Mary
Create a tunic from blue material, or perhaps use an old, large blue pillowcase which can be slit at the bottom and sides to make a simple tunic. You can then add white or blue tights and simple sandals. Make a simple white headdress using a length of white material, secured to your child’s head with a length of white elastic or a headband. The obvious accessory is a child’s doll, swaddled in a blanket or towel, for your little Mary to carry.
Shepherd/Joseph Costume
One of the easier costumes to rustle up, the shepherds of Biblical days wore very simple clothing, so a basic, homemade tunic, perhaps accessorised with a leather belt, brown trousers and leather sandals combines to make an authentic take on the traditional shepherd’s dress. The most popular addition is the old striped tea-towel wrapped around the head. You could also come along as a star, an angel, a wise man or a stable animal, and the first prize for the best dressed child will be to switch on the Midsomer Norton Christmas lights.

Christmas Nativity Fayre Programme 2012 By popular request this year’s Christmas Nativity Fayre continues to build on last year’s fabulous World Record Breaking event. This year you can dress up as ANY character from the Christmas Nativity story and there will be a prize for the best outfit! We’re even running a workshop to make animal masks, nativity mobiles, kingly crowns or a nativity scene on Saturday 1st December in the Town Hall between 2.30pm and 4.30pm. There will also be a workshop in the Library between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on Friday 7th December. We’ve got a great evening planned including: • A Santa Bling Party at the Sport Centre Hall. • Christmas Market Stalls around the Hollies and craft fayre in the Methodist Church. • Fruit punch, soft drinks and mince pies in the Hollies Gardens to all those dressed as a nativity character. • The Silver Band will play carols and create the wonderful sound of Christmas. Nativity procession with Joseph leading Mary with a real live donkey will make their way to the Hollies, followed by school choirs and young people. The key to this procession will be its role in bringing items to donate
to the new Somer Valley Foodbank initiative – helping those in need not just at Christmas but the whole year around. • Christmas Lights Switch on by the young person in the best Nativity costume . • Unforgettable Nativity where you can watch in wonder as the story of the Christmas message you are actually part of unfolds before your very eyes. Many of the High Street shops will be opening late so everyone can have plenty of time to buy Christmas presents. And there is of course the fabulous annual competition with prizes to be won. We hope you all have a fantastic night and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The Organising Committee, Midsomer Norton Special thanks are due to this year’s organising committee consisting of the Chamber, Welton Baptist Church, Midsomer Norton Methodist Church, Somer Valley FM and Paul Myers with lots of his hats on.

Rich fruit ring cake
Serves: 18 Prep: 30 mins | Cook: 1 hour 30 mins
Ingredients 85 g (3 oz) dried cranberries 85 g (3 oz) sultanas 85 g (3 oz) dried pears, chopped 85 g (3 oz) stoned prunes, chopped 85 g (3 oz) dried figs, chopped 85 g (3 oz) stoned dried dates, chopped 250 ml (8½ fl oz) apple juice 50 g (1¾ oz) pecan nuts, chopped 50 g (1¾ oz) candied ginger, chopped finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 5 tbsp sunflower oil 1 egg 75 g (2½ oz) molasses sugar 115 g (4 oz) self-raising white flour 115 g (4 oz) self-raising wholemeal flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground mixed spice 3–4 tbsp semi-skimmed milk, as needed
Preparation method 1. Place all the dried fruit in a medium sized saucepan. Add the apple juice, place over a moderate heat and bring slowly to the boil. Cover and simmer gently for 3–4 minutes or until the fruit begins to absorb the liquid. 2. Remove the pan from the heat and leave, covered, until completely cold. Stir in the pecan nuts, ginger, and lemon zest and juice. 3. Preheat the oven to 150ºC (300ºF, gas mark 2). Brush a 23 cm (9 in) ring tin with a little oil. In a bowl, beat together the sunflower oil, egg and sugar until smooth. 4. Sift the white and wholemeal flours, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl, tipping in any bran in the sieve. Add the soaked fruit and the egg mixture, and stir well to combine
thoroughly. Stir in enough milk to make a fairly soft mixture. 5. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the top. Bake for 1¼–1½ hours or until risen, firm and golden brown, and just beginning to shrink away from the sides of the tin. 6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for at least 1 hour before running a knife around the edge and turning it out. Wrap in greaseproof paper and foil, and store for 2–3 weeks before serving, to allow the flavours to mature. 7. To decorate the cake, gently heat the jam with 1 tsp water, then press through a sieve. Brush the top of the cake with the jam. Arrange the cherries, nuts and candied ginger on top, pressing them gently into the jam. Finally, dust with sifted icing sugar.

O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight
How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, The dear Christ enters in.
For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the King And Peace to men on earth
O holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray Cast out our sin and enter in Be born to us today We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell O come to us, abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel

Children’s Craft workshop
This December Midsomer Norton Town Council is once again funding two afternoons of creative opportunity. The incredibly popular craft workshops are back. This year the crafts will be based around the Nativity story and you can join the team of volunteers from Welton Baptist Church for lots of fun. Come and make a special addition to your nativity outfit by creating your very own animal mask. Or you can colour in and make a nativity mobile to hang in your bedroom. There will also be the chance to make Kingly crowns or a beautiful manger scene. Parents/carers are asked to come and stay with your children and maybe have a go yourself. It’s free to take part but resources are limited so please come early if you want to be sure of a choice.

Welton Baptist Church Does Midsomer Norton really hold the Guinness World Record for the ‘Most Living Figures in a Nativity Scene’? Yes we do! (743 mainly shepherds/ shepherdesses to be precise!). And one year on despite an effort from the mighty city of Southampton, we have maintained the record. We’re not attempting any records this year but hopefully we can build on the growing sense of community within the Town. In the story of the nativity we see the outworking of God’s plan to give us the greatest ever gift in the form of His son, Jesus. With that thought of giving in mind, we really wanted people to have the opportunity to contribute something again this year. Whether it’s a gift for the food bank, joining in with the crafts, dressing up, singing the carols, joining the procession or any of the many other things on offer, we hope that you feel a valuable part of everything happening this evening.

It has been a privilege working together with so many organisations towards this event and to have the continuing support of the Town Council. Hopefully you will have seen details of all the forthcoming events taking place at the local churches. Why not take some time-out of the busyness of Christmas to join in and be a part of all that is going on. Finally, if you’re someone who suffers from the Post-Christmas blues, give yourself a lift at the church’s annual Pantomime, ‘Not Dick Whittington’ on January 25th & 26th see www.weltonchurch.org.uk for more details.
