Message from Contents the Chairman 4

Westfield Parish Council has been working hard for its community. After coming through one of the hottest summers in four decades and a reasonable autumn, winter is now upon us and work is under way to get the 2018 Christmas lights switch on event in place. This is now a regular annual event, growing in popularity all the time and it will be held around the living Christmas tree at the top of Elm Tree Avenue on the 29th November, starting at 6:30pm. Westfield Parish Council would like to thank all those residents who turned out to cast their vote on the Neighbourhood Plan. We are pleased to say that the vote led to the Plan being accepted and it will be put to the B&NES cabinet at the end of October. This will definitely put the parish of Westfield in a good place. In September, I led a walk around the boundary of Westfield. This was part of the Somer Valley Walking Festival and it was well attended by adults and children. Westfield Parish Council has been working with a cluster group to keep the youth project going in Westfield. This is one area that has been affected by the B&NES cuts and we are working hard to keep this service going for our young people. Residents may be aware that each month Councillors hold surgeries for the residents who have any concerns that they would like to discuss face to face. The next surgery will be held at Westfield Sports and Community Centre (formerly Westhill Club) on 17th November at 10:30am, with Cllr Bryan Wallbridge and Cllr James Honess. Please use the opportunity to meet your Councillors. Cllr Geoff Fuller Chair of Westfield Parish Council

Sun Chemical wins again!

Picured L to R: Frank Ford, Paul Prater, John Hughes, Debbie Plummer, Ryan Davies and Paul Robinson.

Following on from their outstanding success at last year’s Wells Moat Boat Race, the pressure was on for the Sun Chemical team to retain the trophies for another year. Winning all three of their races, team ‘Walk the Plank’ did not disappoint! Team members; Peter Saunders, Paul Prater, Frank Ford, John Hughes, Paul Robinson and Ryan Davies put in another sterling effort. Sun Chemical was also proud to be a sponsor for the Junior Obstacle Race. Thanks goes to Wells Lions Club who did an outstanding job again this year in organising the event and creating a great day out for all the family! Sun Chemical is a recognised leader in printing inks, coatings, adhesives and supplies for the packaging, publication, commercial, industrial, and digital markets, based in Westfield. Together with DIC, Sun Chemical employs over 20,000 people located at 176 subsidiaries across 63 countries, with their Westfield site employing The Westfield Warbler

over 200 staff in their R&D Laboratory and Production areas. Sun Chemical has delivered 200 years of colour expertise, innovative technology and an ongoing commitment to quality and service and to help celebrate their 200th Anniversary this year, the Charity, Well-being and Community Committee pulled out all the stops by hosting a Summer Festival for their staff and their families. Held at the Midsomer Norton Rugby Club, the team wanted everyone to be able to bring their families – young and old - to get together in a fun and social environment. It was also great to see several of the

Gwent team come across in a Mini Bus to share the day and mingle with their new colleagues. Tracy Hunt, from Sun Chemical, said: “We have some great musical talent at the Westfield site, so we thought why not arrange for them to showcase their music? John Hughes, Production Operative and Keith Horler, Production Technician, both played outstanding sets along with a local group ‘No Mean Feat’ adding to the atmosphere on this lovely sunny day!” As the inflatables were a hit last year, additional items were added making it great fun for all, many thanks to Jumping Jo’s Inflatables for their enthusiastic help during the day. For a bit of a competitive edge, there was a Tug of War with the now traditional ‘Management vs Operators’ grudge match. It would be inappropriate to say who won, but many of the operators have now joined a gym! A delicious Hog Roast & BBQ was provided by a local

pub, a very popular Smoothie Maker bicycle added a refreshing touch whilst also helping to raise money for Julian House Charity who kindly lent the bike for the day. Wells Astronomers Club came along to encourage people to look up to the stars and beyond! Swallow Community Café provided delicious homemade cakes which were sold on the day to raise money for them. Side stalls of Face Painting, an Ice Cream Van and Birds of Prey all added to the event. A raffle was held on the day, with proceeds going to Julian House Charity. Prizes were very kindly donated by Docky’s Delicatessen, The Centurion Hotel, Leaseplan and Bath Taxi Transfers. Special thanks to members of the Time is Precious Charity who provided marshalling for the Car Park area on the day. The whole day was a huge success with over 250 attendees. Everything went smoothly from start to finish.

