Think of Somerset and what comes to mind - stunning views across open countryside, sandy beaches, superb strawberries, Cheddar cheese and cider? World-wide, our County is famous for its Glastonbury Festival, illuminated carnivals, Mulberry handbags and Arthurian Legends. There is more! This guide is here to help you discover more of what this amazing county, one of the largest in the UK and largely rural, has to offer. Whether this is your first visit, whether you return to us year after year or whether you live in Somerset, we are sure there will be surprises among these pages and ideas that will lead to some unforgettable experiences and lasting memories.

2

As we said, Somerset is a big place and its boundaries have changed over the years. For this guide, we include the magnificent City of Bath over in the east; our National Park, Exmoor in the west; the historic town of Crewkerne on the boundary with Dorset in the south and Portishead, the northern most point on the Somerset Coast. Not content with a National Park, we have four Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To ease navigation through this guide and the County, we have divided it into four – north, west, south and east. These do not follow administrative districts but in a County of such contrasts, it should help you plan your visit by describing the different character of each and what there is to see and do. The pages that follow give you an overview of each area and a taste of what’s on offer with a map on the centre pages so you can plot your journey to take in a number of different attractions if you wish. We think you will be surprised at the variety of landscape, architecture and culture to be found. From coastal cliffs and sandy beaches to moorland; from cityscapes to village greens and from arts festivals to agricultural shows – Somerset really does have it all.

The area we call the North can boast three stunning showcaves that are open to the public, four seaside piers, Britain’s biggest gorge and England’s smallest City. Just a short hop from the M5, not far from Bristol International Airport and with excellent rail links, this part of the County is crammed with family attractions from places to see exotic creatures and natural wonders to a theme park and shopping village. At the same time as offering all this excitement, there are plenty of opportunities to slow down and contemplate the miles of unspoilt countryside and panoramic views.

As the name suggests, the Somerset Levels and Moors are flat but far from uninteresting. They are fascinating! They offer a rare glimpse into our earliest attempts at managing the land. From the various ‘mumps’ and ‘knolls’ - these were islands in the days when this area was under water for many months of the year - there are extraordinary views. Glastonbury Abbey

Brean Splash Waterpark

Much of the scenery is grassland, criss-crossed by ditches (or rhynes as we call them) and lined by our famous willows. The Moors were worked for peat and this is where you’ll find the world’s oldest known track way which our ancestors used to navigate the swamps. Today the roads lead to charming towns, villages, cafes and craft shops.

This part of Somerset is steeped in myth and legend. When Alfred the Great was defending his people from Vikings he hid on the Levels and allegedly burned some cakes! Glastonbury is associated with King Arthur’s stories and to see its Tor rising from the mists is to understand why. Joseph of Arimathea is said to have visited Glastonbury and where he put his staff in the ground it grew into a thorn tree. Bishop’s Palace, Wells

Don’t miss: Avalon Marshes, Glastonbury Abbey, Chalice Well, Rural Life Museum, Brean Down, Brent Knoll, Abbot’s Fish House, Ashton Windmill, King John’s Hunting Lodge, Tyntesfield.

Warren Farm Holiday Centre

Miles of sand, donkey rides, candy floss and entertainment on tap keep people coming back to our seaside resorts year after year. Whether you stay in a caravan park, hotel or B&B, you are sure of a warm welcome. Both Weston super Mare and Burnham on Sea have their own theatres and piers while Brean has a theme park with roller coaster rides and ghost train.

Cheddar Gorge The Town Crier in Wells

Inland there are plenty of options for a great day out from Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm where you can meet elephants to Rich’s Cider where you can sample our famous beverage made the traditional way. We are spoilt by having not one network of amazing caves full of incredible and ancient rock formations but several! We have Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge, both of which have much more for you to see and do than merely admire the majesty of nature. Wookey Hole has over 20 amazing attractions including Circus Shows and Cheddar takes you on a journey back in time to meet the primitive people who lived there once.

North

They say small is beautiful and that is certainly true when it comes to England’s smallest city. Wells has a fabulous cathedral, remarkable old clock, swans that ring for their food, a moated Bishop’s Palace, historic market place and the oldest residential street in Europe.

