PROJECT3CULTURECENTER
Dundee Cultural Center.
The Project is located in Dundee, a city on the fore front of graphic design and also accounting for 10% of the United Kingdome’s digital-entertainment industry. The site is the hopeful new place for a cultural quarter with the DCA and Rep Theatre on the same street although surrounding areas have been partially fractured by the transport infrastructure cutting off other areas. The aim: To develop the cultural image of the specific area and reconnect the fractured areas. The Digital Façade is a media display for events within the building and an iconic feature to define the area. It is made up from a series of coloured LED’s within transparent tubes, the entire façade has a 60% translucency allowing for visual link’s through to the interior as well as messages, pictures and even video’s to be shown. This provides a virtual canvas for the developing graphic andt digital entertainment industry within Dundee. The central space within the program is the exhibition running through the entire length, held within the service and living elements. It develops as one moves through from outdoor performance, indoor performance, gallery / function space to the live link. This is a digital space from which other events, cultural centres and information on Dundee is collected. This creates a hub from which one can experience Dundee’s culture. Design summary: The building has been organised over a grid of 1.2m to create a more efficient use of materials and structure. the design is split in to three main sections defined by the space and by their structure; admin, exhibition and living. The admin block is created with blockwork, the double height exhibition space running through the entire length of the building is a steel frame and the living from a combination of steel and timber. The main feature of the design is the louvres running over the roof of the exhibition space, as a result of this technology project they have been rotated 90 degrees from what is showen in these renders to accommodate a more efficient structural and environmental solution.