Creation of a new allotment site at Larch Court

Earlier this year, following consultation with residents and talks with the Westfield Allotment and Garden Society (WAGS), the Parish Council agreed to take on land at Larch Court for the purpose of creating a new allotment site. A successful funding bid has ensured that the creation of the new site will not be at the expense of the people of Westfield and will allow WAGS to design and manage the site, drawing on their experience at the successful allotment site at Waterford Park. Having listened to the views of local residents, to mitigate concerns about parking the Parish Council has reduced the number of proposed plots to six and has agreed that they should be offered in the first instance to those who live adjacent to the site. We believe that this hitherto piece of derelict land has the potential to become a thriving, productive allotment site and we look forward to seeing the improvements step by step. Are you winter ready? As winter approaches, it is important for all members of the community to be prepared for potentially cold weather. It isn’t just our health we should be concerned about as the weather becomes colder and frost makes surfaces slippery and brings about winter illnesses. Many people also find themselves worried that they might not be able to afford household bills as their energy use increases. Westfield Parish Councillor, Lesley Mansell, has suggested that people take advice from Independent Age. She said: “Current figures show that increasing numbers of people are finding it harder to make ends meet. There is a free booklet available online produced by Independent Age for older people and has lots of helpful information.” Independent Age are a charity that offers free advice and support. They have a number of leaflets and guidebooks aimed at helping older people with a variety of concerns. Their Free Guide 108 offers advice and information to help with the managing of bills, which can be reassuring during the winter months.

Advice includes: • General advice on boosting income • Heating the home and reducing fuel bills • Health and care costs • Housing costs • Travel costs • Emergency expenses • The extra costs of being a carer • And taxes, among other issues. Free copies of the help books, as well as other fact sheets are available by visiting www.independentage.org or by calling the freephone number 0800 856 6766 and quote the code “Free Guide 108”.

Are you interested in becoming a snow warden? Westfield Parish Council have been thinking ahead to winter by recognising the hard work put in by the parish’s snow wardens. It is one of the most effective and rewarding volunteer roles in the parish and there are four people locally who brave the bad weather to ensure that pavements are properly gritted. The Parish Council would like this scheme to continue, so are looking for anyone interested in becoming a snow warden. High-vis jackets are provided, along with a gritting machine, salt and some guidance. The Snow Wardens can decide for themselves whether they wish to store their gritter and salt on their own premises or with the Parish Council. When snow and ice are forecast, they head out and grit the footpaths in their immediate vicinity, taking their own view of where the gritting is most needed. The amount of time they give and when is entirely up to

them, there is no time commitment. We’re all aware of how dangerous and isolating bad weather can be, especially for the more vulnerable members of society. Chair of the Council, Geoff Fuller said, “It is inspirational that there are people in this parish who give their time to transform the lives of their neighbours and make such a massive difference. Thank you Westfield Snow Wardens!”.

If you are interested in becoming a snow warden, please contact: council@westfieldparishcouncil. co.uk or write to the Clerk at Westfield Parish Council, The Oval Office, Cobblers Way, Westfield BA3 3BX.

This year, Trustees at the Heritage Railway met in Midsomer Norton’s Town Hall to plan for the next decade. Progress has been so good that they believe it is time to make some expansions that will help to make Midsomer Norton a major visitor destination with a National Heritage Railway. Plans discussed included clearing the infill and laying track up to Chilcompton Tunnel, new shedding so that more steam locos can be brought in and improved catering and retail facilities. The Trustees are proud of the true to life renovations that have already been made and are determined that any expansion will be in line with the station as it was before closure. A recent dvd which is on sale at the station shows excerpts from the old Somerset and Dorset in action but also the reconstruction work done by today’s volunteers.

