s regional managers. The winning torch will be carried by a runner on the last leg of the South West Sainsbury’s run from Frome to Midsomer Norton on Sunday 13th May. The standard is incredibly high!

PETS R E N COR My name is Hoppy and I am a domestic rabbit. I am not difficult to look after and I love playing with children. I live in a hutch in my owner’s garden and I have a covered in area where I can burrow into my straw and sleep comfortably at night. My hutch is nice and big so I can hop around during the day to get some exercise. I like to eat fresh greens and rabbit pellets too and my owner makes sure I have plenty of fresh water to drink every day, this helps to keep me healthy. I like to chew on things and my owner often gives me some hardwood toys to play with. These also help to keep my teeth clean and strong. My hutch gets cleaned every week and I get a chance to hop around the garden, which I love. While my hutch is being cleaned I also get groomed with a soft bristled brush, this makes me feel very special and I look forward to it every week. Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pets after cats and dogs and there are many different breeds of rabbit. Some of us can live for 8 to 12 years, a very long time. Some of my friends have been house trained and now live inside their owner’s houses! We are very intelligent animals and we can be trained with a little bit of patience and care we can be taught to respond to commands using reward based training. We are amazing animals and make fantastic pets.

Cheesy Chomp Biscuits To make about 15 biscuits you will need: 75g ( 3oz) mature Cheddar cheese 100g (4oz) plain flour 50g (2oz) butter The yolk from a medium egg 5 teaspoons of cold water A cookie cutter 2 greased baking trays Heat your oven to 190 C 375 F or gas mark 5 Put the flour into a large bowl with the butter cut into chunks. Mix together until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Grate half the cheese and add to bowl. Mix in the egg yolk and water in a small bowl. Reserve about 2 spoonfuls and add the rest to the flour mixture. Stir everything in well and squeeze the mixture until you have made a smooth dough, then make it into a slightly flattened ball. Wrap the dough in plastic food wrap and chill in a fridge for 30 minutes. Turn oven on. Remove dough from fridge and roll out onto flour sprinkled clean working surface. Roll until about 5mm (1/4in) thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Place onto lightly greased baking trays. Brush remaining egg mixture over the top of each shape and sprinkle with grated cheese. Bake biscuits for 12 minutes. Leave them to cool for 5 minutes, and then lift onto a wire rack to cool.

FATHER’S DAY Sunday 17th June
Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday of June. It is a day to honor fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts. There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link between the two. The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day.

Don’t be afraid to accessorise swimwear or beachwear. It can take the attention away from problem areas and big jewellery makes your body appear smaller. Apart from protecting your eyes, sunglasses are an instant confidence boost, adding allure regardless of what you’re wearing. Lastly, it’s always great to feel your best but as every woman obsesses about at least one part of their body. Remember this and then get on with enjoying yourself, it’s YOUR holiday!

Fingers Out This is a simple guessing game for which you just need two kids! Great for passing the odd waiting moment or car journey.
Age: Any
The children face each other and count to 3. On ‘3’ they put out one hand - either as a fist or with 1, 2 or 3 fingers extended, shouting out at the same time a number between 1 and 6. Add up the number of fingers extended. If a child guessed the exact number of fingers shown they score 2 points. If they guessed nearest the number of fingers shown, they score 1 point. If there is a tie, no points are scored. The first to a given number or points perhaps 5 or 10 - wins.
Cowtastic Farm Park
Cowosk
I Packed My Suitcase I Packed My Suitcase is a classic memory game which is useful for all sorts of occasions, from a doctor’s waiting room to a long car journey! You can adapt it to all ages of kids, and adults enjoy playing as much as children.
Age: 5+
The first player thinks of a word beginning with the letter ‘a’ and then says, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple”. The next player repeats the sentence and adds something beginning with ‘b’, for example: “I packed my suitcase with an apple and a banana”. The next player adds a word beginning with ‘c’: “I packed my suitcase with an apple, a banana and a canary.” Play continues until someone can’t remember the list or makes a mistake. Depending on their age, you can either prompt them or disqualify them! Keep going until all players but one are disqualified, or until you reach the end of the alphabet. Farrington’s, an award-winning farm shop and activity destination, is launching a brand new fun-filled outdoor Farm Park; encouraging kids of all ages to get active, learn lots and have fun! Featuring Farrington’s very own Gert the cow, Cowtastic Farm Park will be open to fun-seeking children from the 25th May and aims to be the perfect outdoor destination for young adventurers. Entry starts at just £2.50 per person for a family of 4 with unlimited play. Attractions include a farm style play area complete with Jeep, harvester, animal rockers and a tractor trailer slide, welly throwing, giant boot skittles, grass sledges and its very own fort. For all the animal loving children out there, Cowtastic Farm Park will also play host to a wide variety of farmyard animals, with Shetland ponies, pig, ducks, chickens and donkeys ready to make friends. Children visiting the Park can learn more about the animals, their welfare and care; as well being able to interact with them for an educational day out. The innovative ‘Cow-osk’ will be selling scrumptious snacks, drinks and pocket money gifts to complete a great day out. A special visitor on Saturday 26th May will be Tim Lerwill, author of the renowned Farmer Tim books. He will be reading stories from his series at 11am and 3pm in the Farm Park, as well as signing books which will be on sale at Farrington’s. A farm-themed Children’s Drawing Competition with prizes is also being held and full details can be obtained from Farrington’s Farm Shop. Cowtastic Farm Park will be open every at Farrington’s in Farrington Gurney, Bristol day (see www.farringtons.co.uk for times); and with plenty of other attractions on-site including a café, deli, bakery, plant nursery and gift shop, it’s the perfect day out for all the family!

