All officials have to have a Jaguar, by the white population in factory towns which ambassadors, and diplomatic people or when the had made Ronald Reagan rise through the political Prime Minister visits, that’s the car. Ronald and US relationship. The first major thing is to Reagan came as an outsider. He positioned himanalyse why Trump got elected? It is very similar self as an outsider. Washington is very much the to the rise of Ronald Reagan, and I will give you same, people controlling it. I would like to bring the parallels. Ronald Reagan rose because there about a change and strike a chord, as did it Trump. was a huge impact on the white working class Same agenda. If you look at Trump’s agenda today, there is a parallel. First what Ronald Reagan did was save corporate tax paid by American corporations at 55%. He said it’s too high, it’s unfair competition worldwide. It Dr. Daisy Mathur Jain reading Prof. Sheth’s citation (Seated L to R) Dr. Smitha Girija, Prof. should be down Sheth, Amb. A. Singh)

to 35% and he got it done. Similarly Trump said corporate tax is too high at 35%. It should be down to 20%. He got it done at 21%. Ronald Reagan’s speeches at that time and writings were very inflammatory untie Mexican. Actually he did not like the organised union activist. He really thought that it was unfair to the American economy and he took that as a personal challenge and became untied union. Ronald Reagan was a Democrat, a union leader himself. He was elected from the most liberal democratic state called California. Trump, he is from the second most liberal state, he is from New York. It is fascinating to see the parallel. Trump has done the same thing – untie Mexican rhetoric, including building the wall and all that stuff. Ronald Reagan immediately said we have an unfair group of competition from Japan and threatened the Japanese government and enterprises that you invest in America, make it in America. So all the automobile people came to America, Toyota came, Honda came, Nissan came and they all put new plant capacity in America. In fact lot of Japanese corporations bought out everything that we have, like television manufacturers, watch makers and they also invested in real estate. This time it is not Japan, but China. The rhetoric will not be as inflammatory as before because Chinese is so strong as an economy and many of the administrators, Trump Cabinet Administrators are all pro-China, keep that in back of the mind. So there is a counter-balancing force. You can do it more guarded, but you will see them every once in a while telling the Chinese that you are not doing fair pricing, there is a dumping etc. for the steel, for the aluminium, or whatever it is and we should not impose tariffs and all that stuff is typical. Very interesting process. Ronald Reagan was definitely fed up as a governor of California, too much federal government regulation, too much bureaucracy. The EPA, Environmental Protection Agency has become very strong, not allowing to do anything. So Reagan wanted to actually reduce the bureaucracy in Washington. Same agenda now years later. Ronald Reagan coined that as new federalism, the role of Central Government is only Defence and nothing else. Everything else should be done by the States- whether it is Healthcare, Education or anything else, you will hear the same thing – de-regulate, de-regulate or relax the regulatory agencies as watch guards to say - allow whatever is possible. Pro-business in that regard specifically, which is again very interesting. Reagan did all of this, which is what they will follow, it looks like. Reagan in fact made sure that he brought in
outsiders – so he brought people from California and the Mid-West. This Government has brought people from the South primarily. Non-Washington experience hoping that it will make a difference. It goes on and on, and if you look at the parallels it becomes interesting more and more. Reagan’s first few years were controversial. He could not get many things done. But there is a difference. Reagan was an actor. And what do actors do? Actors don’t write their own script. There are professional scriptwriters and the role of the actor is to read those scripts with emotions. So Reagan was master at that as a movie actor, perfect at the skills. Unfortunately Donald Trump is a writer. And it seems like that his English is not very good. And this is the key difference between the two. During Reagan’s time, there was only one external enemy which was Soviet Union. Reagan immediately raised the Defence budget. He took strategic defence initiatives. Trump has raised the defence budget, but now he has to fight three fronts which we think there is no way US can manage, the Russia front with NATO, the Middle-East which is absolutely a quagmire, and then the Asia front – the China, slowing down the Chinese on this side, which means Unites States will need partners. And partners will come from place which one can’t imagine. There is a huge shift economically which is taking place. I just wanted to give you the parallels and then tell you economically where the world is going and then about Trump policy and how it will impact. In 1987, 755 of all the world GDP was concentrated in 15 nations – North America, that is US and Canada, 12 common market countries in Europe which included England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy etc. and Japan. Japan was a late entrant by the way and became number 2 or number 2 economy in the process. 75% of the wealth was there, and that is where the manufacturing also took place. Trade was about 45% because economies were still exporting raw materials – agricultural and industrial raw materials. They need land, labour, capital and all that stuff. And that is what brought about change in the while international trade. Economies were not growing after the first energy crisis. Domestic growth was not there. So they abolished all the agreements based on tariffs on trade. And they a created a new organisation which was World Trade Organisation i.e. WTO. Trade gave the pump. All of a sudden the new trio power is now longer those three nations, but due to the new economic growth the trio power is with US still as number 1 in purchasing power parity. China just surpasses that, and it will become the
Amb. Arun Singh at IILM’s 11th Distinguished Global Thinker Award Ceremony