Could you join John to run for SWALLOW?

Local running celebrity, John Reynolds, is supporting SWALLOW charity by running in the Bath Half Marathon on 17th March 2019. He is also offering to support runners to train for the event through his Westfield TT Running Group. The charity which supports local teenagers and adults with learning disabilities is based in Westfield. Money is needed to be able to continue SWALLOW’s work and

they are hoping to recruit at least 20 people to run the Bath Half using one of the charity’s silver bond places. They would also welcome people who have their own places to pledge to run for SWALLOW. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Nicky Tew on 01761 414 034 or by email at nickyt@swallowcharity.org.

Meet the Grant Recipient

Name of recipient Westfield Ladies’ Choir – now Westfield Voices! What is the main purpose of your organisation? The choir meets weekly to rehearse and performs about 15 times per year at a variety of functions including local events, charity concerts and to support local groups, schools, churches, charities and care homes. We make a point of trying to support Westfield events. We also have a social calendar which includes parties, trips and fundraising events. The choir welcomes anyone who wants to join without any audition and we provide support and a social network as well as entertaining people.

What was the grant from Westfield Parish Council used for? We do not ask for a fee when we perform and try to pay our expenses from our subscriptions. However, each time we perform the choir needs to pay for our 10 - The Westfield Warbler

conductor and pianist. £750 of our £850 grant covered performance fees and we spent £100 on new music to broaden our repertoire and matching flower pins to add to our uniform. Music is a major expense which we cannot avoid if we wish to provide our audiences with variety.

Were there any extras for which you had to find funds or did our grant cover the whole project? The grant did not cover all the costs of our rehearsals and performances. The full cost of the new music and flower pins was also not covered by the grant. We have held several fundraising events and used our subscription money to cover the rest.

What are the main benefits you have seen as a result of the grant funding? The grant really has made a difference between the choir

being able to continue or having to fold. We have been able to perform at a larger number of venues where we don’t receive a fee, including parish events, care homes, Fosse Way School and small clubs. We have also been able to promote the choir more actively and are currently trying to recruit even more new members. The money has been tremendously helpful in maintaining the choir and allowing us to continue as a caring and supportive group within the community. We have been trying to recruit a permanent accompanist and the money has allowed us to fund temporary pianists so that we have been able to continue to perform and rehearse.

How did you find the process of applying for a grant? Was it easy, did it take much time? Actually the process wasn’t too complicated, although I was anxious to get it right and fill everything in correctly. It took a relatively short amount of time to complete considering the large amount of benefit that we were able to receive.

Do you have any advice for potential applicants when completing grant applications? Just read the forms carefully and fill in as best you can. If you get stuck there is always someone who can help out and it isn’t like an examination.

What are your organisation’s plans for the future and how important is grant funding in those plans? We really want to continue to support our local community and provide a welcoming place for people to get together and sing. We are hoping to attract more members and perform at a wider range of venues. This means that we are updating our image as well as our repertoire. Without the grant funding we would not be able to afford to pay for a competent accompanist and conductor or perform in venues where there was no means to cover our costs. We would definitely not be able to update our repertoire with new music which is very expensive as are uniform items and music folders. We are enormously grateful to the Parish Council for their support through this grant funding.

If you look after someone, who looks after you? The Carers’ Centre provides free advice, support and breaks for people who care for family or friends. If you’re looking after someone who is ill, disabled or frail, we’re here for you. Call weekdays 10am —1pm on 0800 0388 885 for advice, or visit banescarerscentre.org.uk The Westfield Warbler - 11

Snails Brook – A clean up operation Since 2012 (and even before this) a small group of enthusiastic volunteers have been quietly monitoring, tidying and looking to improve the historic area of the river which runs through Grove Wood known as Snails Brook. Once a swimming pool bathing area enjoyed by local families, the volunteers are looking to return it to its former glory. Over the years, works have included an Environment Agency report, which indicated the excellent quality of the water, work by Writhlington School pupils to clear a pathway from the church to the river and more recently, clean-up events where volunteers turned out to cut back vegetation and clear the river of excess plastic and debris. Regular visitors to Radstock Museum may have seen the miner’s boot which was unearthed during one of the tidy-up days. The boot is on display alongside the winning entries to a recent story writing competition which invited young authors to imagine how the boot ended up in the river.

