We don’t want war,

SITHANDIWE VELAPHI

Butterworth taxi owners will not go into war with motorists who are picking hitchhikers even though one of their members was allegedly hit and killed by a motorist at KwaKey near Bhungeni. On January 27, a silver grey Toyota Corolla had picked a hitchhiker near the robots at KwaKey when a member of the Butterworth Taxi Association (BTA), who was on “patrol”, tried to block the vehicle from going to the Dutywa direction. The vehicle could not obey the member’s instructions and it was at that stage that Seti Mxunyelwa (52) was hit by the vehicle. He died on his arrival at Butterworth Hospital, according to police spokesperson Capt Jackson Manatha. Mxunyelwa’s alleged killing has angered the taxi industry in Butterworth. The industry wants the “perpetrator” arrested to face “the wrath of the law.” On January 30, no taxi was allowed to move in the town, resulting in inconvenience and delay to people going to work in Butterworth. Although not formally informing their clients (commuters) about the move to halt their taxis, BTA members said they were in mourning. Residents from Zizamele, Mchubakazi, Msobomvu, Cuba, Bika, Ndabakazi, Coloured and Zithulele had to take a long walk to get to town. Some residents claimed they were late at their respective workplaces while others claim their bosses were angry because of their late coming. One worker in town

said he was given a notice for being late. Butterworth Taxi Forum president Sithethi Funda apologised for the inconvenience to commuters. He told Khanya Community Radio on the evening on January 30 that such thing will never happen again. “We were dismayed about the lack of action in apprehending the suspect who killed our member. We thought the protest (of not moving any of our vehicles) could ignite action from law enforcement agencies,” Funda said in an interview with Ikamva LaseGcuwa. Asked if BTA would continue patrolling on motorists picking hitchhikers, Funda said: “We will continue doing that. But we will not fight. We will do it in a polite way. We are not opposed to motorists picking hitchhikers but we are against the opening of ranks outside town.” Manatha said police have opened a case of culpable homicide. “We are busy collecting evidence regarding this incident. No arrests have been made yet,” said Manatha at the time of our going to print. Funda said the case needed to change from “mere” culpable homicide to murder. “That incident was done deliberately,” said Funda. Mnquma Local Municipality traffic officer, Khayalethu Buso, said he was also aware of the incident. He said taxi bosses are at liberty to guard “all irregularities against their business.” But that has to be done within the ambiguity of the law, Buso told Ikamva LaseGcuwa.

ANC retains majority rule in Mbhashe SITHANDIWE VELAPHI

The ANC has retained its majority rule in Mbhashe Local Municipality after winning 10 of the 12 wards on recent by-elections contested amid rigorous campaigns. The party was contesting 12 wards in the highly contested Mbhashe Local Municipality. The ANC, which only needed two wards to be the majority party in the Dutywa based municipality, lost two wards which it previously controlled. The other two wards in Mbhashe were won by UDM and an independent candidate (Luyanda Gogoba), respectively. The 12 ANC councillors, including four proportional representative councillors in Mbhashe, were fired by the provincial leadership of the ANC after they decided to sack Mbhashe mayor Nonceba Olga Mfecane in October 2012, accusing her of corruption. They did this without the party’s instructions

and the ANC has since reinstated Mfecane to her mayoral post. “By the look of things, we are set to increase our voter margins in general elections and we intend to regain our 82%. As ANC we have showed a brave showing as we take every election seriously. “Mbhashe people through their mandate are saying ANC must do more and continue uplifting the standards of living, providing services and extending comprehensive social security that covers largely the vulnerable and indigent people. The outcomes confirm our policy correctness, visible changes and approval of President (Jacob) Zuma’s led policies as relevant,” said Qoboshiyane. UDM provincial secretary Wandile Tsipa thanked the people who voted their party. “We accept the results in Mbhashe. We are happy that there are those people in the community who still value their democratic right.” Other parties which contested byelections in Mbhashe include Cope, PAC, United Congress and DA.

