Something for everyone in Somerset Sometimes we struggle when we try to sum up Somerset. It is so varied. There are beach resorts, market towns, quaint villages, hills and moors, woodlands and wetlands. When it comes to culture, we are crammed with it from world class music festivals and galleries to ancient buildings and mysterious legends. As for food and drink, who hasn’t heard of our cider, strawberries and cheese? We think we have everything you need for a truly memorable visit and hope you will use this guide to discover more of what our amazing County has to offer. Whether this is your first time, whether you return year after year or whether you live here, we are sure there will be surprises among these pages and ideas for some unforgettable experiences. Somerset is a big county and its shape has changed a few times over the years. As Visit Somerset, we include the beautiful City of Bath to the East and our National Park, Exmoor over in the West. We have our fascinating coast along the Bristol Channel to the North and in the South, a corner of Cranborne Chase, one of our four Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
2
To aid navigation, we have divided this guide into four sections – north, west, south and east. These do not follow the administrative boundaries but in a place of such contrasts, we thought it might help you plan your visit if we described the different characters of each area and what you can see and do there. These pages will give you a taste of what’s on offer in each area with a map on the centre pages so you can plot your journey and take in as many attractions as you wish. There are castles and caves, museums and moors, palaces and piers – as we said, something for everyone!

Exploring the North The area can boast three stunning showcaves that are open to the public, four seaside piers, Britain’s biggest gorge and England’s smallest city. Just a short hop from the M5, not far from Bristol International Airport and with excellent rail links, this part of the County is crammed with family attractions from places to see exotic creatures and natural

BESIDE THE SEASIDE The northern end of our coast is where you will find the sand and lots of it. You can picnic on it, build castles out of it, watch artists make spectacular patterns and sculptures with it, walk dogs, ride horses and play games on it. You can wander among the Berrow dunes and admire the wildlife. These shorelines, with their views across the Bristol Channel and its islands, have been attracting holiday makers for several hundred years and the draw of the amusements, bandstands, ices and fresh air is as strong as ever.
ON THE LEVELS As the name suggests, the Somerset Levels and Moors are flat but far from uninteresting. They are fascinating! They offer a rare glimpse into our earliest attempts at managing the land. From the various ‘mumps’ and ‘knolls’ these were islands in the days when this area was under water for many months of the year - there are extraordinary views.

Much of the scenery is grassland, crisscrossed by ditches (or rhynes as we call them) and lined by our famous willows. The Moors were worked for peat and this is where you’ll find the world’s oldest known track way which our ancestors used to navigate the swamps. Today the roads lead to charming towns, villages, cafes and craft shops.
This part of Somerset is steeped in myth and legend. When Alfred the Great was defending his people from Vikings he hid on the Levels and allegedly burned some cakes! Glastonbury is associated with King Arthur’s stories and to see its Tor rising from the mists is to understand why. Joseph of Arimathea is said to have visited Glastonbury and where he put his staff in the ground it grew into a thorn tree. Glastonbury Tor

So Much To Do Miles of sand, donkey rides, candy floss and entertainment on tap keep people coming back to our seaside resorts year after year. Whether you stay in a caravan park, hotel or B&B, you are sure of a warm welcome. Both Weston super Mare and Burnham on Sea have their own theatres and piers while Brean has a theme park with roller coaster rides and ghost train. Portishead Marina
The Plume of Feathers in Rickford
Inland there are plenty of options for a great day out from Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm where you can meet elephants to Rich’s Cider where you can sample our famous beverage made the traditional way. We have Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge, both of which have much more for you to see and do than merely admire the majesty of nature. Wookey Hole has over 20 amazing attractions, including Circus shows, and Cheddar Caves takes you on a journey back in time to meet the primitive people who lived there once.

Get Active in Somerset
Walking definitely has to be on the agenda in a County that has more than 3,700 miles of public rights of way. You can wander in parks and gardens or ramble through woods and fields. Several of our longer paths are promoted as trails such as the England Coast Path, Coleridge Way and River Parrett Trail. In fact so popular is walking here that we have a number of towns and villages accredited as ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ destinations so do look out for the stickers and ask for details of the guided walks.

If you prefer two wheels for getting about then you’re also in luck. There are long flat paths across the Levels and Moors and well-known Cycle Routes like the Stop Line Way, Colliers Way, South Somerset Route and Strawberry Line. For Mountain Bikers, the Quantock Hills offer some of the best trails in the South West.

