CONNECT Kickoff The IIDA Texas-Oklahoma Chapter and its Student Conference Committee are happy to welcome Cheryl Durst, Executive Vice President and CEO of International Interior Design Association, as the Kickoff Speaker for the 17th annual Student Conference. An exceptional communicator, innovator, and visionary leader, Cheryl Durst has spurred progress, driven change, and encouraged the expansion of the Interior Design industry. As the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Cheryl is committed to achieving broad recognition for the value of design and its significant role in society, through both functionality and engagement in every day work spaces and the built environment. Demonstrated by her active involvement in connecting industry professionals, including designers, manufacturers, clients, endusers, and employers, she has worked to promote an understanding of how design impacts human behavior and affects all aspects of shared spaces. In 1997, Cheryl joined IIDA as the Senior Director of Education and Professional Development. Promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer in 1998, she began the task of rebuilding and redefining the organization, which was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and closure due to tenuous member relationships and organizational mismanagement. Despite these significant challenges, Cheryl implemented an aggressive fiscal redevelopment and turnaround strategy that incorporated a series of presentations, critical member outreach, and transparent communication efforts to earn back stakeholder trust. Through her efforts, she was able to revive the association and reposition it as a profitable enterprise, integral to the interior design community and dedicated to furthering the profession of interior design. Today, with 15,000 members across 58 countries, Cheryl oversees the strategic direction of IIDA, curates and publishes Perspective, the association’s thought-leadership journal, manages a team of 25 professional staff members, leads the 10-member International Board of Directors, and directs all outreach and programmatic efforts, including more than a dozen annual global design awards programs, which recognize worldwide excellence in interior design. Cheryl is closely associated with the organization’s vision and mission and is deeply involved in engaging design industry leaders and the client community on the myriad issues that encompass the intersection of design, business, and strategy. Cheryl’s ability to engage audiences with insight and humor has positioned her as a sought-after keynote speaker, guest lecturer, panelist, and moderator at both domestic and global conferences and seminars. With topics ranging from “The Future of Design” to “The Impact of Culture, Brand, and Place,” her presentations explore the value of design as a social, cultural, and economic force. In addition, she delivered the commencement address at the New York School of Interior Design, receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts for her contributions to the industry, and was the Martin Luther King Guest Lecturer at the School of Architecture, University of Michigan. In recognition of her contributions to IIDA and the profession of design, Cheryl was awarded Honorary IIDA Fellowship by her International Board of Directors in 2009. In 2015, she was named one of Newcity’s Design 50, an annual list of influencers who promote and present design in Chicago. Cheryl has also been referred to by Interior Design magazine as “an ambassador for innovation and expansion, and a visionary strategist.”

The IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter welcomes each of you to the city of Houston to celebrate, connect, educate and collaborate at the 17th Annual IIDA Student Conference, sponsored by Haworth. We hope each of you find this event beneficial to your professional growth as Interior Designers. We are pleased with the participation from so many schools across this country; our mission at SC17 is to provide a comprehensive educational experience focused on the application of progressive and practical design solutions in conjunction with insight from practicing professionals. As students you will be participating in many different activities focused on exploring varying avenues of the design discipline and applications. Three days of fun and learning, three days of opportunities, three days to re-affirm this is the career for you! GROW Twilight Fitness No one plans to fail but people do fail to plan. Don’t let all of your hard work in school and career focus get derailed by not planning for your own safety and well-being. This self-defense overview will focus on escaping basic grabs and holds and incorporate elements of personal space and environmental awareness. Finally, we will discuss the legal basics of self-defense and how to use verbal and psychological components to keep you safe. Overall, it will be fun, informative, safe and very useful.

Paul Chappell Central Regional Manager -Sales Support Studio The vast majority of Paul’s professional career has been delivered from the state of Texas, specifically Dallas and Houston. Paul graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from the University of Nebraska in 1981. He has over 35 years’ experience that includes 29 plus years devoted to the practice of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Interior Design and is a LEED AP professional. Six years ago he focused his efforts in Business Development with a Consulting Firm which specialized in Master Planning and Strategic Planning services for Government facilities. The last three years he has been privileged to lead Haworth’s Central Region’s A&D Market Managers who service A&D professionals through education and design consultation. Personally and professionally Paul’s mantra is to find one’s passion(s) in life and to follow that path; while constantly learning and searching for opportunities to give back. He has participated in many charitable organizations and events throughout his career and currently maintains a close relationship with his “little” who he was introduced to 6 years ago while serving as a “big” in the Big Brother Big Sister Program.
Dan Bowen Director - South Texas Dan Bowen is the Director for South Texas at Haworth. Dan is a true Sales Leader with a proven track record of successfully building teams and strategically driving new business. Providing furniture solutions has been part of Dan’s offering beginning with his first job after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin. Throughout his career, Dan advanced quickly from Rookie of the Year as a sales representative to leading departments and then divisions. After 12 years with the same company, Dan moved back to Houston to take over as President of Charles P. Young Company. Dan has lead multiple, very successful B2B teams for OM Workspace as a dealer and now for the furniture manufacturer Haworth.
Amy Ritchmond Senior Architecture & Design Market Manager Amy Ritchmond has been the Senior A&D Market Manager for Haworth, Inc. since 2007 focusing her efforts on relationship building and being a trusted advisor to the architecture and design industry. Amy is responsible for educating specifiers and their clients on Haworth’s vast product offering to guide them towards meaningful choices for their future workplace. She is responsible for A&D sales efforts in the Houston Area, encompassing Austin and San Antonio. In 2011 Amy was the only A&D Market Manager to receive a Haworth Pinnacle award. Amy worked as lead designer at a Steelcase dealership for five years and prior to Haworth, spent three years with MDC Wallcoverings as the A&D account executive in the Houston market. Amy attended Bill Blass founded school O’More College of Design in Tennessee where she received an academic scholarship. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from Lamar University.

Lynn Metz, IIDA, ASID, RID, LEED AP Vice President Sales - Architecture and Design Lynn Metz, LEED AP and a registered interior designer, has designed projects throughout the states and abroad. She began her career in Chicago and then moved to Dallas where she practiced interior design with an architectural firm. In the mid 1990s Lynn joined Haworth, Inc., where she spent several successful years in the position of Architectural and Design Market Manager. Invited back to the Dallas firm, Lynn served as Director of Interiors and Associate Principal. For more than a decade, she focused on marketing and managing interior design on ground-up architectural projects. Lynn rejoined Haworth in 2007 as the Architectural and Design Director for the central region, coordinating A&D sales efforts in 23 states. In 2012 she assumed the position of Vice President, Regional Business Development for the central United States. In late 2016, Lynn became Vice President of Sales – Architecture and Design. Her broad knowledge of interior and architectural integration in project strategy provides a unique level of leadership to client discussions. Lynn passionately believes that through incorporating the understanding of workplace knowledge and socio-economics interior design impacts the success of effective work environments. Lynn has served on the National Board of ASID, (2009–2011). She has received various design and sales awards from organizations including AIA, ASID, Dupont, Texas Architect and Haworth. Lynn earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University. Ashley Barnett Griffith, RID, IIDA, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC,TAID Senior Business Development Manager Ashley Barnett Griffith is the Senior Business Development Manager for Haworth in Austin,Texas where she responsible for A+D, Architectural and Contract Sales. Prior to Haworth, Ashley had a 14+ year career as an Interior Designer and Manager with a passion for high quality design, healthy interior enviromnents and enviromentally responsible practices. Ashley currently sits on the IIDA Austin City Center Coucil as the Texas State Student Liasion. Previosly, Ashley served as the Director of the Austin City Center as well as the Sustainablity Chair. She initiated notable sustainability projects such as Zerolandfill, which supports local artistss and teachers while diverting thousands of pounds of waste from our landfill. Ashley is a registered interior designer and LEED and EDAC accredited professional.
Rachel Ryan Kenney, RID, IIDA, LEED AP Business Development Manager Rachel is the Business Development Manager for Haworth in San Antonio, Texas where she is currently focused on introducing the benefits of high performance interiors designed to address the changing needs of corporate clients, higher education providers and government entities. Rachel serves as a direct link between Haworth, the manufacturer and Haworth dealers. worked with organizations like CPS Energy, San Antonio. Rachel has over 30 years of industry experience and has been associated with Haworth or Haworth dealers since 1988. She has her BS Interior Design from Oklahoma State and MS Interior Design from University of Central Oklahoma.

Kimberly Hulsey Business Development Manager Kimberly Hulsey recently joined Haworth as New Business Development Manager for Houston, Texas after more than 6 years of industry sales experience in the Houston, Los Angeles, and Austin markets. She brings with her a passion for applying Haworth’s extensive workplace knowledge in a way that allows her to provide dynamic solutions and challenge the way clients think about their workspaces. Kimberly holds a B.S. in Public Relations & Marketing from Texas A&M University-Commerce along with a Master’s degree in Education from Texas State University, and she shares her fondness for learning as a certified instructor for AIA and IDCEC. She partners with Haworth’s global preferred dealer network to provide superior customer service and is committed to building lasting relationships with her clients.
Mathew Hollis Global Accounts Mathew has been in the contract interiors industry for over 16 years,. He has worked in Europe, Asia and the Middle East as well as being based in the US for the past year. He brings his global and industry experience to help clients who are multi-location and culturally diverse to develop forward thinking and dynamic workplaces. Mathew works with many global clients to add value to their emerging needs, both in North America and further afield. Working closely with dealers, designers and project managers to develop product solutions and process to ensure on-time and on budget delivery.
Rick Rhodes Global Account Manager – Houston Rick has been with Haworth for eight years, starting as a Business Development Manager in the San Antonio. In 2011, he moved to the Houston market to take on his current role as a Global Account Manager. He focuses his efforts on working with large organizations with global presence helping to align their workspaces with their corporate culture and real estate goals in projects around the world.
Ursula Burns Showroom Manager Ursula has been the Haworth Showroom Manager for over 14 years and truly enjoys her job to the fullest. She obtained her Associates Degree in Business Administration from Houston Community College. Ursula assists Amy Ritchmond with the A&D community needs and helps plan and facilitate large events for clients. In 2011, she was the recipient of the Dick Haworth Value Award in her organization, which is awarded amongst 7,000 employees. Ursula is very encouraging in any atmosphere.

INSPIRE First Impressions Breakfast Susan Szenasy with Metropolis Magazine will kick off the First Impressions Breakfast with an inspirational message to design students about the future and impact of design, and how your first impression is sometimes the only impression that matters. For more than 30 years, Susan S. Szenasy’s voice has resonated as an editor-in-chief, writer, teacher, moderator, filmmaker and lecturer. In all of these roles, her advocacy for ethical, sustainable, human-centered design has been her guiding light. Known for decades as the editor-in-chief (and now publisher) of Metropolis magazine, one of the most influential design magazines in the world, Szenasy has led the charge on issues ranging from universal design to emerging trends of consumer excess, from design for disassembly to the recovery of Lower Manhattan’s communities after 9/11, from design education to the social and environmental impacts of the buildings and products we manufacture.

INSPIRE Firm + Project + Showroom Tours Students will board chartered buses for 3 stops around the Houston area such as architecture and interior design firms, industry showrooms and recent project sites. A catered lunch will be served at the lunch hour stop. Each bus is chaperoned by an experienced professional / industry member and each stop will be hosted by a representative who will provide insights on the tour venue and answer questions. LEAD Charrette prompt #1 Students from IIDA Campus Centers are invited to participate in an invitation only charrette competition. Two design problems are presented this year for out charrette teams to study and solve. As part of the design solution students will prepare a formal design statement, provide sketches, perspectives, floor plans and material specifications that best illustrate their solution. All solutions will be on display for review during the Expo and Keynote Luncheon. Remember: our venues are active work environments so please be mindful of conversations and actions during the tour experience.
Project Synopsis: When companies are looking for lease space in Houston they have many options from the energy corridor, to campuses in the Woodlands, to high-rise building in downtown. 1000 Main is located on Main and McKinney, in the heart of downtown. As Main Street has revamped its charm, many buildings in the area are doing the same. BMC Management is working on repositioning and rebranding 1000 Main within the commercial real estate market. The building has unleased space on the basement level where they want to relocate their office to be visible and accessible to all tenants and create a fitness center and a breakout meeting area for all tenants to use.
Program: The design challenge is to create amenity spaces for 1000 Main, an office building in downtown Houston. BMC Management is working on rebranding and repositioning themselves within the Houston market by creating a fitness center and breakout meeting area for all of the building tenants to utilize. They would also like to relocate their management office so they are more accessible to tenants. Project Synopsis: A large healthcare system has recently purchased an older community hospital that is centrally located and easily accessible, but in need of updating to be competitive in today’s healthcare market. Along with a major renovation to several patient floors in the adjacent tower, they will also be updating the services just inside the main entrance to better reflect their brand and the community they serve.
Program: As the “first impression” to this hospital, the client is asking you to help bring this first floor area up to today’s community hub standards by designing it to feel more like a first class airport club which will include concierge-type check-in, coffee shop/cafe, wi-fi enabled waiting areas with a broad range of seating type options, a small retail pharmacy with over-the-counter provisions, a small outpatient and wound care clinic for Emergency Room follow-up visits, a flexible training/classroom space, and administrative offices to support these services.

Seeing as the interior design industry allows more expression of personality of clothing, but of course should still remain professional.

LEAD Panel Breakfast (continued) Charlotte Simms Charlotte graduated with a BS in Interior Design from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has been practicing design for 19 years, and has a varied work experience. She started her career as a designer for Herman Miller in San Antonio. She relocated to Houston to work at Gensler practicing commercial office design. During her tenure, one of her projects, North Star College in Barker Cypress, a 444,346 square feet facility was published. Other notable projects she worked on at Gensler include Shell, Enron, and Duke Energy. She also worked at PGAL on notable projects at IAH, Pershing Middle school, UTMB, Metro Administration building, and various other projects. Currently for the last 9 years she has been working in the healthcare industry at MD Anderson. Her published works such as Life Science Plaza Research Building, Zayed Research Building, Smithville and Bastrop research campuses, and other projects on the Houston campus has kept her busy. Jackie Barry 2017 marks Jackie’s 25th year as a designer and design educator in Houston, Texas. Her design education began in the Interior Design Program at the University of Houston and concluded with a Master’s in Architecture from the same university, U of H, in 1992. Her passion for design and her dedication to the profession awarded her accolades and awards in both design firms, where she spent much of her career as a Commercial Interior Designer, Watkins Hamilton Ross and PDR. With her diverse perspective, moving from discipline to discipline, she has crossed the boundaries between architecture, interior design and landscape design, all the while continuing to explore design and give back to the profession. She began her teaching career as an Affiliate Instructor, in the program from which she graduated, at The University of Houston. From there she held both titles of Associate Professor and Program Chair at the Art Institute of Houston North. After leaving PDR in 2006, she opened her own landscape design company, wildflower landscape design, all the while continuing to teach and instruct. Currently Jackie is a full-time instructor at Houston Community College, and is still working as both an Interior and Landscape Designer with her own company. Owner/Designer | Wildflower Landscape Design Gary Longbotham Gary co-founded J.Tyler in 1982 serving as President/Owner until 1989 when his wife, Jennifer, joined the firm assuming the role of President with her taking over the administrative responsibilities and general management duties of president. Gary then shifted his full emphasis to marketing and business development. In his course of business development Gary now devotes his full energy to building high level relationships, strengthening strategic relationships with their supplier partners and managing his sales team. Melanie Herz Promecene As Vice President and Director of Interiors for Morris, Melanie Herz Promecene provides leadership and direction to ensure each client’s interior design needs are realized. Her extensive design experience spans multiple market sectors including corporate, hospitality, healthcare and education. During her 15-year career, Melanie has overseen the renovation and design of more than 1 million square feet of office space. Melanie serves on the advisory board for San Jacinto College of Interior Design and is a frequent juror for the University of Houston Interior Architecture Program. Melanie also serves on the board of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Vice President & Director of Interiors | Morris
Paul Chappel The vast majority of Paul’s professional career has been delivered from the state of Texas, specifically Dallas and Houston. Paul graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from the University of Nebraska in 1981. He has over 35 years’ experience that includes 29 plus years devoted to the practice of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Interior Design and is a LEED AP professional. Six years ago he focused his efforts in Business Development with a Consulting Firm which specialized in Master Planning and Strategic Planning services for Government facilities. The last three years he has been privileged to lead Haworth’s Central Region’s A&D Market Managers who service A&D professionals through education and design consultation. Personally and professionally Paul’s mantra is to find one’s passion(s) in life and to follow that path; while constantly learning and searching for opportunities to give back. He has participated in many charitable organizations and events throughout his career and currently maintains a close relationship with his “little” who he was introduced to 6 years ago while serving as a “big” in the Big Brother Big Sister Program. Challie Schafer Rea Challie has a unique educational background in both architecture and interiors. In 2011, Challie graduated from the University of Florida with Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Design. As she completed her undergraduate degree, she determined that she was most passionate about how people interact with interior spaces . Her time at UF built a foundation for the Masters of Fine Arts in Interior Design that she later earned from The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2014. During her education, she completed internships with The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, Working Class Studio, and Gensler. Beginning with her internships, Challie has had the privilege of working with three Gensler offices! During her time with Gensler, she has gained experience in all aspects of the design process, and has been particularly involved with the design and specification of furnishings. In addition, Challie has a keen interest in design research and how it can help Gensler’s client’s understand the true impact of good design. Interior Designer | Gensler