Police foil wouldbe robbery at Fingoland Mall SITHANDIWE VELAPHI

BUTTERWORTH police foiled a would-be robbery that was to take place at the town’s flagship Fingoland Mall during the morning on January 28. Police arrested two suspects aged 28 and 36. The suspects were cornered around the busy CBD of Butterworth. “Both men were believed to be on a mission to rob some shops of the local mall,” said police spokesperson Capt Jackson Manatha. He said two fire arms namely pistols which were stripped of their serial numbers were found from the suspects. “One fire arm had 17 rounds of ammunition while the other fire arm had six rounds of ammunition,” Manatha told Ikamva LaseGcuwa. The recovered firearms have been sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of other crimes. “Both suspects have been charged with possession of fire arms and ammunition,” Manatha said. He said the two suspects were arrested as a result of police crime intelligence driven information. The suspects’ case is still before Butterworth Magistrate’s Court. In July last year, a security guard working for Protea Coin Security Services was shot and killed at Fingoland Mall by suspects driving a silver grey 4×4 bakkie. The security guard had just come out of one of the shops when he was killed. The suspects took an undisclosed money and fled the scene.

The elderly women’s recipe for life is not a secrete, they said. They keep themselves healthy by exercising, regular check-ups, eating health and most of it all laughing. Nolwazi Vutula, 74, who is the local chairperson of Sangala, thanked Nogoduka for sponsoring their gathering. “We are glad that you did not just sacrifice your resources for our gathering but for your time,” said Vutula. “We will continue to keep ourselves on healthy condition so that we can lead with examples on our young ones,” said Vutula. Nogoduka said he is glad to have been part of an elderly gathering. “I promise that next year I will take you to the beach so that you can enjoy yourselves. We still need you on healthy condition so that you can keep guiding us,” said Nogoduka. MaMbeki said the youth of the country is no longer committed to its own development. She appealed to the elders to keep instilling discipline to their children. “The lack of discipline among the youth is causing troubles on our country. But I am not happy when I see some parents not guiding their children and instead spoiling their children who in turn cause trouble in our country,” said Mbeki who thanked the Dutywa elders for inviting her to speak on the occasion.

Sombre mood on Butterworth SAPS members as Mbiziyatsha finally retires SITHANDIWE VELAPHI

Not every police member at Butterworth Police station is jovial with the retirement of station commander Col Coert Jordaan who has served the police force for 36 years. Jordaan, who is affectionately known as Mbiziyatsha by SAPS members in Butterworth, officially retired in December 2013 as Butterworth Police station commander after being on the position since 1996. Butterworth SAPS members gathered and community gathered at Zithulele Police Sports Club hall

in Butterworth to bid farewell to him. Many of the SAPS were in melancholy mood. They said the man has been mentoring them and felt it was not the right time for him to leave. Jordaan was showered with gifts coming from Butterworth SAPS members. The flexible and accessible station commander has previously worked in East London, Kei Road, Stutterheim and Komga. Jordaan said that he enjoyed each and every minute of his stay as the station commander of Butterworth. He appealed to the young members of the SAPS to be disciplined and love their work.

In a one on one interview with Ikamva LaseGcuwa, Jordaan said one of his achievements was moving the police station from “amatyotyombes (shacks)” to a fully fledged police station. “The other achievement is the arrest of one the country’s serial killers Bulelani Mabhayi,” said Jordaan. He said he will always miss his colleagues at Butterworth. “My cellphone number is available, they can call me anytime,” he said. Butterworth SAPS Cluster Commander Brig Mzimasi Vukani has temporarily taken over as station commander until a final appointment.

