The Competition for the Finnoo Marina City involves the opportunity to develop a complete fragment of a city in an area that is due to become essential for the life, image and regeneration of Espoo and far beyond.
Performance Square Concert Hall
We face the opportunity to create the concept of a contemporary city in which values as landscape connectivity and enhancement, urban and eco-friendly means of transportation, and the creation of a dense mixed used marina city were primary concerns and the key points during the shaping of the project. The acknowledgement of the complex reality of Finnoo constitutes a necessary condition for the success of the formulation of the strategies. Consequently, the structure of the project is organized as a summary of innovative concepts and urban development policies capable of reinventing and reinterpreting the city focusing on its environmental, infrastructural, socio-cultural and image related aspects.

We find ourselves faced with a unique opportunity to develop a contemporary museum concept drawn from a transcendental urban role and a historical responsibility as a cohesive element for the community not only of Oslo but of all the nation. The Museum is conceived as an institution which is open to the city and highly visible, which must be visited many times in a lifetime because of its dynamic programs but also because of its power as a place of concentration, walks and daily relaxation in its terraces and cafes or even because of its retail spaces.

Following some recent successful experiences, the museum is developed in a vertical layout strongly contrasting with the existing building -the Robledo factory-. The distance between the old and the new, reinforces the idea of temporal and stylistic independence of both facilities, that stay connected through a garden and a pool which works as an example of the relationship between the contemporary art and nature. The vertical development of the program allows to divide the building easily in sectors in order to open a wide range of possibilities concerning different and independent schedules for each kind of user.

es El Museo se desarrolla en vertical, siguiendo algunas experiencias recientes de gran capacidad propositiva, en contraste con el marcado sentido horizontal de los Talleres Robledo, de los que nos separamos para acentuar la independencia estilística y temporal de ambos equipamientos que quedarán enlazados por un espacio común, tierra todos y de nadie, en forma de jardín o estanque que, ejemplifica la relación del arte contemporáneo con la naturaleza. El sistema de circulaciones permite muy fácilmente programar sectores del edificio para el acceso del público o los empleados en horarios independientes (Salón de Actos, Aulas y seminarios, Cafetería…).

Recently erected urban projects have shown the risks of being seduced by the monumentality and the dubious strength of a city made on big facilities and huge vacuum public space. Those new urban developments need notably continuity with the existing fabric, as well as big amounts of activity and life, not to become residual areas. On the contrary, we understand that the competition offers a great opportunity to consider the area as a portion of a city in which the true core of the urban structure consist on dwelling, retail and metropolitan and local services that would generate a mixed and daily used environment. We believe in the value and potential of the urban fabric instead of large scale monofunctional objects.

es Experiencias recientes han demostrado los riesgos de la monumentalidad y supuesta potencia de los conjuntos construidos en base a grandes equipamientos y los enormes vacíos de espacio público que devienen fácilmente en lugares de escasa continuidad. Entendemos que el concurso ofrece una gran oportunidad para plantear un fragmento de ciudad en el que los usos residenciales, terciarios y comerciales sean el verdadero sustrato dinámico de una estructura urbana que quiere aprovechar la energía generada por los equipamientos metropolitanos pero buscando el potencial urbano en los tejidos de uso cotidiano más que en los grandes objetos.

Due to the financial situation we are going through, the guidelines of the competition urges to competitors to austerity. The proposal turns what it could be understood as a problem into a challenge and makes out of these restrictions the main argument of it. We propose a strictly rational architecture fostering a new aesthetic sensitivity. Therefore, we establish a whole working method based on a refinement of ideas and building system in order to obtain a flexible and open project.

en The education in which the student is a mere listener and a taskmaker or producer is no longer a suitable model for chinese upcoming future. Consequently, the structure of the project is organized as a summary of innovative concepts and “policies� capable of reinventing and reinterpreting the school and the education, focusing on its participative, communicative and environmental aspects. It fosters connection, commitment and perception as the unique way to induce a new kind of relations between students and environment, namely, human networks, nature and knowledge. The school consists on a simple and not hierarchical distribution of the program on four strips. We realized that most part of the program could be deployed under a roof without any walls or elements that could avoid the desirable contamination and relation between activities, classrooms, students, faculty and most importantly, subjects. On the practical side, the project attempts to generate a rich inside of artificial and natural lanscape, avoiding the uninteresting surroundings. Each of the 24 regular classroom units, placed on the first floor, has a square proportion to eliminate any priority on the teachers position. These classrooms catch a soft north light from a top window, allowing to have four usable walls.

