BAMPTON, A VILLAGE AT HEART Bampton is Mid Devon’s gateway to Exmoor. It is a town by name but very much a village by nature. This charming Saxon town boasts several pubs and an old Motte and Bailey castle, with a number of quality independent shops for the size of the town including an award winning pub and bakery. It has a delightful village walk into unspoilt countryside with stunning views and a heritage centre. You can easily lose yourself for a day in Bampton! In 1268 it was granted a charter town and this history is amplified through their Charter Fair today, held each October on the last Thursday of the month. This celebration takes you back in time, with live folk music spilling out on to the busy streets and traders bellowing to crowds selling their goods. Exmoor ponies are a traditional visitor to the fair! Definitely one to visit! www.visitdevon.co.uk/mid-devon

HEYWOOD CASTLE, CHAWLEIGH To the north of Heywood wood and overlooking the River Taw valley stands the remains of a Motte and Bailey castle known as Heywood Castle. Re-take the steps of the Normans and discover this medieval castle. Made up of two parts, a raised mound, known as the motte which would have had a stone or wooden tower, known as the keep on top (the strongest and securest part of the castle) and an enclosed courtyard protected by a ditch, overlooked by the motte, known as the bailey. Once you have discovered this gem through the woods, why not take a rest in one of Chawleigh’s two country pubs for a spot of lunch. www.visitdevon.co.uk/mid-devon

PLYMOUTH - A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST Steeped in history, there’s a lot to delve into in Plymouth - a city shaped by its past. Immerse yourself in a wondrous world of exploration as you walk in the footsteps of adventurers and explorers who strolled the streets of Plymouth in years gone by. The Barbican is Plymouth’s historic heart, with listed buildings round every corner. Visit the Mayflower steps to see where the Pilgrims departed in 1620 for America, and pay a visit to the Mayflower Museum to learn more about their journey.

Then enjoy a walk along the Hoe, where legend says Sir Francis Drake played bowls as he received news of the Spanish Armada’s arrival. Along the Promenade, you’ll also find several war memorials, the largest being the Plymouth Naval Memorial, commemorating over 23,000 lives lost during the two world wars. Work in Plymouth is currently ongoing to create The Box, a contemporary ‘museum for the future’, which will open in 2020. In the meantime, the museum’s collections are going on tour to different venues around Plymouth. www.visitdevon.co.uk www.visitplymouth.co.uk

DOG-FRIENDLY DEVON We all know it isn’t a family holiday if the fourlegged members of the family get left behind, luckily, Devon is a great place for anyone looking for a dog-friendly holiday, so if your dog deserves a break too, you’re in the right place! Whether you want to be by the beach or in the middle of nowhere, you’ll find lots of great places to spend time with your dog. Many of the beaches in the region have special sections for dogs to enjoy, while others lift restrictions at certain times of the year.

Every beach in the area has its own regulations, some allow unlimited freedom to dogs, while others welcome them as long as they are on leads. Wherever you are, you’ll find that dogs are allowed in some way on virtually every beach, but each one will be clearly sign posted and your accommodation provider will be able to point you to the beach that best suits you. If the beach isn’t really your style, there are many opportunities to enjoy the glorious country side with walking trails all over the county for you and your dog to explore.

attractions welcome dogs, including the theme parks and the various railway companies, such as the steam railway and the tramway. Each of the individual attractions have their own rules and regulations, but the majority of them have some kind of provision for dogs, whether that’s letting them have free reign or whether they have a dog-friendly area, so your pooch can make friends while you enjoy yourself. Devon is also home to a whole host of National Trust places that welcome dogs, some of them even sell dog biscuits and other treats in their cafés!

There are miles of walks and trails that allow dogs to roam free, including the South West Coast Paths and the various walking trails through Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks.

And speaking of food, many of Devon’s pubs and cafés have a reputation for being dog friendly, allowing dogs inside and offering alfresco dining. When you’re at the coast, be sure to look out for the cafés along the beach which have dog friendly ice cream to go with the complimentary water that is left out for them!

