In the following pages you will find examples of how we
an excellent time to reflect on the trajectory of the Mid America Chapter over the past several years. We have so much to be proud of. In 2014, we were one of the founding members of the Center for Architecture and Design in Kansas City. This group, comprised of IIDA, AIA, AIGA, and PGASLA is a collective of designminded individuals who recognize the impact and value of design in our everyday lives. The Center serves as a forum for discussion, collaboration and the promotion of quality design through programs, lectures, education and advocacy. And in our Wichita City Center, similar bridges between professional associations are underway through a city-wide design week and an annual mixer between the various groups.
excel in our Chapter Programs, Marketing Initiatives, Graphics, and Advocacy. I know that you will see the passion and enthusiasm with which our volunteers and members continue to approach everything that we do, and continually strive to be better. Within each of these sections, you will also find photos of our Mid America Design Award winning projects and quotes from our members, both with illustrate the remarkable design work within our Chapter, and how we, as an organization, enrich the professional lives of those around us.
What does this mean for our members? IIDA has always been about community. But reaching out beyond our own profession not only benefits the projects that we work on, but enriches the culture of design in our communities, and helps the public understand the value of design as a unified concept. This, in turn, drives us as a Board to continue to drive for quality and value in the programs and initiatives that we present. To capture the imagination and dedication of members at every level: student, associate and professional alike.

It has been my true honor to have been involved in this organization in various capacities for the past fourteen years, culminating as the 2015-2016 Mid America Chapter President. IIDA and its members have given so much to me; to celebrate this submission, and our achievements, is the best way that I can give back to them. I hope that you will enjoy learning about our Chapter as much as we have in putting together this collection of our accomplishments.

SPONSORSHIP ANNUAL PROGRAM
As our Chapter continues to grow, we are fortunate to have extremely generous manufacturers, representatives, dealers and firms that partner with the Chapter financially each year. To kick off our annual Chapter Sponsorship program, we host a breakfast in the fall to offer a summary of partnership opportunities, answer questions and update industry members on changes and goals.
OUR 2015 CHAPTER SPONSORS PLATINUM
This year, we’ve made some significant changes to the structure of this program in effort to simplify the way we connect with our sponsors and to ensure everyone gets the most out of their commitment. To streamline the way we approach sponsorship, we have reduced the overall tiered levels for sponsorship and eliminate “a la carte” selections that are tied to specific events. This is aimed at reducing the confusion and communication that occurs mid-year over which options were selected. As it does every year, the Chapter Sponsorship program allows the Mid America Chapter not only to host our great monthly and signature events, but it allows us to support and enhance the profession of interior design in our communities. This year, our goal is to further the future of our Chapter by creating new offers that incentivize membership at the S_tudent and Associate Member levels. Please see Chapter Awards Addendum 1, Mid America Sponsorship Package to see an abbreviated example of our Sponsorship program.

CHAPTER ADMINISTRATION
Since 2014, our Chapter has been contracted with the Center for Architecture and Design to provide administrative services and a physical address for IIDA Mid America. The Center offers three permanent staff members who oversee various aspects of business for all of the organizations who belong to CFAD which include: • •
•
•
•
Management of weekly e-blast, membership contact list and website, under the direction of VP of Communications. Full scope of bookkeeping services, including processing all financial transactions and generating monthly reports for review by Chapter President. Maintance of physical office address for meetings and receipt/ distribution of Chapter mail. Office includes access to business equipment such as a copy machine, postage meter, and shipping equipment. Coordination of master events schedule for all professional organizations belonging to CFAD, in an effort to prevent key event overlap. Provide a positive and professional image to the general public, business community, and association members. Immediately direct member inquiries to appropriate Board members.
Having these resources avaiable as support allows our Board members to truly focus on their goals each year, rather than feeling constantly overwhelmed with daily or weekly tasks that can easily bog down a to-do list or detract from full-time employment. We believe that both the services of CFAD and the physical office have been an invaluable resouce to our Chapter, which we will continue to utilize in the coming years.
“Every time I participate in an IIDA event or meeting, I leave feeling inspired by all of the talented people in the Mid America chapter.” —CHRISTINA ILAX, Assoc. IIDA

“Having my IIDA membership has

been a critical tool in transitioning
Led by Erin Hurd, our new VP of Campus Relations, 2015-2016 has been a year of great focus on our student members. Erin has established great relationships with educators at our regional universities, and set up a team of professional alumni liasons that each have regular communication with with key contacts from their alma mater. In doing so, we’ve been able to evaluate financial support that we offer to each campus center for their own initiatives, and have been able to promote the two annual student events that you’ll read about later in our submission: Design Wars and Portfolios & Professionals.
from the classroom to the working full-time in the industry. Through my membership, I have been given invaluable opportunities for continued learning and growth,
In addition to our campus intiatives, we find that we have excellent participation from our student members in several of our key events throughout the year. Color+Couture is definitely a favorite among local universities, and we repeatedly see at least 20% of our desgin teams are students. Each spring, we are able to assist in placing students with professional internships and/or shadowing oportunities that are required by their course work through our network of campus liasons. Overall, we believe that we are making great progress in the recruitment and retention of members by starting at the student level.