number 1 in economic GDP probably as early as 2020. You know that US economy is growing but Chinese are coming at a much faster rate and on a much faster base now like never before. And the third nation in the new trio power is India. Purchasing power parity was very clear. Ours is not a 6.5 trillion purchasing power base. It turns to be almost 10 trillion but because we have a cash economy, it is not properly recorded. So now, everything will shift towards Asia. You have Japan is the third largest economy. South Korea is a big one but as you see the rise of China and India. So the whole world will now shift to Asia. Asia is the new pivot economically and also militarily by definition. Therefore everybody is racing towards this new trio in which you have US, China and India. These three nations are like the previous triad power who were rationalised in their thinking and policy by World Wars defeating Japan and Germany. These three nations have different legacies. China has a communist legacy and therefore, they think differently. We have pretty much like untied capitalistic view as a population. We started as a socialistic society of India, planned economy. We are transitioning from that to become capitalistic. And US is raw capitalism. Everything is like trust Capitalism till it fails and then comes in the Government. So they are all not on the same page. There is lot of exchange and dialogue among the three. The question really there is that is the two in the triad power get together, there is a balance of power shift. India becomes very strategic both for China and for United States. It’s a forward conclusion that the US and China will probably not remains partners economically, definitely not militarily and also may be not politically. US now badly
needs the presence of a major presence of a near one more than Japan and that’s where India become very strategic to the American interest, both militarily and definitely economically. And so you see the new alignment taking place. Let me go back now to Trump and his announcements and what are its consequences on trade and economic policies. The first thing he announced was that there is no more trans-
pacific partnership with the 11 nations after working for many years. The Agreement was signed in Atlanta. I attended the last get together of some key people involved and all of a sudden here is a new President who says that it is absolutely not acceptable. So TPP is dead on his arrival. Without US it makes no sense. While other nations are trying, and there may be some other elements, but in the short run it is not going to happen. Bilateral trade will replace multilateral trade in the US. The five nations who are really having a huge economic surplus, balance of payments surplus are – number one surprisingly is China, number two is Mexico, number three is Germany - watch Germany, number four is Canada or South Korea, South Korea is the fifth one. They have targeted these nations who export lot more to America than import from America as now they have to do a couple of more things. Either import more or invest more in America. So multilateral trade will now shift back to bilateral trade worldwide. While US starts the process, it is going to happen with the Brexit in England. They are going to engage in bilateral trade probably or may be with Commonwealth countries and US will become a significant economic partner to England as they divest from the European Union for example. It’s a matter of time before it is going to happen. So there will be more bilateral agreements. The trade is not what we teach. I think that 35% and if you add the captive suppliers, then about 50% of the world trade today is not between different companies, but within the same companies, and this is what we call as intra company or infra firm trade. That is going to have a massive impact- same multinational exporting a part here and importing
7
back again is counted as buy-and-sell trade, import-export etc. It’s a fast international trade theory. That was true for General Motors when it makes engines in Canada, exports them into America for assembling or to Mexico. It is counted as export from Canada, import into America or Mexico and when the product is assembled where the labour is, it is counted again. So it’s a very false economy. The traditional theory is broken now. And what is taking place now is multilateral trade agreements or free trade agreements which is very fascinating. So we think that the biggest impact will be within the Company. I do want to mention about something else that happened in the Reagan administration that is not in the public domain and that includes the debt budget of the Government. American Government had borrowed lot of treasury and the largest owner was Japan. Interest rates were skyrocketing under Carter administration, Prime Rate was like 9% or 10%. The monetary policy has an impact on the fiscal budget, you have interest on the debt. Size of the debt is much larger now. Today the debt is 3 trillion dollars. Largest holder is China, second largest owner is probably South East or India or Japanese. Very interestingly we will convert our public debt into private just like we did it with Japan. Federal Reserve Central Bank talks to Bank of Japan which is their Central Bank, who somehow behind the scenes organises, gives
money to the Japanese banks Sumitomo Mitsui Bank. Remember they have the largest balance sheet as their asset, with the mandate that you can borrow this money and you don’t have to pay back - zero cost of capital. But money should be invested in America. If I get a free capital, I will invest. And that’s what the Japanese did. So there will be massive acquisition by Chinese corporations into the US. Germans already understood this and all the five major automakers are now assembling in America from BMW, to Porsche, to Volkswagen and all of them. It basically reduces the export, making it less commercial or private. Conversion of public government, public debt into private equity is a very key word. Private equity guys made enormous money at that time. And private equity guys would come back in a very big way and the names will change from the Goldman Sachs to Blackstone, and it will be the same process again and this time it is quite interesting. So we can just talk about going back to three WTO trio. Export-oriented economy will shift to foreign investment all over the world. What America has started will now trigger all over the world. It’s not going to be unique there. It will happen in China, it will happen in Germany, it will happen in Japan. That means they all will have to liberalize foreign direct investment policy. I think will happen around here is that the direct investment will replace trade worldwide, is our