Golf is another way to stretch your legs and with more than 40 clubs. Seasoned golfers will tell you that we have an impressive variety of venues including links, parkland and lakeside courses.
Somerset’s mainly rural nature makes it an obvious choice for horse-riding whether you bring your own or visit one of the riding schools. Something you won’t have in many counties is the chance to ride on a beach but you can do that all year round at Brean and Berrow. There is good sea fishing to be had at a number of our resorts with the Bristol Channel being favoured by flounder, bass and conger. Our lakes and rivers are full of fish with good weights recorded regularly for the likes of trout and carp.

For the adventurous among you, we are fortunate to have the incredible Cheddar Gorge & Caves where you can learn to climb, hone your climbing skills or head underground for some caving. Wild Wookey at Wookey Hole offer the chance to try abseiling, climbing and crawling. The relatively new sport of Coasteering is taking off here alongside sailing, kayaking and kite surfing.

Somerset Coast Rocks ! When Scientists announced they had found similarities between rocks on Mars and those at Watchet on the West Somerset Coast, some of us were not surprised. We know our coast is out of this world!
Any walk along our shores is, in a way, a walk back in time whether it’s a reminder of the Victorian love affair with the seaside or a chance to wonder at the extraordinary geology. Now, thanks to the opening of a new stretch of the England Coast Path, it is possible to walk almost the entire length of the Somerset coast – from Brean Down to Minehead – hugging the shore for most of it. Let’s start our tour at Portishead, once a small fishing port and now a modern marina with waterfront apartments. Moving south, Clevedon became a resort during the golden age of rail and has a pier described as the most beautiful in England. Weston super Mare’s Grand Pier is an indoor theme park with its own trains and the town also offers traditional donkey rides, sandcastles and aquarium.
20
The smallest pier in the UK is claimed by Burnham on Sea. Its beaches are part of a six mile stretch of sand beginning at Brean where we pick up the coast path. Berrow boasts ecologically important dunes. The coast path heads on down the River Parrett into Bridgwater and back out towards the sea via the newly created Steart Marshes. The character changes from flat and sandy to steep and rocky, capped by the spell-bindingly beautiful wooded cliffs of Exmoor. Along the way we have skipped through Kilve with its fossils, Dunster with its castle and the pleasure gardens of Minehead, hopefully catching sight of a steam train, an oyster catcher or a lighthouse.

Wandering Out West Taunton Town Centre
Moving West, we leave the Levels for the rich Vale of Taunton with the beautiful Blackdown Hills and Quantock Hills on either side before we come to our National Park, Exmoor, one of the UK’s finest landscapes. One of the best ways to travel here must be the marvellous West Somerset Railway – the longest heritage railway in England. You can ride from just outside Taunton all the way to Minehead passing immaculately maintained stations, signal boxes, a castle and a harbour.

CAPTURED BY THE CASTLE A castle sits proudly atop the medieval village of Dunster which is packed full of listed buildings and places to visit. Now owned by the National Trust, the castle had been in the same family for 600 years. It is surrounded by gardens and has a stable block, working water mill and underground reservoir to explore. Also overlooking the village is a tower used as a landmark for shipping while in its centre is the splendid tiled Yarn Market. Visitors are spoilt for choice with shops, restaurants and walks aplenty in this delightful, historic village.
ROMANTICALLY INCLINED The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a leading light in the Romantic Movement, wrote some of his best work while living in Nether Stowey. He and his friends William and Dorothy Wordsworth walked almost daily for miles over the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor, admiring the moors and combes and immortalising them in verse. Today you can follow in his footsteps by taking the Coleridge Way from the National Trust owned Coleridge Cottage to Lynmouth on the other side of the Somerset border. Tarr Steps