Staying in Devon with your dog isn’t a problem either, many of the accommodation offering dog friendly stays are set in the middle of the countryside with plenty of space for them to explore. You’ll even find that some of them pamper your dog more than you, offering their own version of spa treatments, beds and special treats! You don’t have to spend all your time out and about if you don’t want to, several of Devon’s top www.visitdevon.co.uk

MID DEVON - BUZZARDS WOODLAND - OFF THE BEATEN TRACK This tranquil woodland in the Dart Valley is well worth exploring. Otters, dormice and rarer bat species are known to be living here, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a sighting of one of these fantastic creatures. In the spring, the woodland floor becomes a carpet of beautiful bluebells. Managed by Knightshayes (National Trust) this woodland is cared for to conserve the woodland and its habitats. To discover the woodland you need to cross bridges, steep hills and unsteady footing, so bear this in mind – it really is off the beaten track. There are two viewpoints which can be found from the car park, so everyone can enjoy the stunning views. GRAND WESTERN CANAL The Grand Western Canal is an attractive stretch of isolated canal that winds its way through the soft rural landscape of Mid Devon. Enjoy a pleasant meander through this beautiful part of the world. Declared a Country Park in 1971 and a Local Nature Reserve in 2005, the Canal offers a profusion of wildlife and scenic landscape as well as fascinating heritage with many of its original features and buildings still surviving to tell the Canal’s 200 year story. Extending for eleven and a quarter miles, the Canal is the perfect place for walking, cycling, boating, fishing and picnics. Bird-watchers can enjoy spotting a range of bird species including waterfowl, kingfishers and hedgerow birds. The breathtaking landscape of Exmoor’s National Park spans out miles upon miles of protected moorland, brimming with wildlife. It’s also home to some of the darkest stretches of sky in the country - which is why a section of it has become Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve.

The park is an amazing place for stargazing, with specific reserves, beacons and observatories dotted along its route. You can partake in the unique experience of a star safari, or even stay in specific dark sky accommodation to enhance your trip. PLYMOUTH- GET OUT ON THE WATER You won’t be surprised to learn that the best way to appreciate Plymouth – known as Britain’s Ocean City - is from the water. Whether you’re an experienced seafarer or haven’t quite found your sea legs yet, there’s a chance for everyone to enjoy the breath taking beauty of Plymouth Sound. The Mount Batten Centre gives the opportunity to try new activities, including windsurfing, dinghy sailing, Stand up Paddle boarding and kayaking. There’s nothing as lovely as being out on the water on a sunny day with a gentle sea breeze – but don’t take our word for it, try it out yourself! Alternatively, hop on board a harbour cruise with Plymouth Boat Trips; you can sit back, relax and enjoy the view. Plymouth is also a treasure trove for divers, with more wrecks per mile of coastline than anywhere else in the country and the Eddystone reef, which is said to be one of the best diving sites in the south of England. www.visitdevon.co.uk www.visitplymouth.co.uk

BREATHING SPACE Did you know that more than a third of Plymouth is covered in green space? The city’s parks and nature reserves will provide you with a spot where you can relax and enjoy some breathing space. Nestled in the heart of the busy Barbican you’ll find a gentle oasis of calm in the Elizabethan Gardens. Sit on the stone benches and rest your legs for a while – you can almost imagine that you’ve travelled back in time. If you want to feel like you’ve escaped to the countryside then just a 20 minute drive from the city centre sits Saltram House. Imagine yourself in Jane Austen’s era; this magnificent National Trust owned Georgian mansion featured as Norland Park in the 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. Walk and explore the 500-acre estate where you’ll find a remarkable range of different habitats, including saltmarshes, meadows, woodland and an estuary. If breath taking coastal scenery is more your thing, hop on a ferry from Plymouth over to Mount Edgcumbe to explore the grounds of this incredible country house and park by the sea. Try your hand at Segwaying across the park, visit one of the many spectacular events or simply stretch your legs on the South West Coast Path that runs through the grounds. www.visitdevon.co.uk www.visitplymouth.co.uk www.visitdevon.co.uk