Prof. Sheth receving IILM’s Distinguished Global Thinker Award from Mrs. Malvika Rai and Amb. Arun Singh
8
forecast. Japan is massively investing worldwide in the process. Korea will follow very quickly and the China’s global expansion in other emerging markets targeting emerging markets in the ASEAN theatre, Africa for example but then it will come to the US in a big way is also our forecast. India will now benefit for a totally different reason. The world now thinks that China is so dominant in manufacturing and exports that they do not want de-risk because they don’t understand where China will go in this tension between US and China. Therefore, in turn you need a second sourcing destination .You cannot have supply chain turning at the mercy of the politics. You have to de-risk and the nation that benefits in de-risking, it comes out is India. The problem with India is that we don’t have scale. We have size. We have no scale. If I want to buy twenty billion dollars of jeans, nobody in India can supply that. The problem is that we have allowed too many companies to be independent. So I’m going to suggest that the Government should actually encourage consolidation. We have too many banks, too many oil companies, we have too many of anything. But how can you consolidate it all into one so we have not only size but also scale. We have the largest producer and consumer milk and milk based products in the world but we don’t have any largest dairy of the level that one will have on a global scale. So that’s clearly one of the key things that we are watching and the real assets of this country are the public sector enterprises. They have a scale. If I can put for oil companies together now, I come out right in the top five or six. If could combine banks together, I think we can be among the largest banks in the world. Our domestic standards not shift to the global standards. Chinese expansion into OBOR as you might have heard - One Belt One Road Initiative is a massive infrastructure investment propelled by a trillion dollar. Now that architecture that is put in place is not captive. Anybody can use those roads. In Germany you can hire Germans, in Japan there are Japanese, in France they hire French, only in Englishspeaking countries they think of sending Indians out there. What is important to note is that in the IT services, Indian company is going to be maybe one of the largest employers in America, think about it. Just as in this country, you go to Hyderabad. Ernst and Young which is an American company has like fifty thousand people working. So we’ll be Accenture, not for American work but worldwide. I think this bilateral arrangement would be very valuable and you not afford a consortium like Israel on the one hand, Japan on the other hand and all trying to create a consortium of something to counterbalance the rise of China, India is having enormous benefit in the process. So my view is that I think India is in the right place.
Prof. Jagdish Sheth, delivering the special lecture on ‘How the Trump Presidency will transform US trade policy: Implications for India’
Goddess Lakshmi is blessing it, when Goddess Lakshmi comes, you don’t say I have some dirt on my face, let me go to the washroom and clean it up before you bless me, you take the blessings when it happens. We missed the boat twice right after independence in the fifties, Allies wanted to outsource manufacturing, India was the perfect place but because we’re in the non-alignment policy we decided we can’t trust the colonial powers and we refused. Otherwise we would be the manufacturing capital they would have given us the technology they were given of the scale, everything for their interest as they have done. If you look at the Chinese exports more than 50 percent is all foreign brands making things in China, it’s not Chinese brands, which are now starting to rise. We missed another boat when Mrs. Gandhi was in power because at that time we had to align in to protect ourselves militarily, we also had foreign exchange problem. As long as it took place, we are aligning with Soviet Union, which set back the nation 25 years. It’s the third time when Goddess Lakshmi will bless you and I hope this time we are ready to blessed. Thank you very much I just want to add one additional thing which is personal, I’m a refugee from Burma, my father
9
went there in 1918 or something around the world war one. British Empire wanted to create two capitals, one for West Asia which is from Calcutta, west, they put investment in the Rangoon or Yangon, to create another capital for East Asia. They need a lot of bureaucrats because we know the british system of legal, accounting and everything. My father worked as a merchant for rice trading, Burma was one of the largest producer of rice in the world at one time, Azim prem ji’s grandfather went there to buy rice, lots of people from here freely went to Burma. Unfortunately Japan attacked Burma they were rolling out and we became refugees, I come from the merchant community. Coming back to India, coming back to Kutch, where I come from I would have a small shop, typical pan wala shop, area probably square foot. I’m making five six thousand rupees, I would not be high school graduate but I would be happy I don’t know my own potential. It is my sister who saw potential in me and encouraged me to get education, teachers encouraged me, this nation gave me free education, So it’s very important to understand that we all are privileged class all of you, and you must have a sense of giving back the day when you graduate, which is why I do these presentations. If you take a grain of wheat and make it into a loaf of bread, the value at is only three times agricultural commodities to finished product, is about three terms, if you take a rough diamond and polish it, the diamond cutter will get the brilliance out of the diamond, and the value addition for rough diamond is about to fifteen to twenty times. You might have some exceptions but the average is about that, but if you take a human being, the mentor, trainer, he invest and nurture, the value add of that is infinite. So, we are blessed with agriculture, we are blessed with animals, we have industrial raw materials, the