IIDA Mid America Chapter Awards EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT If there is one unifiying theme to what we hear time and again from other Chapters at CLC, it is how to recruit and retain quality volunteers and Chapter Leaders. We are all busy designers with careers and personal lives outside of our IIDA volunteerism, and it seems to be a delicate balance between wanting to be involved, and feeling overwhelmed by Chapter responsibilities. In addition, many Chapters struggle with how to continue to keep important leaders engaged later into their careers, when volunteerism may not be the top priority, or terms on City Center or Chapter Boards have already been served. For Mid-America, we have several different ways that we approach these challenges. First, we approach volunteerism from an organic perspective, allowing members to gradually become involved so that both parties can evaluate commitment and leadership
potential. We continually reinforce our message that while Chapter activities are important, careers and families always come first, and we are here to support all of our volunteers in achieving that balance. When it comes to retaining Professional Members who may no longer be interested in Board positions, we have created an enviornment of mentorship and collaboration where these desigers can share their expertise and experience in a meaningful way, without the added pressure of planning events or serving on committees. Cheryl Durst once told us that IIDA means different things at different times along one’s professional journey, and we couldn’t agree more. Our goal is to make sure that our volunteers have the space to thrive, regardless of their position along that spectrum.

MENTORSHIP LEADING THE WAY
In 2015, Katie Moorman, the VP of Professional Development, took over the Leading the Way Mentorship program from its founder, firm Principal and Professional Member, Audrie Wenger.
Leading the Way pairs ten senior-level professionals (15+ years of experience) with ten younger designers (3–8 years of experience) for one year. Mentees must be IIDA members currently employed at a design firm and active within the design community. Pairs meet once a month on their own, and the entire group gathers on a quarterly basis to perform community service and attend leadership-focused programs.
PROGRAM GOALS: • Develop an exclusive and meaningful program for IIDA members
Now in its fourth year, this program continues to gain momentum and grow. The group started 2016 by attending a panel discussion of five industry-related professionals who answered questions posed from other young professionals in the industry. Our professionals had a variety of backgrounds ranging from partners at local firms, to self-employed designers, and also manufacturer representatives. The relationships made during the program are strong and mentor-mentee meetings tend to extend beyond the year obligation.
“Leading the Way has reminded me
• Foster career development, growth and learning
that knowledge is empowering. As
• Transfer knowledge between like-minded professionals
my mentor shares her experiences,
• Build future industry leaders • Provide exposure of our profession to the community • Grow the IIDA Mid America Chapter
struggles and successes, I see that I can expect more out of myself, my projects, and I dream bigger for my future because of her example.” —ANNA MORRELL, Assoc. IIDA

RETREAT
CHAPTER RETREAT On December 4th, 2015, our Chapter Board traveled to Atlanta, for a weekend retreat and mill tour hosted by Interface. It was the first time Mid America Chapter had opted for this type of retreat, which was actually an idea that stemmed from a winter CLC small group session. We found taking the time away to focus on the Chapter vision and discuss various topics at length to be very enlightening and energizing to the group. It was also a great way to thank all of our board members for their hard work and dedication to making our chapter great throughout the year!
“Time spent together at our retreat not only allowed uninterrupted focus but it yielded several new events, learning opportunities and a renewed excitement in our Chapter’s future.” —ERIN HURD, Assoc. IIDA

LEADERSHIP
“MINI” CHAPTER LEADERSHIP COUNCIL It is an annual tradition to invite Cheryl Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP, to speak at annual members’ meeting lunch regarding the state of the industry and trends that she sees in her travels. In 2015, Cheryl joined us a day early along with her administrative assistant, Elizabeth Cooley, to share her presentation “Organizational Tips for Busy Professionals,” which we had seen at the most recent CLC in Chicago. Both the Board and City Centers were in attendance, and spent the evening chatting with Cheryl about Chapter leadership strategy and relationships with other professional organizations. Following the presentation, the volunteers were broken into small groups for some active brainstorming sessions focused on Programs, Communications and Advocacy. Each group was then asked to present their ideas to the larger group, so that both Board and City Centers could determine what, if any, action plans would need to be outlined for the following year. The evening was extremely successful, not only due to the additional time with Cheryl and Elizabeth, but also for the opportunity to give all of our volunteers the CLC experience without the expense and travel time of a trip to Chicago.

