TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY - VISUAL ARTS GALLERY LOCATION: LUBBOCK, TEXAS DESIGN: BRW ARCHITECTS IGOR’S ROLE: DESIGN ASSIST AND VISUALIZATION MEDIA: SKETCHUP, PODIUM, PHOTOSHOP PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BRW worked with Texas Tech University to develop a Master Plan that established a facility needs program and phasing of projects to support the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) on the Lubbock campus. The design team and University administration prioritized the CVPA opportunities, developed alternative funding options and strategies and created marketing collateral for the initial phases of a $45M expansion and renovation of the Maedgen Theatre and a $85M new music building.

DALLAS ARBORETUM CHILDRENS GARDEN - COMPETITION LOCATION: DALLAS, TEXAS DESIGN: BRW ARCHITECTS IGOR’S ROLE: CONCEPTUALIZATION, GRAPHICS QC, 3D MODELING, SCALE MODELS MEDIA: SKETCHUP, PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Garden Education Center, as part of a Design Competition held by the Dallas Arboretum, is envisioned as a multipurpose facility focused on educational field trips, family science demonstrations, and teacher training, all within the setting of a well-established botanical garden. The site location is ideal to become the primary park entry for groups, including school bus drop-off. Special consideration is given to the organization of pre-function spaces for efficiency and safety, while maintaining an emphasis on the visitor garden experience. Flexible learning environments are created with individual STEM labs that open to outdoor decks with demonstration exhibits. Nature is immersed throughout the design of the Center, acting as a teaching tool for both Facilitated and FreeChoice learning opportunities.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BRW Architects joined a team of visionary members of the Dallas Housing Authority to create a Master Plan for the remaining open parcels of land, expansion of park and recreation opportunities and improvements of existing facilities. The design included a series of wood clad vertical elements to give strong visual presence along the two major vehicular thoroughfares. Another positive change was to provide areas of pause in small park-like settings that allowed the local patrons to sit in shaded areas under steel trellis frames on natural stone benches within the surrounding of drought tolerant landscaping. The large expanses of horizontal concrete surfaces were broken down in scale, pattern and proportion and replaced in varied colors and sizes of paver systems. Better signage, lighting, parking control, and site amenities have had a positive impact on the redefined center in a neighborhood surrounded by continual change and improvement.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Anne Frank namesake inspired the design concept of Color and Light. Understanding that young children learn experientially, BRW planned the school around active learning spaces, with ample views to the outdoors. The exterior façade uses color and form to greet students each day. The drop-off canopy is accented by cheery-yellow pylons, while a large front porch trellis creates playful shadows. A bright orange tower flanks the entry door and serves as a sky lit reading nook within the collaborative classroom. With various types of learning spaces, both inside and outside, the children at Anne Frank ECC will have a great jumpstart towards elementary school.

The new Music Activities Center will accommodate more than 1,300 student musicians who participate in the bands, choirs, and orchestras at Texas A&M University. It contains a practice field that is a mirror image of Kyle Field for the band to perform and practice on. The new Music Activities Center will contain the following musical activities: The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Sponsored Student Music Ensembles, Jazz Ensemble I and II, Aggieland Orchestra, Singing Cadets, Century Singers, Women’s Chorus, Chamber Orchestra, and Philharmonic Orchestra.

TEXAS A&M KINGSVILLE - ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES BUILDING LOCATION : KINGSVILLE, TEXAS ARCHITECT OF RECORD : BRW ARCHITECTS IGOR’S ROLE : DESIGN DETAIL & LEAD PROJECT COORDINATOR: STRUCTURAL, MEP, CIVIL, LANDSCAPE PHASES WORKED : CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS MEDIA: SKETCHUP, LUMION, PS, REVIT PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The TAMU Kingsville Adminstrative staff needed a building that was reflective of the historic mission-style architecture of the campus, as well as a denoting an entry for the school. BRW designed a hub to house the administrative staff, the campus police department, and spaces to host events for alumni and staff alike. The design challenges include marrying the mission style architecture with contemporary materials by using clay tile roofing, soft brick colors, and darker, more rustic accents. Along with this, the code required the building to have a hurricane-rating, resulting in heavier structural requirements across the entire facility.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BRW retained ground area by eliminating part of the incompatible one story 1953 and 1979 additions and constructing a three story addition saving campus area and solving egress issues of the original 1926 building. The addition blends with the 2012 wing and takes architectural cues from and remain sensitive to the historic original structure, while providing a modern counterpoint. The three story classroom addition provides 24 teaching spaces and a new competition Gym with 1,500 seating capacity, competition court, two practice courts and support locker rooms and storage for Athletics. The overall condition of the facility is functioning, however the number and size of most classrooms and program spaces are undersized in comparison to the current DISD Educational Standards and also do not meet the needs of the Board Approved International Baccalaureate application. In addition to general classrooms, Art, Ceramics and Engineering classrooms will be added.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BRW added a new dining facility that includes a collegiate-like lounging area for students, and a new kitchen with brand new loading dock. This project also includes an expansion of the existing athletics program to maximize capacity of the school’s growing student and teacher population as well as the renovation of restrooms on campus. The specific project design was created to maintain the historical features currently on campus. It continues the original facade proportions while introducing new materials. Contextually it continues the facade wall while wrapping itself around the baseball field in the back where we had more freedom to introduce new design elements and proportions.

PHASES WORKED: PD, SD, DD, CD, CA MEDIA: SKETCHUP, PODIUM, PHOTOSHOP, REVIT PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The complex site was designed to provide clear separation to accommodate teacher parking, separate bus lanes, hard-scaped edges for parent drop off and a promenade entry plaza for a defined entry point to the large campus. The major classroom addition is sited to enhance the public elevations along the main roadway, Arbrook Street. A large expansive curtain wall façade is in contrast to the 1970’s brick massing, allowing natural light to enhance the daily experience within the new classroom addition. The new design gives the Workman campus a new public identity and a visual connection to the community around the campus. The new facilities include 12 new flexible classrooms, two new science labs, a number of collaboration spaces, a secured central administration entry, and an enlarged Dining and Kitchen facility to address the student population consolidation.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BRW Architects designed a new STEM High School facility for a large school district in North Texas. Our journey begins with listening; the early murmurs of inspiration well up to give voice to your vision: delivering a whole new school for a whole new mind. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The elementary school is situated on the site by anchoring the the wedge of the L-shaped site. As the creek flows through the wedge the buildings long axis hug it, articulating the creek and the North-South axis of the site. The two bar buildings surrounding the creek form a courtyard with the creek flowing through it becoming a place for the students to play and learn. The entry of the school is celebrated by a formal park as the orientation of the bar is formal in nature while the west bar is acknowledged by a recreational field, a less formal park.
