BHALSWA LAKE COMPLEX Bhalswa Lake is in north-central Delhi at GT Karnal Road with an area of 92 hectares is slated to be a complete commercial and recreational centre for the entire family, surrounded by Bhalswa dairy colony. The complex having 18 hole golf course and water sports in the lake. Bhalswa Horseshoe Lake a multi-sports and leisure complex has been created by Delhi Tourism at Bhalswa Lake, (it is a rain fed lake) situated at Delhi. Length of Bhalswa lake is 350 m (dda.org.in). Lake is covered by residential area of Bhalswa dairy colony and dairy effluent is also coming to Bhalswa lake. This horseshoe lake was originally formed when the nearby River Yamuna left behind one of its meandering loops here when it changed course over the years and is now channelled through more defined and fortified embankments and dykes to defend modern Delhi from floods. On the west side of the lake on the landfill-reclaimed land stands a housing colony. On the east side is a plantation of a few acres of acacia, babool and keekar trees, offering some habitat to local remnant wildlife. Though the lake and its surrounding fields were originally an excellent wetland ecosystem which supported a rich wildlife habitat, the Delhi government of late has converted the lake and started promoting it as a water games/sports facility

BHALSWA LAKE (PRESENT) Delhi's Bhalswa lake, once famous for water sports, fighting for existence. This lake, in north-west Delhi, was originally shaped liked a horseshoe, spreading over a 59-hectare area, arguably one of the largest water bodies of Delhi. The lake shot to its peak popularity in 1992 when the Union sports ministry started water sports here. The sports activities had to be stopped because of high pollution levels. In 2015, the government officially issued an order suspending such recreational activities. Today, the size of the lake has been squeezed to just 34 hectares. A landfill site standing next to the lake has been releasing toxic gases and producing unbearable stench for anyone to venture around. Also, thousands of litres of sewage water, cow dung and other waste generated by the adjoining dairy farms has reduced the lake to a waste dumping site. The actual concern is sewerage pipelines coming from Bhalswa dairy locality. Public Works Department and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) also come forward but they do not have a plan to divert sewerage pipelines and sort out this problem of dumping of dung.

The sledge/plastic flowing in lake making it marshy and contaminated. The garbage dumping spots created around the lake is due to lack of self awareness and garbage vehicle needs to visit door to door for collection. The boundary wall of lake is broken at many spots by local resident for smooth passing of sledge into the lake. Authorities to take immediate action against encroachment around the lake.
Engage local community in regular cleaning drive to create ownership of making Bhalswa Lake Clean.
Giving economic opportunities to women in Bhalaswa Dairy will help overcoming dumping problem. 7
Bhalaswa Lake SET UP SOLID-LIQUED SEPARATOR TO SOLVE DUMPING ISSUE Solid Liquid Separator is a machine composed by a feed device (feeding hopper or a compensator tank depending on whether the material is conveyed mechanically or pumped), a separator casing including a screw conveyor and a cylindrical screen, a compacted solid material outlet module and one or two separated liquid outlets. The drive unit and the basement complete the machine. Functions: • Solids-liquid separating machine including a screw conveyor. Using both principles of separation, by gravity and by mechanical pressing, the machine is designed to separate the liquid phase from the solid phase in a wide range of substances such as sludge, sewage, manure, solids-liquid mixtures, vegetables, processing waste and others, where the percentage of liquid inside the solid may be considerably different. • The machine receives the material to be separated and conveys it using the screw conveyor inside the separator casing. • The liquid phase is separated through the mesh of the cylindrical screen which encloses the screw conveyor. • Along with its path toward the exit, the material gradually separates progressively the less linked liquid and then the more strongly linked liquid until a plug of almost dry material has formed before the outlet. The plug is continuously expelled through the outlet diaphragm. • The machine will automatically find its balance of squeezing force depending on the material. Consequently, it can be used for a wide range of materials without the need for any manual adjustments 8