SPECTACULAR VIEWS The landscape of Dartmoor is dominated by granite outcrops forced up through the Earth’s crust by volcanic activity. These outcrops are known as Tors and they are surrounded by the bleak high open moor, fields and woodlands. Dartmoor is constantly changing colour with the seasons- light green in the Spring with the freshly sprouting vegetation, lush green in the Summer and the the yellow and purple hues of the gorse and heather in the Autumn. The landscape is always interesting whichever season you choose to visit in and the wildlife is abundant throughout the year and a pleasure to watch. The iconic Dartmoor ponies can be found across the moor accompanied by the Dartmoor Black Faced sheep helping to preserve the unique landscape by grazing the invasive species. www.visitdevon.co.uk

EAST DEVON DIVERSITY OF WILDLIFE East Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers much of the area’s landscape. It is a protected area due to the diversity of the wildlife, with many rare and endangered plants and animals calling it home. Set within the East Devon AONB, there are several local nature reserves which welcome visitors, stop off at one of them when exploring the area for a chance to see a whole host of amazing wild creatures in their natural habitats, as well as a chance to see some of the area’s most beautiful scenery. East Devon has many water ways that can be explored by boat or by following the paths alongside them, which gives another opportunity to enjoy the diverse ecology of this area. These waterways cut through almost undisturbed countryside creating some amazing valleys such as the Exe and the Axe where wildlife and interesting plant life are rife. www.visitdevon.co.uk/east-devon

VIEWS, WILDLIFE, HERITAGE & CULTURE The East Devon AONB is said to have been created over 250 million years, the area consists of everything from small wooded areas, to river valleys, hill tops, heathland and of course, the stunning villages. As the AONB covers so much of the region, you’ll be sure of a fantastic view wherever you go regardless of the time of year you visit. Coming in the summer will see the heathlands in flower, while visiting in the winter will give you a chance to see nests created by hibernating creatures, such as squirrels as they prepare for the spring. If views, wildlife and places with a focus on heritage and culture are on the top of your list for a holiday destination, then you should definitely head to East Devon. www.visitdevon.co.uk/east-devon

BIG Devon Events

We may be known for peace, tranquillity and natural beauty ...but we also know how to put on a world-class event here in Devon. There are fantastic Devon events going on across the county every day of the year - but some stand out as our biggest crowd-pleasers, drawing people in their thousands. Whether you’re into music, food, sport, culture or spectacular displays of fireworks and planes you’ll find a big event to tempt you down to Devon. Take a look at our rundown of some of Devon’s biggest events or visit www.visitdevon.co.uk/whats-on to find many more.

BIG music

Throughout the year there’s lots going on for music fans across Devon - see www.visitdevon.co.uk/whats-on for more information. But those that draw the biggest crowds include: Goldcoast Oceanfest (June) - three days of waterfront music and beachsports in Croyde; MTV Crashes Plymouth (July/August) - two days of live chart-topping music and entertainment on Plymouth Hoe; Beautiful Days (August) - a 16,500 capacity family-friendly weekend festival at Escot Park, managed by the Levellers; and watch out for international artists performing at Exeter’s Westpoint venue and Powderham Castle throughout the year.

BIG fireworks Every year in August Plymouth’s waterfront is the scene of the jaw-dropping British Fireworks Championships. This spectacular two-day programme of displays start at dusk, but from early evening there’s also music, entertainment, stalls and a funfair on Plymouth Hoe.

BIG food festivals Devon’s a huge draw for foodies, so it’s unsurprising that some of the UK’s biggest and best annual food festivals happen here. Look out for the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink around Easter, Plymouth’s Flavourfest in June, and the Dartmouth Food Festival, North Devon Foodfest and Powderham Food Festival all in October.

BIG county show The Devon County Show is of course a highlight of the calendar - it’s three days of farming, food and fun in May.

BIG flaming tar barrels For reasons lost in antiquity, every year on November 5 huge flaming tar barrels are carried through the streets of Ottery St Mary – and thousands turn out to see this quite uniquely Devon spectacle.

BIG sports Devon has a huge array of sports events throughout the year. Some of the biggest include regattas such as the Royal Dartmouth and Royal Torbay, national and international rugby fixtures at Sandy Park, home of Exeter Chiefs, and the Tour of Britain cycle race, which draws huge crowds when it passes through Devon.

BIG book festivals Look out for the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival and Appledore Book Festival, both of which welcome celebrated authors and personalities during September/October.