RECRUITING
SO YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED? We are constantly getting email from members and industry partners who want to get more involved in IIDA, but simply do not know where to start. To answer these requests, we host a happy hour each year titled “So You Want to Get Involved with IIDA?” that allows members to mingle with City Center and Board volunteers to discuss the various committees and levels of involvement. Potential volunteers provide their contact information and particular interest, from which we create a list of volunteers to tap into for committees and events throughout the year. If we find particular individuals who are interested in Board positions, our current Board members set up meetings to review future potential and transition. We find that this approach to recruiting for volunteerism allows organic and gradual growth within our committees, City Center and Board. And generally, once people get a little bit of experience with IIDA, they keep coming back for more.
LEADERSHIP “IIDA is about creating a community. By attending events and serving on committees I have continually grown my circle and turned many acquaintances into friends!” —MELISSA SLINKARD, Associate IIDA

ROUNDTABLE
In addition to our other leadership initiatives, we also feel it is important to have an annual dialogue with design community and firm leaders regarding the state of our Chapter. An excellent opportunity to do this is the afternoon of our Mid America Design Awards, when we have both Cheryl Durst and several prestegious judges joining us from other parts of the country. This year, we hosted a private luncheon for 25 guests, which included design firm Principals, key Chapter sponsors, and Chapter Board Members. Topics of discussion included design trends and challenges throughout the country, as well as freedback regarding Chapter content and programs.

BOARD TRANSITION
BOARD TRANSITION DINNER & COFFEE Every year we have a special dinner at which we welcome new board members and thank outgoing board members for all of their hard work. In July of 2015, we met at the newly renovated JJ’s Restaurant in the MADA awardwinning Polsinelli building located on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. We arranged a table in a private room where Julie, the incoming President greeted everyone and shared her account of what IIDA had meant to her throughout the years. Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie, and, of course, the food was superb.
Following the dinner for the Board was a montly coffee meeting when the Past-President, President and President-Elect meet to discuss key transitional components such as onboarding of new volunteers, Chapter finances, and event schedule. Having this support structure and continuous point of contact is a important factor in ensuring a smooth and consistent transition of our Chapter leaders.

PROGRAMS & FORUM EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES Between April 2015 and April 2016, IIDA Mid America hosted 38 events in our two cities. Like many Chapters, we constantly work to find a balance of events that bring value to our members of all levels. As it happened, this year was a year of heavy focus on educational programming, based on feedback from our members.

The planning and preparation changes for each event. For larger events, we allocate large committees that meet for several months of the year. These committees are great recruiting tools for finding future leaders of our City Center and Chapter Boards. For smaller events, a few key volunteers work with vendors to plan tours and CEU’s. Two important additions occurred to our event calendar this year: our CEU Blitz and Wellness Wednesdays in Kansas City. Both items were added based on feedback regarding adding CEU’s for the end of the compliance period, and adding programming that would benefit the work/life balance of our ever-busy designers and industry partners. We’ll detail these events later in this section.

KANSAS CITY DESIGN WEEK Kansas City MO
2015 marked the 6th annual Kanas City Design week, and the second year that IIDA was involved as a Level 1 partnter. KCDW’s goal is to create a week of inspiring and educational events for designers from all disciplines and to share the design community with Kansas City. This year’s eleven events included an open studio night, speakers, tours and a design competition. Our Chapter organized a speaking event featuring Bob Berkebile, Ann Willoughby and Tom Corbin entitled The Untold Stories of Giants. These prolific designers shared some of their personal stories of how Kansas City became not only their home, but the right place to grow their innovative businesses; favorite neighborhood spots and past times; and memorable Kansas City moments that helped shape their creative vision. The event was hosted at the newly completed Hightower showroom, and was a story of overcoming obstacles, following passion, and giving back to the community to help it flourish. Our invovement with Kansas City Design week further solidifies our relationships with the other professional associations that are members of the Center for Architecture and Design, and celebrates the outstanding design community that exists in our city. Participation in KCDW is free for IIDA Mid America, the week of events is supported by sponsorship and ticket sales. You can learn more about KCDW at kcdesignweek.org.

