INTERVIEW TO CLUB VOLTAIRE Band - Como/Italy www.clubvoltaire.net www.facebook.com/clubvoltaire www.myspace.com/clubvoltaireband
CLUB VOLTAIRE INTERVIEW BY MARILENA ANTONINI & SARA SPINETTO PHOTOGRAPHY MATTEO ENGOLLI
Let’s start! Try to introduce Club Voltaire in a few lines. Nick: To get a sense of what Club Voltaire is and who Voltaires are, take a look at our pics and listen to our sound: our melodies speak for themselves. You can either like or dislike our music… what we are the most interested in is that people talk about Club Voltaire, express their own point of view…as long as constructive, critics are always more than welcome! When did this project start? How did you know each other? Lore (guitars & vocals): Club Voltaire project starts two years ago in Como and originates from a common, unconditional love for great British rock bands such as The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks. In January 2009, me and Mat (drums & vocals) decided to put our different personalities and musical backgrounds together and embark on a new musical project aimed at melting together the evergreen British 60’s sounds and the more recent Brit influences from the 90’s (i.e. Blur and
Radiohead, above all). Tony (lead guitars & vocals) and Nick (bass & vocals) joined two months later. One week after, Club Voltaire was already at work, busy writing their first hit: Fluorescent Stream. Your music does indeed seem to be a sort of British rock of the Sixties mixed together with some sounds of the Nineties. Was this one the result you wanted to achieve? Nick: Well… in a way, yes. But I would probably say that our music can rather be considered as an experimental, eclectic project made of mixed influences, the main surely being the British 60’s and 90’s Rock sounds but not only… We are also influenced by various contemporary sounds and ideas and we create our own world of melodies, riffs, fuzz guitars, acoustic harmonies. Very personal, I guess.
and widely inspirational Cabaret Voltaire, the Zürich Dadaist nightclub founded by Hugo Ball in 1916 as a cabaret and centre for artistic entertainment, where artists and writers used to gather, share their arts, giving musical or literary performances, in a spirit of negotiation and mockery. We decided to name ourselves after the Cabaret Voltaire in name of its lively spirit of aggregation and cultural open-mindedness. Which are the names that inspired or influenced you the most?
How did the name Club Voltaire come out? A kind of “obsession” on the French philosopher?
Matt: There are many bands that influence and inspire us out there and it is really hard naming only a few … generally speaking, I would say the whole British beat scene of the 60’s and the britpop scene of the late 90’s. But, to be honest with you, we try to keep our minds as clear and free as possible to avoid the mistake of copying something that has already been done (better) by others.
Lore: The name Club Voltaire comes from the well-known
Your first EP - About The Surface - is going to be released on
February. Can you give us some clues on it as a “preview”? Tony: Seven tracks of pure rock’n’roll, scratchy guitars, interesting vocals mixes, reminiscences of 60’s with a dash of 90’s. A work that really expresses the passion, the energy and the commitment of the band... You should check it out! “Live from the inside” trailer is really cute! Which one of you had the idea of a teaser-video? Matt: “Live from the inside” is a live anticipation of our EP and will be released more or less simultaneously; it is a sort of introduction to our audience, a showcase gig “accessible to everyone” and very intimate. We strongly believe in the EP media potential and while thinking of an effective way of intriguing people and creating an hype, we came up with this idea of a teaser video.
Apart from the brand new EP, what are you working on at the moment? Any special project you particularly care about? Nick: Given the EP coming out in less than two weeks time, our little live documentary “Live From The Inside”, our upcoming Italian tour, etc… we are a bit busy for starting to work on new projects now but we definitely want to seize the great potential of the EP in order to make Club Voltaire bigger - abroad too! Future goals? Tony: It goes without saying that our main focus now lies in promoting the EP and collecting a good number of live shows. In the meantime, as Nick just said, we want explore new musical horizons and we have new pieces in the pipeline … You can choose any band to tour with. Which one would you pick
and why? Lore: Probably Paul Weller... he’s a great songwriter and a wonderful singer. Your secret wish? Matt: Isn’t a secret supposed to remain a secret? ;-) Lore: I want the Beatles back. Tony: Writing a great song such as “Across the Universe” or “Yesterday”. Nick: I actually have many … but, as someone said, a dream to become true can not be disclosed! Suggest our readers 3 CDs that everyone should listen to. Matt: The Beatles - Revolver; Radiohead - Ok Computer; Damien Rice – O Lore: The Beatles - Revolver; The Who - Live at Leeds; Pearl Jam No Code Tony: The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s

Matt: There is no “best audience”. Also, at every gig we witness an unexpected demonstration of affection by an increasing number of unknown fans…It’s a great feeling!!! Close your eyes and try to imagine ... One of your song has been chosen as part of the soundtrack of
a movie. In your dreams, which film would it be? Matt: WOW exciting! It depends on the song ... certainly not a drama. Perhaps a smart comedy, something based on a caustic and biting humor. Lore: A film based on the Lehman Brother’s financial breakdown :-) Tony: A Tarantino’s movie, foolish and brilliant... Nick: No doubt…a song for a 007 James Bond film. The city where to live? Matt: In Europe, I would say London... otherwise, maybe a remote village in Northeastern United States or even Tokyo. Lore: London Tony: London and Barcelona Nick: Paris, mon amour Your favorite magazine? IKI Magazine ;-) Your favorite quote? Matt: “Life’s too short to make others’ shorter” Lore: “Music is everybody’s possession: it’s only publishers who think that people own it” (J. Lennon) Tony: “In this world there are only two tragedies: one is not getting what you want, the other one is getting it” (O. Wilde) Nick: “ dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” J. Lennon)
