WELCOME Hello and welcome to the May Half Term issue of Family Matters! After the Easter holidays and the weeks leading up to it were filled with snow and Arctic conditions, I’m sure we’re not the only ones looking forward to a bit more sunshine and nicer weather! With many of you starting to plan out your Whit Week and Bank Holiday activities, make sure to flick through to our What’s On section to see what is happening in the area to keep the kids (and you!) amused over the next few weeks. With the warmer weather under way, many of us will be reaching for the anti-histamines and the tissues, so be sure to check out our top tips for helping the allergy suffers in your house hold – they don’t have to miss out on the Summer fun because of runny eyes and sniffly noses! This issue is jam packed with features, advice and of course, all the achievements and news from our local schools, so make sure to grab yourself a cup of tea and find a nice sunny spot to sit and enjoy!

Whitsun Half Term Fun at The Bishop’s Palace 26th May – 3rd June 2018 The Bishop’s Palace will continue its hugely popular season of Holiday Family Activities this Whitsun Half Term with a week of family fun from 26th May-3rd June. The focus for Half Term will be ‘A Bishop’s Life’ and a new family picture trail will be created around the Palace & Grounds, with clues for all ages to follow to discover different areas of the site. On Monday 28th May, from 10:30am-3pm children can join in our Make-it Monday craft session in the Undercroft, where they can discover the answers to questions such as ‘What does a Bishop do? What do they wear? Where do they live?’ and they’ll get the chance to design a cope, make an origami mitre or work on a Bishop puppet! If they decide to head upstairs, the Palace dressing up
box will give them a chance to try dressing up as a Bishop themselves. On Friday 1st June, Nature Ninjas family gardening sessions will take place from 11am-3pm, when little ones can take the opportunity to get hands on with the Palace gardening team and discover what jobs need doing at this time of year outside – there are also minibeasts to hunt and a perfect pool for pond-dipping. There will also be a range of children’s garden games adjacent to the café so that any accompanying grown-ups can have a coffee break in peace whilst the children try their hands at Giant Jenga, Snakes & Ladders, Connect Four and even Mini-Croquet! All events are included with standard admission. Children under 5 are FREE.

TRAVELLING POST-BREXIT
If you’re anything like us, you’re probably bored of hearing about Brexit and the various horror stories attached to it, but for anyone who is looking at booking next year’s summer holidays, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration. While there has been some stink kicked up about the status of passports in recent news articles, firstly about their colour, then where they were printed and when the public would get them and if it would mean existing passports would suddenly be invalid, not much time has been dedicated to other important elements of travel. The need for VISAs for instance, what to do about your EHIC cards and what will happen in regards to flight disruptions if agreements over airspace aren’t reached by the time the summer rolls around. The UK government has confirmed that new blue passports will begin being issued in October 2019, to save the tax payer money, they will be introduced slowly with burgundy passports continuing to be issued just without reference to the European Union in the interim and anyone with existing passports need not do anything until their renewal date, when they will then be issued with the newer design. It is the travelling itself that may cause a bit more concern. Travel Weekly reported that airlines based in the UK are drawing up contingency plans for passengers whose bookings are for after March 2019, as although these might be booked in advance, there is no guarantee that they will be able to travel. The warning applies to all tickets sold to EU destinations and up to 17 other countries where UK airline’s flight rights are controlled by European agreements. Though it is unlikely
that existing arrangements would change too drastically, any future aviation deals between the UK and the EU could result in increasing costs or entirely new routes. Some travel agents have already altered their terms and conditions to take into account holidays leaving the UK for Europe after March 2019, so if you’ve booked next year’s holiday or are preparing to, make sure to check these carefully. At the moment, the future of travel will be unable to be guaranteed until aviation arrangements are confirmed. Particularly anyone booking a non-package holiday should check these carefully to ensure they wouldn’t be left in limbo as they wouldn’t be covered under the Abta scheme. If that wasn’t enough to be thinking about, the European Union are working on a VISA scheme, similar to that used in the United States, the scheme, currently known as the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, or ETIAS, is a system in place for citizens of non-EU countries who do not currently need VISAs as part of their continuing projects to tighten borders. Users will need to register their details and intentions online before they travel, but doing so still may not guarantee they will be admitted into the country they want to visit. More details on VISAs and the ETIAS will be made clear when more negotiations are made, but certainly anyone with holiday plans in place should check the small print and keep their eyes peeled for news on EHIC coverage and changes to passport control. If you have any worries about travelling next summer, speak to your travel agent or holiday provider.

SUMMER SCHOOLING A School Holiday Childcare Solution? As the summer holidays approach, you might be starting to worry about what you’re going to do with the kids over the weeks while your life continues as usual. Do you rope in relatives to keep them out of trouble? Use up your valuable holiday time? Have you considered looking into a local summer school? Many organisations and educational facilities hold courses during the six-week holiday and though the idea of staying at school out of term time might not be as appealing to your child as it is to you, there are many benefits to enrolling in these classes.