Red deer on Exmoor
Exmoor and More On Exmoor, woodland meets the sea in places, and the result is dreamlike. You can lose yourself in valleys that might not look out of place in epic tales such as Lord of the Rings, with mossy banks, waterfalls and ancient trees. It is here too that you will find England’s highest sea cliffs and the dramatic Valley of the Rocks. Inland and on higher ground you will cross a landscape of an altogether different character - remote and wild. These moors are home to the famous Exmoor Ponies and Red deer. They are also the backdrop to the fictional Lorna Doone. 24
Kayaking on Wimbleball Lake
Exmoor’s remoteness makes it a prime place to stargaze and the co-operation of a number of organisations led to it becoming Europe’s first Dark Skies Reserve. One of the best sites is Wimbleball Lake as the water reflects the starry glory. In daylight, the reservoir offers sailing, rowing, walking and bird-watching.
WEST
MINEHEAD, EXMOOR, TAUNTON AND THE QUANTOCK HILLS
A drive along the Exmoor coast is rewarded with breath-taking views and picturesque stops. Tucked between the National Park and Quantock Hills we have gems such as Old Cleeve Abbey, the port of Watchet, which inspired the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Minehead, Porlock Weir and Wiveliscombe.
OUR COUNTY TOWN Taunton is a typical county market town. The livestock may have moved out but there is an award-winning Farmer’s Market every Thursday.

Sit Back and Enjoy the View In a County as big and beautiful as Somerset it can be said that the journey is as important as reaching your destination. If that journey is by train or bus you have the added luxury of being able to sit back and enjoy the view.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, that giant of the industrial revolution, was responsible for the Great Western Railway (GWR) - also known as the Holiday Line which opens up the West Country’s seaside resorts to visitors. Rail travel is enjoying a Renaissance in the UK and billions of pounds are being spent by GWR, the biggest investment since Brunel’s time. A real treat for the traveller is to take the train from Paddington to Taunton and dine in style on a Pullman Carriage - choosing from a menu of West County ingredients and enjoying silver service.

In Somerset the contrasts are dramatic as you pass by market towns and meadows; through wooded valleys and willow woodlands. West Somerset Railway is a 20-mile line taking you from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead through charming village stations and offering magical views of the Quantock Hills, the coast and even a castle. Somerset is a popular destination for coaches - they have been coming west since the first services began between London and Bristol in the 1920s. A warm Somerset welcome awaits passengers and their drivers and we were delighted when one of
our seaside resorts, Burnham on Sea, became the first destination in the South West to achieve ‘Coach Friendly Status’ from the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK. Somerset really is easy to reach whether you fly in to Bristol Airport or travel by coach, train or bus. Once here you can access Information Centres and websites for helpful hints on finding your way around. One of Britain’s largest bus operators, First Bus, covers the County taking more than 54m passengers on its Bristol, Bath and The West Service. It also operates Park & Ride services across the country.

Somerset’s Illuminated Carnivals
Somerset’s illuminated carnivals are highly regarded as the largest illuminated processions in the world. The processions of illuminated floats are part of an ancient tradition, which stretches back as far as the 1600’s when many parts of Somerset commemorated the Gunpowder plot.
The Somerset County carnivals are one of the most spectacular events in Somerset today, and Bridgwater carnival regularly attracts crowds of 150,000 people.

Here To Help We hope this brochure gives you an idea of what to expect when you come to Somerset for your holiday It’s produced by the Somerset Tourism Association, a Community Interest Company run by the tourism trade to make it easier for you to come to Somerset and more enjoyable for you while you’re here. There are about 3,000 businesses and several local authorities involved in tourism in the historic County of Somerset, and we all want you to have a good time. You can drive down for the day, or just turn up and look around, but it’s best to book accommodation for your stay before you arrive. You can check out attractions, restaurants and so on as well. There’s plenty of information on the internet, including our own website www.visitsomerset.co.uk, and a list of TICs below. Some TICs aren’t open all year, so you may need to try more than one. There are several accreditation schemes which accommodation providers can join if they wish. There are symbols on some adverts to show if a provider belongs to a scheme. Many choose not to join these schemes, but all accommodation in this brochure is licensed to operate by the appropriate local authority. As publishers, we accept adverts in good faith as being accurate at time of going to press, and we can’t take responsibility for any inaccuracies or changes which may emerge. Do check with the advertiser before you book or buy. When you’ve done your homework, all you have to do is enjoy your holiday!

THE BLACKDOWNS
Blackdowns
Rightly described as the ‘beautiful Blackdowns’, these hills have provided shelter as far back as the Iron Age, and evidence of hill forts, castles and World War II airfields remains. The highest point is Staple Hill and there are deep valleys and springs. It is sparsely populated with no towns ! The land is mainly used for pasture, making it popular with walkers and nature lovers. Among the highlights are Otterhead Lakes and Nature Reserve famed for its wildflowers; Neroche Forest; Ferne Animal Sanctuary and the Wellington Monument.
Somerset has a thriving network of more than 8,500 farmers and food producers, the largest in the UK. With regular farmers’ markets, farm shops and cafes there are plenty of opportunities to try ciders, cheeses and other treats made just round the corner. Not to be missed is the Brown and Forrest Smokery where you can sample the finest smoked eel.

