TAID Chili Cook Off- Recap

IIDA is continually striving to raise awareness and funds to support our legislative advocacy group (TAID) in the business of guarding the legal rights of Interior Design in Texas. Houston’s second annual TAID Fundraiser-‐Chili Cook Off was a lively success at St. Arnold’s Brewery in January. CRG’s Shannon Meek was our inspiring MC with the microphone, while 17 Chili Teams fed us deliciously distinctive chili. Our judging panel, made up of two TAID Board Members and our Top Event Underwriters, CRG and HON were challenged to taste all 17 chili’s and to distinguish the ‘best of’ categories. Best Traditional: Standard Textile & Gensler Best Bacon Chili: T&L Commercial Best Unusual Ingredient: Lashmet Group & The Electric Mirror Spice It UP!: The Kip Co & Abel Design Group Spirit Award -‐ Best Table Décor: FKP Architects Take a look at event photos, sponsored by Tandus/Centiva, on our IIDA-‐Houston Facebook page.

UPCOMING EVENT: Leader’s Breakfast

IIDA Leaders Breakfast Returns to Houston in 2014! The Texas Oklahoma Chapter of the International Interior Design Association will host its annual Leaders Breakfast on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:30 a.m. at the Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria. The keynote features Todd Henry, author, entrepreneur, and founder of Accidental Creative, a company that helps people and teams unleash their best, most creative work every day. Mr. Henry will speak about his latest book release, Die Empty: Unleash Your Best Work Every Day.

Interior Designer and art consultant, Louise Nicholson Carter, will be honored for her 35+ years of work in the interior design industry, and particularly for her leadership and contributions to healthcare environments. As principal at Skyline Art Services, she creates outstanding art programs that integrate with architecture and meet the essential needs of patients and staff to experience healing art. Previously, she was the founding principal of Carter Design Associates, an award-winning healthcare interiors and architectural firm. Louise speaks publicly on the subject of integrating art and interior design in corporate environments and healthcare facilities, from hospitals to senior living. Louise is a founding member of the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID), and is certified in Evidence-Based Design, an emerging field in patient-centered design that is changing the way architects and hospital directors understand the role of art in healthcare.

The Leaders Breakfast series was established as a platform to expose and elevate the interior design profession within the business community, recognizing that business leaders play a pivotal role in the development of architecture and design within a given region. IIDA has engaged regional business and community leaders to share their leadership story within their individual company and the greater Houston community. The proceeds from this event benefit the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Education Fund which offers grants to Interior Design students within Texas and Oklahoma.

Additional information is available on IIDA’s website, www.iida.org. For tickets to the event and more information, please contact the Chapter Administrator at 214-880-1511 or chapter@iida-tx-ok.org.

February Project Highlight by Rottet Studio

The James Royal Palm Interior Design Firm- Rottet Studio Miami Beach, FL 393 Keys The James Royal Palm is the brand’s first hotel in Florida. The James brand is synonymous with the seamless blend of modern, residentially styled spaces and guest-centric service. Located on Collins Avenue in South Beach, just steps away from Ocean Boulevard and the crystal blue ocean, the hotel provides guests with a location immersed in luxury retail, endless entertainment and tropical serenity. The James Royal Palm is a modern tribute to the local area and art deco roots of the historic Royal Palm which was built in 1939. The entire design vision behind the hotel was to transport guests into an era of nostalgia reminiscent of Art Deco Miami in the 1920s through 1940s. Several design elements pay homage to this art deco period including a grand sweeping staircase on the first floor and a “moon gate”—shrubbery that frames the front entrance and serves as an air of privacy for the living room garden behind its walls which features oversized topiary lawn furniture including chairs, sofas and lounges. Many signature design elements original to the hotel were also kept intact such as the decorative compass rose on the terrazzo floor in the lobby, porthole windows in the lounge and the green glass reception desk which was restored and converted to a fresh juice bar. Each of the 393 studios and suites were designed to feel clean and bright with an emphasis on the hotel’s stellar ocean views. In fact, each room has a mirror strategically placed so as to ensure that a beach view is possible from multiple vantage points. Signature guest room elements include a custom designed wooden headboard that extends along the wall to a work/dining niche, featuring a table adorned with a sunken blue glass top; simple and clean white lacquer bed stands; and a floral rug employing shades of cerulean and sea blue. The majority of rooms offer step-out balconies, large windows and uncompromised views of the Atlantic Ocean, Miami cityscape and Biscayne Bay. Features include two swimming pools, a plunge pool, poolside bar, a beachfront restaurant, a lobby lounge, a full-service spa and over 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The James Royal Palm’s permanent art collection is entitled “An Ocean Apart”, referring to the unique micro-culture found in Miami—the confluence of American, European and Latin American cultures, all of whom are unified by the lure of the ocean and the costal culture found within the city. The hotel’s collection features an eclectic array of art from local artists as well as nationally and internationally recognized art world luminaries. The private collection of paintings, photographs, prints, furniture and speciallycommissioned pieces are spread throughout 200,000 square feet of guestrooms and 70,000 square feet of public spaces. The James Club, located off the lobby, features an interactive art piece and game table commissioned specifically for the hotel which features an engraved map of Miami on the surface and includes boxes with models of bridges from all over the world inside so when you align the box with specific points on the table they will illuminate to signify bridging the gap from where that bridge is located in the world to Miami, Florida—USA.
