WELCOME 2012! Here’s a wrap-up of the end of 2011 at IIDA Austin City Center! ZEROLANDFILL In the design and construction industry, we find ourselves creating a staggering amount of waste from expired or unused finish materials collected in our finish libraries and/or from job sites & projects that inevitably make their way to the dump. At the mercy of minimal storage and only being able to do so many “home craft projects” with these materials, Architects, Designers, Product Reps. & Contractors, find themselves throwing these materials in the trash- unwanted items that could be so precious & useful to an artist or teacher are simply being wasted. ZeroLandfill is a program that repurposes these materials and diverts them from the landfills, while giving back to the community. ZeroLandfill is an award winning beneficial reuse program that supports the supply needs of local artists and arts educators, while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity. Since 2005, the ZeroLandfill project team has assisted the architectural and interior design community in identifying, diverting from local landfills and repurposing back into the community thousands of pounds of specification samples that hold value for other audiences. Everything from glass tiles, binders, fabrics, wallcoverings, laminates, shingles, bricks and carpet samples. can be helpful to teachers, artists, crafters, etc. With Texas schools in such a budget crisis and the economy being so tight, the use of such a program could not have come at a better time. Austin City Center embraced the idea and held a workshop & CEU for other Texas City Centers to attend. The excitement and enthusiasm was instant! ZeroLandfill Austin held their event over three weekends, where the creative community was invited to come and pick these samples up for free, by the truck load and use them to invent something new and creative! There is joy and energy in the room as materials are discovered, projects are imagined and new connections are made.

ZeroLandfill partnered up with TIPS On Art Kids Summer Art Camp, providing materials for their summer day camp for the kids to create special pieces of art that were displayed at all ZeroLandfill events, The second weekend of ZeroLandfill the volunteer staff put on a “Frozen Yogurt Social” for the kids and parents to see their work on display and celebrate their artistic accomplishments. Zerolandfll Austin should be proud… we diverted over 30,000 lbs of materials from the landfill over 3 weekends. Way to go Austin!

Our most creative event yet, this was a true design competition…make something from nothing for a chance to be the star of the evening. And boy did our design teams impress the judges. With masterpieces built out of plastic laminate, tile, and fabric to name a few materials, these outfits were runway ready! Special thanks to the Aveda Institute for providing hair and makeup for the models.