real potential of this nation is its human capital. I believe it very strongly that if I can do it anybody can do it and that’s what we need to leverage as a nation. I’ll just add one more thing and it’s absolutely incredible to see that how it’s such a small thing that one can do to amplify the human capital. It’s not a big thing to do, and this nation has to learn that how to invest in the human capital, which I think it’s trying to do, I think in right leadership does that, but to me, that is your assets. I must tell you that Indian diaspora is very strong worldwide and well placed. How do we leverage the Indian diaspora, they don’t wanna contribute back. we need to come out with a policy or a formula on how to do it properly so to me ultimately this nation is on the rise, despite all the things you hear inside the country, all the issues you are having, it is transforming in our eyes and all nations are made not by themselves but Outsiders. America was not made by natives it’s all immigrants, it was the same thing here Outsiders will make an India, more so than insiders will do, it’s a matter of time. Analyse the whole thing it’s very fascinating and I’m very positive about the nation. I think this nation is now clearly declared for the major power segmenting economically at least and maybe politically, militarily also very strong. Dr. Smitha Girija, Director, IILM, thanked Prof. Sheth and distinguished guests. The award ceremony closed with the singing of National Anthem.

Chief Guest, Mr. Bharat Kaushal, Managing Director of Hitachi India, delivering his address
I was in a flight about one and a half hours ago before I came here and I was thinking what to say to this smart lot of graduating people who are already very intelligent. And I said to myself that maybe I should not leave them with theory, but share something about what I have learnt in my own life’s journey. Some of the observations I have may be relevant for today and some of those may be used as you get on in life. The first thing that I want to share with you today is that you must always set a goalpost for yourself. This is a water ship moment. You have culminated whole lot of learning that has gone on until today and you embark on upon a sort of really big opportunity from your own businesses to envisioning new ideas, starting up your own ventures, to companies and institutions where you will find jobs and work and learn in every sphere. But leadership is an important goalpost and the only way to set that goalpost is to start taking ownership from the first day. You have to put your heart in where your mind is. Not every job is going to be intellectually fertile or stimulating. But it is important to take ownership of what you believe in. You will learn
that not every position is about CEO’s job. Leadership is the most important aspect of every job and so you have to pay attention to your work as though it is your own company. And finally somewhere recognition for your sincerity will fall in place. The other thing that I want to say is about learning continuously. You have to build on yourself constantly. I am standing in front of you. I am going through a reinvention myself. Even at 49 years of age, I put efforts to constantly learn and reinvent myself more and more. In the end, I will talk about social evolution. If we look at this whole evolution that we have been undergoing, it has always been a balance of continuity and change. But just this time, the word progressive disruption has made the whole thing change so much that we have altogether different perspectives about this is how education, skilling, work and everything else around us should be. You should always be ready to deal with the rapidly evolving environment. And like I have said, some of the things I have shared with you may be relevant today and some of them are those on which you can reflect upon and use them later in life. But the most important thing to remember in life is that things have their own way of finding a course to reach you. And everything doesn’t have to be planned. Of course, you have to be diligent and keep organising yourself for tomorrow. The opportunities are opening and it is nothing like before. I come from a humble background and I went to St. Stephen’s College thinking that I will join the Civil Services. But then things changed entirely and this is where I have landed up today. But definitely about my interest in India, and this is also what I say to my Japanese colleagues all the time, is that I am good person to be your team is because I am a very proud Indian. I have come here to be a part of your celebration and also to share with you that you need to believe in yourself and go ahead in life. God bless you! Awards and Recognition Dr. Smitha Girija welcomed Mr. Anil V Vallecha, Senior Service Delivery – Financial Operations, American Express. Mr. Vallecha is IILM alumna from the Class of 1998. Mrs. Malvika Rai, Chairperson, IILM, presented an award to him. The Chief Guest, Mr. Bharat Kaushal and Mrs. Malvika Rai presented Gold and Silver Medals to the

IILM Graduate School of Management accredited by NAAC Accreditation is defined as “a status granted to an institution or a program within an institution that has been evaluated and found to meet or exceed stated criteria of education quality” (Young et al, 1983). The quest for quality is a never ending process, as it keeps changing and developing day by day. An institution with AICTE approval was initially seen as a quality indicator then it was the stage of national accreditation by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). “Accreditation is broadly used for understanding the “Quality Status” of an institution. In the context of Higher Education, the accreditation status indicates that the particular Higher Educational Institution (HEI) – a College,

an University, or any other recognised Unit, meets the standards of quality as set by the Accreditation Agency, in terms of its performance, related to the educational processes and outcomes, covering the curriculum, teaching learning, evaluation, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organisation, governance, financial well being and student services.” as quoted by NAAC.