The latest work to be undertaken involved the dredging of this section of the river which has made a huge difference to the look of the river. Meanwhile the

It’s time to ‘Party at Mardons!’ Whilst most Saturdays can be considered party nights at Mardons Social Club, with free entertainment and top quality live bands performing weekly, things will be taken up a notch as the festive season approaches.

For The Record Mardons Christmas Party Night will be on Saturday, 22nd December and will feature For The Record band. Vocalists, Lucy and Kate, are phenomenal. Backed by the full band and a superbly rich sound, they are full of enthusiasm, from start to finish. Performing a clever mix of pop rock and soul classics, they cover songs from The Spice Girls to Fleetwood Mac and many more. On Christmas Eve, Mardons extend a very warm invitation to the local community to join them for some fun. Open all day from noon, for one of their most popular events, the volunteer organisers will host a ‘Kids Christmas Party’ for local children. Starting at 1pm, there will be all the usual fun, games and general mayhem, and of course Santa will drop in to see all the ‘good’ little boys and girls. As always, there will be lots of treats, sweets and surprises throughout the day, but parents are reminded that they must remain on the premises at all times to supervise their own children.

Masters of their craft, the four piece are all incredible musicians, ably turning their hand to any musical genre, be it rock, pop, soul, ska or general party cheese! Selecting the best songs and performing them faultlessly, their joy for what they do is infectious. Following the all positive feedback last year, it will once again be a rare over-18s only night. Tickets will go on general sale and be available to everyone from Friday, 16th November at 5pm (with members having advance access to tickets at a discounted price for two weeks prior to this.)

As well as the lively music scene, the social club continues to offer BT and Sky Sports on the big screen and multiple TVs and also provides streaming of ‘red button’ matches, so fans can now enjoy more games, often including Bristol City fixtures. What culinary delights can you cook up? Whether you are making a spaghetti bolognese, an autumn soup or tasty casserole, the one thing you may well need are herbs to add that finishing touch to your dish. The horror of finding that you have run out of something at a crucial moment can be the end of that particular delight.

Westfield Parish Council has the answer – the herb garden at the shops at Elm Tree Avenue is available to all to come along and take small amounts to add to your tasty dishes. Bayleaf the gardener has been hard at work to keep all the plants in good condition ready for cooks to help themselves and Sir Basil and Lady Rosemary are happy to make them available to everyone.

There are a range of herbs available which include Rosemary, Sage, Chives, Bay, Lavender, Mint, Marjoram and Oregano. Some of these are winter hardy and available all year around. Why not take advantage of them and make up a warm winter casserole or soup for the cold days and nights ahead? To start you off, here’s a recipe for a tasty soup:

KEEP THE WORLD LOOKING BEAUTIFUL!

Roast Pumpkin Soup with crispy sage • 1.5kg pumpkin (prepared weight), cut into large wedges and seeds removed • Olive oil • 2 tsp sea salt (garlic salt is good if you can get it) • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 sprigs rosemary, leaves picked • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 15g butter • 2 onions, peeled and roughly chopped • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced • 2 bay leaves • 1 carrot, diced • 2 sprigs of rosemary • 2 sprigs of thyme • 1 tbsp fresh sage leaves, finely chopped • 1.5 litres chicken or vegetable stock • ½ tsp ground nutmeg To serve: • 20g butter • 18 large fresh sage leaves • Smoked paprika Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Put the pumpkin wedges in a roasting tin. Drizzle with olive oil and scatter with salt, some pepper, the rosemary leaves and the smoked paprika. Roast in the oven for around 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the pumpkin is tender. Leave to cool.

