These are extremely exciting times in Weston-superMare and with the regeneration of the sea front and the very popular and well used Water park plus the exciting new grand pier, we have a lot to offer our locals and visitors. Weston-super-Mare is very fortunate to have a museum that holds an enormous amount of local history and has regular exhibitions from local groups. There is a well-stocked shop and the coffee shop is well worth a visit.

your council
Your town council works towards improving community well-being and providing better services at a local level. There are over 8,700 parish and town councils representing around 16 million people across England. They form the most local level of government and cover many rural and urban areas.
What services does the Town Council provide? Your town council has an overall responsibility for the well-being of your local community. Their work falls into three main categories: • representing your local community • delivering services to meet local needs • striving to improve quality of life in the town.
If you have any questions, please contact us on 01934 632567
Your council provides and maintains the following services: • Museum • Milton Road cemetery • Bus shelters • Blakehay Theatre • Barcode youth café • Weddings • Weston in Bloom • Water Park • Play areas Where does the Town Council get its money from? Each year a sum of money called a ‘precept’ is collected through your council tax. This money is used by your town council to improve facilities and services for local people. Your Town Council can also apply for grants and loans and, if they own property, can receive money from rents or leases.

Once again the British Heart Foundation will be holding the Family Walk Along The Prom in Weston-Super-Mare on Sunday 16th September 2012. This event is in its second year and is a family walk that will begin at Weston General Hospital continuing along the Prom and will be finishing up at the Grand Pier. This year funds will be raised for Weston General Hospital as the cardiology department needs 24-hour tape units and loop recorders which are used to record heart rhythms and diagnose the cause of palpitations and blackouts. The recorder units cost approx £1,550 and the loop recorders about £500 each! Funds are also being raised for the British Heart Foundations Mending Broken Hearts Appeal. Its goal is simple, to raise money for research that could literally ‘mend the broken hearts’ of millions who suffer from heart and circulatory disease which is the UK’s biggest killer. You can register online up until the 12th September by visiting www. bhf.org.uk or you can simply register on the day. You can also set up an online sponsorship page by visiting www.justgiving.com/bhf Entry fee is £5 which goes towards the cost of running the event safely. Registration is from 10am and the walk starts 11am.
GRAND PIER HALF MARATHON
The Grand Pier has teamed up with Freak Events Ltd to stage the first half marathon to be held in Westonsuper-Mare for over 20 years! The 13.1 mile race will start at 9am on the Grand Pier and will continue up the Promenade to Uphill, back via the Pier, down to the Marine Lake and onto the Toll Road. Two laps of the course will equal 13.1 miles! The route is entirely on roads and tarmac, a route map is available by visiting www.freakevents.co.uk Each runner can register on the Freak Events website and choose one of the seven nominated charities to support. Race entry includes a free t-shirt and goody bag, runners will also receive a Grand Pier £5 ride voucher and a Grand Pier food discount voucher (to be used on the day). Entry fee is £24.50 (non-affiliated club runner) and £22.50 (affiliated club runner). There is a £500 winners prize plus prizes for the top runners in each category.

NOT THE MIDNIGHT WALK
Weston Hospicecare provides specialist nursing care, practical advice and support and a friendly listening ear to local people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families. They help people caring for their loved ones in a place of their choice, be that at the Hospice, or in their own home, nursing or residential home. Each year Weston Hospicecare needs to raise a staggering £3 million! This incredible amount of money pays for the continued work supporting and providing specialist palliative care for 1,300 local people and their families living with a life limiting illness – at any one time the Hospice is supporting 1 in 100 local people! Weston Hospicecare covers Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding areas as far afield as Highbridge, Burnham on Sea, Cheddar, Draycott, Yatton, Congresbury and Clevedon. All of the services and support for local people are totally free of charge. The organisation receives less than 20% of the £3 million it costs to run Weston Hospicecare from the Government and so they are therefore very reliant on and grateful for the support and generosity of the community. Saturday September 8th sees the 6th midnight beach walk however this year it will be running earlier at 6.30pm hence the new name ‘Not The Midnight Beach Walk’. The hospice is hoping to raise £65,000 and are hoping over 1,000 women will join in. There are two distances to choose from, 5km or 10km. You can register online at www.midnightbeachwalk.org.uk or call 01934 423960.