In order to assure quality and achieve excellence in management education, it is imperative for our business schools to go for any accreditation. IILM Graduate School of Management applied for NAAC Accreditation during 2017. NAAC is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country. Subsequent to the submission of Self Study report the Peer Team visited the campus during 12th & 13th October 2017.The Institute was graded on seven criterions . The criterions were Curricular Aspects, Teaching- Learning and Evaluation, Research Consultancy and Extension, Infrastructure and Learning Resources, Student Support and Progression, Governance, Leadership and Management and Innovations & Best Practices.

Such is the expectation of the current millennials. The current millennials want instantaneous sharing of information which is vital in this age of digital disruption. He mentioned that everyone is on a platform, and when the ad goes viral, the expectation from the digital media soars high. All salespeople are also moving to the digital platform to enhance customer satisfaction and no customization can be done without digitization. All business needs to be looked at the “moment of truth” by leveraging it with the example of how Google has renamed its business strategy from moment of truth to zero moment of truth. The essence of the marketing conference was well received by the students and they interacted with the speakers asking them relevant questions upon the topics of the panel.

Emotional Intelligence: The Critical Leadership Skill Dr. Shuchi Agarwal, Professor OB, HR, Leadership & Negotiation
Jeff Bezos of Amazon is known to be obsessed with getting into the hearts and minds of Amazon customers and his long-term perspective on relationships (and Business strategy) are legendary. Howard Schultz of Starbucks is well known to love the company and its people. Steve Jobs’ biographer attributed some of Jobs’ success in developing creative and popular products to his ability to identify, analyse and control emotions. “Jobs could size people up, understand their inner thoughts, cajole them, intimidate them, target their deepest vulnerabilities and delight them at will. He knew intuitively how to create products that pleased, interfaces that were friendly and marketing messages that were enticing” (Issacson, 2011) .This suggests that successful leaders differ from their competitors not in traditional intelligence but just that they understood better how people feel and leveraged this understanding in developing products and culture that appealed more to customers and employees.
The most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way, they all have high degree of Emotional Intelligence. It is not that IQ or technical skills are irrelevant. They do matter as the entry level requirement but decades of research have shown that EI is what makes a successful and a great leader. A study looked at the successes and failures of 11 U.S. presidents and evaluated them on six qualities: communication, organization, political skill, vision, cognitive style, and emotional
intelligence. The key quality that differentiated the successful from the unsuccessful was emotional intelligence. International search firm Egon Zehnder International analyzed senior executives and discovered that those who were strongest in emotional intelligence were more likely to succeed than those strongest in either IQ or relevant previous experience. Recent HBR article reported on the strong link between empathetic leaders and financial performance. EI affects how people
35
behave, navigate social complexities and make personal decisions to achieve positive results. Presence of EQ is known to help relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. What is Emotional Intelligence? Mayer and Salovey firstly coined the term Emotional Intelligence in 1990 and a decade later Daniel Goleman established its importance in business leadership. The Harvard Business Review defines EI as an individual’s ability to accurately recognize, understand and manage their own emotions as well as that of others. EI is made up of four core skills Self-awareness., self-management, social awareness and relationship management. Self-awareness is the ability to be aware of one’s emotions and manage behavior and tendencies accordingly. Self-Management is the ability to use self-awareness to stay flexible and positively direct one’s behavior. Instead of reacting to every feeling, one waits for the emotion to pass so that one can respond reasonably instead of taking impulsive decisions. Social Awareness is the ability to accurately pick up and understand emotions in others. As a result, one takes people’s emotions into consideration while choosing the right words and actions. Relationship Management is the ability to use self and social awareness to manage interactions successfully.
