CONNECT IIDA TXOK TULSA CITY CENTER January 2019 Every year in July, as our Texas Oklahoma Chapter Board kicks off a new year at our annual retreat, we decide on a guiding theme for the upcoming year --- something to tie together all our plans and goals for the year and drive our direction as a Chapter. It may sound like an easy task, but when you gather together 25 passionate design professionals who all have lofty aspirations for the next twelve months, it is quite a challenge to land on one word that is strong enough to convey all of that energy. This year, we were inspired by the word “unite.” As the largest Chapter of IIDA, with more than 1,500 members in eight city centers spread across 300,000 square miles, it is a continuous goal to ensure we are providing programs and content that are both engaging and beneficial to all of our members – nor matter if you are a student, a junior designer fresh out of school, a firm principal, or a manufacturer’s representative, or whether you live in a big city like Dallas or Houston or a smaller city like Tulsa or El Paso. Exciting things are coming your way to “unite” you with other members of the Texas Oklahoma Chapter. We are bringing you new resources, like this newsletter and a brand-new Chapter website design, and we are bringing you new ways to connect with the 1,500+ members of the Texas Oklahoma Chapter with new opportunities for the live-streaming of our events and programs! Keep your eyes and ears open for more details to come, and I hope you will all “unite” in excitement over what the Texas Oklahoma Chapter has in store for this year! Jennifer King, IIDA RID IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter President 2018 was an exciting year for the IIDA Tulsa City Center. Our main goal with this term year is to add value to your membership of the IIDA organization. We have started new program initiatives, allowing our members to get more involved. Being born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I have always had such high expectations for the future of Tulsa. We’re living in a moment right now that is truly highlighting our cities worth, from architecture to public parks to technology innovation to new business models and more! As designers, we’re lucky to be able to experience and enjoy all the new attractions coming in, especially the revamping of downtown to Riverside! It’s our job as leaders in IIDA Tulsa City Center to find these opportunities and bring them to our members. It’s heartwarming to see all the industry representatives and designers getting excited about the events to come. We have had a huge response in getting involved, whether it’s to host an event, show off innovative products, learn about design related problems in todays age, advocate to our state government, or simply mingling with other professionals. We have kicked off the first half of our term with CEUs, project tours, holiday events, cocktail parties, student gatherings, and monthly membership appreciation events. If we have been able to do this much in just a few months, our IIDA Tulsa City Center Council is so excited to see what else we can do! Oklahoma has always been a state known for its southern hospitality. It has been evident since we picked back up and revamped our city center that our members have been itching to get to know each other, help each other, and grow together. I graduated from college in May of 2017 and moved back to Tulsa, nervous if I would have a community of design industry professionals to socialize and learn with. That is the main reason I got involved, and I have never once looked back because of the love, support, and inspiration the members of IIDA bring to me. Thank you, Tulsa, for allowing me to be your Director of the 2018-2019 term. Nida Hyder, Associate IIDA IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter Tulsa City Center Director