Creative Charms Somerset has always attracted creative people, whether they have chosen to write about its charms or been inspired to paint, pot and weave. Our native crafts are on show for all to see in the form of thatched roofs, neatly laid hedges and baskets made of locally grown willow.
Lytes Cary
Haynes Motor Museum, Yeovil
When it comes to grand displays, this area has two of international importance. The largest naval aviation collection in Europe is based at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, near Yeovil, with Chard being recognised as the birthplace of powered flight. While Haynes International Motor Museum houses the UK’s biggest exhibition of cars from around the world. The area is home to one of the country’s best known glass blowers Will Shakespeare and renowned potter John Leach.

HOMES AND GARDENS
Picture postcard
Some of the finest historic houses and gardens in England can be found in this part of Somerset. Fans of costume drama are sure to recognise a number of our architectural gems as film and TV producers are spoiled for choice here. We have Elizabethan Montacute House which boasts the longest Long Gallery in England. It featured in the TV series ‘Wolf Hall’ and the extensive grounds were used for jousting and the Royal Tent. Montacute is owned by the National Trust as is the delightful Barrington Court, a Tudor manor house with a garden inspired by Gertrude Jekyll. Lytes Cary is a medieval manor house cared for by the National Trust. History lovers will relish Muchelney Abbey where you can still see parts of the decorated cloister walk and the only complete thatched monk’s lavatory in England ! It is not just great or historic houses that are listed in these parts, gardens can be too and one of the finest is
East Lambrook. A cottage garden, it was created by plants woman and author Margery Fish. Another small but beautifully formed garden is that at Tintinhull, with its Pool Garden created as a memorial to a WW2 fighter pilot.

Enchanting East Kilver Court Gardens
If the other areas on our map have landscapes protected for their natural beauty, the one we refer to as the East has a City so beautiful it has UNESCO World Heritage status. While Bath’s prosperity sprang from its naturally hot springs, other parts of this area had grown rich on wool in the Middle Ages. It is thanks to sheep and the wool trade that we have fine towns, such as Frome and Shepton Mallet. 43 X

MORE TO BATH THAN WATER Visitors from all over the world flock to the Roman Baths. One of Northern Europe’s finest historic sites, it is remarkably preserved and wonderfully presented following a multi-million pound redevelopment. It is still possible to experience bathing in the hot, mineral rich waters.
The Bath and West Show, Shepton Mallet
As well as bubbling up in springs, water in Bath also flows under Pulteney Bridge, one of only four in the world with shops across it on both sides. Bath has had many well-known residents, perhaps the most famous being Jane Austen, who has a centre in a Georgian town house dedicated to her.

Keynsham
The Kennet and Avon canal
With a reputation spanning the centuries for fashion, it is no surprise that Bath has long attracted retailers – both house-hold names and independents. It is worth exploring the side streets, Artisan Quarter and the new Southgate Centre. If it is labels you’re after, the award-winning Kilver Court Designer Village in a former textile mill at Shepton Mallet is a real gem and the town is also home to the Mulberry Factory Shop. Nearby Frome, picked out by The Times as one of the ‘Best Places to Live in Britain’ is jam packed with shops, many of which you won’t find anywhere else. Both Keynsham and Midsomer Norton have bustling High Streets too where you can enjoy a unique shopping experience with independent retailers amongst the cafe’s and eateries.

Holborne Museum
Museums & Monuments East Somerset is steeped in history and there are plenty of places where you can learn more. The Fashion Museum Bath, founded by a designer, has a world-class collection of dresses through the ages. Holburne Museum was the City’s first public art gallery and has paintings by Gainsborough, Stubbs and others. You might be surprised to know Bath also has the only museum of American decorative and folk art outside the United States. Travelling further back in time you can visit Farleigh Hungerford near Frome dating from the 14th century but now in ruins with an impressive collection of lead coffins. Of similar age, Nunney Castle, built by John de la Mare, is also a ruin yet retains some magic as it has a moat. While you are out that way you can visit Mells, a little village that is big on history. The neolithic stone circles at Stanton Drew are the third largest in England, but not a lot of people know that ! These incredible prehistoric arrangements rival the better known Avebury and Stonehenge.
Nunney Castle
There are several Iron Age hill forts such as the one at Maes Knoll, near Bristol.