36
Why Emotional Intelligence is Indispensable for Leaders? Emotional Intelligence is a key determinant of effective leadership. High level of EI enables a leader to perceive accurately, understand, and appraise others’ emotions and better respond flexibly to changes in their social environments and build
supportive networks (Salovey et al 1999). Leaders high on Emotional Intelligence are successful because • They are able to comprehend the effect of their feelings and emotions and make sound, objective decisions accordingly. • They are able to listen to what people are saying without being judgmental. • They are able to make personal connect with
their people. • They are excellent communicators because they know what messages will connect with others and how to express them. • They are able to anticipate and respond to others’ sentiments and reactions and develop a strategy to keep them grounded. A leader lacking in emotional intelligence is not able to effectively gauge the needs, wants and expectations of those they lead. Such leaders react from their emotions without filtering them creating mistrust amongst their staff and seriously jeopardize their working relationship. On the other hand an emotionally savvy and intelligent leader is also able to build stronger teams by strategically utilizing the emotional diversity of their team members leading to high performance and workplace satisfaction. Conclusion - Emotional intelligence is the foundation for a host of critical skills, is the single biggest predictor of performance in the workplace and the strongest driver of leadership and personal excellence. World economic forum has also listed it as one of the top skills required in 2020. In future with the advent of Artificial intelligence a lot of jobs are going to disappear, but the thing that we will always have that is more important is emotional intelligence

Sustainability – The Triple Bottom Line in Business Pragya Arya Assistant Professor (Operations Management) IILM Institute of Higher Education The word sustainability has been around for quite some time, but it is only recently that it has managed to create a buzz. We hear news of many business organizations, national governments, NGOs, etc. working for causes like education for the girl child, healthcare for people below the poverty line, developing and producing products which are environment friendly, products based purely on natural ingredients, etc. But on the flipside, we also know the continually degrading state of our environment (refer the reports that come in citing the air quality of our cities and certifying them as the most non-liveable places on earth) and its effect on our health. This forces us to think that somewhere, as a system, we are falling short in fulfilling our responsibility towards living sustainably. But what is sustainability after all? Sustainability is a state of mind, it is the way we think. If that is so it must reflect in our style of living and working at individual as well as collective levels. Looking at sustainability from a collective perspective is more appropriate in the present context because the level of improvement required in the social, economic as well as environmental sustainability will be visible only if our efforts combined and collective.
Many developed nations have made it mandatory for their business organizations to follow Triple Bottom Line reporting annually. Many organizations comply to TBL reporting, whether it is mandated by their respective country governments or not. This is primarily a result of the commitment of the top management of such organizations to become sustainable in true sense – addressing all the three pillars of sustainability simultaneously. But such for-profit organizations are very few worldwide. Most organizations do not follow sustainability in true spirit. They either do nothing on that front or just follow a few compulsory regulations. It is important for the commercial organizations to understand that their role in making planet earth more sustainable in true sense is imperative and so they cannot shy away from their responsibility to work sustainably. Businesses can look at the three pillars of sustainability from three different perspectives as shown in the figure below.
The most widely accepted technical definition of sustainability is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Put simply it means that we must also think about our future generations while extracting resources available to us naturally. Sustainability has been conceptualized in many ways, but the most common way of looking at sustainability is to consider it as having three building blocks or pillars. These are economic sustainability, social sustainability and environmental sustainability. These three aspects of sustainability are commonly termed as the Triple Bottom Line (TBL). Perspective 1
37 A
Perspective 2
Perspective 3
The first perspective allows us to look at the three pillars separately as well as in conjunction with each other. The second and third perspective present a hierarchical relationship among the three pillars, with economic sustainability contained within social and social in turn is contained within ecological or environmental pillar. However, in the third perspective, the defining line between economic and social gradually diminishes. The organizations may choose any one model out of the three to start their sustainability initiatives; however, they must understand that they will be sustainable in true sense only when they address all the three aspects of sustainability, simultaneously, as represented by the common area in all the figures.
A A 38
At present, the focus of most commercial organizations is skewed towards ensuring their own economic sustainability. Their concern and actions to address social issues is a part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and governed primarily by the fact that they get grants or subsidies from the government or some other regulatory body for such initiatives. The aspect that gets least attentions of business organizations is the environmental or ecological sustainability. This is primarily because the businesses are short-sighted and they evaluate all their actions from economic angle. Any measure that shows them immediate economic benefit is quickly adopted. However, measures which may be associated with a long term economic benefit, but do not promise any short term economic benefit are not usually adopted. The businesses cannot be blamed for this attitude. We have read in our
management classes that the prime objective of any business is to earn money, increase profit and pass on that benefit to its shareholders. Hence it is natural for them to evaluate every sustainability initiative from economic angle. Just like Maslow’s hierarchy theory of needs, in business too, addressing economic sustainability is of prime importance. Then an organization may move to social as it involves upliftment of human resources, which the business draws from society. At this stage the distinction between economic and social pillars gradually diminishes as represented by the dotted lines in perspective 3. Finally, the organization must shift its focus to environmental sustainability as, the society draws all its resources from Mother Earth. But times have changed. The stakeholders including the customers are becoming increasingly aware about social and environmental issues encompassing us. They prefer to deal with or invest in organizations which are socially and ecologically conscious. Therefore, the need of the hour is that the for-profit organizations must strive to become socially as well as ecologically sustainable and move from a prejudiced view to a more tolerant and broad view towards sustainability. To be known as truly sustainable, an organization must make a lot of investment – in terms of time and money. The commitment from top management is one of the most imperative requirements as it aids in building an environmentally and socially conscious culture in the work place. This is a well-established fact that any kind of cultural change in the organization needs to have the support of the top management and this should result in formulation of suitable sustainability-oriented strategies. The management must ensure that these strategies result into actions so that the benefits of such actions become tangible and measurable. This will help the organizations not only to measure their TBL performance but also work for further improvement as the TBL performance gaps become more visible.

