Virtual Reality Virtual reality is a computer simulation, it is interactive, immersive, visual, audio and/or haptic, made of real or imaginary environments. It allows one or more persons to partly escape from physical reality for a virtual change of time, place and (or) type of interaction in an artificial world.
IIS3 IIS3 is a parallel circuit of traditional research. Immersive Interactive Sys-
tem Cube is a human scale simulator. It allows a user to visit a virtual world by standing inside the image. This system takes the form of a cube of four screens 2m60 wide 2m high (front, right, left and ground). The user enters the cube, fitted with 3d glasses on,supplemented by a tracking video system and navigation. This equipment allows him to be interactive in the 3D environment thats surrounds him. IIS3 is a totally immersive.
- Educational level (virtual environments for training, mission preparation, strategies and sports performance evaluations...), virtual reality can teach by putting people in situation. - Medical level (surgery, therapy, ...): virtual reality allows the active participation of patients, with full cooperation of caregivers. - Political level (decision support for planning, environmental protection, risk management ...): virtual reality allows decision makers to understand the different scenarios to be considered, and to test the various possibilities acting in the virtual environment. Risk management and decision-making go throught by simulating the action. IIS3 was designed from extensive researches, from the technology of the cube of screens to the HMI (Human Machine Interface). They are based on rendering by parallel systems, stereoscopic vision , HMI, tracking video system, real-time 3D engine ... The project was improved by adding, stereoscopy and interactivity with a handcontrol.
Many concepts related to virtual reality have already been developed, but their approach remains scientific or theoretical for the public. IIS3 wants to give another vision of the obscure characters of information and technology.
IIS3Lab. LABORATORY IIS3Lab. is a mobile laboratory, which can support many events or performances.It was created to raise awareness of virtual reality technologies to the public though playful and sensory visits totally imaginary to virtual worlds.
It is inspired from a VR system called CAVE VR, immersive room or interactive theater. The immersive first achievement was created in 1992 by EVL Electroniv Visualization Laboratory, University of Illinois in Chicago. This system is limited to research, however many applications can be approached in various branches education, computer aided design, entertainment, medical & industrial research..., (artistic activities ...).
Applications : - Technological level (Simulation testing ...), each new product, from disposable shaver to nuclear power station, is virtually tested at each stage of its making, leading to prototyping or dismantling. - Cultural level (historical re-enactment, virtual museum, virtual theater, interactive fiction, participatory arts ...): virtual reality puts the viewer at the heart of the work, enabling him to become actor and creator.
The laboratory is also developing training workshops to virtual reality techniques, the stereoscopic display system and digital creation dedicated to immersive system. Today, the mastery of these tools enables to consider the implementation of a fully immersive cube closed, in which the user would have no real benchmark. the immersive room are rarely operated. IIS3 would therefore create a fixed structure, a research and development in virtual reality, with its own tools, show room, or rent facilities. This work platform would be linked to research laboratories medical, industrial, urban planning, architecture, cultural... wishing to view their project before conception.
