Portable Oxygen Concentrator Design

How to Give People Who Receive Long Term Oxygen Therapy More Mobility?

O2U is a portable oxygen concentrator carried on the human body with a small volume and lightweight. With a non-medical appearance and reduced size, it enhances mobility and also encourages users going outdoor using it without unwanted aenon. Strap wrap, arm wrap and shoulder strap are supplied for mulple purposes, catering for users’ needs in different outdoor situaons. Carrying extra bag for bulky concentrator is not necessary anymore.

Oxygen Therapy Oxygen therapy is a treatment for hypoxemia by providing pure oxygen for the individual to improve the low blood oxygen level. By breathing in oxygen, the oxygen-rich blood circulates throughout the body supplying oxygen to cells.

The product can be equipped in several areas, that can afford load and does not affect movements or respiratory funcon. The design aims to adopt the user ’s diverse needs while being acve, therefore, the usage can be personalised with few accessories with it. For the appearance design, it looks simple and chic with the organic form.

Aper Ridge A paper ridge is included inside the cannula to solve the dry nose problem. It can capture the heat and moisture in the paper ridge when exhaling, and released when inhaling to humidify the nose.

Detachable Nasal Cannula The tubes of the nasal part can be detached and changed to users’ preferred cannula. Users can choose their suitable cannula and also reduce the waste of plasc.

Assisve Device for Mountaineer

On mountains ranging from 2600m to 4000m in height, the air pressure becomes lower than on the plain so that it ’s possible to not only have acute mountain sickness but also to possibly die. We designed Reevesi to assist climbers to breath normally through lung expansion by lowering internal presTeam Member: Yuan Ting Wang

sure, hence lowering the risk of HAPE.

Design Background Taiwan is a mountainous island. Climbers have plenty of chances to go mountain climbing. However, climbers tend to get acute mountain sickness (AMS). According to a study conducted by Yushan Naonal Park, AMS is correlated with high altude trekking experience. When the altude is higher than 3000m, the AMS prevalence rates are 27%. Therefore, we wanted to design a product that would reduce the chances of climbers geng AMS.

and increases the blood-flow rate. When vasoconstricon happens, water penetrates lungs easily. Those are vital factors to bring to HAPE.

Problem Solving Through principles of negave pressure venlaon, Reevesi compresses air pressure covering the chest which becomes negave while assing the lungs expansion during inhalaon. It can allow people to inhale more air, and get oxygen into the body. Because of this, it slows people’s breathing rate and solves the problem which increases mountain sickness. Design Concept From the point of view of prevenon, we hope to adjust the climber ’s breathing rate throughout the whole process of climbing. The climber can inhale more oxygen acvely from the air they ’re breathing without using an oxygen cylinder.

Prototype In order to fit around a person’s chest and retain enough space to change the pressure inside, we tested, modified and redesigned the shape many mes. With the coloured stripes, the device would match the clothing of the climbers, creang a sporty and funconal design that is different from other mountain climbing equipment.

Mechanism design According to Boyle's law, the value differences between pressure and volume have an inverse relaonship in our product. If volume increases, then pressure decreases. Reevesi uses a motor controlled by our breathing movements to compress space and change the pressure value.

Scenario The climber wears Reevesi outside of their base layers before climbing. Aer that they adjust the Reevesi for the perfect fit and buckle it. When the climber feels unwell on the road, they push the buon and start the machine. It expels the air automacally by detecng the changes in breathing movement. Throughout the change in volume, Reevesi creates a space where is negave pressure so that reduces pressure and increase the inspiraon capacity. It is an effecve way to regulate breathing.

Theme of C- Art: Cityscape

Cityscape [noun] : 1. a city viewed as a scene. 2. an arsc representaon of a city. 3. an urban environment.

For us, it means the outdoor landmarks, monuments, squares, sculptures and also prominent interiors along wih numerous temporary or permanent structures that relate to the daily experience of its residents.

It can facilitate the people of Coventry to connect to the city’s past, present and future by leng them know that they have a say and a role in shaping Coventry’s future.

This is an opportunity to show off not only Coventry’s cultural history but also its present and to shi people’s percepons by educang them about the possibilies Coventry can achieve by their parcipaon.

People could see different angles and each side would have a different atmosphere, so a triangle was the considered to show three periods and also make people interact and walk around the cart. Also showing a landscape of the past, present and future. Kiluanji Kia Henda 2013

Concept 2 When thinking of cityscape, skyline is the first impression. Silhouee of the city looks similar to the sound waves. By combining both, people can experience the city in a whole new way, not just through vision. Therefore, an idea is born that people could interact with sound on c- art.

Concept 3 To create something interacve for the people. The goal is to trigger curiosity in this experience and make people parcipate and create their own vision of Coventry. Using light and sound and aracve colours and also using light and simple materials.

Final Design

LED Cube

Since Coventry is a historically rich and acve city, it has a substanal amount of both interior and exterior hubs of interest. The concept of cityscape is interpreted as a phenomenon that is strongly ed to its meline, which is past, present and future.

Present

Future

In this scenario, the objecve is to create three different parts of parcipaon so that people can relate themselves with the past, present and future of Coventry.

Past

On the side that represents the past, light-eming blocks are ulized, which uncover historical cityscape image from Coventry as they are pressed, and they also produce a different beat.

Present

On the present-day side, an LED screen is used as a music pad, visitors can push different buons on it and the track can be created by their own. Also, the app provides opons of different countries, the default soundtrack from the chosen country plays by tapping on the screen.

Future

The final side represents Coventry’s future, which is up to the visitors to imagine. People can take a photograph of themselves with the thermal camera and choose to make it a part of the legacy exhibion in the upcoming years. When people peek inside through the windows, an installaon can be seen which lets people imagine Coventry’s future.

Inside the c- art, LED lights are employed in the ceiling and mirrors are on all sides of the interior, and scaled models of past and future buildings in Coventry are on the ground. The mirrors create endless reflecons of the buildings and lighng, forming a metaphor for the future of Coventry, which is full of possibilies and potenal. Visitors can also imagine and interpret what the future of Coventry will look like in their own way.

10 Year Legacy

The impact is to emphasise that people are the future. Visitors who are willing to share their photos that they took with the thermal camera will be able to add it in an online archive dedicated to DisCov c- art installaon in the context of City of Culture.

“People Make the City”

From that, the art installaons in 10 years with these photography are created. The installaons will be plexiglass artworks/ artwalls depicng Coventry’s key past, present and future.