Website to expose malpractices on initiation Botched: Initiates in the Pondoland area Staff Reporter

A FORMER Eastern Cape state doctor who set up a website to expose manhood of initiates who continue to die in the province has ignored pressure to close his site. Dr Dingeman Rijken, a Dutch doctor who worked at the department of health’s Holy Cross Hospital in Flagstaff, was recently called upon by the Film and Publication Board (FPB) to explain reasons behind forming up the site. This comes after the board claims that a lot of complaints from individuals and organisations were recorded after Rijken’s website (www.ulwaluko) got to the attention of the media. The website shows graphic images of initiates’ manhood with gangrene, skin loss, incomplete and infectious. FPB has since classified that the site should be restricted to children under the age of 13. Though the website has been restricted to young children, FPB has said it has an “educative” role. A total of 43 initiates died in the Eastern Cape during this summer’s circumcision season while 39 died in June last year. Rijken, who has treated a lot of initiates in the previous years, said he will only close the website once

the deaths of initiates had stopped. He blames traditional leaders in the Eastern Cape as main culprits behind the deaths, a claim that has angered many the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders (ECHTL). “The website will close down once they have eliminated deaths and mutilations, or when they have undertaken serious steps towards achieving this. These traditional leaders should be embarrassed by the deaths and mutilations itself, instead of wishing for it to remain secret,” Rijken said. Risika said: “After due consideration of the complaint (against the website) and after having given the respondent (Rijken) an opportunity to respond in his defence and him having failed to do so, the board came to conclusion that images contained in the website, in its unrestricted form, can be disturbing and harmful to children below the age of 13 and classified the website and its contents 13N (not to children under 13).” ECHTL chairperson Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima reiterated that Rijken had undermined traditional leaders, the people of the Eastern Cape and their customs. He said plans and campaigns were in place to help fight the deaths of initiates in the province.

Commentary

Amathole’s improvement of controls Nine of Cosatu’s 19 affiliates based in the Eastern Cape finally broke their silence when they released a media statement affirming their call for a Special Congress at their federation. In the statement below, the affiliates cautioned the SACP and ANC of mingling into their affairs.

It is indeed with great excitement that we are all here today on this very important occasion. The timing of this announcement by the Auditor General is even more strategic to me as it sets the tone for us on what is going to be a very busy and demanding year ahead. However, in Municipal terms – a financial year is measured as from the first of July until the thirtieth of June. This is why today we are able to react on what the Auditor General has reflected on our books for the year ended 30 June 2013. This audit comprises of the consolidated and separate statement of financial position •as at 30 June 2013, the consolidated and separate statement of financial performance, statement of changes in net assets, budget statement and the cash flow statement for the year. During my first year of assuming office as the Executive Mayor of Amathole District, the then Auditor General Mr Terence Nombembe visited us and held lengthy discussions around how we were conducting our finances. The Speaker of our Council, the Executive Mayor and the Chairperson of MPAC had to make commitments towards ensuring that the ADM was practicing good, clean governance. Our commitments - which were aimed at avoiding regress -included amongst many that Council appointed Audit Committee that was functional. We also had to ensure that council advocates the implementation of oversight role by ensuring that the role of oversight is being conducted as required by the Legislation. Our other commitments included the enhancement of the accountability process by ensuring objective political oversight to scrutinize and oversee executive action. This was to be carried out by creating an enabling environment for the political wing to conduct searching and rigorous assessment of financial administration and performance. The ADM has already received an un-

qualified audit results for two consecutive years in 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. Over the years, this institution has also been a recipient of numerous Vuna awards for improved audit outcomes. As you can see, today is an important milestone that began years ago, as just an ideology, and it is such a remarkable experience to realize that we are now on the verge of having a clean audit in our life term. As the Amathole District, perhaps it is our mission statement that best describes what we are all about. It captures our developmental mandate which is dedicated to contributing towards: Ensuring access to socio-economic opportunities, Building the capacity of local municipalities within ADM’s area of jurisdiction, Ascribe to a culture of accountability and clean governance, Sound financial management, Political and administrative interface to enhance good service delivery and Contributing to the betterment of our communities through a participatory development process We have reached two decades since the dawn of our democracy.Collectively as a nation, we have indeed made South Africa a better place. As the entire South African government reflects in the 20 years, a lot has been achieved and indeed we have a good story to tell. As government we have built millions of homes, and in Amathole particularly, we have built thousands of toilets and have enabled hundreds of thousands more people to have access to clean quality good water. We have created jobs, provided free basic water to the poor and created new opportunities. Equally; the contrasting legacies left by the tyranny of apartheid and the inactiveness of our people in the mainstream economy of our country continue to haunt us.Whilst we continue to redress the skewed distribution of wealth through our supply chain management policies and incubator capacitating programs, government needs assistance from all stakeholders in order to alleviate poverty and create jobs. And thus I would like to call upon the business community to forge links with us and assist in our endeavors whenever we make a call. With the Amathole District Municipality having been named by the State President as one of the 23 most poorest Municipalities in the country; and not only poor but rurally twinned