IIDA 5K DESIGN DASH
Shawnee Mission Park, Kansas City Each year the Kansas City City Center identifies a charitable organization to benefit for our annual family 5k run/walk. We feel that it is important to give back to our community and support organizations that promote art and creativity. This year, we had a unique opportunity to both benefit a local college, as well as honor one of the pioneers of the Kansas City design community: the late Karen Gould, co-founder of Gould Evans Goodman (now Gould Evans). An Endowment Award was started in her name in the Department of Applied Textiles at the Kansas City Art Institute, to which the proceeds of the 5k were donated. To honor the spirit of Karen’s passion for textiles, participants in the 5k were encouraged to wear tie-dyed t-shirts and express themselves through colorful race attire. The day of the race, children were allowed to create their own tie-dye creations as a souvenir to take home. Following the run, a pancake breakfast was served for members and their families. Along with gracious gifts from our event sponsors, and personal gifts from members, $3,000 was donated by the Chapter to the Karen W. Gould Fiber Award Endowment.

Sedgwick County Park, Wichita This spring, the IIDA Wichita City Center hosted their 3rd Annual Superhero 5k fun run/walk benefiting The Treehouse, a project of the Orthodox Christian Ministries. The Treehouse was created to help economically challenged moms and children through providing basic necessities and programs. Diapers and formula, parenting education, emotional support and an inexpensive thrift store with books, toys and clothes up to 4T are just a few of the resources The Treehouse provides to women referred to their organization from approved partners. We were very proud to partner with an organization that makes such a positive impact on women in the community.

Populous, Kansas City, MO IIDA Mid-America Chapter’s Annual Student Design Wars offers students a unique opportunity to interact and compete with other students from across the region. This year, over 30 students from 6 different programs participated in the charrette. The challenge was to create a unique restaurant and retail experience for a hypothetical client using an existing shell space in Kansas City. A detailed program, client branding, and specific parameters were provided. The day also included a site tour of the space, as well as a tour of Populous’ newly renovated office building on the floor above. Each team, comprised of students from different grade levels and programs, had three hours to complete their floor plans, palette selections, renderings, and presentation – all done without use of any technology. The groups then pitched their solutions to a panel of prominent industry leaders. Of the seven teams, one was selected by the panel to take home the $2,000 Mid-America student award.

11.2 – 11.5.15 CEU BLITZ
Kansas City, MO While we all strive to be up-to-date on our CEU’s for the compliance period, sometimes it comes down to the last minute and there is a bit of a scramble. IIDA Mid America to the rescue! For the first time, we hosted a week long CEU Blitz to allow our members to cram in up to 9 last minute credits. We solicited vendors to host a lunch or happy hour each day that addressed different topics such as Workplace Wellbeing, ADA signage, Cradle to Cradle design, Color Theory and more. We did have to cancel one event because it fell on the evening of Monday, November 2nd, where at the same time, 800,000 people gathered downtown to celebrate our World Champion Kansas City Royals. Needless to say, none of us were focused on design that day, but rather the pride we felt as our entire city came together around our incredible team. Barring any future history-making sports events, we plan to bring the CEU Blitz back as a staple to our yearly calendar and will stretch it out to one event per week for a month.

ANNUAL MEETING Lidia’s Kansas City
In 2015 we hosted our fourth annual meeting at one of Kansas City’s most famous restaurants. This event brought together 90 members from both City Centers and provided an opportunity to reconnect, be inspired, and enjoy great food. Cheryl Durst stopped by to share her thoughts on generations. The topic sparked a lot of interesting discussions following the luncheon between members of all generations. This event is free to members, and a favorite of many.
“I love the Annual Membership Meeting - finding out what is happening in the industry and around the world. And getting to interact with the incredible Cheryl Durst is so inspiring. It makes membership worth it! —MARY DOLLIVER, Associate IIDA

WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS Kansas City, MO
Coming off of the buzz of the holidays, IIDA Kansas City wanted to host a series of events that would promote wellbeing and potentially help support specific New Year’s resolutions. We kicked-off 2016 with the first annual Wellness Wednesdays. Throughout the month of February, IIDA focused on events that promoted personal wellness through physical, mental and emotional activities. Each Wednesday designers we able to participate in activities which included the following; ERGONOMICS IN THE WORKPLACE Humanscale hosted a presentation regarding office ergonomics and understanding workplace trends to elevate the awareness of ergonomic issues and identifying solutions to improve them. YOGA A privately lead Vinyasa Yoga class which taught balancing poses that help create strength and flexibility, along with breathing techniques that leave the participant feeling stronger and more relaxed. FITNESS & NUTRITION A Fitness and Nutrition class which taught High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) for increased cardiovascular strenth and muscle tone. The class concluded with a nutrition tutorial, offering dietary tips and tricks to maintain a healthy lifestyle. STRESS MANAGEMENT Caylen Sunderman, MFT, presented an inspirational lecture on life balance, stress management, relationship health, and personal fulfillment. This event left designers feeling motivated and refreshed to achieve their personal best. Whether designers participated in one, or all four events, we felt Wellness Wednesdays gave them a great platform to a healthier year. We look forward to continuing this series of events in years to come.

