...thursday Student Design Charrette Non-Profit Performing and Visual Arts Community Organization Mission Statement:

While we honor the past, we are looking to meet the current and future needs of our members and of our neighbors. Rewarding new life in old buildings.

Project Synopsis:

The Houston Heights is a diverse, small town community in the heart of Houston where history lives. The Heights was founded as a street car suburb of Houston in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Since the 1990’s the Heights has experienced a revival. Immanuel Church is leasing their old sanctuary building at Fifteenth and Cortlandt Streets to a Non-Profit Performing and Visual Arts Community Organization. The Building has been part of the Houston Heights neighborhood since the early 1900’s. The Gothic Revival building can be adapted to meet the 21st century lifestyles while respecting the historical value. The Non-Profit Organzation would like to create a new use for the old sanctuary building that reaches out to the local neighbors.

Program:

Your challenge is to create a new use for the old sanctuary building and adjacent vacant lot that will promote the performing and visual arts and interact with the Heights neighborhood. The use can be multifunctional but the final design needs to be a cohesive solution. You must write a design statement/concept for your solution and provide necessary sketches, perspectives, floor plans, etc. to adequately and effectively convey your design concept. The intention of the charrette is to be a conceptual competition and participants will not be limited in the ways they communicate their ideas. Each team will be responsible for effectively communicating their design through their own methods. All work will need to fit on a 30” x 42” board to be judged and displayed at the end of the charrette.

Thought Provokers:

What message do you want to convey? What is the relationship between the different spaces in your design and how do they relate to the community? What feeling(s) does your space evoke? Examples might include, but are not limited to: Farmer’s Market | Concert Venue | Art Gallery | Theater | Studios | Educational Programs

Charrette Coordinator: Amy Gilmore, Ziegler Cooper Charrette Administrator:
