[DAY ONE] Around 40 students, mainly from this year’s IIDA TX OK Campus Centers, kicked off the event with an early morning Design Charrette on Thursday, February 23, 2012. IIDA Houston City Center generously underwrote the Charrette, while Page Southerland Page created and administered the design prompt. Thursday afternoon, 5 tour buses left City Centre for 15 Firm & Project Tours with just around 130 students and professors in tow. Buses were underwritten and chaperoned by IIDA Austin City Center, InterfaceFLOR, JMC Associates, MDI Resources, and Teknion. Each bus toured three locations, generally a design firm, dealership, and project tour. Thank you to those who underwrote tours and provided this valuable experience to our students!

Of great interest is the circular two-story sky bridge connecting the Texas Children's Pavilion for Women to the hospital's other patient care buildings bringing the total TCH facility square footage to over 5 million. On March 26th, the signature bridge glowed bright blue from temporary lights illuminated to celebrate in the arrival of the first baby. Through the month of March, the lights glowed in a combination of pink and blue, in honor of all the babies born during Texas Children's first week of labor and delivery services. UPCOMING EVENT: PRODUCT RUNWAY 2012

Spring 2012 | iida-tx-ok.org

SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT: CEs for LEED This month we would like to focus on a topic that affects most of our members and a lot of people in our industry. That is acquiring CE hours for LEED maintenance program. It’s a common topic of conversation and a cause of concern for most. 30 Hours over two years does seem daunting, especially given that most people are unaware of how and where they can acquire the CE hours needed. We would like to review the process and share some resources available to help get you the CE hours needed to maintain your certification. What exactly is required by GBCI? For LEED AP’s with Specialty 30 CE hours are required for the two year reporting period. Six of those 30 hours must be LEED specific. LEED specific CE hours relate directly to the specialty the individual holds. GCBI has approved 8 ways to receive CE hours. These activities are GCBI approved courses, non- approved self study, College and University courses, certificates, licenses and credentials, committee and volunteer work, Authorship, and LEED project participation. Each specialty has a prescribed number of required hours for the seven categories defined by GCBI. For more indepth information please review the CMP guide on the GBCI website, http://www.gbci.org/Files/cmp_guide.pdf . There are lots of great opportunities available to receive CE hours. USGBC provides online courses to help individuals acquire their hours. Most of these courses are around $35-$50 per class. Local USGBC events are another great way to receive CE hours. Another great local recourse is to check with your manufacturer’s reps to see if they offer any SD approved CEU’s and have them present to your group or firms. Your local IIDA city center also works hard to provide several opportunities each year to provide local sustainability events. Each year the Gulf Coast Green Symposium takes place in Houston and offers up to 8 CE hours for full attendance. This year’s Gulf Coast Green will be held on May 1st at the United Way building on Waugh. Please follow this link for more information or to register, http://gulfcoastgreen.org/pages/home.asp . We hope that this article has helped to provide more awareness on the CMP process. Please remember that you local USGBC chapter and IIDA city center are great resources to help you meet your credential maintenance requirements. Happy learning. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: CAMPUS CENTER CONCLAVE, FALL 2012 Are you interested in having networking and professional development activities on your campus? Would you like to boost your design education experience and career possibilities? Are you currently or looking to be a leader on your campus? Make plans to be part of the Houston City Center’s annual Campus Center Conclave this fall to learn how you can develop your Campus Center, expand your knowledge of the design industry and grow your professional network through IIDA membership. More details about this event will follow in upcoming newsletters. Contact Jennifer Trenta, HCC Associate’s Chair, with any questions, jtrenta@ophouston.com.