The building seeks to maximize views over the parcel, it is organized along 3 bands that intersect around the circulation core. These three bands, that accommodate and organize the different rooms, open up towards different views and orientations, while maintaining a prevailing orientation in the northeast-southwest direction to secure maximum daylight in every room. While the bands configure and organize the different housing uses, they also demarcate the different landscape zones, defining the landscape qualities of the parcel. The parcel is organized in a series of terraces that negotiate with the existing steep topography while configuring the base for a landscape with differentiated characters. The house is a conscious exercise in developing an alternative configuration to the surrounding villas of the neighborhood by developing strong relationships between the landscape and the house in order to produce multiple experiences within and towards the house. The multiple readings of the house mirror the rich experiential lifestyle that is facilitated by the geometric configuration of the house and its landscape.

es El edificio encuentra mediante su configuración, la posibilidad de acceder a las mejores vistas que el entorno ofrece. Se organiza en tres bandas que intersecan en el nucleo de circulación. Estas tres bandas, que acomodan y estructuran las principales estancias, se despliegan y abren según las diferentes orientaciones y vistas, siempre manteniendo una orientación preferente, noreste-suroeste, que garantiza el máximo soleamiento en todas las habitaciones. Las bandas definen no sólo las diferentes partes del programa residencial, sino que también marcan fuertemente las características paisajísticas de la parcela. La parcela consta de unos micropaisajes que se organizan aterrazados en consonancia con el terreno existente. La residencia es un ejercicio de reflexión para el desarrollo de configuraciones alternativas a las villas que pueblan el barrio. Una alternativa fuertemente basada en el estudio, valoración y potenciación de las relaciones refugio-paisaje. Las múltiples lecturas posibles de la casa basadas en la configuración geométrica de la misma y la de su entorno, reflejan la riqueza fenomenológica de los espacios y las diversas formas de vivir la casa por parte de los usuarios.

A wide part of Tokyo has stayed, until now, practically immune to urban planning, representing a magma that oscillates from the low density to the vertical city in an astonishing natural way. The apparent incoherence, or probably the a-coherence, is something inherent to the city and cannot be eliminated without avoiding the death of the spirit that gives it life and character.Tokyo is fated to densification and we must get used to this phenomenon. The introduction of a vertical component in the city must be studied, however, not only as a mere form of densification, but also as an efficient and desirable way of operating and providing solutions to the suffered syndromes.

The Thesis Project proposes an alternative to the urban regenerations processes that, since the mid 80s, have been tearing apart the multi-scalar, a-central and mixed-use features of Tokyo. How can such project be respectful with the spontaneous “urbanism” that has led to what is now known as Tokyo? Can we avoid the permanence and the immutable in large-scale operations?
El proyecto plantea un modelo de construcción en altura de uso mixto como alternativa a los procesos de transformación urbana que, desde los años 80, están desfigurando el carácter acéntrico, multiescalar y de uso mixto de la ciudad de Tokio ¿En qué medida puede partir tal proyecto del respeto a la práctica espontánea que ha dado lugar a lo que hoy se conoce como Tokio? ¿Se puede evitar lo definitivo e inmutable en una operación de gran escala? ¿Cómo puede una estructura vertical de usos mixtos ser permeable, frágil, etérea y flexible?

Las grandes corporaciones, apoyadas desde el ámbito público mediante procesos sucesivos de privatización y desregulación, están convirtiendo Tokio en una ciudad sin una identidad propia. Han expandido su actividad al campo del planeamiento urbano, dejando fuera del discurso de transformación urbana al arquitecto, sociólogo y antropólogo independiente.En este marco, el edificio en altura debe ser estudiado como un posible instrumento de transformación en beneficio público y como modelo de gestión urbana que puede repercutir en un ámbito de la ciudad extenso.

en It’s introduced in an area of extreme unbalanced patterns between public and private interests, of concentration of uses and depopulation. It works as a metaphorical reproduction of the city fabric in vertical or perhaps as an extension of it. Containing all the programs we can imagine for the city, not with the intention of sheltering all those uses which that precise fragment of the city lacks, but with the purpose of causing the bloom of other uses in the area.