Wells Cathedral

The Bishops Palace, Wells

Willows and Wetlands

Glastonbury Tor

With the reed beds of the peat moors, the salt marshes and sand dunes of the coast, the re-introduced cranes on the Levels and the rare butterflies of the Mendip Hills, Somerset is one of the best places for wildlife in Britain with more than 100 reserves.

Somerset gives you the opportunity to wander in a park or garden, on beautiful lawns and around manicured beds. You also have the chance to follow our extensive network of public rights of way through woods, fields, across moors and along our shores. We have plenty of longdistance trails or circular walks if you are feeling energetic and a number of our towns and villages are accredited Walkers Are Welcome destinations, so look out for the stickers and ask for details of the guided walks. Don’t forget we have three wonderful ranges of hills and a National Park to explore. These special areas give you the chance to walk for days!

South Somerset Route and Strawberry Line. You might prefer the challenge of mountain biking and once again we don’t disappoint. The Quantocks offer some of the best trails in the South West. The mainly rural nature of our County makes it an obvious choice for horse-riding whether you bring your own or visit one of the stables or riding schools. Something you won’t find in many counties is the chance to ride on a beach but you can do that all year round at Brean and Berrow. Talking about the coast, there is good sea fishing to be had at a number of our resorts with the Bristol Channel being favoured by flounder, bass and conger. Our lakes and rivers are full of fish with good weights recorded regularly for the likes of trout and carp. Staying with water, there is the new sport of Coasteering to be considered alongside the old favourites of sailing, kayaking and kite Golf is another way to stretch your legs and with more than 40 clubs, Somerset might be the place to surfing. One of the joys of a visit to the seaside is to roam among the rockpools looking for creatures give it a try. Seasoned golfers will tell you that we have an impressive variety of venues including links, that make them their home. parkland and lakeside. Staying with rocks, we are fortunate to have the If you prefer two wheels as your way of getting incredible Cheddar Gorge where you can learn to about then you’re in luck. We have long flat paths on climb or hone your skills. We are not just talking the Levels and Moors as well as some well-known about how high you can go. You can venture down cycle routes - The Stop Line Way, Colliers Way, underneath the cliffs and go caving.

In a County as big and beautiful as Somerset it can be said that the journey is as important a part of the experience as the destination. If that journey is by train or bus you have the added luxury of being able to sit back and enjoy the view. We have one of Britain’s greatest achievers to thank for the rail link between London and Somerset. Isambard Kingdom Brunel, that giant of the industrial revolution, was responsible for the Great Western Railway (GWR) - also known as the Holiday Line for opening up the West Country’s seaside resorts to visitors. Rail travel is enjoying a Renaissance in the UK and billions of pounds are being spent by GWR marking the biggest investment since Brunel’s time. Improvements are being made to the network, the fleet and the stations. Among the stations to have benefitted is Taunton, which has a welcome for visitors that befits

it status as our County Town. Another station scheduled to be refurbished is Bridgwater which will remain faithful to Brunel’s original design. A real treat for the traveller is to take the train from Paddington to Taunton and dine in style on a Pullman Carriage - choosing from a menu of West County ingredients and enjoying silver service – and all the while keeping an eye on the hills, vales, villages and waterways that fly by.

comfort with washrooms and refreshments onboard. A warm Somerset welcome awaits passengers and their drivers and we were delighted when one of our seaside resorts, Burnham on Sea, became the first destination in the South West to achieve ‘Coach Friendly Status’ from the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK. Somerset really is easy to reach whether you fly in to Bristol Airport or travel by coach, train or bus. Once here you can access Information Centres and websites for helpful hints on finding your way around. One of Britain’s largest bus operators, First Bus, covers the County taking more than 54m passengers on its Bristol, Bath and The West Service. It also operates Park & Ride services in the County Town, Taunton.