MEMBERSHIP MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS In the last year, we’ve seen wonderful growth, not only in membership as a whole, but also in the bond between Wichita and Kansas CIty City Centers. Our ability to share ideas for events, ask advice and celebrate together at Chapter events only builds excitement and the feeling of a holistic Chapter. There is a great energy in the Mid America Chapter right now and that extends throughout our membership process—from marketing to new members, welcoming those who join, and then furthering the conversation with current and other potential members throughout the year at various IIDA and CFAD events.
“A few months prior to my move to Kansas City, I changed my City Center so I would start getting Mid America event updates. I was able to meet and get valuable insight on the KC Design community from IIDA members. In fact, I believe most, if not all of my job leads were from the IIDA Job Board.” —MICHELLA ESTRADA, Associate IIDA

Want to join IIDA Mid America? Each fall, as IIDA Headquarters kicks off their marketing campaign for the following year, our City Centers start planning their annual Membership Drive events. In Kansas City, we changed up Trivia Night by moving it to January and hosting it at a local burger and bar joint that is known for its trivia contests, Westport Flea Market. More than 60 people came out to compete on teams of 5-6 people. This year’s trivia ran the gamut, with everything from Disney movie trivia to music mashups. Wichita hosted a event titled Have an IPA with IIDA at Central Standard Brewing where current members who brought prospective members were reimbursed the event fee. In both events, the winning individual or team won a free IIDA membership (in the team setting the prize could be used for one person or split and applied to any new members). These events are a great way to get in front of the design community at the beginning of the year and remind them to renew for the following yea—and encourage new members to apply!
Welcome to the Chapter! To welcome new members, our VP of Membership, Amy Wright, continued the tradition of our New Member Coffee event once a month with a new twist—all current and future members are welcome to join in on the fun! Once Amy receives an updated list from HQ, she sends an invite out to all new members to sit down together for our standing coffee date. We have reserved the upstairs space of a local coffee shop to accommodate any new and current members who wish to partake, and the turnout has exceeded our expectations. This not only provides an opportunity for new members to meet current members, but also a chance for everyone to learn more about the Mid America Chapter and upcoming events.

Value: the importance, worth, or usefulness of something. In an effort to increase membership, we constantly strive to show the ongoing and increasing value of an IIDA membership within the design community. This not only keeps current members engaged and coming back year after year, but also attracts new members. One of the ways we’ve accomplished this is through providing free/reduced price tickets to all City Center and Chapter events, and now with our partnership with the Center for Architecture and Design, those events as well. If a member in the Wichita City Center or a member in Kansas City were to attend every event in both the City Center and Chapter well, just check out the diagram to the right...

WICHITA EVENTS non-member $400 member savings $240
member $160
KANSAS CITY EVENTS non-member $370 member savings $285

Tangible Value, not just dollars and cents. Another way we’ve provided value to our members are through career building events such as our Professional Photography opportunity. We noticed that while many of our senior-level members had polished, professional headshots, many of our younger members were using cropped snapshots for professional purposes such as proposals, presentations and LinkedIn pages. We now offer members the opportunity to get their photo snapped—for free—by photographers hired by the Chapter. With more than 50 members participating in Kansas CIty and 15 in Wichita, we heard great feedback and will continue to host this in the future.

Check us out. For a Chapter to keep buzzing, it’s all about the communication. The Mid America Chapter promotes all of its events through a Chapter website, email newsletters and social networking sites. In 2016, Mid America plans to redesign the website again in an effort to implement many of the Headquarters website updates for a clear, consistent message to members and the design community. We are also adding a “Find A Firm” section of the website to help Firm Sponsors of IIDA gain further recognition as well as highlighting their commitment to supporting IIDA and the design community as a whole.
Our website is user friendly and easy to navigate while showing off the work of our Members. The homepage is a rotating series of projects that were winners at the Mid America Design Awards (MADA). Platinum Chapter sponsors are featured at the bottom of the screen and our keywords, “Participate. Support. Benefit” are highlighted.
Visitors to the site can use menus on the left side or click on colored tiles over the feature image to visit pages on Membership, Sponsorship, Events, Photo Galleries and Resources. Click on ‘Our Chapter’ and you’ll see the smiling faces of our board members along with a letter from the current Chapter President.
A clear calendar layout shows what’s going on in coming months. Click on an event and you’re able to find information and access to ticket sales. Want to see more of our fabulous website? Check out iidamidamerica.org.

