Sustainable Energy Planning and Low Carbon Development Basic Details

Participation costs are covered by SUSTAIN project. The course offers a series of lectures in combination with expert tutorials, peer discussions, scheduled (online) interactions.

Course Objective The course aims to enable participants to: 1) Understand the definitions and keywords of sustainable energy and low carbon development; 2) Introduce the key concepts of sustainable energy planning and low carbon development and their integration in the traditional urban planning discipline; 3) Introduce the main urban planning tools for sustainable energy planning and low carbon development; 4) Conduct empirical case studies to critically reflect and discuss the key topics of sustainable energy planning and low carbon development. At the end of the course, participants should be able to describe and reflect critically on the sustainable energy planning and low carbon development. They will develop analytical understanding of the concepts, methods and tools for the sustainable energy and low carbon development of urban settlement.

For whom? This E-learning course is designed for: Undergraduate students (3rd or 4th year); young professionals; or post-graduate students (Master’s degree,) in the fields of urban planning, environmental science, and other related disciplines. The course aims to deepen the knowledge and understanding of sustainable energy planning and low carbon development.

Why join the e-learning course? At the end of the course, students will get a Certificate of Completion as well as a recommendation letter for receiving two ECTS credits. As the e-learning course is free, this enhances access to education materials on Sustainable energy planning and low carbon development in a more time flexible and cost effective manner. Course participants will have access to all materials as well as participation on relevant exercises and tools on planning for sustainable energy and low carbon development planning.

We will notify you about your acceptance between the 23rd and 27th of May 2016. For this course, ensure you have a reliable internet connection. Also, ensure that you have time for studying the materials, discuss the topics with your classmates, and demonstrate your understanding of the concepts through certain outputs.

Methodology The e-learning course offers a combination of self-paced and facilitated learning approaches through Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment. The course offers a series of lectures in combination with expert tutorials, peer discussions, scheduled (online) interactions, and literature references. Learning methods include presentations, recorded lectures, case studies, group work, exercises, and tools for decision-making. Important Dates: May 20, 2016: Deadline for Registration May 23-27, 2016: Notification of acceptance; sending of reading material & preparation instructions. June 7- August 24, 2016: E-learning course days (9 lectures).