Heat 1 tbsp olive oil and the butter in a large saucepan or stock pot. Sauté the onion, garlic, bay leaves, carrot, rosemary, thyme and sage over a medium heat for 10 minutes, or until soft and starting to turn golden. Peel the skin off the cooked pumpkin and discard it. Break the flesh into pieces, then add to the pan with the herbs and vegetables. Cook for another minute or so, then pour in the stock and add the nutmeg. Simmer, covered, for 20-30 minutes, until everything is tender. Leave the soup to cool for around 15 minutes, then blitz in a blender (you may need to do this in batches) until completely smooth. To serve, reheat the soup in a large pan. Taste and check the seasoning, adding more salt, pepper, nutmeg or paprika if necessary. In a small pan, heat the butter until it starts to turn golden and smell slightly nutty. Add the sage leaves, and cook for a couple of minutes until they start to crisp up. Divide the soup between 6 bowls, placing 3 sage leaves in each bowl (drizzle any leftover sage butter over the top). Sprinkle with smoked paprika and serve with crusty bread. We hope you enjoy it. And if you’d like to get some photographs of your creations for the next copy of the Westfield Warbler we’d be delighted to include them.

Birch Road voluntary planting Sometimes it is the quiet news stories which make us stop and realise that Westfield is such a lovely place to live.

About a year ago the Parish Council was approached by a resident of Birch Road about a small piece of land which was seemingly derelict and very unsightly. After months of trying to find the landowner, the Parish Council came to understand that the landowner had gone into liquidation many years previously.

The resident decided to do something about it and the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures here speak for themselves. Thank you Karen for the many hours of digging, weeding and planting you have put in to improve the street scene for everyone and make a difference to our everyday lives. If it looks this good in the autumn, we can’t wait to see what it looks like in the height of summer next year.

Fosse Way Students Celebrate Exam Success Students and staff at Fosse Way, the outstanding special school in Westfield, were once again thrilled to receive an excellent set of results following this summer’s examinations. This year a record 23 students, including 65% of year 11, were entered for one or more GCSE qualifications. The much anticipated results day brought the exhilarating news that Fosse Way’s students had achieved a pass rate of nearly 100%; almost every student was awarded a grade in each subject they had been entered for! Many achieved a level of success that far outstripped what they had imagined possible on commencing their courses two years ago. Besides this two students achieved level 2 Silver Arts Awards in Performing Arts; qualifications that are also equivalent to grade C grade at GCSE. This impressive level of success in Performing Arts is another first for Fosse Way School. Meanwhile one of Fosse Way’s students, who was educated at a nearby comprehensive school with specialist support from Fosse Way staff, gained an impressive eight GCSEs at grade 4 or higher. Another of Fosse Way’s students, who completed A level and

Cambridge International examinations at the same school, achieved grades that have enabled him to take up a four-year degree course in Business Studies at Bournemouth University. Assistant Principal Ian Tanner, who is in charge of secondary education, commented: “I am really pleased with such a great set of results. The huge efforts of the students paid off with excellent achievements in a diverse range of qualifications. It was great to see successes including GCSEs, BTECs, Arts awards, Cambridge Nationals and Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Many of the students found the experience of exams particularly challenging which makes the results even more impressive. A special mention to all the staff and parents who supported the children to do so well. I wish all of the students every success as they move on to their next challenges at our Post 16 Centre and other colleges.”

Help Swan Transport to help local people Swan Transport are helping many people in the Norton Radstock area to get out and about but we have reached the point where we are turning people away because we just don’t have enough drivers to go around. Sarah Oughton the Transport Coordinator said: “We have a fantastic team of volunteer drivers in the area but we are always looking for more to join Swan and we particularly need people who live in this area to come forward. This year we have seen a 25% increase in enquiries and higher demand for our transport services compared to last year and so far this year from April – September we have provided 2,800 journeys, so we are keen to take on new drivers to help our existing drivers in the area meet the demand for social and health trips. Turning away a person in need who is asking for our help is always frustrating; we would love to do more to help people with their health and wellbeing to get out and about. It would be great to say yes we can help because we have enough drivers.” If you have ever thought of becoming a volunteer, Sarah would love to hear from any drivers with a few hours spare each week or a few hours every month, whatever time you have we can find a journey for you. If you want to make a difference and enjoy meeting people then we have the opportunity for you. The benefits of staying active as you are getting older are well documented. For younger drivers you may be looking to change your career or to increase your employment prospects. For drivers on a limited budget volunteer driving can help with the costs of running a car.