with a high rate of unemployment, it has become clear to us that the type of a government practice that will succeed in such an environment is a responsible, clean and principled government. This is why as the ADM, we have set ourselves and are abiding by the standards of high values. That we have maintained an unqualified audit opinion for two consecutive years is by virtue of these values. We base what we do on the Batho Pele principles of transparency, courtesy, openness, consultation and value for money. This comes from our belief in the ideologies of clean governance with sound financial management controls. Currently, our Administration is spearheading a transformation agenda that is creating a government institution that is caring to its employees and its customers. The principles of oversight and anti-corruption are also at our core. You cannot talk clean governance whilst tolerating corruption at the same time. It is with this in mind, that the political and administration leadership of the ADM has maintained an open door relationship with the Auditor-General so that he constantly has a say in the manner in which we handle our books. However, as much as we are delighted as the ADM with this audit outcome, we are very much aware that we cannot navigate this process alone and leave our local Municipalities with undesired outcomes. It becomes critical that as much as Amathole District Municipality improves, so too should its seven local Municipalities. This is why through our Municipal Support Unit we are assisting our Municipalities areas of Financial Management, Supply Chain Management, External Audit Process, Capacity Building Training , Budgets and Financial Policies. As the ADM we appreciate the support that we have been receiving from the AG’s office. As witnessed, we again commit to ensure that we do not regress and instead improve on this audit outcome. I would like to thank the ADM Council, its councillors and committees for the valued support that they have given to the executive. Without this support, oversight and cooperation, we would not be in the position that we are in today. I want to thank the Chairperson of the

Audit Committee and its members for the insights and support.Allow me to also thank the Members of the Mayoral Committee for the oversight role that they play in our daily activities as a District municipality. A special word of appreciation must be given to our Accounting Officer, the Municipal Manager Mr Chris Magwangqana, our Chief Financial Officer Mr Nkosinathi Soga, our executive management and staff for the tireless hours and tremendous efforts towards this outcome. Last but not least; I would also like to thank the community of Amathole in its entirety; from the ruling party, opposition, traditional leaders and ordinary men and women on the streets for their invaluable support. I have no doubt that the sky is indeed our limit and working together, we will develop into a government that is reliable, trustworthy, accountable and most importantly, delivers quality services. I thank you. Enkosi. Khonza is ADM executive mayor

Can’t put my finger on it

As we start yet another year 20 for me (2014) in street “lingo” language, Ikamva lase Gcuwa welcomes you to another exciting edition. It is open season to politicians in the next few months because this is voting year with both provincial and national elections taking place on the 7 May. The final registration has been on the 8-9 this month and estimated 23 million eligible registered voters up for grabs. We have already seen the ruling party visit this area to launch its provincial manifesto before the Mbashe bi-elections where more than 12 councilor candidacies was vacant. Scores came as far Port Elizabeth to give support, campaign to garner votes. Some small, new parties also came out to register to be part of this historical moment in history being the 5th general elections after the death of the first president of a democratic state. Secondly it will be the first times that so called “Born Frees” take to the ballot. The real questions is, are we really better of as a country and a people since 94? One can get as many different answers from as many people on this one. My view is that, yes we have made great strides in different areas but a lot still needs to be done or could have been done. The fact that we are able to go to a vote should not be taken lightly because people died just to be able to vote meaning it’s up to all of us to continue the fight and build this democracy. Like any other young state some social ills which South Africans were not exposed to prior 1994 have manifested themselves. We hope you enjoy this edition, lastly you can visit our facebook page like it be part of debates, comment, send us pictures and keep the debate going. What not to do when caring for a small baby