You’ve got mail. As with most Chapters, we struggle with a mix of feedback on emails. We hear equal parts:
1. I get way too many emails from IIDA, I never read them anymore. 2. I didn’t get that email! In an effort to streamline and organize, our VP of Communications, Kim Crane, started sending Chapter emails every Tuesday afternoon. Members can expect an email once a week highlighting the next three or four upcoming events, as well as information relevant to the Chapter at that time (What’s happening with the Missouri Coalition? When do MADA tickets go on sale?) The email also highlights past events, links to photo galleries and thanks participants. The bottom of each email features a highlighted Chapter Sponsor and a list of all Chapter Sponsors including links to company homepages. While we know we’ll never find the perfect balance of too many/not enough emails, members have shared that they like knowing exactly when they can expect the email and what to look for.

Like us. We want to be where the conversation is taking place and where our members are spending time, therefore social media has become a BIG part of our Chapter communication in the last few years. Between Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, we’ve found a great medium to reach our members and the larger design community.
Our Mid America Facebook page (225 likes) is a constant source of chatter on upcoming events and industry announcements.
Both City Centers have a Facebook page for their largest event, the Wichita Superhero 5k (270 likes) and KC’s Color+Couture (838 likes) providing event specific announcements, photos and ticket information. Events like Color+Couture have developed a cult-like following from community members, and this page is a great way to bring them in, introduce them to IIDA, and send them over to our website for more information.

EXCELLENCE IN GRAPHICS We’re lucky to have wonderfully creative Communication Chairs in both City Centers who create beautiful, energetic graphic identities for our events. It’s important to create a consistent brand that can be translated to a variety of products and mediums year after year, especially for our larger events. The Color+Couture graphics change each year to reflect the event, however the logo stays the same (in font and proportion) from year to year. This consistent message gets our members attention and keeps them coming back.
We’ve embraced IIDA’s Chapter Branding a few years ago, and continue to push ourselves with what we do with it. We’ve fully implemented our logo in all graphics, websites and printed materials. In addition to event specific graphics, we’ve had IIDA Mid America notebooks, specialty mugs, umbrellas and water bottles featuring the chapter logo created as member gifts. We love to see members around the community proudly carrying their IIDA swag.
“I was so excited to receive my IIDA Mid America umbrella at the Annual Meeting this year! What a creative and practical gift. I will take it with me to NeoCon this year. The simple graphic is a great way to represent IIDA, even in the rain!” —KELSEY MAHONEY, IIDA

DESIGN WARS
4801 MAIN STREET, KANSAS CITY, MO The third annual Student Design Wars event was held on September 18th, 2015 at the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library. Because the event is only in its third year, it was important to keep the graphic “look” a consistent with previous years. The geometric pattern changes positioning and color every year to keep things looking fresh. The graphics were translated into a variety of formats including posters, postcards, and award certificates designed for the winners.
“Design Wars was so impactful in many ways to challenge myself to collaborate with new people in a fast paced environment. I think it’s invaluable for designers to get out of their comfort zone and in to a new environment with a new team.”

Shawnee Mission Park, Kansas The Kansas City City Center was excited to support the Karen W. Gould Fiber Department Project Award with all of the proceeds of the Design Dash this year. The Gould family created this award fund as a way to honor Karen’s contributions and influence on the design community in Kansas City and beyond. An Endowment Award is given in the Department of Applied Textiles at the Kansas City Art Institute. To honor the spirit of Karen’s passion for textiles, participants in the 5k were encouraged to make and wear tie-dyed t-shirts, children also made tie-dyed t-shirts at the race. We combined this tie-dyed theme with our classically branded IIDA 5k logo. Posters and postcards were designed, printed, and then distributed throughout the Kansas City design and arts community. Medals were also branded with the theme and logo and given to winning participants.