As a volunteer driver you will need your own vehicle. Swan Transport provides full training and ongoing support and mileage expenses are paid at the Inland Revenue rate. Drivers can choose how much or little they do and can have regular journeys or drive as and when they are available. Have a look at Swan’s website at swan.bctkco.uk there is a short film which showcases the work they do. Swan look forward to hearing from you. Please ring Sarah to discuss or request an application form on 01761 439548 or email swan.transport@btconnect. com. Together we can make a huge difference to health and well-being in Westfield, Radstock and Midsomer Norton for ourselves and others.

Westfield Primary School welcomed into the MNSP Westfield Primary School is the latest school to announce that on the 1st October 2018 the School converted to Academy status and simultaneously joined the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership Multi Academy Trust (MAT). Approved by the Secretary of State for Education, this conversion will allow the school to have more control over its day to day operations within the support network offered by the MNSP MAT, which now operates ten primary schools in the Midsomer Norton area as well as the two secondary schools in the town and St Dunstan’s secondary in Glastonbury. Simon Mills, Headteacher, commented: “Being part of the trust will enable our staff to work closely with the other schools to share and further develop good practice, which will benefit our pupils and the whole school community. The MNSP will also challenge us further as we strive to provide the very highest

quality experiences and outcomes for our children without losing the unique ethos of Westfield School.” MAT CEO and Executive Headteacher Alun Williams said: “I am extremely pleased that Westfield Primary has decided to join the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership. We have always worked closely with the school and can now extend this collaboration to support opportunities for all in the Westfield Primary School community. I really look forward to working with the staff and children at the school, as do all those colleagues and children who are already part of the Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership”.

Westfield Primary School are a blooming success Westfield Primary School are celebrating winning the cup for the overall winner in the Bath in Bloom schools group. All the classes are involved in gardening at Westfield: children have enjoyed a carrot competition, growing a monster pumpkin and growing ingredients for a stir-fry. The garden club children have been busy designing and landscaping a new garden to help their learning about the local mining heritage. The children would like to say ‘thank you’ to all the staff and parents who have helped to make this achievement possible. The Westfield Warbler - 23

A hearty tramp through Westfield’s green and pleasant land Westfield can boast industry, retail, parks, open spaces, woodland and of course, our homes! We got to see the whole range when a group of walkers joined Parish Council Chairman, and life-long resident of Westfield, Geoff Fuller, for the second annual Westfield Heritage Walk. The group, which included six young children, enjoyed a four mile walk, peppered with anecdotes about Westfield’s history, on a very pleasant afternoon in September. Following the Waterside Valley trail, one of three heritage trails in the Parish, the group set off from Westfield shops towards the batch. Passing Sun Chemical, one of the larger employers in the Parish, we headed down the old Pit Path to the beautiful cycle track taking in the peace and quiet of nature and enjoying the views across Midsomer Norton. Joining the Radstock Greenway at Five Arches we headed along the cycle path towards Radstock park and through the centre of Radstock; some of which, many may be surprised to hear, is within the Parish of Westfield! Passing St Nicholas Church and SWALLOW’s café (a fantastic Westfield-based charity) we entered the beautiful, open Waterside valley. Lush green from the recent rain and perhaps challengingly over grown in places we enjoyed learning about the former Snails Brook swimming area, which is currently being re-vamped, spotting the pill boxes used to protect

the perimeter of the many mines in the area and looking out for wildlife in and around Grove Wood. An enthusiastic climb up the edge of the valley and we were at the back of the Waterford Park estate, from where we had only to cross Haydon batch to end up back on tarmac in the Westfield Industrial Estate.