I

n this article I will be talking about believes and practices that are wide-spread in our community, but unfortunately cause damage to the babies and may even lead to babies’ death. I am hoping that after reading this article at least some of you will avoid using such advises on your children and warn your friends and neighbors against using these dangerous practices. We all know that small babies require lot’s of care. They cannot talk and cannot tell us what is bothering them. Although there are believes that something is wrong, unless the baby has a fever, vomiting, loose stool and is difficult to awake from sleep, the chances are there is not anything wrong with the baby. Babies are supposed to cry from time to time, they may be uncomfortable when passing stool and gas (farting), they bring up milk, they get rashes that usually disappear within a few days and all this is absolutely normal and does not require any treatment. However, if you are worried, you should attend local clinic and check with a nurse or a doctor your concerns. Unfortunately instead of seeking an advise from a medical practitioner, many people follow an advise from unqualified people. Such practices end up badly with children being brought to the hospital too late, when nothing can be done and they just die. We do see such cases in the hospital too frequently and such unnecessary outcomes hurt us all. So what practices and believes I am talking about? Taking care of umbilical stump (inkaba) NOT TRUE: It is believed that if you use mud, ash, Vaseline, aspirin and surgical spirit it breaks of quickly. Breaking off of the umbilical stuff is important as before it happens a woman should be house. TRUE: You don’t need to use anything on umbilical

stump. If you like, you can clean every day with a dry cotton ear bud. You may use ethanol that can be bought from the pharmacy to clean it as well, but it is not absolutely necessary. It takes different time for a stump to fall off, usually 1-2 weeks. The mother or the baby does NOT need to stay in the house until the stump falls off. There is not reason for that. In contrast, it is good for the mother and the baby to spend some time in fresh air outside. It is also important for the mother to move around to prevent complications after having a baby (such as clots in the legs). Fine hair on the face NOT TRUE: It is believed that if you use umthombothi on baby’s face it can destroy the facial hair and make the baby’s face smooth. TRUE: Different babies have different amount of hair on the babies. Any amount of hair on baby’s body is normal and does not indicate anything. It is just normal. This hair will fall off within first few months of baby’s life. There is NO need to use anything

on baby’s hair. Yellow (jaundice) NOT TRUE: Believed that this is caused by the fact that the new mom was eating oranges and peaches (yellow fruit). Traditional mix for jaundice: glucose water, garlic bangle necklace, filter coffee. TRUE: “Jaundice” is the word doctor’s use when a baby’s skin or white part of the eye turns yellow. Jaundice is common in newborn babies and can

happen within days of a baby’s birth. Babies are usually checked for jaundice for a few days after they are born. Jaundice happens when a baby has high levels of a substance called “bilirubin” in the blood. Jaundice is a sign that a doctor needs to do a blood test to check the baby’s bilirubin level. Babies can have high bilirubin levels for different reasons. For example, some babies who breastfeed can get

jaundice because they do not get as much breast milk as they need. It is important that a baby gets checked for jaundice to see if he or she needs treatment, because very high bilirubin levels can lead to brain damage. Ifokotho (IFOKOTHO) - bulging fontanel or SUNKEN fontanel NOT TRUE: believed to be due to bad spirits. TRUE: All newborn babies have a soft on the top of their heads

called fontanel. Fontanels are located between the bones of the head and they disappear once the bones come closer together in the first year and disappear then. However, bulging or sunken fontanel is dangerous. It is a sign of increased pressure inside of babies head (bulging fontanel) or severe dehydration (sunken fontanel) and a baby should urgently be checked by a doctor.