Many summer schools, such as theatre or dancebased ones involve physical activity, which will cut down the amount of time your kids are sat indoors on computers or in front of a TV. Aside from the fact that it gets you out of arranging adult supervision for them, it will give them a chance to engage with something they’re interested in with other people their age and ensures that there will be some form of exercise going on. Of course, it also gives the opportunity to develop their talents and social skills. As well as keeping them active, summer schools are great at helping build confidence and independence. Some courses are catered especially for their academic ability, meaning they’ll have the opportunity to shine and give them the freedom that isn’t often afforded while at school.

There are several summer schools taking place across the region, you might be surprised just what activities are on offer. Whether your children are academic, arty or sporty, there is something for everyone and the benefits are numerous. Aside from giving them a safe area to learn while having fun, research has found that children who attend summer schools are more likely to get into competitive universities, and the benefit is greater for children from lower income families. Don’t forget though that summer schools are actually fun!

If you’ve ever experienced hayfever, you’ll know that the months of March through to September are a blur of sneezing, itchy eyes and runny noses. While the best way to tackle symptoms will always be with anti-histamines, there are a few other things we can do to make things easier for those family members who are prone to pollen allergies. People with additional conditions, such as asthma or skin irritations, may find that these start to play up with the warmer weather too. If at any point you’re concerned about a family member’s hayfever, do seek the advice of a GP, as they can prescribe stronger anti-histamines or steroids to help combat the more extreme allergies. For those of us who pop a pill or spray a nasal spray and hope for the best, here are a few tips that can help you enjoy being outside in the sun. The first bit of advice would be to avoid going outside. But we all know that isn’t that exciting. So, here are some things you can do without shutting yourself away until Autumn. Firstly, keep windows and doors shut as much as possible, and be sure that if you have pets which go between indoors and out, anyone with allergies spend minimal time with them, as pollen can be collected on their coats. Make sure you’re vacuuming regularly to pick up any stray pollen, dusting with a damp cloth will also help. If you’re leaving the house, you can put Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen and prevent it from causing too much of a reaction, when you get home, you can shower and change your clothes to wash as much pollen from you as possible. Wearing wraparound sunglasses will also help stop pollen getting to your eyes. Another tip would be to dry clothes inside rather than out, to limit the amount of pollen they can pick up. It is also recommended you get a pollen filter fitted in your car, most newer cars come with this already in place, but older vehicles might not – check your manufacturer’s book and if you feel you need one, speak to a local mechanic.

With Oscar-winning short film, The Silent Child, starring six-year-old Maisie Sly, from Swindon, shining the spotlight on deafness and the ways in which sign language can be life changing in helping young people communicate, we thought now would be as good a time as any to teach a few signs. You might be familiar with a few different types of sign language. Makaton is a language developed to combine speech and signs and is used effectively across the country by a multitude of individuals who struggle with spoken communication, it can be helpful for not only the hard of hearing, but also children with autism, Down’s Syndrome and other conditions which make communication difficult. BSL, or British Sign Language, makes use of space and movement involving the hands, body, face and head to convey more complex sentences without the use of verbal support. Both BSL and Makaton feature similar signs and gestures – here are a few of our favourite signs to get you started!

What not to say to a Stay at Home Dad
Society is constantly evolving and with more awareness of changing of traditional family roles, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see a dad doing the school run rather than a mum, but for some reason, there is still an element of shock when you hear about a stay at home dad instead of a mum giving up her career to watch the children before school. So, should you come across one of these dads in the playground or when dropping your child off on a play date, we’ve compiled a list of things you should never say them.

News and Reviews MAKING BIRD'S NESTS
ELMHURST SCHOOL VISITS NORMANDY
Having watched these busy birds just outside our their classroom, the children from Holly class children from Evercreech Church of England Primary School have started making their own bird's nest as part of their creation for the Bath and West conservation display. As you can see they are working very hard at their creations.
Pupils from Elmhurst School had a brilliant trip to Albert Sweitzer School in Gravenchon, France. The weather was very kind to them, they didn’t have to wear rain coats and they had lots of sunshine. The children had a great time experiencing a day in a French school taking part in sports activities with the children from Albert Sweitzer and getting a taste of French life. The market was popular and the visit to the bakery was really interesting, the children had a go at helping to make baguettes. The group were really well looked after with excellent meals, the staff and members of the twinning committee couldn’t have been more helpful. The school are now looking forward to the French children who will be visiting in June.
ST ALDHEM’S SCHOOL WELCOMES NEW HEADTEACHER St Adlem’s C of E School, Doulting, has announced that Pippa Cohen has been appointed as the new headteacher and will be taking up the post from September. In a newsletter she said: “It is with great excitement that I have accepted the offer to be Headteacher of St Aldhelm's C of E School. I am very much looking forward to taking up the post in September and working with governors, staff, children and parents. I have 21 years of teaching experience in South Gloucester, B&NES and Somerset, including the last 7 as a senior leader and, most recently, deputy head. I have lived in Somerset with my husband and 2 daughters for over 11 years and am delighted to have found such an incredible opportunity close to home. I love the St Aldhelm's school environment and have seen some wonderful teaching taking place during my visit to the school recently. The children are a real credit to the school, staff and parents who support and nurture them. I can't wait to get started in continuing to grow everything that is good about the school, to make it the most exceptional place to provide the foundation for every child's future.”