IIDA SUPERHERO 5K
Sedgwick County Park, Wichita The Wichita City Center’s 5k committee included a graphic designer who was in on the planning process from the beginning. Our first task was to develop a timeless logo that we could carry throughout the, hopefully, many years to come for consistency and brand recognition for the event. Our IIDA Superhero 5K logo was inspired by the vintage Wonder Woman and Superman’s logos, melding the two into one new logo with plans to tweak both logo and shirt colors throughout the later years of the race.
The concept for Everyday Heroes lent itself well to supporting our cause Rainbows United, which enhances the lives of children with special needs. They are the true heroes as they battle disabilities and struggles throughout their everyday life. The last mile of the race had Everyday Hero signs to help guide participants to the finish line, and to give inspiration and perspective to each runner as they passed by.
Sticking with the superhero theme, the 5K poster was designed to mimic a comic book cover complete with a city skyline and superhero. This was used as a digital poster, for our 5k Facebook page and eblasts, as well as printed posters hung in gyms, running clubs, yoga studios, etc. throughout the city of Wichita and surrounding small towns. Wichita has a large running community and the number of races in the city is astronomical, the committee knew that a fun theme and consistent graphics were the way to catch the wandering eyes of runners making a decision on their race calendar for the year.
Shirts for volunteers and for runners were designed using orange, teal and seafoam. Along with these custom design t-shirts, many participants sported super hero themed costumes.

MID AMERICA DESIGN AWARDS (MADA) The Gallery Event Space
The graphic concept for MADA was based on the idea formulating the progressive design in our industry into a visual icon of the ‘futuristic city’ graphic. The cityscape is built with simplistic forms to read as abstract, not representing either of our two City Centers. The futuristic city was a way to give homage to creative design and the built environment which is what the MADA awards themselves ultimately represent. The cityscape concept has since been used for each MADA with a new color scheme.

COLOR+COUTURE
Starlight Theatre, Kansas City The theme for Color+Couture 201, “Cityscapes”, stemmed directly from the 10th year anniversary for Color+Couture, and we wanted to pay tribute to our great City. Each team was assigned an iconic building or landmark in Kansas City to use as their design inspiration. We also updated our graphic backdrop by adding the Kansas City skyline in sketchy contrast to the logo itself. The skyline graphic was then translated onto posters, flyers, tickets, judging cards and event trophies. The trophies took the form of a shuttlecock as a nod to the iconic Nelson Atkins lawn sculptures. Additionally, the Color + Couture Facebook page has over 850 page “likes”, and acts as a platform for anyone interested in event to easily find information and updates. Creating graphics that coordinated with the Facebook page became just as important as traditional posters and fliers. A “banner” for the Facebook page is now something created with every event that we promote.

POST-NEOCON PECHA KUCHA Think Big Partners, Kansas City MO
With a new concept for our Post-NeoCon event this year, we knew that we needed a graphic treatment that would explain the concept for anyone who was not familiar with the presentation style. A Pecha Kucha is a presentation of 20 slides done at 20 seconds each slide. The concept is trademarked by Pecha Kecha, so the graphic also needed to work within the allowable framework for the brand. This event was a huge success for a first time out, and we feel that the communication and graphics were definitely integral to the introduction. And since it became evident that there are various interpretations on how to pronounce “pecha kucha” we affectionately referred to it as “PostNeoCon PK”.

NEW MEMBER COFFEE DATE Thou Mayest, Kansas City MO
New Member Coffees were a monthly program that we started several years ago in order to welcome newbies and introduce them to a few key members of our Chapter Board. Over time, more and more members started attending to welcome new members that this became an open invitation for all members to join. As participation grew, we needed a graphic to correspond that could be used both in the weekly e-blast and as table signage at the coffee shop. The logo was screen printed onto a piece of back-painted glass and a local fabricator made an attractive wooden stand to complete the look.

IIDA Mid America Chapter Awards EXCELLENCE IN CHAPTER ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES
CHAPTER ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES For us, advocacy is truly where the rubber meets the road. Nothing that we do matters unless we are constantly advocating for our profession and the brilliant work that our members do every day. IIDA Mid America has the advantage of covering only two states. However, each state is different in their approach to legislation and professional registration. This challenges us to be inclusive and provide benefits for our members that currently aren’t covered by laws
governing the profession. Education and action are our tools and designers from both states participate in learning and advocating for interior design legislation. We continue to create awareness of the importance of advocacy and with that momentum, we aim to bring effective change to both Kansas and Missouri. By being advocates for our profession, for our industry, and for the communities we live in, we’re telling people who interior designers are, and what we’re capable of.
“Advocacy Day is a great opportunity for designers to educate legislators about what we do, and for us to learn how to affect change.” —MEGAN RYKEN, IIDA