Butterworth pool balloons to millions Sivuyile Mbatha

At cost of more than R 8 million the construction upgrade of Butterworth pool has come to a standstill with no work on site since August 2012. The project is funded by Eastern Cape Department of Recreation, Sports, Arts and Culture on request by Mnquma local municipality in 2010. The project comprised the construction of 23 by 25 metre main pool, toddlers and children’s pool, a pavilion, change rooms and entertainment space. FEBRUARY 2014

Biography of Zephania Lekoane Mothopeng Zephania ‘Zeph’ Lekoane Mothopeng was born on 10 September 1913, in the Orange Free State (now Free State) near the town of Vrede. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to the Transvaal where his father had bought land. It was here that he completed his primary schooling at the St. Mary’s Anglican School, Daggakraal, in the district of Amersfoort and then went to St Chatswold Training College. In 1933, he moved to Johannesburg and continued his studies until matriculation in 1937. After working for a short while in Johannesburg, he enrolled at Adams College, Amanzimtoti in Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) where he was one of the first students to obtain a post Matriculation Teachers Certificate. Mothopeng started teaching at Orlando Secondary School in 1941. During his time as a teacher, he held various positions in teachers associations including the Presidency of the Transvaal African Teachers Association (TATA) in 1950. In 1946, he obtained his BA degree from the University of South Africa (Unisa). Mothopeng taught Maths and Physical Science at Orlando High School for about thirteen years. He conducted the senior school choir and in 1947, the Orlando School choir was chosen to sing to King George VI. Mothopeng conducted the choir at Orlando Communal Hall when the King and his royal entourage visited Orlando during their tour of South Africa. Mothopeng was one of the founders and first chairperson of the Johannesburg Bantu Musical Festival in 1946, which received sponsorship from the Johannesburg City Council. Mothopeng became the Vice Principal but lost his job for opposing the introduction of Bantu Education. After losing his job, he moved to Maseru, Lesotho where he continued teaching until returning to Transvaal in 1955. By this time, Mothopeng was no longer working

as a teacher. He was articled to a firm of attorneys in Johannesburg. Mothopeng’s political life began as early as 1943 when he was a member of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL). He later aligned himself with the organisation’s Africanist section, which was critical of its policies of engagement with White ‘liberals’. They formed their own magazine called The Africanist to voice their opinion within the African National Congress (ANC). In 1959, the Africanists broke away from the ANC and formed the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). Mothopeng acted as chairman at the inaugural conference of the PAC on 6 April 1959 at Orlando Communal Hall. Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was elected the President of the organization. Q & A with Thandi Sixesha

Noluthando Sixesha, a talkative, kind, loving bubbly 25 year old presenter from Khanya Community Radio, the host of Ezasekhaya and Emithandazweni. The public management graduate from Engcobo, grew up at her mother’s home in Nqgamakhwe the only girl at home, joined station in 2011 and her show was voted as the best programme of the year and she was voted the best improved presenter for 2013.

My dream is?

Your typical work day?

How do you relax?

It is very exciting every day, if anything has disturbed on the way to work once I reach the studio all problems disappear. In short work is work but I take it as medication.

I like working with people in my community for instance work with young people teaching them about challenges of our background to succeed at varsity.

First day at KCR?

Radio and uMama kaMa Asi kuMhlobo is my motivation because followed her calling to radio from teaching; same to me I believe radio is my calling even though I don’t have any journalism background. I don’t see myself in an office but in the future like to be with mainstream and if Maka ma Asi retires…..

Nickname when growing up. Thandos, Stash or Nonqunqu.

Yah…it was not easy, I don’t wanna lie because I could not use the presenter desk, remember I did not do any media or journalism course. Because I grew in Christian family, I was not used to R&, Pop Kwaito so it was very difficult to play music. In one instance I would play 4 Zahara songs in a row because words were just not coming out of my mouth Yhoo bhuti “ndinqatyelwe yinto yothetha”). Colleagues would come to me saying why you are doing.

Hate most about people.

1 thing can’t leave without?

1 thing most people don’t know about me.

