The Student Conference planning committee has been working diligently to organize the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter’s 12th annual Student Conference, which will be held in Houston, Texas on February 23-24, 2012 at CityCentre. As one of Houston’s newest mixed-use developments, CityCentre was such a successful venue for our event last year, it has the students clamoring to return (www.citycentrehouston.com). This location provides a setting that fosters creativity and design innovation. The IIDA Student Conference brings together students, professionals, educators, and manufacturers’ representatives for two days of academic and professional enrichment. The conference will host 150 students from universities and interior design programs across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Forty talented students will be selected by their professors to participate in a unique charrette competition. The conference will also include tours throughout Houston, small group presentations, a keynote speaker luncheon, and an industry table top event featuring companies from across the region. For more information about the Student Conference, including a schedule of conference events and student registration, please visit www.iidastudentconference.com. SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT: RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR! As we kick off the new year, it is often customary for us to make resolutions about things we wish to improve in our lives and others. We strive to be better to ourselves, our loved ones, and in some cases complete strangers. Lets add one more resolution to our list and be kind to our planet as well. There are many simple behaviors we can change that will have a tremendous reward for us all in the long run. Listed below are some simple steps we can all take that will help in our personal and professional lives. Remember that one small difference has a compounding effect in either direction. - Cut down on materials: One of the easiest ways to decrease environmental impact is by reducing the amount of materials used to create and market your product. - Use environmentally conscious materials: Reducing the amount of materials used is only half the battle‌The real challenge is making a commitment to using quality, sustainable materials. - Recycle Electronics- this includes obsolete cell phones, old video games, and old computers at Best Buy or Target, or repurposed through sites like interconnection.org. - Use your Leg Power- walk or cycle more. This also helps with the resolution to exercise more. - Shop Local- This saves on transportation, increases the support to local businesses and allows you to eliminate waste by not purchasing in excess. - Switch all banking and billing to paperless- No more writing checks, or getting a bill in the mail. - Unplug all chargers or devices when not in use- items plugged in but not in use account for 5% energy waste in the US alone. I hope some of these items inspire you and I wish you the best with all your resolutions this year.
