About bout Africa Cataract Project Established by a Turkish INGO (IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation), Africa ca Cataract Project aims to cure 100.000 underprivileged cataract patients in Africa. Since started in April 2007, the project has been giving support to fighting against preventable blindness in the continent. Africa Cataract Project focuses ten countries in sub-Sahara Saharan Africa (Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia,, Chad, Mali, Ghana,, Togo, Niger, Benin and Burkina Faso) where six million people suffer due to blindness. blindness With slogan “If you see them, they will see the world”, world” a campaign is run in Turkey to finance all surgeries performed under the project. The cost of drug distributions and surgeries are all supported by Turkish nation and Turkish organizations. All activities in the project are totally free of charge. It is possible to follow updated ted news about the project and to see live surgery through the project websites www.ihh.org.tr and www.afrikagorecek.com. www.afrikagorecek.com

Africa Cataract Project in Sudan Sudan –gateway to sub-Saharan Saharan AfricaAfrica has an additional role in the project as a logistics center. Africa Cataract Project targets 40.000 free cataract surgeries throughout Sudan until the end of project. Cataract and other o eye diseases are at the top of health problems list in Sudan because of sun lights, malnutrition and poverty. IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation has signed a protocol with Sudan Federal Ministry of Health to provide free cataract surgery. This allowed the continuation of cataract surgeries es for poor in Sudan. The project has been running in Sudan since the first surgery performed in September 2007. Since that time, clinical examination for more than 72.000 .000 patients and cataract surgery has been done for more than 24.000 patients under the project in all Sudan. Sudan

2

To perform surgeries in Sudan, a permanent center consisted of eye clinic and theater was established in Abdul Fadel Almas Eye Hospital at the beginning of project. Since the establishment, the center continues working daily to provide free eye care service for poor. The center receives approximately 40-50 new patients for surgery in addition to 100 patients for control whom operated before. In the center, 15 permanent employees from different branches work including administrator staffs. Recently, in July 2010, a new branch has been established for eye surgeries at Optometry Faculty of Nileyn University under collaboration with Nileyn Univ., Department of Prevention Blindness and IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation.

Turkish medical teams (surgeons and medical assistants) entrusted by TIKA in cooperation with Turkish Ministry of Health visit the project center by turn and work with local Sudanese medical team. While a team departures to Turkey back, another medical team arrives to Khartoum to sustain eye surgeries. Since the project started, about 160 medical staffs from different cities in Turkey have taken part in the project.

Beside the permanent center in Khartoum, Africa Cataract Project organizes mobile eye clinics and mobile eye camps for people who have not chance to obtain treatment in periphery of Sudan. Through mobile activities in remote towns, the project aims to take medical aid to disadvantage people. While people receive eye care and checking in mobile clinics, mobile eye camps provide free access to cataract surgery in rural towns. Since May 2008, medical teams of Africa Cataract Project have visited different

towns and organized 22 mobile eye camps and nearly 20 mobile eye clinics across Sudan.

On going

Africa Cataract Project added a new training microscope to its equipments for the sake of effective training program. All ECCE and PHACO surgeries are transferred to LCD monitor via training microscope and recorded by DVD writer. This gives a better working environment for trainees and make easier for them to understand surgery steps.

All surgeries performed in Abdal Fadel Almas Eye Hospital can be seen on the project website www.afrikagorecek.com due to live broadcasting through internet.