My Experience At IILM and India Gabriel Deschodt International Exchange Student
IILM provided me an opportunity to study in India, which has broadened my experiences and helped me to discover my passion. Since several years I wanted to travel to New Delhi to gain an own impression of “incredible India”. Early morning with bright sunshine in a taxi, I was on the way to one of the best Business Schools in Delhi NCR region. PGDM Programme offered by IILM provided fair and equal access to everyone. I was given lot of flexibility to select the modules of my choice and gain abundant exposure to different management functions both practically and theoretically. Exchange Students here are provided with Buddy and Faculty Mentors who help us in solving our queries or issues we face on the day to day basis. These mentors play a key role in making us comfortable in the college and telling us about the interesting stories related to India’s rich heritage. There are a lot of seminars and conferences like finance conference, entrepreneurship conference, marketing conference, special talks by eminent professors and industry experts which has enriched my knowledge. The Guidance provided by the faculty members is really valuable. The faculty members make sure that all the sessions are interactive and interesting in nature. They use a lot of case studies, simulations, discussions, role-plays and many innovative ways of evaluation. The lectures are well structured focusing on the theoretical learning content highlighted with the examples of the Indian economy and companies. Beyond the lectures, the great hospitality of the people at IILM made my stay very special to me. Since the first day, I was feeling integrated in the whole college. With the time it became more and more a familial atmosphere. IILM is a place which you visit to gain a wide range of knowledge, new friendships and a lot of fun. Beside visiting college, you also may have leisure time. So what can you do in Delhi in your free time? Firstly, the students of the college made me familiar with typical Indian food. We went to several restaurants and had a wide range of dishes. Not only the Indian kitchen is wonderful, also the way how Indians celebrate religious festivals is awesome. I along with my IILM’s friends visited Chittaranjan Park (CR park) and witnessed how Bengali’s celebrate Durga Pooja festival. “Delhi’s mini-Bengal”, delightfully transform into a whirlwind of colors, textures, aromas and culinary pleasures and the entire area comes alive with the sounds of children’s laughter, elderly gossips, trance-inducing religious hymns and gyrating beats of drums that refuse to die down even in the late hours of night. Durga Puja is that time of the year when the Bengali population gears up to adore and offer obeisance to Goddess Durga, the sophisticated Hindu feminine deity. Though the whole place wears a festive look complete with lights, music and crowds that tend to spill out on the arterial roads and side lanes, the mainstay of the wonderful celebrations remain the numerous, brilliantly-lit grand “pandals” (makeshift temples composed of cloth and paper over a bamboo framework) which are erected in the larger community parks and temple arenas and house idols of the Goddess and her hallowed. Beyond these festivals and the tasty food there are many beautiful places to visit in and around Delhi like the Taj Mahal, The Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Delli Haat, etc. IILM has exceeded my expectations in every aspect. The extraordinary quality of teaching as well as the thoughtful policies for non- Hindi speaking students has confirmed my choice to study at IILM. My experiences with India and IILM have been very diverse. I have met nice people from different cultures which were interesting. India is a great country to travel around and I gained new impressions of how multifarious our world can be! I learned a lot about the Indian behavior, culture and education. I’ve have learned how to think out of box. I am really grateful to the International office team at IILM and the mentors who made this semester exchange program a lifelong experience for me. I love IILM and I am so grateful that I was able to pursue my education here!