Prior Park Bath
Two Roman villas have been discovered in Keynsham, one of them is said to be the grandest in Britain, and more dwellings from that time have been brought to light on the Keynsham Hams.

Somerset Coalfield Life Museum, Radstock
Spectacular walking and cycling country awaits you in this area with a variety of routes to choose from, both on and off the path with good public transport links available. Visit the diverse attractions on offer, from Radstock Museum to a lavender farm and a trekking centre to a steam railway and a flooded quarry diving centre. While natural mounds rise up from the Levels of central Somerset, it is the man-made variety that will surprise you here – spoil heaps from the mines of the Somerset Coalfield. Believe it or not, there were almost 80 collieries in 1901 around the town of Radstock. Spoil from the Writhington Mine is a site of Special Scientific Interest as it contained more than 1400 insect fossils. An old pit-winding wheel dominates the centre of the town outside the award-winning Somerset Coalfield Life Museum, which is where to go to learn all about this fascinating period of the area’s past. Midsomer Norton is another town that grew on the strength of its coalmines, the last of which closed in the 1960s. The town has so much to offer the visitor including beautiful churches, independent shops and a beautiful High Street.

The Colliers Way traces the route of old railways and quiet lanes, this relaxing and mainly traffic-free environment is excellent for walking and cycling, with large sections suitable for wheelchair users and some where horse-riding is allowed. Somerset has some nationally known brands who are selling their varieties far and wide. Although you can have a cider almost anywhere, there is something quite special about sampling it close to where it is made, especially if you have the chance to watch the process. You can take a tour of Myrtle Farm where the Thatcher family has been making cider since 1904 or you can spend time at Torre Cider Farm with its shop and tea room. You can also visit the museum at Sheppy’s Cider where there is also a bar and restaurant. If you favour hops over apples then you’ll be pleased to hear you’re never far from a good honest pint and that the County has a growing number of breweries - some well-known, others quite tiny. To find out how a fine brew comes about, you can arrange a visit to Butcombe Brewing Co. A great accompaniment to your cider or ale is Cheddar cheese enjoyed around the world and the good news is that it is still made in the village and matured in the caves. What many people may not realise is that Cheddar is renowned not only for its caves and cheese but for its strawberries. Once there was a Strawberry Line so named because of the volumes of these beauties it took by train to London. They and many other delicious local fruit, vegetables and home-made goods can be found at the many Farmers’ Markets and Food Festivals. The Strawberry Line now offers a beautiful walk through fields and orchards.
WELCOME TO OUR CIDER FARM
Pop into our shop at Myrtle Farm where you will find our full range of ciders...
Recent additions to the Somerset larder are oysters which have been re-introduced to Porlock Bay where they are now farmed. Also perhaps not often associated with Somerset is wine but we have some award-winning producers such as Oatley Vineyard at Cannington. Somerset is home to many small restaurants and gastro-pubs, who aim to serve as much locally grown produce as possible. Finally don’t miss our version of a West Country Cream Tea which can be enjoyed in the many gardens, tea rooms and cafes across the County.
...or join us at the Railway Inn for some delicious food and a friendly atmosphere.

WINCANTON RACECOURSE THE RACING HEART OF YOUR COMMUNITY 2017/18 SEASON FIXTURES NOW ON SALE
People have been attracted to the shelter of rocks, protection of hill tops and produce of rich pasture from the earliest days and have left behind a variety of clues to their lives in the forts, castles, abbeys and country houses – all waiting to be explored. A County with such history and heritage is bound to support a number of museums, but a bonus in Somerset is the sheer variety of the exhibits with everything from racing cars and fighter planes, willow baskets and posh frocks to pitch forks and cider presses, ancient skeletons and desert boots. Somerset is becoming one of the most important places for wildlife in the UK with reclaimed peat works on the moors and coastal wetlands attracting some of our rarest birds. The newly opened stretch of the England Coast Path offers fascinating walks, and the range of terrain inland makes Somerset a popular choice for cyclists.