South Somerset

Although much may have changed in terms of buying tickets online and internet access in carriages, what has hardly altered is the variety of vistas available from the comfort of your seat. In Somerset the contrasts are dramatic as you pass by market towns and meadows; through wooded valleys and willow trees. As well as travelling across the County by rail you can travel back in time as Somerset boasts several heritage railways including the longest in England – the West Somerset Railway. This 20-mile line takes you from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead through charming village stations and offering magical views of the Quantock Hills, the coast and even a castle. The East Somerset Railway runs through the Mendip Hills and the Somerset and Dorset Railway is based at Midsomer Norton. Somerset is a popular destination for coaches - they have been coming west since the first services began in the 1920s between London and Bristol. Today there are a number of companies bringing visitors into the County daily as well as offering excursions to our many attractions and events. Coach travel too has come a long way since the days of horse drawn stage coaches, even though some of the wonderful coaching inns remain. Now we can sweep through the countryside in air-conditioned

Minehead Harbour

Taunton

Moving West, we leave the Levels for the rich Vale of Taunton with the beautiful Blackdown Hills and Quantock Hills on either side before we come to our National Park, Exmoor, one of the UK’s finest landscapes. One of the best ways to travel here must be the marvellous West Somerset Railway – the longest heritage railway in England. You can ride from just outside Taunton all the way to Minehead passing immaculately maintained stations, signal boxes, a castle and a harbour. The countryside is sumptuous and it is easy to see how it inspired some of this Country’s greatest poets. Dunster Castle

A castle sits proudly atop the medieval village of Dunster which is packed full of listed buildings and places to visit. Now owned by the National Trust, the castle had been in the same family for 600 years. It is surrounded by gardens and has a stable block, working water mill and underground reservoir to explore. Also overlooking the village is a tower used as a landmark for shipping while in its centre is the splendid tiled Yarn Market. Visitors are spoilt for choice with shops, restaurants and walks aplenty in this delightful, historic village.

Walking in the woods

Taunton

On Exmoor woodland meets the sea in places and the result is dreamlike. You can lose yourself in valleys that might not look out of place in epic tales such as Lord of the Rings, with mossy banks, waterfalls and ancient trees. It is here too that you will find Britain’s highest sea cliffs and the dramatic Valley of the Rocks. Inland and on higher ground you will cross a landscape of an altogether different character - remote and wild. These moors are home to the famous Exmoor Ponies and Red Deer. They are also the backdrop to the fictional Lorna Doone whose echoes can be found in tearooms, shops and the real life Oare Church.

Exmoor’s remoteness makes it a prime place to stargaze and the co-operation of a number of organisations led to it becoming Europe’s first Dark Skies Reserve. One of the best sites is Wimbleball Lake as the water reflects the starry glory. In daylight, the reservoir offers sailing, rowing, walking and bird-watching.

Exmoor ponies

A drive along the Exmoor coast is rewarded with breath-taking views and picturesque stops including Porlock Weir where they are once again growing oysters. Minehead is the largest resort with Butlins Holiday Camp on the seafront and North Hill rising above the harbour. Tucked between the National Park and Quantock Hills we have gems such as Old Cleeve Abbey, the port of Watchet, which inspired the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Wiveliscombe.

Somerset Cricket Club, Taunton

There has been a settlement on the banks of the River Tone since Saxon times and as befits a largely rural county, Taunton is a typical market town. The livestock may have moved out but there is an award-winning Farmers Market every Thursday. Barges no longer transport goods along the canal from Bridgwater but there is an imaginative Space Walk on the towpath and the riverside has been given over to gardens. Taunton is not only the administrative centre, it also houses the Museum of Somerset and is a focus for arts, culture, sport and shopping.

The museum records the last acts of this Country’s Civil War when the infamous Judge Jeffery held his Bloody Assize in the Great Hall of Taunton Castle sentencing 500 rebels to death or transportation. The town’s sky line is dominated by not one but two church towers, one of which St Mary’s at 50m high, has been described as the finest in England. The church towers can be seen from the ground of Somerset County Cricket Club, which has hosted international matches and is the home of the England Women’s Cricket Team. Another sport enjoyed here is national hunt racing with the course at Orchard Portman staging around 15 meetings each season.