You see, my show today is what makes me wake up every day. Like if on weekends I miss radio a lot when Monday comes it like I have away for a longtime so radio has become my lifestyle.

Gossip, changing faces. 2 things I love about the show. I love to speak and my listeners. Favourite colours. White, black, purple and brown. Family background, I can tell a story. What I would change in life. Youth unemployment and use of sex for jobs.

Career Corner Lusanda Mangxamba. email:lusanda.mangxamba@gmail.com

How to become an estate agent This month we will focus on the property industry. An estate agent is someone who sells property for a living and earns an income from it. These can be any form of property, from farms, private residences, apartments, units in a security estate to commercial properties. This career can be a very satisfying and rewarding if you work hard at it. People are always looking for houses to buy and always require someone to help them find their ideal property. This means you will need to excel at what you do so that they can refer you to their friends/family/associates etc. Estate agents can earn anything from 3-7% commission on a property they sell. This means that if you sell a property for R1m, you can earn anything between R30 000 – R70 000 depending on your negotiation with the property owner. The downside to this industry is that it is commission based – if you don’t sell a property, you don’t earn. This therefore means that you will have to do a lot of financial planning. When you do sell your first house, you will have to make sure the commission you earn will spread over the time that you haven’t sold anything. There is an entity in South Africa that regulates this industry;it’s called the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB). This EAAB determines, amongst other things, what qualifications a person needs to become an estate agent. The basic requirements: As a new entrant to the industry, there are basically three obligations that you have to fulfil in to become an estate agent: i) Course - the qualification FETC: Real Estate (NQF level 4), ii) Training - to complete a 12-month internship under the mentorship of an experienced estate agent and iii) Board exam - to write and pass a professional designate exam (PDE) at the end of the internship. This aligns the professional education and training

requirements of the real estate profession with those of the legal and accounting professions.

Good organisational skills

If the aspirant estate agent holds a degree or national diploma in specific fields he/she could possibly be exempt from having to achieve the FETC: Real Estate.

Schools across the country offering estate agents courses and what costs can one expect to pay

The ability to learn and put the learning into practice

It is important for the aspirant estate agent to check the credentials of the training provider before committing to the process and paying any fees.

Contact nicole@sarea.co.za if you hold a tertiary qualification to check its exemption status. However, the other two requirements, namely training and board exam will still need to be completed in order to qualify.

Companies must be accredited to offer the FETC: Real Estate by Services Seta and the EAAB, as well as being registered as a private FET college by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Qualities/characteristics of a successful estate agent

Course fees range from R7 000 to R15 000 depending on delivery model.

Good communication skills, Honesty,

I wish you success in your chosen career. Lusanda. mangxamba@gmail.com

Mbhashe by-elections

The ANC, DA, UDM, Cope and United Congress recently battled it out on by-elections in Mbhashe. The by-elections came after the ANC last year expelled 12 of its councillors in the Dutywa based council after misconduct as explained on our front page. The ANC won 10 of the 12 wards in Mbhashe. The ANC also won its ward in Elundini in Mt Fletcher. The ANC lost a ward to DA in Buffalo City. ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane and DA provincial leader Athol Trollip commented on the outcomes of the by-elections. Mabuyane: The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape welcomes the results of the byelections held on 29 January 2014. In the province 14 wards in total were contested and the ANC won 11 of these. The African National Congress in the Eastern Cape thanks everyone who took time out to vote and sends its gratitude as well to the multitude of volunteers and supporters of the ANC who worked tirelessly in the run up to the by-elections. We are humbled and inspired by the reaffirmation of our people’s support and >> from page 13

trust in the ANC; as such the ANC calls upon all our deployees to live up to the confidence that has been shown in us. The outcomes of the recent January 8th celebration in Mbhashe is the evidence of the confidence our people have in the ANC and the belief that ANC is the only party that can be trusted with delivering on the mandate given by the people. The ANC further calls upon all eligible voters, in the province to take part in the upcoming voter registration weekend on the 8th to 9th February. It is our collective responsibility to ensure all those who are eligible to vote register. Working together, we must consolidate the gains of 20 years of democracy and play an active part in moving South Africa forward. Mabuyane is ANC provincial secretary