Anyone interested in following one of the three Heritage Trail walks can visit our website: www.westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk/community-information/heritage-walks/ or look out for the trail boards at the entrance to Norwest Bowls Club, at the bottom of Longfellow Road, at the bottom of the cycle track near Somervale Road and behind St Nicholas Church at the entrance to the Waterside Valley.

The Changing Seasons

By Apollos and Connor – Westfield School In the park, I can see: Soft, cold, white snow like an ice-cream Snowball fights being made As well as a great snow wall taking shape. Bright, yellow buttercups sprout away, Today’s a splendid, sunny day, A beautiful shimmering lake travels through the wood, Snow-like white blossoms waving in the wind Bright, red fire burning through the summer evening The metallic, orange sun shining for summer, Salt water tides rising from the sea Above the flowers under the tree there’s a buzzing bee Orange, brown crunchy leaves fall from the tree The leaves are all being blown away by the breeze Picking juicy, red apples from the tree We also see orange coloured pumpkins

The Change of Seasons

By Tayla and Poppy – Westfield School In the snowy garden I can see Children’s faces filled with glee Catching snowflakes on their tongue Oh my goodness, winter’s such fun! In the sprouting garden that is welcoming spring Long, drippy icicles are starting to cling The poppies are gradually starting to grow And the farmers in their fields are starting to mow. In the scorching hot summer I can see The big, bright sun shining down on me, My ice lolly is melting all over my hand And sweat is dripping from my head band. In the garden, I can see Excited children playing with leaves Children dressed in scary costumes And when the pumpkins burn, they leave smelly fumes. The Westfield Warbler - 25

New team and new name at popular Westfield club Set right in the heart of Westfield, on West Hill Road, it’s all change at one of Westfield’s prime facilities. Formerly called Westhill Sports & Social Club the club was relaunched in April as Westfield Sports & Community Centre. Terry and Annette Andrews, formerly owners of Party Plus in Midsomer Norton and Steward and Stewardess at Welton Rovers, were initially approached in February for ideas on how to make best use of the club. They had so many ideas that they were asked by the trustees to join the team and did so full-time in March. Since then it’s been non-stop! To start with, both the bar area and the function hall (which now has a catchy name of The Venue) have had partial makeovers with further improvements to come. These include a brand new kitchen, partially funded by a grant from St John’s Foundation in Bath. This will enable the club to provide bar snacks as well as catering for various events and functions. Available to accommodate up to 180, The Venue is also available to hire for parties and private functions. So far it has played host to birthday and anniversary parties, wedding receptions and christenings as well as charity fundraisers. Sunday night bingo has also returned. Starting at 7.30 it is increasing in popularity every week, so do come along. Players arrive from 6.30 onwards, so make sure you arrive in plenty of time. The prize money now regularly tops £400 each week. Annette also holds a raffle each time with the prizes well worth winning, as many regulars will confirm. Sunday afternoon sees the meat draw take place. Prizes, which are provided by Phil Day in Radstock, can be anything from a packet of sausages up to joints of meat. Tickets are available to purchase at the bar throughout the week and at £1 a go are well worth it. Live music and entertainment are also becoming a regular welcome feature at The Venue. Those who have performed up to now include, amongst others, singer Bennie Vee, duo MiB and bands The Dresdens and NiteShift. There is usually a small entrance fee of around £2 charged for our music and entertainment. 26 - The Westfield Warbler

We are also very pleased to announce that the brilliant 4 piece 60’s band The Berries will be playing at The Venue on Saturday 17th November. There will be a slightly higher ticket price of £5 for this event. Tickets, which are available from the bar, are selling fast, so be sure to get yours soon. Also on the entertainment side, on the last Thursday of each month we hold an Afternoon Social from 2-5pm at which we have music and a singer, play some bingo and have one of Annette’s famous raffles. Refreshments are also provided. Many of those attending are our older residents, although all are welcome. Entry is £2. In addition to all this we have a growing number of sports and activity clubs making use of our facilities. So far karate, line dancing, pool and darts groups are amongst those we have welcomed. Not only that, but our first Summer Skittles season drew to a close in September. Beginning in May, it was a very successful season with 18 teams playing a total of 153 matches. Prize money for the season totalled over £3,000. We already have a packed festive season in place with entertainment on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. For more information, call the club on 01761 568020 or check out our Facebook page, or the site: www. westfieldclub.co.uk

