HELLO. Growing up in The Netherlands I have always had a strong
affiliation with design and architecture. After my arrival in Australia I progressed in a career in furniture sales to the A&D industry for six
years, however, rather than selling furniture I desired to be in the shoes of the designers that I was selling to. It was a creative hunger
that I had never followed up on. Making the decision to change
the direction of my career has been the best decision I could make. Design is a personal view on life and aesthetics. It is a feeling that needs to be translated into form and shape, texture and
materiality. My designs focus on a simplicity that allows the form to own the space. Real design does not follow trends, but follows the designer's heart and the voice of the host building.

PROJECT 01 . THE CARRINGTON HOTEL - HOSPITALITY Built in 1882, The Carrington Hotel in The Blue Mountains is the most recently completed project. Redesigning four public spaces and a guest room and bathroom, the historical building envelope required a strong consideration during the design development. This resulted in a contemporary take on a traditional decorative scheme, accompanied by clever commercial viability.
PROJECT 02 . TINY HOUSE - RESIDENTIAL The Tiny House residential project focuses on one of the narrowest houses in Enmore. With a client that enjoyed the art of Joan Miro, textile design and sustainability, this project was in need of clever spatial planning and materiality specification, promoting a healthy and sustainable environment. The main
entrance of this existing dwelling was located on the first floor, providing excellent opportunities to steer away from traditional lay-outs.

PROJECT 03 . FENWICK HOUSE - RESIDENTIAL The Fenwick House is a water front building in Balmain, currently occupied by a restaurant. Owning
prominent views, this heritage building offers traditional characteristics together with an impressive pitched roof. The client's occupation as a DJ means that he spends most of his days sleeping and most of his nights working, which was a significant factor during the design process.
PROJECT 05 . 82-84 GEORGE STREET [DESIGN NATION] - COMMERCIAL The latest project involved a Redfern located commercial site for which a new lobby design was requested
by the retail client Design Nation. The lobby should host a reception desk, waiting area and accommodate a café. As the site is heritage listed, a consideration for the original building envelope was crucial during the development of the design.

The Carrington Hotel is a hotel with a rich history,
located in Sydney's The Blue Mountains. Built in 1882, the hotel has seen many renovations and
restorations to enhance the characteristics. The brief for this project was to provide a new interior design concept for four public spaces and a guest
room. Respectively these are the reception, the Grand Dining Room (made up of two spaces) and
Champagne Charlie's Cocktail bar for the public spaces, plus the Premier Guest Room with Balcony, including bathroom.

deconstruction. Deconstructing aboriginal culture to primal elements & principles of design
CONCEPT.
During the research phase of The Carrington Hotel, the intriguing
shape of crinolines and how its simple framework provided the strength, solidity and shape to a woman’s dress in the 19th century,
became an important part of the concept development. The method
of deconstruction became apparent in various forms. For example the stained glass dome frame work in the cocktail bar, but also the base structure for the traditional aboriginal dome-shaped straw huts.
When exploring this concept from a conceptual approach one finds
that the hotel and its heritage can also be deconstructed. A dominent “foreign” building on the grounds of an indigenous culture; a culture that deserves honoration.
The concept of Deconstruction explores the skeletal, deconstructed form of the indigenous culture. Particularly basic linework is a fundamental element of art and expression.

This residential project takes on one of Enmore's (and Sydney's) smallest and narrowest terrace
houses. Next to the measurements, the project is accompanied by a second interesting aspect as
the front entry of the dwelling is located on the
upper level, challenging the traditional lay out of "downstairs living" and "upstairs sleeping". The
client's brief was to create a haven where their love for textiles and Joan Miro's art reflected in the interiors whilst maintaining the quirky characteristics of the house.

