Energy efficiency
The Kyoto protocol Energy efficiency is no longer just an option. The Kyoto protocol has stimulated governments from all over the world to approve legislation guaranteeing a more intelligent and aware use of energy in buildings. In March 2007 the European Union committed to achieving reductions of 20% in CO2 emissions before 2020. This plan of action, known as “3x20 by 2020”, also includes an increase of 20% in the level of Energy Efficiency and 20% of energy produced from renewable energy sources. To reach these objectives a number of real changes are required and goverments are intensifying their efforts to pass new laws and set and regulate standards for greater energy efficiency.

Initiatives in the private and public sector: • UNI EN 15232 standard This standard is used to assess the impact of building automation systems on active energy efficiency, by establishing the potential energy savings on heating and electricity depending on the type of building.
• The LEED® Green Building Rating System is a standard for energy certification and sustainability for the design, construction and running of buildings, created from voluntary contributions and applied at an international level in over 110 countries. The LEED was originally compiled in the USA by the US Green Building Council, a no-profit association founded in 1993. The standard rapidly became accepted internationally and is now the most commonly used certification system in the world.
Reference standards This new trend of stricter energy efficiency began with the Kyoto Protocol. Laws like the Energy Policy Act in the United States have established the standards for our future energy. In Italy, Legislative Decree no. 192 dated19/08/2005 published the European directive 2002/91/CE (EPBD) regarding energy yields in the building sphere and again, more recently with the Ministerial Decree 26/06/2009 (national guidelines for building industry energy certification). Buildings: the main source of energy saving
The increasingly widespread use of heating, air conditioning, lighting and new technology has provoked a considerable increase in energy demands in our buildings. Consequently up to 50% of CO2 emissions can be attributed to commercial and residential buildings on account of their high level of electricity consumption. Today buildings are the main source of potential energy savings that would allow us to meet our goals and protect the environment.

To reach the goals outlined in the Kyoto Protocol, we must start now. Insisting on energy efficiency is the fastest, cheapest and cleanest way to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions. Making buildings more efficient from an energy point of view does not necessarily mean costly changes and system interruptions. Renewing existing buildings can guarantee energy savings of up to 30% by simply implementing easy-to-use services and technology that are already available.

iGuzzini sustainable architecture
In the buildings constructed for the iGuzzini headquarters, the functional requirements and quality of the work environment are expressed through modern architecture based on energy and environmental sustainability and research into the best way of integrating with the local territory. In this integrated design process all the aspects involving environmental sustainability criteria have been tackled with a parallel approach and all the design choices have been assessed with the aim of maximizing the goals defined in the iiSBE (international initiative for Sustainable Built Environment) Institute Sustainable Building Challenge certification system. “The Light Laboratory� Headquarters Dual sheath facade

The architectural project and systems design of the new “Light Laboratory” building is based on an energy savingfocused and environmentally friendly philosophy. The integrated method adopted, together with an exclusive use of renewable sources, has achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions and a level of energy efficiency producing savings of 30% compared to a similar building designed with traditional technology.
Barcelona - Spain
The “il Cielo” iGuzzini lighting headquarters in Spain is the last of a series of constructions that have adopted sustainable energy and natural and artificial light management as the cornerstones of their design. The building, located in the Parque de Actividades Empresariales Can Sant Joan in Sant Cugat del Vallès, is the result of optimised energy efficiency, not just in terms of consumption but also in the way that energy is generated.

The iGuzzini UK headquarters was constructed in Guildford in 2008 according to the principles of sustainable architecture by adopting a series of technical and design solutions that have earned the building an impressive score (71.25%) on the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) scale used to assess environmental performance in buildings.

The UNI EN 15232 standard clearly indicates the benefits to be gained by moving from one efficiency class to another. An analysis of the table allows us to make immediate qualitative and quantitative assessments regarding the benefits to be gained by using an automation system in a building. Especially with regard to electrical energy consumption, by passing from a C efficiency class to a higher class means moving from a minimum saving of 2% (class B) to a maximum saving of 14% (class A); for residential buildings this means moving from a minimum saving of 7% (class B) to a maximum saving of 8% (class A).