The Somerset Carnivals are highly regarded as the largest illuminated processions in the world. The processions of illuminated floats are part of an ancient tradition, which stretches back as far as the 1600’s when many parts of Somerset commemorated the Gunpowder plot. They truly are unique to the West Country and they are an attraction that must be seen. The carnival procession runs along the Wessex Grand Prix circuit, on to the South Somerset Federation Carnivals circuit, and ends on the largest Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival Association circuit. The Somerset County carnivals are one of the most spectacular events in Somerset today, and Bridgwater carnival regularly attracts crowds of 150,000 people. The floats are driven by farm tractors, and usually tow a large generator to provide the huge amount of power required to light the float. Some generators used can provide over one megawatt of power, with 10,000 to 30,000 lamps not uncommon. The tractors themselves are often decorated to match the rest of the float and generator. The floats are often interspersed with walking exhibits, either groups or singles, occasional marching bands or majorette troupes, and charity collectors who take donations from the spectators. Some of the acts and costumes of these performers can be just as impressive as the floats Carnivals run through September, October and November every year, for the dates and venues visit www. somersetcarnivals.co.uk. So, pick a date, wrap up warm, put plenty of pennies in your pocket for the charity buckets and go and have a fun night.

We hope this brochure gives you an idea of what to expect when you come to Somerset for your holiday It’s produced by the Somerset Tourism Association, a Community Interest Company run by the tourism trade to make it easier for you to come to Somerset and more enjoyable for you while you’re here. There are about 3,000 businesses and several local authorities involved in tourism in the historic County of Somerset, and we all want you to have a good time. You can drive down for the day, or just turn up and look around, but it’s best to book accommodation for your stay before you arrive. You can check out attractions, restaurants and so on as well. There’s plenty of information on the internet, including our own website www.visitsomerset.co.uk, and a list of TICs below. Some TICs aren’t open all year, so you may need to try more than one. There are several accreditation schemes which accommodation providers can join if they wish. There are symbols on some adverts to show if a provider belongs to a scheme. Many choose not to join these schemes, but all accommodation in this brochure is licensed to operate by the appropriate local authority. As publishers, we accept adverts in good faith as being accurate at time of going to press, and we can’t take responsibility for any inaccuracies or changes which may emerge. Main front cover photo: A fabulous shot of a family enjoying the sand dunes at Brean. The stretch of sand between Burnham-onSea and Brean Down is the second longest in Europe and includes eight beaches. It is clearly a draw for beach lovers as the campsites and parks that serve it together make up one of the largest concentrations of caravans on the continent! Inside front cover photo: Nestling on the West Somerset / North Devon border, Exmoor is rich in hidden haunts, deep valleys, ancient oak woodland, England’s highest sea-cliffs, sparkling rivers and waterfalls. Its landscapes and seascapes are dotted with medieval towns, villages, harbours and resorts full of character and timeless charm. Many people have helped us put this brochure together. The gently rolling hills of this part of Somerset and the golden stone have created some of the most sought after locations for a cottage in the country or even a stately home. It is the place to come if you enjoy historic homes, manicured gardens and impressive parish churches. Not to be left out, the South has its own Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Blackdown Hills, as well as its fair share of the Levels and Moors with their characteristic willows and wildlife. It is dotted with medieval market towns and charming villages and has several notable museums.

With such rich soil, it is no surprise there is a thriving local food culture with many new small-scale food and drink businesses springing up here. Somerset has a network of more than 8500 farmers and food producers, the largest in the UK. With regular farmers’ markets, farm shops and cafes there are plenty of opportunities to try ciders, cheeses and other treats made just round the corner. Not to be missed is the Brown and Forrest Smokery where you can sample the finest smoked eel.

When it comes to grand displays, this area has two of international importance. The largest

Haynes Motor Museum Yeovil

naval aviation collection in Europe is based at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, near Yeovil while Haynes International Motor Museum houses the UK’s biggest exhibition of cars from around the world. On a smaller scale but no less fascinating is the Montacute TV Radio Toy Museum. A relative newcomer to the area is the worldclass gallery Hauser and Wirth at Bruton with its landscaped garden, contemporary art and acclaimed eating place. A little longer established are one of the country’s best known glass blowers Will Shakespeare and potter John Leach, grandson of the potter Bernard Leach.

South Somerset

Somerset has always attracted creative people whether they have chosen to write about its charms or been inspired to paint, pot and weave. Our native crafts are on show for all to see in the form of thatched roofs, neatly laid hedges and baskets made of locally grown willow. You can watch some of these skills at several of our attractions such as The Willows and Wetlands Visitors Centre.