interconnection. Connecting people to people and people to nature
CONCEPT. The tiny house The inception of this project, posed a number of challenges and possibilities. Three overarching themes emerged from the initial consultation with the clients; Sustainability, Joan Miro and Creative Inspiration. Sustainability The journey started with exploring the key elements of building and living sustainably. It was important that the end product not only focuses on the use of sustainable materials, but also the lifespan of the building, proper waste management during the building process and the incorporation of natural energy sources, all to result in a green living. After further research on sustainability, biophilic design was conceptualized. This could reinforce the connection between the dweller and the external natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and spatial elements. Joan miro Both working in creative professions, the clients want their home to be an extension of their creative thought processes. In observing the art of Joan Miro, there is a pattern of landscapes comprised of larger and smaller shapes. Without losing an overall rhythm and balance, Miro finds a way to highlight different stories in each part of his works. A simple colour repetition of typically primary colours combined with the neutral black and white is a constant theme.
Shadow patterns In combining the art of Miro with Lucy’s love of textiles, it became apparent that patterns were essential in the interiors of the house. Patterns can stimulate thought processes. One of the most dynamic patterns can be found in shadows. Constantly changing shadows can creatively trigger its observer. Similar to observing shapes in clouds as a child, this concept of changing shadow patterns became crucial in the approach of the final concept. In particular as these shadow patterns could be generated by natural light sources. Natural sources promote sustainability, but also bring the dweller closer to nature and the outside world that is both separated, yet integrated in the space. A version of biophilic design. Perforation (Natural) light became an important element in the Tiny House concept development and after further exploration this evolved into the concept of perforated barriers throughout a space. A smart way to maintain connection between the dweller in a larger space while still providing defined boundaries. By extending this concept to the outer layers of a space, a much larger connection to its natural surrounding can be created. This will allow the dwellers to draw creative inspiration from Tiny House’s external natural and urban environment. Interconnection Studies have shown the benefits of biophilism in increasing wellbeing and as such it became a necessary addition to the overall concept. By incorporating this element, the final concept of interconnection was born: a way of connecting people to people & people to nature.

The upper floor of the tiny house promotes interconnection through multiple voids and perforated wall elements. The plants enhance the connection to nature, whilst the pink wall connects upstairs to downstairs. The rear facade comprises of vertical timber beams, allowing for changing shadow patterns throughout the day, whilst the perforated screen at the end of the lounge room creates extra layering and dimensions.

GROUND FLOOR. bedroom
The lower floor (ground floor) of the tiny house offers the office, which has direct access to the street level. The office offers an open connection with the vanity area of the bathroom through a smoked glass wall panel. The private space of the bathroom is closed off through a striped sliding door. The bedroom at the back of the residence enjoys an outlook on an indoor and outdoor garden. For privacy, the bedroom can be closed-off from the walkthrough via a second striped sliding door.

This very first residential project is an old sand stone building with magnificent views on the Balmain
bay area. The impressive height and sand stone
bricks were strong design features. In mind was the extravagant client who works as a DJ and thus the use of natural sun light was to be considered. The
brief asked for a unique home that could entertain and impress.

CONCEPT. The Fenwick project is based around the concept of paradox. Suitable
for a client who works as a DJ and enjoys the quirky side of design.
The project's new design comprises of contradictions; unique yet cohesive.
The conceptual interplay between contradictions is explored throughout the interior spaces. From the light, soft and relaxed curves of the public spaces of the ground floor to the harsher and dark first floor which serves as the client's bedroom and working space.
The contrasting textures, lighting and lines create an overall space that is creatively stimulating, social and a sanctuary for the client.

The ground floor of the newly designed Fenwick house is open to promote interaction between different spaces and allows for an airy feel. The light and soft textures and colours are combined with a quirky ceiling that creates zoning and a form of sound absorption. With the client being a DJ, it strongly suggests a resemblence to the inside of speakers.

bedroom & office
The first floor contrasts strongly with the ground floor. Bringing dark and moody tones, combined with harsh lines within the waffle ceiling and the metal mesh northern wall, which also works as a clever light filtering system. The light pendants at the front of the building accentuates the height and draws the eye to the exposed pitched roof that is a prominent feature of the building.

Project 04 is a mixed use building, hosting a furniture showroom (Design Nation), as well as
an independantly operated café and commercial offices on the first floor. The brief required designing a new lobby area -including a break out space and
café- for the client Design Nation. Located in an
old metal factory with a rich heritage in Redfern, the design scheme proposed several exciting opportunities.

Due to its heritage restrictions, the George Street site formed an exciting challenge to incorporate both the client's needs as well as honouring the heritage of the host building. The brief from furniture supplier and client Design Nation was to design a new lobby area that could host a break-out space, a smooth entry towards the office tennants upstairs and could accommodate a café for internal and external guests. I have chosen to insert new constructions without interrupting the existing building envelope or natural characteristics, as this is an integral part of the building's history and provides an enhancement to the character of the building. Oversized elements combined with contrasting "glam vs. gritty" materials entice passer-by's to explore the building, whilst keeping in touch with the trendy grunginess that the suburb of Redfern has to offer.
