This year’s Christmas Lantern Fayre is testimony to the commitment of Midsomer Norton’s traders in partnership with Welton Baptist Church and many other community groups to put on a Christmas event regardless of the credit crunch! We couldn’t cancel Christmas could we, the show must go on! So we decided to return to the traditional Christmas story - and what better way than to put on a Nativity. But we didn’t just want any old Nativity - we wanted a world beating one for Midsomer Norton where everyone can take part rather than just be spectators. So we are preparing a community record-breaking bid to beat the Guinness Book of Records entry for the ‘Most Living Figures in a Nativity Scene’! The record is currently held by the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy, who managed to get 567 participants in their nativity at Sassi di Matera in Italy, on 29th December 2010. Surely we thought we can beat 567 participants? The only way we can break the record is for everyone - young and old - to join in this community effort to put Midsomer Norton on the map and enjoy a great evening for the whole family. We’re asking as many

people as possible to dress as shepherds and come on down and be counted. As well as the Nativity event, there will be the traditional lights switch on, children’s lantern procession, carols and the High Street shops will be opening late so everyone can have plenty of time to buy Christmas presents. And there is of course the fabulous annual competition with prizes to be won. A special thanks are due to this year’s organising committee consisting of Danny and Sarah Malik of Jacarandas, John Plenty of Edwards Opticians, Paul Myers with lots of his hats on, Matt Coomes and the Welton Baptist team. We hope you all have a fantastic night and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Chrismas Nativity scene would not be complete without the Shepherds. Making a Shepherd costume can be relatively easy. Materials Needed: • Any colour fabric • Contrasting fabric • Black elastic headband • Sandals • Rope • Walking stick • Toy lamb You don’t have to drag out the sewing machine, why not use items you have at home which can make just as an effective shepherd’s costume. All you need is an old sheet (or pillow case with holes for the arms to stick through) with a dressing gown cord around the waist and a tea towel on the head with a stretchy headband to secure it in place.

Simple Recruitment specialise in the provision of

Instructions: 1. The fabric will be used to create the dressing gown. Fold the fabric in half with the fold at the top. Draw the outline of the gown which should ideally have long sleeves and reach the ground. Cut out, leaving the top fold un cut. Sew together, leaving the arm holes and bottom open. Cut a semi-circle shape out of the top fold for the head to go through. 2. The other fabric will be used to create a head piece. Cut out a rectangluar shaped piece from the white fabric (tea towel sized) and wrap the black elastic around it to hold it in place. 3. The rope is used to cinch the waist of the robe in place. It should be rather long to hang in front. 4. The last pieces of the costume are the sandals, a curved walking stick and a toy lamb.

Housing Developers bring affordable Homes to Midsomer Norton Having been more than 3 years in discussion, design, planning and latterly, execution, the Guinness Hermitage affordable housing site off the High Street in Midsomer is virtually complete. Part of the site, now known as Bevington Close, will be offered for sale through the Shared Ownership scheme – a scheme where qualifying parties can part-buy and part-rent the properties. It is designed to make the purchase much more affordable for prospective buyers, typically saving over 30% per month on housing costs, compared to buying the same property outright. The Marketing & Sales team, Guinness Homes, will be handling the sales and they will have to ensure that, in the first instance, the properties are only sold to those people who have a local connection to Midsomer Norton. There will be five 2 bedroom houses available through the Shared Ownership scheme. Each will contain generous accommodation comprising: Sitting/dining room, fitted kitchen, bathroom and 2

good size bedrooms. Outside, each property will also have its own private garden and allocated parking. Additionally, these homes will benefit from ‘state of the art’, eco-friendly solar energy systems, making cost efficiencies and helping the environment at the same time. Julie Stafford, Head of Marketing & Sales for Guinness Homes said “We are very pleased to be working on this landmark site in Midsomer Norton, and to be helping to meet the high local demand for good quality, affordable housing. Local people have been able to watch this housing development taking shape and Guinness Hermitage is looking forward to welcoming the new residents to their homes.” Anyone interested in finding out more about the properties, which are due for completion shortly, should contact the Marketing & Sales team on 0844 800 2020, email sales@guinnesshomes.co.uk or look on our website www.guinnesshomes.co.uk

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night While shepherds watched Their flocks by night, All seated on the ground; The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around, “Fear not!” said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled minds. “Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind. “To you in David’s town this day, Is born of David’s line, The Saviour, who is Christ, the Lord, And this shall be the sign.”