10 Lessons From My Time At IILM
A A
It has been a long journey – from being accepted into one of the top business schools in India to taking flight into the world of corporate administration. My time at IILM, however, has been worth every moment. Today as I sit down to compile the top 10 takeaways, the most important lessons I have garnered from my time at IILM, I realize that these are not merely components of entrepreneurship courses but are life lessons that I shall carry with me. Follow your passion: Leadership is the ability to share your vision, your enthusiasm for your team, guiding it to success. It is only when you are passionate about your own goals can you hope to inspire others; and only with this dedication to your dreams can you leave a lasting impact. People are precious: One of the greatest lessons I have learnt at IILM is that it is people that we work for and work with. Placing the people ahead of our goals and challenges will make work a very fulfilling experience and the success worthwhile. You can make a difference: One single person, a lone voice, one revolutionary idea, a moment of brilliance – that’s all it takes to change the way things have always been. Being different is a result of courage, though. Cultivate that courage. Step out of your comfort zone: Staying with our feet firmly planted on the ground may sound practical but that is not the way to achieve any breakthroughs. Only aiming high, taking risks, pushing ourselves to go beyond your comfort zone, and trying creative solutions to challenges shall help us achieve the success we seek. Great execution is as important as a great idea: Working on creative solutions, customizing products and processes, breakthrough ideas – none of them are worth much unless we dedicate ourselves to flawless execution. Focus and pay attention to details. Seek diversity: Birds of a feather may flock together but it is only diversity that will provide a team, an organization with the skill sets that are required to get a rounded
perspective of any situation and to work on an effective solution to any challenge. Work on your empathy: At business school, there is a great deal of emphasis on developing soft skills. At IILM, however, we learned to take people-centric management further by working on our empathy factor. This alone will give us a winwin outlook. Never stop learning: This in itself is the greatest learning. Make “Stay Foolish, Stay Hungry” your mantra but also stay open to learning that comes from unexpected quarters. Knowledge is not a function of qualification or even experience. Appreciate the critic and the skeptic for their ability to show you your weaknesses. Take nothing for granted: Getting caught up in the dynamics of the corporate world, in our work, in designing and sustaining creative enterprises, we often overlook the need to be prepared for exigencies. Effective handling of crisis situations is just as important as administering business solutions. Think big: Through my time at IILM, my mentors and peers helped me look at the larger picture. Clichéd as it may sound, our business enterprises must fit into the global scheme of development. Thinking big alone will help us achieve phenomenal success. -Rudrajoy Banerjee

My Global Study Tour at ISM, Germany IILM Undergraduate Business School offers a view and experience of a big World beyond the Horizon. To be in sync, with the Global vision of providing Economy with Responsible Entrepreneurs in today’s time. IILM gives the first-hand experience about multi-lingual cultures, organizations, and business practices around the world. All this encapsulated in a mandatory 3 weeks Global Study Program at Germany or Canada or Finland, to choose from. Global Study Programs are also designed to strengthen student’s knowledge, skills and attitudes to create economic and social wealth everywhere. Giving a sense of living in harmony with the environment and becoming self-reliant in the known and unknown circumstances. One of the options under Global Study Program offered to the students is in association with International School of Management (ISM), Dortmund, Germany. On the 6th of August 2017, 35 students along with two faculty members, from both Lodhi Road and Gurgaon Campus boarded Lufthansa flight for Frankfurt, Germany to reach ISM. Modules taught consisted of “Advance Strategic Management” and “Entrepreneurship and Innovation”. Each set of Module is designed keeping in mind the fundamental importance of business learning. IILM students are required go through a well-planned and structured format of the conduction of the modules as per ISM curriculum. The teaching methodology applied during the program takes place in the shape of Interactive Classroom Teaching, Numerous Presentations, Harvard Case Study Sessions and much more. The icing on the cake was when Professor Kamran was happy with the students that he provided an additional teaching class on the subject “Design Thinking” which is certainly the next big thing in the industry. This three weeks program was a blend of high standard teaching, Industrial visits to DASA and WILO, and Cultural interaction. Prof. Qeis

Kamran is a person with vivid knowledge and vast experience, teaching students about What could be there rather than What is there. Our student Coordinator, Jana Dargel from ISM was kind enough to make our stay comfortable. German Culture is about People being hard working, sincere, honest and punctual. They are very helpful, warm and welcoming to the visitors to their Country. During the week ends and spare time, we traveled across Europe. People we came across were very helpful, even when they didn’t know the way they used their Google Map to guide us. Some of the places the students planned and visited on their own, included Berlin, Paris, Praha, Zurich, Amsterdam, Brussels and Spain. It was overall Personal as well as Social skills development 3 weeks program. To Conclude I would say; “Thank you IILM for giving me this golden opportunity to learn and experience the world beyond IILM campus and across the Continents. Global Studies by far has been one of my most delightful experiences. From cross-cultural diversity to different business trends and challenges, I learned an essential side of business studies. Faculty and Friends – they all made my Global Study Tour worth cherishing for life.” -Surbhi Dhasmana