WESTON in bloom Weston in Bloom has 25 Volunteers, all who have been working extremely hard during May removing all of the Spring bedding that has been so colourful over the last few months and replanting with Summer bedding. To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics the colour theme this year will be red, white and blue. The Volunteers have been working on the floral boats on the roundabouts along the Queensway, the large wicker baskets at Paddock Park and Bideford Road, tubs and baskets in Worle High Street, the model train at Alexander Parade, tubs at the railway station and Playhouse. This year due to the cutbacks by North Somerset 4 beds in Grove Park, including a bio diversity flower bed, will also be planted by Weston in Bloom, as well as the flower beds at Dawson’s Island and Ebdon Road. Our new project is a 4ft Bucket and 8ft Spade in Willow, to be placed in a flower bed near the Winter Gardens Pavilion. This has been kindly donated by Cheddar Garden Centre. Weston in Bloom has organised a design competition for the Sensory Garden. Walliscote Primary School has produced designs to create 4 x Finger Maze Sensory Boards to be installed at the Sensory Garden in Grove Park. A two year project has started to create a biodiversity flower bed in Grove Park using native wildflowers in planting schemes to help reverse the trend of habitat loss creating food and homes for wildlife. South West in Bloom Judges will be judging Westonsuper-Mare. Our judges will be Tracy Wilson and Michael Foy.
Weston in Bloom is honoured to host the 2012 South West in Bloom Awards on September the 20th to be held at the Winter Gardens Pavilion. We are always looking for new helpers, if you are interested, come and join us. Please contact Lilah at Weston-super-Mare Town Council on 01934 632567.

lottery fund Though Weston Town Council acquired the Burlington Street premises (without the benefit of adjoining storage facilities) in April 2011 following North Somerset Council’s decision to close the Museum the collections remain in North Somerset’s ownership and have been removed to the purpose-built, humidity-controlled Somerset County Council heritage centre in Taunton. All three Councils are now committed to furthering the aims and aspirations of Weston Museum and items from the extensive collections will be seen in Burlington Street as part of both the permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Town Council is seeking grant aid from the heritage lottery fund to improve the Museum by (a) adding a lift to the first floor, (b) re-designing display cabinets, (c) introducing inter-active information systems, (d) creating a high-security “white room” for regional and national loans, (e) exposing an internal mews cottage façade to help illustrate the Museum’s former role as the Gas Company’s workshop, and (f) modernising the ground floor art gallery. This First Phase of the Museum Development Plan will make possible the better display and interpretation of artefacts and facilitate a regular “turn-over” of exhibition material from Taunton.
Weston-super Mare Museum and the Heritage Lottery Fund
Despite its popularity clara’s cottage needs presentational renewal. This will be undertaken in Phase Two of the Museum Development Plan. The upper long gallery, which is currently inaccessible to the public, could house working art studios. The installation of new stair cases will form Phase Three of the Museum Development Plan. The Town Council is making a substantial financial contribution to Phase One though project success will be dependent upon the HLF bid. Museum opening times have recently changed (Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm) in response to newly emerging patterns of recreation. The Museum is visited by an increasing number of people; residents and visitors; young and old; school classes and community groups; committed historyseekers and casual droppers-in, and the museum working party continues to seek the views of all who cross the threshold so that the Museum will become even more successful at telling Weston’s fascinating story. milton road cemetery Since taking over the historic Milton Road Cemetery in 2003, the Town Council have made a number of improvements around the site. As a result, a number of people have decided to pre-purchase plots for their final resting place, which they feel helps to reduce stress and anxiety on their loved ones that are left behind. The Town Council has recently located a number of burial plots in the main section of the cemetery which are now available to purchase. We are also able to offer more than 200 plots for cremated remains in the newly formed Memorial Garden, which provides an attractive quiet area to inter two sets of cremated remains in each plot. The Town Council offers an all inclusive package which consists of a cremated remains plot (with 30 year deed), a polished black granite desk style memorial, first inscription, permit and fitting of the memorial.

... an Olympian in our town Paulo Radmilovic was born in Cardiff, the third son of Antun Radmilovic, a native of Dubrovnik who relocated to Cardiff in 1860 and became the landlord of a pub in Bute Street, Cardiff. His mother was born in Cardiff, the daughter of Irish immigrants. He won his first Amateur Swimming Association title in 1907 when victorious in the open water five mile race in the River Thames. He then went on to compete and win nine titles over a 19 year span over varying distances. His Olympic career began as a swimmer at the 1906 Intercalated Games where he finished 4th in the 100 metres freestyle and 5th in the 400 metres event. In 1908 he won a gold medal as part of the British water polo team that defeated Belgium 9-2 in the final. He also competed in the 4x200 metre swimming relay race where he obtained another gold medal. It was after the 1908 Olympics that Radmilovic moved to Weston Super Mare and represented the towns swimming and water polo clubs. He won his third gold at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, the British team defeated the Austrian team 8-0. His fourth and final gold came at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp where he scored and defeated the Belgians 3-2. His record of four gold medals was unrivalled by any British Olympian until Sir Steve Redgrave equalled and eventually broke it by winning his fifth title in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
Radmilovic ran the Imperial Hotel in Weston-super-Mare for many years and was still swimming 400m a day at the age of seventy eight. He was inducted in to the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of his 1908 doublegold Olympic performance a plaque was places on the Cardiff International Pool to honour him, paid for by the 2012 London Olympics Committee and the Welsh Assembly. He sadly died in 1968 aged 82 and is buried in Milton Road Cemetery.