“The heavenly Babe you there shall find, To human view displayed; All meanly wrapped in swaddling bands, And in a manger laid” Thus spake the Seraph, and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God, who thus Addressed their joyful song: “All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace. Good will, hence forth From heaven to men, Begin and never cease.”

According to folklore, the tradition of the Christmas Stocking dates back to the days of a kindly nobleman whose wife had died of an illness leaving him and his three daughters in despair. After losing all his money in useless and bad inventions the family had to move into a peasant’s cottage, where the daughters did their own cooking, sewing and cleaning. When it came time for the daughters to marry, the father became even more depressed as his daughters could not marry without dowries - money and property given to the new husband’s family. One night after the daughters had washed out their clothing they hung their stockings over the fireplace to dry. That night Saint Nicholas, knowing the despair of the father, stopped by the nobleman’s house. Looking in the window Saint Nicholas saw that the family had gone to bed. He also noticed the daughters’ stockings. Inspiration struck Saint Nicholas and he took three small bags of gold from his pouch and threw them one

by one down the chimney and they landed in the stockings. The next morning when the daughters awoke they found their stockings contained enough gold for them to get married. The nobleman was able to see his three daughters marry and he lived a long and happy life. Children all over the world continue the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings. In some countries children have similar customs, in France the children place their shoes by the fireplace, a tradition dating back to when children wore wooden peasant shoes. In Holland the children fill their shoes with hay and a carrot for the horse of Sintirklass. In Hungary children shine their shoes before putting them near the door or a window sill. Italian children leave their shoes out the night before Epiphany, January 5, for La Befana the good witch. And in Puerto Rico children put greens and flowers in small boxes and place them outside the front door.

Churches love Christmas and so at Welton we were already quite excited when the Chamber approached us to work as a team on this year’s Lantern Fayre. It was at the first meeting when somebody came up with the amazing idea of spicing up the Christmas Fayre by going for a World Record. It quickly caught everyone’s imagination, the new Midsomer Norton Town Council loved the idea and in just a few weeks the whole thing has snowballed into reality. With your help we want to create the fantastic sight of ‘The Most Living Figures in a Nativity Scene’. To break the record, currently 567 held by the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy, we are asking EVERYONE to come to the event dressed as a shepherd. Don’t be

sheepish, come on down and be a record breaker! We’ll set the scene and the adjudicators will begin counting whilst everyone sings some carols. One World record attempt isn’t enough for Midsomer Norton though! Our second effort will form part of our Candlelight carol service (18th December Somervale School 6pm). We’ll join people across the country to try and achieve over 15,000 voices simultaneously singing carols. Please see our website www.weltonchurch.org.uk for details of everything that’s going on (including the Pantomime in January). We’d love to see you! We are pleased to be supporting the Midsomer Norton Christmas Lantern Fayre “We would also like to wish all of our customers a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”

On the night before Christmas, all children will be tucked in their beds while “visions of presents dance in their heads.” When they awake they will check their stockings to see if Santa Claus has come. Santa Claus has become the most beloved Christmas tradition. The image of the jolly old elf flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeers and leaving toys and gifts for every child is known worldwide. The history of Santa Claus begins with a man called Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. Saint Nicholas was known for his charity and wisdom. Legends tell of him coming from a wealthy family and giving all his money to the poor. He also was said to posses magical powers. He died in 340 AD and was buried in Myra. Late in the 11th century religious soldiers from Italy took the remains of the saint back with them. They built a church in honour of him in the town of Bari, Italy. Soon Christian pilgrims from all over the world came to visit the church of Saint Nicholas. These pilgrims took the legend of Saint Nicholas back to their native lands. As the legend of Saint

Nicholas spread it would take on the characteristics of each country. In Europe during the 12th century Saint Nicholas Day became a day of gift giving and charity. Germany, France and Holland celebrated December 6th as a religious day and gave gifts to their children and the poor. When the Dutch colonists traveled to America, they brought with them their Sinterklaas, an austere bishop who wore a red bishop costume and rode on a white horse. The American image of Sinterklaas would gradually evolve into that of a jolly old elf. He was first described as a plump and jolly old Dutchman. In 1823 Sinterklaas/Saint Nicholas’ metamorphosis continued with the publication of Clement Moore’s poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the night before Christmas...). In the 1860s cartoonist Thomas Nast drew pictures of a plump and kindly Santa Claus. This image was becoming ingrained in the minds of people. As time went on this image of Santa Claus travelled across the globe.
