New Bills Would Severely Restrict Interior Designers Practice | An Update from OIDC
OIDC would like for you to be aware of a House and a Senate bill from AIA that effectively rewrites the law
OIDC is currently monitoring two pieces of legislation that appear to be dormant – and that is a GOOD thing.
outlining when an architect is required on a project. All current exemptions in the law would be removed. Those exemptions are, literally, the definition of the areas interior designers can practice independent of an architect. Again, all the exemptions have been wiped out! AIA has substituted two simple exemptions: (1) any

buildings more than 2 stories (a basement may be considered a story) and (2) more than 50 occupants. That is a major restriction from the current 100,000 sqft, 2 stories and no occupant limit for Business Code Use Group, for example. If you, as a designer, are relying on the building code official’s right to determine whether the “upgrades, repairs, replacements and changes made on projects…are exempt from hiring an architect”, that option has been stricken from the law in the AIA’s bill, as well. OIDC and other interest groups vigorously opposed both of these bills. If you wish to help in defeating these

IIDA Student Conference | Event in Review The TX-OK Student Conference in Houston is not only our Chapter’s largest student event, but is also the largest in the United States. Here is this year’s breakdown by the numbers: 165 Interior Design Students from across the US attended. 190 credentialed industry professionals volunteered their time to mentor and coach the designers of tomorrow. Among the professionals was our Campus Chair, Lacey Howard. 7 students from the University of Oklahoma attended. 4 of those students received a scholarship from our city center (see below). 2 of those students, Paige McCumber and Kylie Cowan, were winners in the design charrette. 1 student, Jheri Ross, accepted a $5,000 scholarship award from Chapter at the conference.

IIDA TX OK Chapter Leadership Summit | A Note from the Director IIDA OKC just unpacked their bags returning from the inaugural Chapter Leadership Summit and Annual Meeting hosted in Dallas, Texas! Over 85 design professionals were in attendance, to glean leadership skills and tools on how to better our City Centers. The three day event began with the Annual Meeting, where IIDA OKC honored Underwriter of the Year, Bentley Flooring and Volunteer of the Year, Darla Mullett with TRW. Not only were we able to show off our cities "All-Stars" but we had a valuable networking opportunity to meet fellow IIDA leaders from our surrounding regions. During the Chapter Leadership Summit we were honored to learn from Executive Vice President and CEO of IIDA, Cheryl Durst, Hon., FIIDA, LEED AP. Our Chapter could not have a better mentor, guiding us through what it means to be an engaged and ethical leader. Pins dropped as Cheryl took the stage and we were all able to focus on our goal through a unified voice. The following two days left members bustling as we became educated on contract law, membership, marketing to millennials, and the retention of volunteers and leaders. The main goal, in short, was to utilize presented materials and brainstorm on how to better our City Centers. Breakout sessions sparked ideas as we listened to how other City Centers, large and small, have found success. This allowed IIDA OKC the ability to bring these great ideas back to YOU, our designers, members and industry professionals! If the projected outcome was to return better leaders, with a stronger mission, we have achieved just that. Be on the lookout for great improvements to your City Center soon to come! -Jenn Jones, NCIDQ, IIDA, Oklahoma City City Center Director for the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA

CEU True Colors| Event in Review For our January CEU, we wanted to give a huge shout-out to Brenda Smith with National Office Furniture and Angela Holmes with Arc-Com for sponsoring the CEU, True Colors: The Impact of Fabric Color and Texture. Erica Neukam gave a wonderful presentation examining the findings of how particular colors and textures of fabrics psychologically effect the responses of humans in their environments. Based on the research of Sally Augustin, PhD, Erica discussed how design professionals can utilize these findings to facilitate desired outcomes in various spaces. We had a great turnout with over 20 professionals that attended this event at Warren Commercial Interiors, who graciously hosted us in their amazing showroom. Thank you to everyone that came out!