This is to celebrate the 350th year of Westfield Massachusetts. They have reached across the ‘pond’ to Westfield, B&NES and asked us to help them to mark the occasion. 350 years is a long time, so we were happy to help. A young person living in Westfield B&NES and two Councillors will have a discussion with their counterparts in Massachusetts about what life is like here and what is good, or not so good, about the area in which we live. We will explore the origin of the name of Westfield for both communities, find out about who lives there and what they do and look to the future and ask what residents of each community would like to see happen in their community. The whole conversation is to be facilitated by Somer Valley FM and they will broadcast it on New Year’s Eve, so listen out for it.

Outstanding Awards from It’s Your Neighbourhood and the Royal Horticultural Society Once again the green fingered pupils of Westfield Primary School and plot holders at Westfield Allotments have done wonders with their gardens and green spaces and both have won Outstanding awards in the It’s Your Neighbourhood event. It’s Your Neighbourhood is a scheme put together by the Royal Horticultural Society to encourage people to make the most of the space around them. It aims to “Clean and green specific places in your area – whether it’s the street you live in, an existing community garden or a disused area that needs a revamp. From de-stressing you after a frantic day to giving you healthy physical exercise in the ‘green gym’ - no pricey membership fee to pay - there is mounting evidence that gardens and gardening have an increasingly important role to play in our busy lives.” Westfield Primary School pupils have been working hard, winning awards in both It’s Your Neighbourhood and Bath in Bloom.

28 - The Westfield Warbler

WAGS (Westfield Allotment and Garden Society) have also worked hard to include as many residents of Westfield as possible in enjoying their outdoor space and creating a beautiful environment. Some of the people they have included are the young people of our parish and the disabled. On receiving the award Chair of WAGS, Martin Bates said, “This is not just me, it’s all the allotmenteers, a joint effort, and we are very proud”. The Chairman of Westfield Parish Council, Cllr Geoff Fuller, said “It is always a pleasure to see the results of the efforts of allotmenteers at the site. We are fortunate in Westfield to have the allotment site and are delighted that it is to be expanded into Larch Court, with plots soon to be made available to residents. Congratulations to WAGS for always putting on a wonderful display and picking up awards.”

The

Parish Clerk A

s the evenings draw in and autumn turns to winter, it is good to spend some time reflecting on the past year and looking ahead to what is in store for 2019. A highlight of the year was the referendum for the Westfield Neighbourhood Plan which was adopted and is to go to B&NES Cabinet prior to becoming part of our local planning policy.

Two significant budget cuts at Bath and North East Somerset Council spring to mind when I think back on the challenges we faced this year. The first relates to the cut in funding for open access youth provision, leaving the towns and parishes to pick up these costs in their entirety. Here in

Westfield, this means that from 1st October the Parish Council began funding the very popular Tuesday evening youth session. At the time of writing this article, the Youth Connect Team Leader is in the process of setting up the new Youth Connect Mutual which will deliver youth work in Westfield. The second B&NES budget cut which reverberated in Westfield was the grass cutting of amenity land which is classed as ‘ownerless’. Previously maintained by B&NES, a number of roads in Westfield suffered from little or no grass cuts of their amenity land this summer. Talks are still ongoing about how such ‘ownerless’ land should be maintained in the future. Safety inspections highlighted the need for some works to the play area over the year and this autumn sees new safety surfacing under the basket swing at Norton Hill Recreation Ground. It is not too early to start thinking about standing for election to the Parish Council next year. If you are thinking of representing the community in which you live and would like more information please contact us at council@westfieldparishcouncil.co.uk Best wishes for a happy and peaceful Christmas.