LEED Italy 2009 New Constructions / Renovations
The Green Building Council promotes and supplies a global approach to building sustainability by recognising performance in key areas of human health and environmental friendliness. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Enviromental Design) is the most popular rating method in the world for assessing the perfomance of a building throughout its entire life cycle. It divides a building's sustainability features into seven areas that are structured in terms of mandatory requirements and credits. For each area it recognises and assesses performance in points by reflecting their potential impact on the environment. The project reaches different levels of certification according to the sum of the points from the different areas.

Compared to traditional systems, a good control system reduces lighting costs by 50%. Adopting simple programmable logic controllers in a traditional system can guarantee users optimal comfort. Conference halls
Depending on the functions and uses required, customised lighting scenarios can be created in various areas of the building: meeting rooms, coporate welcome areas, offices, etc.
Automatic scene lighting control commands This type of solution uses KNX technology to connect the switch on and dimmer actuators with the control panel pushbuttons. The KNX pushbutton panels allow the various lighting scenarios to be configured according to how the rooms and various other areas in the building are used. The KNX actuators can be used to switch on or adjust light intensity manually at any time. A remote control command makes this solution even more practical.

Showrooms
Monitoring electrical loads after store closures, such as lighting systems, surveillance cameras and other kinds of devices, help avoid unnecessary energy waste. This configuration also allows lighting systems to be programmed during the night.
KNX switch on actuators connected to a load monitoring touch panel The touch panel displays the states of the various loads and highlights potential risks during opening hours. The system interrupts the supply of electricity for certain tasks, thereby avoiding unnecessary waste. It also helps ensure the safety system is operating correctly by monitoring equipment like cameras and lighting systems. The KNX logic module turns lights on/off in turn during the night to ensure the equipment is used in a balanced manner. The combination of various checking systems allows lighting to be controlled automatically and blinds to be regulated according to how the rooms are used, what their position is and the level of natural light.
Presence detectors, light sensors and actuators for controlling blinds. This type of solution uses the KNX range of detectors and actuators for fans and blinds that can interact automatically, so costly, temperamental human intervention is avoided as there is no need for manual on/off commands. Combining light and presence detectors with lighting and dark screen control timers achieves remarkable savings on electricity bills as well as raising comfort and safety standards for users. Schools and colleges
This configuration allows classroom lighting to be controlled automatically according to presence and the incidence of natural light.
Presence detectors and light sensors for regulating light This type of solution uses presence detectors combined with switch on actuators; the system is also fitted with a pushbutton panel for manual use. The entire system is connected via an open KNX bus to make it easier to extend or empower the system. The presence detectors turn the lights on automatically when a person comes into the room or if the level of natural light drops below a preset threshold. When the set time expires the lights turn off automatically if no movement is detected in the room. In manual mode the lights can be turned on or off permanently. When the system returns to manual operation ON mode the presence and natural light detectors are activated automatically.

KNX protocol
Now used throughout Europe, KNX (Konnex) was originally created in Germany following the unification of the 3 standards, EIB, BATIBUS and EHSA, into a single protocol for Home and Building Automation. The standard includes all the main features from the 3 standards it is based on. The interaction of the components, built by different manufacturers, is guaranteed by Konnex certification and the system operates efficiently with no interfaces. Various operating and transmission modes can be used on this system that was specifically designed to offer consumers a trademark signifying quality.

LON protocol
Created in America and used in all English-speaking countries, the LonWorks platform was originally designed over 10 years ago by the Echelon Corporation. It is basically a multimedia system that manages a network of devices regardless of what type of media is transmitted. Its features can be used by anyone and on any system without having to pay royalities. After a series of careful tests the product can use the LonWorks logo too. The platform is currently available on a chip which has been a huge market success.

LMS Quick offers a choice of 10 different presets, each programmed with special pre-configured scenarios for specific locations (offices, meeting rooms, retail zones, spas, churches etc...), including pre-established atmospheres and specially designed light effects. A freely settable option is also available. LMS Quick is an open light management system that uses DALI communication protocol to create customised and flexible light displays that also guarantee maximum energy savings.
