Introducing new engineering talent to the natural refrigeration industry

I am grateful to the Ammonia Refrigeration Foundation and IIAR for this scholarship. It has “ allowed me to continue my pursuit of a career in refrigeration and is an important experience in my career development. I very much look forward to being part of the solution to global challenges such as the rising demand for energy, global warming, and ozone layer depletion.” Charleson Asibor University of Lagos (Lagos, Nigeria)

“It’s an honor to receive the ARF Founders’ Scholarship. Refrigeration is an essential industry and is applicable in nearly every structure being built. And ammonia refrigeration, in particular, is well-poised to have a significant impact as consumers continue to embrace a culture of sustainability. As someone who thinks it’s important that the technologies we employ be safe, efficient, and sustainable, I’m excited to be starting my career in this area.” Parker Bagshaw University of Maryland (College Park, MD)

The Founders Scholarship

Your Foundation’s scholarship program has grown steadily since its inception, and continues to address our industry’s need for technically trained individuals. The Founders Scholarships honor the legacy of George Briley, Chuck Hansen, Don Niederer and Bill Richards, who established the IIAR organization and always supported education for our industry. Each year the Founders Scholarship is awarded to students exhibiting exceptional character and interest in pursuing an engineering or related technical degree toward a career in the refrigeration field.

2019 Founders Scholars Attend IIAR Virtual Conference

Every year, the new Founders Scholarship recipients are invited to attend the IIAR annual conference. Unfortunately, the 2020 IIAR Annual Conference was moved to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But that didn’t stop our scholars from attending the conference education sessions and meeting the leaders in our industry, as the virtual event provided plenty of opportunities for interaction with presenters, colleagues, and exhibitors.

In April 2020, attending scholars included Savannah Augustine (Utah State University); Nicholas Vogel (Kansas State University); Samuel Koske (University of Missouri-Columbia); Adam Tilghman (University of Maryland Eastern Shore); Hugh Gaevert (California Polytechnic State University); Franklin Ragge (Massachusetts Maritime Academy); and David Rodriguez, Jr. (Purdue University - Fort Wayne). Be on the lookout for these names as they make their way into the industrial refrigeration arena; these bright students are the future of our industry.

2020 Founders Scholarship Recipients

The growing interest in education and the increased number of student applicants across the country has placed a new focus on the Founders Scholarship program. In response to this growing demand and membership contributions, the Foundation Board of Directors has once again voted to increase the funding for scholarships.

In addition, ARF is thrilled to recognize a generous educational grant from The Kahlert Foundation. These funds will allow ARF to provide support for additional students who are eyeing careers in refrigeration, mechanical engineering, and/or fluid dynamics.

ARF and the Kahlert Foundation offer congratulations to the following students who received a 2020 Founders Scholarship grant:

•Charleson Asibor (University of Lagos)

•Parker Bagshaw (University of Maryland)

•Erich Golden (University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee)

•Caden Matson (University of Florida)

•Emma Oneto (California Polytechnic State University)

In a groundbreaking development, part of the award provided to Mr. Asibor was membership in IIAR, making him the Institute’s first member in Nigeria! We have confidence that Charleson will help us spread the word regarding ammonia refrigeration safety in his hometown.

Interest in the Founders Scholarship program has steadily grown and now covers a broad geographical region of applicants extending from the United States to Canada, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. This broad outreach to students demonstrates the program’s value in addressing the industry’s need for technically trained individuals and the opportunity to bring new engineering talent to the natural refrigeration industry. The ARF Founders Scholarship offers recipients financial support, but as importantly, the opportunity to explore a career where they can positively impact the world through the environmentally-conscious application of natural refrigerants.” Mark Stencel Education Committee Chair
