SAN ANTONIO CITY CENTER A WORD FROM OUR DIRECTOR As the 2013 San Antonio City Center Council year comes to a close, I would like to thank everyone for all their hard work and support. Since January we’ve already had five CEU’s, a project tour, the First Annual Fiesta Pin Competition and Reveal Party, as well as our 2013 Imagine That: Reduce, Reuse, Restyle. All of these amazing events for our Members and community would not be possible without our volunteers and Industry Partners. This Spring, SACC IIDA also had the opportunity to volunteer for the San Antonio Furniture Bank at their warehouse. Our new partnership with them has been great thus far with much more to come in the future. Be on the lookout for volunteer days in the Fall as we continue our relationship with them. I hope that these programs over the past year provided opportunities for Members to meet and network with others in the design community. On behalf of the San Antonio City Center Council, we look forward to seeing you all soon! Thank you, Ashley Voss, IIDA 2012-2013 Director- San Antonio City Center

This year we had our first annual Fiesta Pin contest and reveal. Student and professional members were challenged to design a fiesta pin/medal that incorporated the IIDA logo. The winning designs were then professionally mass produced and sold. Participating members had several different shapes to choose from and three weeks to turn in their digital design files. With all the submissions received, the public voted for their favorite designs online. We were very pleased with all the entries and participation of our members! On April 4th at Office Source's new showroom, the two winning pin designs were revealed. The party had a fiesta theme with margaritas, piñatas, and Mexican food. Cynthia Plumlee won the professional category and Matthew Castillo won the student category. Our two winners also received fiesta-themed prizes. All profits from the sale of the pins went to support TAID. We still have a few pins available for purchase from this very successful event at https://iida.ejoinme.org/saccfiestapin!

VOLUNTEER DAY – SAN ANTONIO FURNITURE BANK MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Many of our members volunteered Saturday, SPEAKER TOUR Feb 12th at the San Antonio Furniture Bank. Tasks included organizing the warehouse, repairing and cleaning furniture, and selecting furniture pieces to be delivered for different families in need. Melissa Ehrman with Koroseal generously donated lunch and a well-needed break for all the volunteers. Through a combined team effort, we were able to accomplish all our goals for the day. The San Antonio furniture Bank has the upcoming volunteer days: June 8th, July 2nd and 3rd, July 27th, August 17th, September 14th, October 12th, November 9th, and December 14th. If you would like to volunteer another day, please contact Beth at beth@givinginteriors.org. Check their website often because soon you will be able to request a volunteer time online at sanantoniofurniturebank.org. Additionally, they are moving to a new warehouse where they will be more centrally located!

RUM

The San Antonio furniture Bank, formerly Giving Interiors, is the only organization in the Greater San Antonio Area whose mission is to provide free furniture to people in need. They are in desperate need of the following items: beds (mattresses/frames), microwaves, dressers/chest of drawers, linens (sheets, towels, etc.), dishes/utensils, and pots/pans. They also have a need for fans for the upcoming hot summer months because many of the individuals they help do not have air conditioning. Please consider donating these much needed items as well as your time to San Antonio Center members with Dennis Kraus this wonderful San AntonioIIDA organization. June 2013 | iida-tx-ok.org

CHAPTER STUDENT CONFERENCE by Blair Vo-le The IIDA Student Chapter at UTSA attended the IIDA 2013 Student Conference in st Houston, Texas on February 21 and were able to meet with different institutions from the Texas Oklahoma Chapter. This conference provided the students an opportunity to engage with professionals and obtain further knowledge on interview preparation, the NCIDQ exam, and other various topics. While selective students had the opportunity to interact with other students in a “4-hour” design charette, other students interacted in workshops which educated students on a wide range of skills from business etiquette to social networking. Students participated in the portfolio review which entailed one-onone feedback from professional designers. They also gained great insight on the firm’s work cultures, environments and a walk-through of other firms such as Gensler, Steelcase, Inventure Design just to name a few. Last but not least, students attended the Industry Table Expo which gave the students the opportunity to become better acquainted with manufacturers like Herman Miller, Coalesse, Daltile, DIRRT and their products. Coming from a student’s perspective like myself, it was my first attendance to any IIDA Student Conference and I was thrilled! I had the opportunity to participate in the student design charette with three other students from different universities. It was a great experience to see groups of students come together and put forth their strengths to work together as a team to create a great design solution. While the workshops were very informative, the portfolio review was one of the events that I looked forward to most! It gave me the chance to get critical feedback from several professionals. Another memorable event was the Industry Table Expo, not only did we get “goodie bags,” but we got the inside scoop on the latest products from textiles to office furniture. Nothing is more exciting than having the opportunity to know our potential future representatives or employers. All in all, I would encourage any design student to attend the IIDA Student Conference; it was a great learning tool and experience that I will take along with me in my future endeavors!

SAN ANTONIO CITY CENTER IMAGINE THAT 2013 – REduce, REuse, REstyle The IIDA San Antonio City Center hosted our annual Imagine That event at the Quarry Golf Club on May 3rd where we went green for a higher cause! This year's Imagine That benefited our local charity, the San Antonio Furniture Bank. The event challenged six teams to create a living room space that incorporated the idea of “reduce, reuse, and restyle.” After being displayed at the event, each room design was donated to a family in need as determined by the San Antonio Furniture Bank. Teams were paired with a carpet representative and a fabric representative and then each team chose a couch from the San Antonio Furniture Bank to be re-upholstered by Mangold & Mangold Upholstery. Next, each team created a coffee table out of either recyclable items found in the SA Furniture Bank warehouse or items they found on their own. Along with the table, they also were tasked with creating an accessory item (lamp, pillow, art). Lastly, the team selected carpet tiles or a rug from their carpet underwriter. Every team came up with a design concept to help drive the idea behind the new living spaces. The day of the event each team was given their “white box design challenge” space and a limited time to set up. The quality and creativity of each room entry was very impressive. Each living room space was reviewed by a panel of judges based on criteria like concept, craftsmanship, and mixed use of furniture and accessory items to determine the best design. There was also a "Viewer's Choice" winner who collected the most money. Both winning teams received custom designed trophies and a team happy hour. Imagine That also had a great assortment of silent and live auction items while attendees were treated to delicious food, cocktails, and an artist who drew glass tile caricatures. Thank you again to all of our terrific underwriters who make events like this possible. Without their help, IIDA SACC would not be able to contribute to fantastic local charities like the San Antonio Furniture Bank. If you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities at the San Antonio Furniture Bank please contact Beth at beth@givinginteriors.org.