Trollip: The Democratic Alliance achieved considerable growth in the by-elections held in Mbhashe. We showed significant growth particularly in ward 5 where we polled 530 votes. The DA contested 5 wards in Mbhashe after 12 ANC councillors were expelled for “misconduct”. Voters here have expressed their outrage with corrupt government officials, poor political leadership and slow service delivery; they want a government that is focused on creating jobs for the unemployed and developing a credible framework for improving service delivery.

The party’s growth in the Eastern Cape was also reinforced by the results of the Buffalo City Municipality by-election in ward 3 which took place yesterday. The DA increased its share of the vote from 52% in 2011 to an 82% majority this year. This is a clear indication of the growing confidence of voters in the DA being a realistic alternative to the ANC. The DA is South Africa’s most diverse party and one which is determined to continue the fight against corruption and bad governance. We are committed to growing the economy, creating jobs and delivering quality services. The DA expects to expand its support in every region of the Eastern Cape and we look forward to attaining impressive results in the upcoming elections. SA football set for another overhaul On the Streets with Sivuyile Mbatha:

VOX POP

In past week we watched with shock as Bafana Bafana was booted out of yet another competition in the first round. Minister of sports Fikile Mbalula called them “a bunch of useless individuals”. There have been calls for a total overhaul of the team, some calling for a name change. We took to the streets of Butterworth on the matter.

Mkhululi Mlandu.

The booting out of Bafana Bafana in the recent Orange Chan tournament in the first round left many questions about the standard of soccer, coaching and development of talent. Bafana Bafana last won a widely reputable tournament in the 1996 African Confederations Cup (AFCON) under coach Clive barker when it hosted the tournament for the first time. Having players like Lucas Radebe, Philemon Masinga, Neil Tovey, Linda Buthelezi just to mention a few regarded the best squad ever assembled by the country since their re-admittance back to FIFA (Federation of International Football Association) in 1992. Since then the team has been consistent at times in a downward spiral even though managed to qualify for the 1998 World Cup held in France under Philippe “White Witch Doctor” Trousier, the team came second in AFCON championship in Burkina Faso under Jomo Sono. After Sono, Trott Moloto took over taking the team to third place in 2000 and the team was booted out in the first round AFCON in 2002 but amazingly qualified for Japan – Korea world cup in 2002.

I don’t think we should change the name Bafana Bafana, the only thing I am concerned about is the team using the same players, without giving new players a chance to show what they can do for the team. Many players in Bafana are just there because of their histoAt all these intervals the team was ry or only play in their teams moving from coach to the next, local to and are out at Bafana. international names, new plans, styles, training methods , huge salaries, bonuses. The appointment of world renowned R 1 million a month Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira in 2008 set a precedence in terms of investing in quality. Although taking over from yet another internationally respected coach Portuguese Carlos Queroz who is touted for yet another stint after incumbent Gordon Igesund. Other coaches that have managed the team over the years are Ted Dimitru, Pitso Mosimane, and Shakes Mashaba with all having varying successes. The fact that the team did not qualify for the 2010 world cup but was elevated due to being a host, failing to make the grade in the 2010, 2013 AFCON qualifying for the Chan tournament due being host raised a lot of excitement non the matter. Minister of Sports Fikile Mbalula met SAFA president Danny Jordan after that shocking defeat by Nigeria it is clear indication that something is still not right and a lot still needs to be done in improving our national soccer teams.

Patrick Msengana. Not at all Sir I don’t think so. Losing games has absolutely nothing to do with the name, other than unstable SA football politics and poor administration, to support my statement the team of 1996 used the same name and the boys never disappointed.

Sabelo Ntengento. I think we should do away with the squad, it’s been quite some time SAFA wasting money rebuilding and rebuilding with nothing right coming out of it. Even if we can start from scratch again our players are simply not willing to change.