Some of the finest historic houses and gardens in England can be found in this part of Somerset. Fans of costume drama are sure to recognise a number of our architectural gems as film and TV producers are spoiled for choice here. We have Elizabethan Montacute House which boasts the longest Long Gallery in England, now hung with more than 60 portraits of the period. It featured in the TV series ‘Wolf Hall’ and the extensive grounds were used for jousting and the Royal Tent. Montacute is owned by the National Trust as is the delightful Barrington Court, a Tudor manor house with a garden inspired by Gertrude Jekyll. Then there is Lytes Cary, a medieval manor house which has been lovingly restored and is now also cared for by the National Trust. All have plenty to entertain the whole family.

History lovers will relish Muchelney Abbey where you can still see parts of the decorated cloister walk and the only complete thatched monk’s lavatory in England! There is something of interest for all ages. It is not just great or historic houses that are listed in these parts, gardens can be too and one of the finest is East Lambrook. A cottage garden, it was created by plants woman and author Margery Fish. Another small but beautifully formed garden is that at Tintinhull, with its Pool Garden created as a memorial to a WW2 fighter pilot. England is the most garden-loving country in the world with more gardens open to the public than anywhere else and Somerset certainly doesn’t disappoint on this score.

Holborne Museum, Bath

If the other areas on our map have landscapes protected for their natural beauty, the one we refer to as the East has a City so beautiful it has UNESCO World Heritage status. Naturally hot springs that were known about even before the Romans tapped into them make it the ultimate place for a spa break.

Midsomer Norton

While Bath’s prosperity sprang from its waters, other parts of this area had grown rich on wool in the Middle Ages when British wool ruled the world! It is thanks to sheep that we have fine towns such as Frome and Shepton Mallet.

With a reputation spanning the centuries for fashion, it is no surprise that Bath has long attracted retailers – both house-hold names and independents. Many have prime sites in the centre but it is worth exploring the side streets, Artisan Quarter and the new Southgate Centre. If it is labels you’re after, the award-winning Kilver Court Designer Village in a former textile mill at Shepton Mallet is a real gem and the town is also home to the Mulberry Factory Shop. Nearby Frome, picked out by The Times as one of the ‘Best Places to Live in Britain’ is jam packed with shops, many of which you won’t find anywhere else. It attracts thousands of visitors to its monthly mini festival of local produce.

The Fashion Museum, Bath

St Johns Church, Frome

Norton St Philip

Steeped in history as this area is, there are plenty of places where you can learn more about it. The Fashion Museum Bath, founded by a designer, has a world-class collection of dresses through the ages. Holburne Museum was the City’s first public art gallery and has paintings by Gainsborough, Stubbs and others. You might be surprised to know we also have the only museum of American decorative and folk art outside the United States. Travelling further back in time you can visit Farleigh Hungerford near Frome dating from the 14th century but now in ruins with an impressive collection of lead coffins. Of similar age, Nunney Castle built by John de la Mare is also a ruin yet retains some magic as it has a moat. While you are out that way you can visit Mells, a little village that is big on history, tracing its origins to Mesolithic times. Mere straplings, being neolithic, the stone circles at Stanton Drew are the third largest in England but not a lot of people know that! Off the beaten track, these incredible prehistoric arrangements rival the better known Avebury and Stonehenge. There are several Iron Age hill forts such as the one at Maes Knoll, near Bristol.

The Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet

Two Roman villas have been discovered in Keynsham, one of them is said to be the grandest in Britain, and more dwellings from that time have been brought to light on the Keynsham Hams.

While natural mounds rise up from the Levels of central Somerset, it is the man-made variety that will surprise you here – spoil heaps from the mines of the Somerset Coalfield. Believe it or not, there were almost 80 collieries in 1901 around the town of Radstock. Spoil from the Writhington Mine is a site of Special Scientific Interest as it contained more than 1400 insect fossils. An old pit winding wheel dominates the centre of the town outside the awardwinning Museum which is where to go to learn all about this fascinating period of the area’s past. Midsomer Norton is another town that grew on the strength of its coalmines, the last of which only closing in the 1960s. Farleigh Castle, Norton St Philip