Dr. Sanchez is a native Houstonian receiving her bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University. Her first job out of college was a local cable TV news reporter. After receiving her Master’s degree from University of St. Thomas in Houston, she has been teaching Public Speaking and Business Communications classes for 13 years with The Art Institute of Houston and the University of Houston. Dr. Sanchez teaches Communications, Business and Professional Speaking, Public Relations and Public Speaking. In 2014, she received her doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership. Dr. Sanchez has been consulting with local organizations on topics as business etiquette, interviewing, and professional presentation skills. Her speaking engagements range from entertainment, motivational, and educational. Dr. Sanchez has been nominated by the student body for faculty of the quarter 11 times, winning the title 6 times, while at The Art Institute of Houston. Her philosophy on teaching, training, and organizational relationships is learning and growing through humor; recognizing the needs of specific audiences and adapting.

She is a recipient of Commercial Real Estate Women Network’s “20 Under 40” International Award. In her past life, she was honored as a top interior designer and the best sustainability service provider by the Reno News & Review’s “Best Of” awards, as well as by the US Senate Majority leader and the US Green Building Council for her sustainability leadership in the state of Nevada. While Kimberly didn’t get to Texas as quickly as she could have, she is grateful to be here, and thrilled to call Houston home. In addition to being a Registered Interior Designer, Kimberly has been a LEED Accredited Professional for a decade, and is presently serving as the Houston City Center Past Director for the Texas Oklahoma Chapter of the International Interior Design Association. Dr. Nguyen “Tom” Griggs has been involved in helping college students become successful in and out of the classrooms for more than 15 years. He is an instructor in Verbal Judo and has certificates in Advanced Negotiations and Conflict Resolution from Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business. Tom is a native Houstonian and holds an MBA and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. Combined with an extensive background in martial arts (and a multitude of experiences in corporate life), Tom provides engaging and entertaining sessions for an array of audiences. INSPIRE Educators’ 101 A scorecard for educators to use when providing career prep feedback to their students, this session is a Mock Interview/ Portfolio Review recap immediately following these 101 sessions. The interviewers/reviewers will have an opportunity to discuss overall thoughts and concerns regarding what they saw when they met with the students. The goal is to have an open discussion with the interviewers/reviewers about their overall thoughts on the students work and interview skills in order to bring to the forefront what professionals are really looking for in students and portfolios today.

INSPIRE Keynote Luncheon The IIDA Texas-Oklahoma Chapter and its Student Conference Committee are happy to welcome Suzanne Tick, founder of Suzanne Tick, Inc., as the Keynote Speaker for the 17th annual Student Conference. Suzanne specializes in materials brand strategy, product design, development, and direction for commercial interiors. Suzanne is currently partnering with Tarkett on Brand Strategy and Product Development, Creative Director for LUUM, and Design Consultant for Tandus-Centiva. She has maintained a distinguished career as a textile designer and studio Principal in New York City. Suzanne is known for her intelligent and enthusiastic approach to design in evolving markets, along with conviction to provide innovative solutions. In addition to her work in commercial Interiors, Suzanne maintains a hand weaving practice and creates woven sculptures from repurposed materials. Her work is exhibited worldwide, including MoMA and Art Basel, as well as collected by private and corporate clients. Recently two of her upholstery fabrics, Line Language and Bonded, both for Teknion Textiles were officially acquired for the permanent collection of the Copper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Her recent awards include a 2016 NeoCon Best of Year Gold Award and Interior Design’s Hip Award for Tarkett’s Collections Infinies. Her debut collection for LUUM: Starting Point also picked up a 2016 Metropolis Likes at this year’s Neocon. Suzanne was also honored in 2013 with the IIDA Titan Award, given in recognition of significant contributions to the Interior Design profession.
