EXECUTING THE VISION OF SMART CITIES Smart Living City Dubai 2014 is an event hosted by Tasweek and Inside Investor under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, to accelerate smart business programs in Dubai. Dubai has set the vision to become the smartest city in the world over the next 3 years. The goal of the event is to bring together high-level representatives from startups, investors, foundations, researchers and cities; including participants from the Government of Dubai, Stanford University, MIT, 500 Startups, Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, Cisco, Microsoft and Hamdan bin Mohammed SMART University (HBMSU), Dubai Economic Council, among others. The event will be broken into 3 main themes: 1) High level participants in panels and discussions that will share their perspectives on current urban issues and potential solutions. 2) Showcase of “best in class” local and international SMART startups. 3) Multiple workshops for participants, such as the private workshop “Scaling and Excellence” for the leaders of Dubai, led by Robert Sutton; and other workshops for the public hosted by Microsoft, MIT media lab, 500 Startups, investors and mentors out of Silicon Valley.

As the Director General of Dubai Municipality, Mr. Lootah manages this civic body, assisted by a team of six Assistant DG and 32 Head of Departments. Mr. Lootah played a significant role in setting up the UAE Engineers Society, and held the post of the Chairman from 1992 to 1996. In his capacity as the Director General of Dubai Municipality, Mr. Lootah chairs and sits on the board of a number of semi governmental organizations, he is a also a member of The Executive Council of Dubai Government, and heads some committees at the said council. Mr. Lootah is also an active member of numerous governmental and non-governmental boards, committees and councils both on the local and international level.
H.E Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri | Minister of Economy, UAE
His Excellency Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori has been appointed as Minister of Economy in the UAE, effective 17th of February, 2008. His Excellency Sultan holds a Bachelor’s degree (B. Sc.) in Industrial Engineering & Management Systems from Arizona State University - USA . He also has a Diploma in Computer System Analysis from the Institute of Computer Technology, Los Angeles, California - USA.
Robert I. Sutton | Professor of Management Science at the Stanford Engineering School
Robert Sutton is Professor of Management Science at the Stanford Engineering School and researcher in the field of Evidence-based management. Sutton is also a NY Times best-selling author & speaker. He received his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from The University of Michigan & has served on the Stanford faculty since 1983. Nowadays he is an IDEO Fellow and a Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Dr. Mansoor Al Awar | Chancellor of Hamdan Bin Mohammed SMART University
Dr. Mansoor Al Awar is currently the Chancellor of Hamdan Bin Mohammed SMART University (HBMSU) as well as Honorary Visiting Fellow in Organization and Information Management at University of Bradford, UK; Adjunct Professor at the University of Salford, UK; member of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ); and is a Certified International Assessor for the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Awards. He was awarded a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Wales, UK, in 1994.
Dr. Mitchell Joachim | Associate Professor at NYU and Co-Founder of Terreform ONE
Dr. Mitchell Joachim is an architect and urban designer in New York City. He formerly worked at Gehry Partners, and Pei Cobb Freed. He is a TED Senior Fellow and has been awarded fellowships with Moshe Safdie and Martin Society for Sustainability, MIT. He was chosen by Wired magazine for “The Smart List: 15 People the Next President Should Listen To”. Rolling Stone magazine honored Mitchell in “The 100 People Who Are Changing America”. He co-authored the books, “Super Cells: Building with Biology” and “Global Design: Elsewhere Envisioned”. He earned a Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MAUD Harvard University, M.Arch. Columbia University.

With over 25 yeas of extensive experience in banking, government and real estate, Masood Al Awar has developed leadership skills and industry expertise that have turned him into a visionary who implements positive change and drives excellence within any organisation he is a part of. Al Awar gained valuable real estate experience from two publicly-listed real estate companies, Sorouh Real Estate PJSC in Abu Dhabi and Emaar Properties in Dubai. He worked as a Special Advisor to the Chairman, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer and Head of Corporate Customer Relationship Management for these two prominent firms. Armed with an MBA degree from the University of Glamorgan in Wales, the UK, Al Awar proceeded to enhance his business and banking fundamentals through eight years of stay with Barclays Bank. This was followed by a six-year stint as Head of Personnel of the Finance Department of Dubai Police.

Kamran Saddique is a US Partner in Inside Investor, a venture firm that is building ideas into products in Asia, the Middle East and the US. He is driven by building platforms, and thinking of new ideas that can disrupt old models. Saddique is a CEO of incept.co which is bringing startups, mentors and corporates on one platform and creating competitions to connect them all together and is driving Smart Living City to become a global player in creating SMART ecosystems. His background covers Finance, Consulting, Media and technology over the past 15 years across 3 continents. Jenaro García | CEO at Gowex, worldwide leader in creating wireless Smart Cities
Mr. Jenaro García Martín founded Let’s Gowex SA (formerly Group GOWEX) in 1999 and serves as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and President. Mr. Martín also represents Let’s Gowex SA on the management board of eMOV, the Spanish platform. He started his career as an entrepreneur by creating an import & export company. In 1996, he targeted the telecommunications market by creating an ISP working with major Spanish financial, pharmaceutical and insurance companies.

Hani Rashid Al Hamli is the Secretary General of DEC. His tenure has seen the establishment of the Dubai Competitiveness Center (DCC), the Economic Policy & Research Center (EPRC) and the Legal Affairs & Research Center (LARC). He has pursued strategic partnerships to enhance the scientific efforts underpinning economic policy. Previously, Al Hamli had held diverse public and private sector positions in Dubai, including the Executive CouncilGovernment of Dubai, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Emirates Bank Group, and the Investment & Development Authority. He is a graduate of Business Administration from the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology.
Dr. Ryan C.C. Chin | MD of the City Science Initiative at the MIT Media Lab
Dr. Ryan C.C. Chin is the managing director of the City Science Initiative at the MIT Media Lab. His research focuses on developing new urban systems for a post-oil, connected world in the areas of sustainable mobility, resilient energy systems, urban food production, transformable live/work space, and Big Data urban analytics. Chin’s research led to the development of the CityCar – a foldable, shareable, two-passenger LEV designed specifically for MoD Systems. Time Magazine named the MIT CityCar “Automotive Invention of the Year” in 2007. Esquire Magazine named Dr. Chin as one of the Best and Brightest for innovators under the age of 35 in 2006.

The City Science Initiative at the MIT Media Lab has developed new technologies, strategies, and designs to address this need.