One of the greatest figures in the Industrial Revolution, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was chief engineer of the Great Western Railway, on a salary of £2000 a year, linking London to the West via Bristol and Bath. It was known as the ‘Holiday Line’

as it brought so many people to resorts such as Minehead. He has left a legacy of buildings, bridges and stations along the route. If you want to know what connects elephants with coal in Somerset the answer is the artist David Shepherd, best known for his paintings of elephants who bought two steam engines in 1967 with nowhere to put them. They found a home at Cranmore where there is now a short stretch of heritage railway. When Scientists announced they had found similarities between rocks on Mars and those at Watchet on the West Somerset Coast, some of us were not surprised. We know our coast is out of this world! Any walk along our shores is, in a way, a walk back in time whether it’s a reminder of the Victorian love affair with the seaside or a chance to wonder at the extraordinary geology. Now, thanks to the opening of a new stretch of the England Coast Path, it is possible to walk almost the entire length of the Somerset coast – from Brean Down to Minehead – hugging the shore for most of it.

Burnham on Sea

Weston super Mare’s Grand Pier is an indoor theme park with its own trains and the town also offers traditional donkey rides, sandcastles and aquarium. The smallest pier in the UK is claimed by Burnham on Sea. Its beaches are part of a six mile stretch of sand beginning at Brean where we

pick up the coast path. Berrow boasts ecologically important dunes. Not surprisingly there are numerous holiday camps and caravans here. The coast path heads on down the River Parrett into Bridgwater and back out towards the sea via the newly created Steart Marshes. The character changes from flat and sandy to steep and rocky, capped by the spell-bindingly beautiful wooded cliffs of Exmoor. Along the way we have skipped through Kilve with its fossils, Dunster with its castle and the pleasure gardens of Minehead, hopefully catching sight of a steam train, an oyster catcher or a lighthouse.

Let’s start our tour at Portishead, once a small fishing port and now a modern marina with waterfront apartments. Moving south, Clevedon became a resort during the golden age of rail and has a pier described as the most beautiful in England.

Apple orchards, cider and cheese this is what usually springs to mind when thinking of Somerset and its most famous produce. Indeed, many Somerset locals still make their own cider from the apples in their own orchards or in the community. A number of smaller producers have entered the market, with a couple of ‘big names’ available in large supermarket chains across the UK. Cheddar cheese is the most famous dairy product, some of them ripening in the caves at Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole.

Farmers markets and food festivals across Somerset are celebrating the best produce our county has to offer, freshly picked and processed in small cottage kitchens. Not many people realise that around Cheddar it certainly is strawberry fields forever: bright red, juicy fruit is sold fresh from the fields, smelling of summer and long, lazy days. Recently another product has been added to the Somerset larder: oysters were re-introduced to Porlock Bay in West Somerset, hopefully soon a staple on local restaurant menus.

A product not usually associated with Somerset is wine: Oatley Vineyard close to the Bristol Channel near Cannington has won many international awards since the vineyard was established over 25 years ago. Somerset is home to many small restaurants and gastropubs who aim to serve as much locally grown produce as possible. Two restaurants in the county hold a Michelin star, and in the Taste of the West 2016 Awards, Clavelshay Barn in the Quantocks has been nominated the Number One restaurant to visit in England’s South West. Last but not least, there is one more thing which, though not always associated with Somerset, needs to be mentioned: Cream teas. Traditionally served the Somerset way, with jam on top of the clotted cream crowning home-made scones, they can be enjoyed in many tea gardens, overlooking the gentle, rolling countryside of rural Somerset or hiding in warm, cosy tearooms away from the hustle and bustle of busy towns.

Remember, wild creatures are very shy and dont like people being too close to them, so try not to disturb them. It‛s also very important not to leave any litter in the countryside so please remember to take food and rubbish home or put it in a bin. Happy wildlife spotting!

Did you know? Beach litter is one of the biggest concerns for our coastline. Not only is it unpleasant to see on our beaches it also threatens our marine life as they can mistake the litter for food or get tangled up in it. Always remember to; • Take your picnic food home with you or find a nearby bin and recycle what you can. • Don‛t feed the seagulls as it encourages them to dive and snatch food which can be dangerous.

Why not take part in a beach clean! Visit www.litterfreecoastandsea.co.uk/somerset to find a beach clean near you.

Please keep Somerset tidy and safe for everyone, especially for our wonderful wildlife!