Advocates for our profession. The Mid America Chapter is composed of two states: Kansas and Missouri, both of which have a different landscape as it relates to interior design legislation. Since 1998, Missouri has had a Practice Act, and an active Coalition and lobbyist that regularly engage Missouri’s legislators and Division of Professional registration. In Kansas, the prospect of a Coalition is just beginning. In addition, the state of Missouri is also home to the Gateway Chapter in St. Louis, who also have a vested interest in legislative activities and the success of the Missouri Coalition for Interior Design. In this way, we are extremely fortunate to be able to team up with another Chapter in order to advocate for our profession from both sides of our state at our annual Advocacy Day in Jefferson City.
2016
ADVOCACY DAY JEFFERSON CITY, MO
This year’s Advocacy Day included a group lunch with the two Chapters, at which we were briefed by our lobbyist, Kyna Iman, on recent bills that could potentially affect interior designers. After lunch, the two Chapters broke to meet with legislators from our respective sides of the state. Our State Representative from Kansas City, Jeremy LaFaver, was kind to spend time with us and even gave us an extremely kind introduction on the House Floor. We then met with our Senator, Ryan Silvey, who provided us with a tour and a brief overview regarding the process of how a bill becomes law. The day concluded with a reception in the Capital rotunda for all legislators to stop and visit with both Chapters after meeting previously over the course of the day. Each year, this event leaves us energized and inspired to continue our efforts to make an impact on the state and local governments in which we practice.

Advocates for our industry. A key component to advocating for the future of our profession is educating students at a young age about the possibilities of design careers that are available to them. While many middle schools and high schools have art programs, and occasionally architectural drafting courses, there is a lack of exposure to architecture and design prior to entering college. As a group in Kansas City, the Center for Architecture and Design’s aim is to change this. And for the first time in 2015, representatives from each of the professional associations: AIA, IIDA, AIGA, and PGASLA began an Education Outreach program at the Ewing Marion Kauffman School. Over this 12-week program, professionals met with a group of 8th graders two days a week for one hour after school to give them an overview of each profession. Students learned about each of the design disciplines, and the education required to pursue a career in that field. After they’d received a primer on each, students were divided into groups and tasked with designing an “outdoor classroom” that would utilize concepts from Architecture, Interior Design, Graphic Design and Landscape Design. Design professionals guided each group and assisted in the creation of deliverables for the final presentation. At the end of the 12-week program, students were asked to present the design concepts for their classrooms to a large group of design professionals, teachers, and parents. The excitement and humor with which the students talked about their projects was far more rewarding than we ever imagined. Classes for the 2016 Education Outreach program recently started again, and we have another group of bright, energetic students that are eager to learn about design careers and execute their projects.
“The Outreach Program exposes middleschool students in the urban core to a field that many of them didn’t even know EXISTED. The power to design one’s own environment resonated with many of them both intellectually AND emotionally. We were told by one parent that their son has been forever changed by the program and in a short time has fallen in love with design. We cannot imagine a better result of our group’s efforts.” —ASHLEY SADOWSKI, AIA 54 |

Advocates for our profession, again. Advocacy matters. But many designers don’t know why or how it applies to them. Even though this is not a problem exclusive to IIDA Mid America, we jumped at the chance to have Emily Kluczynski and Abby Rathburn from IIDA Headquarters present the “Why Advocacy Matters” CEU in March. (And we may have plied them with some Kansas City bbq as a little extra incentive as well.) The happy hour and CEU was well attended by some new faces and designers that needed a refresher on advocacy. After the presentation, several attendees asked our VP of Advocacy follow-up questions about the specifics of Missouri law, and how it affects them. One question in particular, Why does it matter if I’m registered, if I work at a large firm where architects stamp my drawings?, was very specific to our Kansas City market and has been a stumbling block for designers seeking registration. This was rebutted by, if we ever aim to have a practice act with signing and stamping privileges, we must have higher registered designer numbers. If we do get a practice act enacted in Missouri, this can only help firms in the long run... how many times has an architect been out of the office and you needed them to stamp a drawing that you were basically the PM on? Lightbulbs. We greatly appreciated Emily and Abby’s visit and know that everyone left the CEU with a little bit more knowledge about advocacy, and what we need to do to move interior design legislation forward. One can hope that this is the catalyst for stronger registration in Missouri and the beginnings of advocacy for Kansas designers.
“I’m really proud of the work we’ve accomplished as a team to support the advancement of students and professionals in the field of interior design. ” —KATE WARD, Industry IIDA