EVERCREECH PUPILS ATTEND GYMNASTIC FINALS Years 1 and 2 and Years 5 and 6 gymnasts from Evercreech Church of England Primary School attended the South Somerset Primary Schools Gymnastics Finals. Both teams did fantastically well, Years 1 and 2 won, making them the County Champions and our Year 5 and 6 gymnastics came 3rd in the County. Both of these were fantastic achievements. A big well done for both of these amazing results.

5 STAR HYGIENE AT ST ADHELM’S!
BOOK WEEK 2018 AT ASHCOTT SCHOOL
In the middle of a particularly busy day in March, the school had a surprise visit from an Environmental Health Officer, this time to carry out a full inspection of our kitchen operations. The EHO joined the kitchen staff during preparation and service, monitoring their practices and scrutinising storage habits and food hygiene records. The EHO was impressed with what she saw and confirmed that the school had retained their 5 star rating for Food Hygiene standards! Well done to the catering team for their continued hard work in maintaining these rigorous standards.
ELMHURST Y6 MILLFIELD ART TRIP TO HAM WALL The Year 6 children had a lovely (if slightly wet) day at Ham wall. Thanks went to Millfield for organizing the trip, providing the lunches and for the follow up art which took place over the next couple of weeks. Millfield will also be hosting an exhibition of the work at a later date. The school are really proud of the children for their behaviour on the trip; there were lots of positive comments from members of the public and from the staff who accompanied the children. Well done, Year 6.
It has been an exciting book week for the children at Ashcott Primary School, with a wide range of book-related activities happening throughout the week. At the start of the week, the children were visited by published children’s author, Abi Elphinstone. Abi is the author of the ‘Dreamsnatcher Trilogy’ and her latest book ‘Sky Song’ is being read by the school book club. Abi travelled from London to visit the school, sharing the inspirations behind her books and signing copies for the children. The school would like to thank Wells Festival of Literature who helped to fund Abi’s visit. On Thursday 1st March, children came to school dressed as their favourite book character for World Book Day. Children had the chance to visit the ‘Book Café’ and select what they would like to read from the reading menu. A ‘traditional trailer gazebo’ was set up in the library for the children to read stories and poems by torchlight. Children from Year 6, known as ‘Reading Stars’, organised a book swap and managed to accumulate nearly 200 books for children across the school to choose from. At the end of the week, parents were invited in to school to read with their children and their ‘buddies’ in their GEMS groups (houses/teams) – unfortunately, this was disrupted by the snow! The children and staff would like to thank Miss Stevens for all her hard work, organising such an exciting book week!

CROSCOMBE SCHOOL LAUNCH A PUPIL-LED ECO COMMITTEE Croscombe C of E Primary School has appointed seven pupils to form a brand-new Eco Committee.These children were selected for their dedication to protecting the environment and for demonstrating a keen interest in the school's edible garden, a lottery-funded project which launched last year. The school's active PTA, Friends of Croscombe School, hopes that this committee will spark enthusiasm in pupils and parents alike and allow Croscombe School to work towards becoming a sustainable school. Croscombe School's Eco Committee members have taken the lead in deciding what will be planted in the school's edible garden. They have already planted their choice of potatoes and have each been given a propagator to start-off seeds of their choice at home before planting them on in the school's edible garden. Seed choices ranged from white strawberries to ball carrots. The Eco Committee will work together to help grow the school's own fruit and vegetables. The Eco Committee have also been working together to further develop Croscombe School's beautiful conservation area - named Riley's Retreat. This dedicated team of pupils are also encouraged to come up with ideas to help the environment. The team's first eco request was to stop the school to stop buying plastic straws and use paper ones instead. The Eco Committee's project this half-term is to keep track of all the plastics used both in their homes and at school. They will note down all reusable plastics, recyclable plastics and also the single-use plastics that they feel they should reduce. This is a vital first step in getting families and the school to reduce their single-use plastics where possible.
PYJAMA DAY Priddy & St Lawrence’s held a pyjama day for EYFS and KS1 children at St Lawrence’s this week. The activity was the climax of our topic this term on 'Keeping healthy.' The focus for the day was the importance of sleep, a good breakfast and ways to relax. Children were asked to come to school in their pyjamas and we started the day by having breakfast together. The children brought in their favourite bedtime story, cuddly toy and a pot of bubbles to blow to help us relax! This activity was one of many transition activities as the Federation moves to having all KS1 children based at St Lawrence’s school and all KS2 children based at Priddy school in September. Head teacher Rosie Thorner was delighted that the children embraced the activities with great enthusiasm, making the most of the opportunity of working together.
ANNUAL GROUNDS DAY On Friday 20th April, St Cuthbert’s C of E Academy Infants’ and Pre-school had their annual Grounds Day. The children were joined by friends and family as they gave the grounds a spring clean. The children thoroughly enjoyed sweeping up and digging over the flowers bed and filling them with summer bedding plants. We can’t wait to see all the colour in the summer.