Prior Park is a beautiful 18th century landscape garden, home to one of only four Palladian Bridges in the world. The garden is a great place to come for a family fun day out. We have regular activities on for children, including story telling in the summer house and our explorer tracker packs, available all year round, which give children the chance to discover the wonders of the garden. A soft toy Ribbon in your team’s or country’s colours Paper in your team’s or country’s (or design your own flag) Lolly sticks Safety pins (or fabric glue, or needle and thread) Sticky tape Print-out on card Start by creating a sash for your bear by making a loop of ribbon long enough to slip around your toy’s body (resting on one shoulder). Join the loop with either a safety pin, fabric glue or a couple of stitches. Make a hair band with another length of ribbon. Join the loop with either a safety pin, fabric glue or a couple of stitches. Cut out the badge and tape a safety pin to the back. Pin the badge on to the hair band. To make a flag, cut out a rectangle of coloured paper (or draw you own flag) and tape it to the lolly stick. Tape the flag to the toy’s hand.
We started by drawing the number 60 in gold pen on an A3 sheet of construction paper. The boys were then given a selection of crafty bits and pieces from which to choose. For a more complex collage you might to include photos of the Royal Family, palaces or state coaches, royal symbols such as crowns, sceptres, and even a corgi or two! You could also add Union Jacks and Commonwealth flags.

The Snorgh and the Sailor By Will Buckingham, 5+
The Secret Lake
Snorghs don’t share their soup, they don’t have visitors and they definitely don’t like adventures. However, when a bedraggled sailor turns up on his doorstep telling him stories of exotic lands, the Snorgh finds himself going on an adventure after all. By Karen Inglis, 7+ Stella and Tom, her younger brother, have moved to their new home in London. It’s not long before they become intrigued with their elderly neighbour’s dog Harry as he keeps disappearing and then returning wetthrough. Where does he go? The two children, over their summer holidays, embark upon a quest to solve this mystery. They soon discover a boat that has been buried and a tunnel that leads them to a secret lake. But who is the terrified boy rowing towards them and whose are those children’s voices coming from beyond the woods? Stella and Tom discover that they have travelled back in time to their house and gardens as they were one hundred years earlier. As the story unfolds, Stella and Tom uncover some startling connections between the past and the present.
The Emerald Atlas: The Books of Beginning By John Stephens, 9+ One frozen night, when the world was covered with a blanket of snow, Kate, Michael and Emma were taken from their beds. Ever since that night, Kate has been haunted by the silhouette of a tall, thin man. Ten years later, after spending time in a number of miserable orphanages and the memories of their parents now a blur, the children arrive at Cambridge Falls. However there is something strange about this place, Kate is sure she has seen the dark, crooked house before. As the children start to explore the house they discover an old, empty leather book. Upon touching the book an ancient magical prophecy is set in motion. This is a fantastic magical adventure story. The first thrilling book in the most exciting children’s fantasy series since Harry Potter!
